NEW DELHI: Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan died last week after one of his mobile phones exploded while charging. He was 45 and is survived by his wife and three children.
According to reports, two of his smartphones were kept on charge next to his bedside and one of them exploded. While some reports claim that the fire from the explosion caught the mattress and then spread to the room, leading to the CEO's death, others say that broken parts of the phone hit Mr Hassan on the back of the head which led to a "trauma". The police, however, have concluded that Mr Hassan died of smoke inhalation after being trapped in a bedroom fire.
Mr Hassan's brother-in-law said that he died before the mattress caught fire.

COMMENTS"He had two phones, one Blackberry and a Huawei. We don't know which one exploded. Who would have thought such an innocuous routine procedure is the reason three young kids will grow up without their father by their side," Mr Hassan's brother-in-law said in a message on social media, according to The Malaysian Insight.
The official statement issued by Cradle Fund, said, "The post-mortem report concluded the cause of death as being complication of blast injuries attributable to an exploding hand phone that was being charged next to him."
"Cradle has lost a passionate, innovative and humble leader and the startup community has lost an inspiring leader. His vision and love for innovation will always be at the core of what we do. Nazrin loved his work, but his greatest love was for his wife and children," the statement added.
Cradle Fund is owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance that helps fund tech entrepreneurs and startups. Mr Hassan spent over 15 years promoting early-stage funding for tech startups. He was educated in the United Kingdom and had a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Buckingham.

Nazrin Hassan, the CEO of a Malaysian venture capital fund, died after one of his cellphones reportedly caught fire while it was charging in his bedroom. Conflicting reports have attributed his cause of death to blunt force trauma and smoke inhalation, but authorities say that they need more time to investigate exactly what happened.
Hassan was the Group CEO of the Cradle Fund, a VC that claims to have helped fund over 700 Malaysian tech startups. In a press release dated June 15, the Cradle Fund confirmed Hassan's death saying "the post mortem report concluded the cause of death as being complication of blast injuries attributable to an exploding hand phone that was being charged next to him."
That account echoes a social media message from Hassan's brother-in-law that was circulated in local reports about the incident. According to The Malaysian Insight, the brother-in-law claims that one of Hassan's phones overheated and exploded causing an object to hit him in the back of the head. "He had two phones, one Blackberry and a Huawei. We don't know which one exploded. Who would have thought such an innocuous routine procedure is the reason three young kids will grow up without their father by their side," the brother-in-law reportedly wrote. Previously, however, a police spokeperson told Malaysia's Star newspaper that the cause of death was "smoke inhalation and the body being burnt."
But on Wednesday, officials from the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department urged everyone not to jump to conclusions. The department's director, Azmi Osman, told the Malay Mail that it will be another week or two before the electronics testing laboratory can supply the results of its investigation. "The statement that the cause of fire was from a exploding handphone that was charged next to him was made by the family, not us," he said. He said that police are not involved at this time and they will only be brought in if something arises that causes suspicions of foul play.

Cradle Fund CEO Nazrin Hassan died a few days ago after one of his two smartphones exploded while charging in his Malaysia bedroom and it caught fire. From the available reports, it appears that the initial explosion caused some sort of injury that may have incapacitated the man. Smoke from the fire may have contributed to his death.
Hassan's brother-in-law said the mattress had caught fire, but Nazrin was already dead when that happened. It hasn't been confirmed at this point, but it appears as though the phone caused a blunt trauma to the back of Nazrin's head when it exploded.
"He had two phones, one Blackberry and a Huawei. We don't know which one exploded. Who would have thought such an innocuous routine procedure is the reason three young kids will grow up without their father by their side," Hassan's brother-in-law said in a message on social media, according to The Malaysian Insight.
