A 24-year-old man has been arrested after a "grossly offensive" Nazi demonstration in Melbourne on Saturday, where it's alleged he performed an outlawed Hitler salute in front of the public.

Around 30 people from the National Socialist Network (NSN) paraded from Melbourne's Federal Square to Flinders Street Station, dressed in all black with a large "mass deportation now" banner.

Victoria Police will investigate the actions of the man after he allegedly performed the Nazi salute at the steps of Flinders Street Station during an unplanned protest on Saturday.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the group quickly dispersed as officers responded.

"A 24-year-old North Melbourne man was arrested at the scene and was interviewed for grossly offensive public conduct," the spokesperson said.

He was released with intent to summons and will appear in court at a later stage.

Eight other males were also spoken to by police at the scene for offensive behaviour in a public place.

They were released with intent to summons.

Officers seized the banner, as well as a flag.

Police will assess the circumstances surrounding the demonstration and review vision of the incident and people involved.

Anthony Albanese has previously condemned the far-right Nationalist group after a similar event took place on a Sydney train in January, where dozens of balaclava-wearing neo-Nazis swarmed the Artarmon Station in the city's north.

In April, Victorian prosecutors lost a bid to send two of the group's leaders to jail over a violent targeted attack on a group of hikers in a state park.

A large group of the far-right Nationalists set upon six hikers at Cathedral Ranges State Park, forcing the victims to flee.

Australia's peak body representing the Jewish community said the demonstration was an appalling act.

The Executive Council of Australian Jewry's co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said there was a need to better equip young Australians to identify and debunk conspiracy theories.

"We have been warning of the rise of neo-Nazism in our country for some time and this is another disturbing example of their increasingly public and brazen methods of attracting attention, intimidating the public and appealing to lost youth looking for identity and purpose," Mr Ryvchin said.

"Soaring levels of anti-Semitism since October 7, driven by radical anti-Israel groups and their enablers, has shown the far-right that this is the right time to escalate their own public displays of hatred."

Victorian senator Ralph Babet has distanced himself from a neo-Nazi who published a photo appearing to give the Nazi salute while posing with the politician.

Nathan Bull, a member of the National Socialist Network (NSN), posted a photo of him with Babet on Saturday night on social media site X with the caption "Heil Ralph Babet, Heil our people", followed by two keyboard characters that look like a stick figure image of a person giving the gesture. The salute is outlawed in Victoria.

Bull also appears to be performing a partial Nazi salute in the photo, below shoulder height. Babet is looking into the camera, giving a thumbs up and is not looking at Bull's hand.

Babet, from the United Australia Party (UAP), told The Age on Sunday he had no knowledge of the photo, had not seen it and did not support Nazi ideology or the far right.

"I don't know the guy," he said. "Hundreds of people per month ask for a photo with me everywhere I go," he said.

"'Are you Ralph Babet?', 'Yes I am'. 'Can I have a photo?', 'OK, yeah sure.' That's the extent of it. 'See you later, bye'."

Babet said he only saw posts from his friends on X and hadn't seen Bull's posts because he and Bull were not friends on the platform.

"The far left and the far right have more in common with each other than what they seem, and they're all a bunch of losers," Babet said.

Derogatory comments about Babet's ethnicity also appear in response the social media post. The senator was born in the African nation of Mauritius.

Bull did not respond to questions when contacted by this masthead on Sunday. His profile on X quotes an article from this masthead in which he is described as a "highly active NSN member".

The NSN is Australia's largest neo-Nazi group. In March 2023, this masthead reported Bull was a frequent participant in the group's training events and had posted NSN propaganda on encrypted platforms.

The Herald Sun reported in June that he was being investigated for performing the Nazi salute during a protest in Melbourne's CBD. Victoria Police said it would review the new online image to see if any laws were broken.

Crikey reported last year that Babet's Telegram channel had previously been gatecrashed by neo-Nazis. The news website did not find any evidence that he had engaged with their content.

A white supremacist who was first to be charged with performing a Nazi salute in Victoria plans to drag the nation's top lawmakers into his legal case.

The Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday heard neo-Nazi Jacob Hersant, 24, required an adjournment of his matter due to a related "constitutional argument".

His lawyer, Sandra Gaunt, told the court her client intended to file notice of his argument with senior politicians, including Commonwealth Attorney General Mark Dreyfus and state Attorney General Jaclyn Symes.

The notice relates to section 78B of the Judiciary Act 1903 which "involves a matter arising under the Constitution or involving its interpretation".

It states that it is the duty of the court not to proceed in the case until it is satisfied that notice of the matter has been given to the Commonwealth and state attorneys generals.

"They may seek to be an interested party," Ms Gaunt told the court.

No further details of the constitutional argument were aired in court.

However at a previous hearing, Hersant told media outside court: "We should have free expression in this country. These laws are built on emotion and are anti-white".

Hersant performed the Nazi salute in front of media outside the County Court in late October after he and Thomas Sewell, the self-proclaimed leader of the National Socialist Network, were sentenced over a violent clash with bushwalkers at Cathedral Range State Park in May 2021.

Both men pleaded guilty to violent disorder over the incident, in which three bushwalkers who filmed the men were terrorised.

Hersant was sentenced to three days' prison time, already served, and ordered to perform 200 hours of community work.

Sewell was sentenced to one month and seven days' imprisonment - time he also already served.

Afterwards, Hersant raised his hand in a salute, stating: "Heil Hitler".

His gesture was made less than a week after Victoria's Nazi salute laws came into effect.

In December, Hersant told media he was not remorseful for the action and continues to perform the gesture daily.

The matter will return to court on February 29.

In a separate incident on Sunday morning, there was a heavy police presence at Artarmon Reserve as the members group once again gathered in public.

Pictures from the scene showed police watching on as a group of black-clad men congregated at the suburban park.

NSW Police said on Sunday morning that a police operation had concluded with no arrests after the group moved on without incident.

Police, including officers from the Raptor Squad and Public Order and Riot Squad, were called out to the reserve after the group of approximately 30 men began to gather around 8.30am.

"The group … was verbally served an updated Public Safety Order prohibiting them from entering further Sydney local government areas," NSW Police said.

"The group dispersed and there were no arrests."

Following the public incidents involving the National Socialist Network, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-CEO Alex Ryvchin said he was "heartbroken and alarmed by the return of genocidal antisemitism".

He said recent public displays of antisemitism should be a "source of shame" for society and were a "deep collective reflection on how little we have learned".

"We are reminded that the desire to destroy the Jews has not diminished, only the means to carry this out has been temporarily suppressed," Mr Ryvchin said.

"The audacity of anti-Semites in Australia, the freedom of mainstream online influencers, Neo-Nazi cells and supporters of jihadist terror to incite against our community with virtually no consequences, is particularly chilling."

Police stormed North Sydney train station on Australia Day following reports a group of about 60 men were boarding a train into the city wearing balaclavas and all-black outfits.

The men are affiliated with the National Socialist Network, which is led by convicted criminal Thomas Sewell.

Police arrested six members of the group on Friday morning and issued 61 infringement notices for offensive behaviour. Two members have since been released without charge.

It follows the NSW government's recent announcement that it will be conducting a review into section 93Z of the Crimes Act, which legislates laws against publicly threatening or inciting violence against someone based on the grounds of race, or religious belief or affiliation.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Saturday joined in the condemnation of the group's behaviour.

He said he was "horrified" by the images.

"I don't want to see people in balaclavas, dressed in black from head to toe, who are engaged in neo-Nazi activity in this country," he said.

"It has no place and it has rightly been condemned by all decent people".

'Unmask you': Premier Chris Minns' threat as Nazis gather in Sydney

NSW Premier Chris Minns has warned he is prepared to unmask people involved in the latest neo-Nazi gatherings in Sydney after police halted two demonstrations in less than 24 hours.

After police stopped a group of men wearing black clothing and balaclavas associated with the National Socialist Network on a train at North Sydney Station on Australia Day, police again broke up meetings of the far-right group at North Turramurra on Saturday evening and Artarmon on Sunday morning.

Premier Chris Minns labelled the group as "pathetic" and their behaviour as "fascist" and "ridiculous".

"Those who are attempting to menace people in an anonymous way in NSW, the police have the ability to unmask you," he said.

"So, in front of your family, your friends, your employers, your co-workers, you will be exposed as a massive racist."

The Premier has said he would be open to strengthening laws against "White Power salutes".

"We are looking at the laws and examining them to make sure that overt Nazi gestures and symbols are outlawed in New South Wales, and we'll make sure that the people of New South Wales are safe and we protect the tenants of our multicultural, harmonious community," he said.

It is the third day in a row that a group of masked men wearing all back have gathered in Sydney.

At North Turramurra on Sydney's upper north shore on Saturday evening, the group's leader Thomas Sewell was given a public safety order extension, banning him from several parts of Sydney until midnight on Sunday.

"Police have served a 31-year-old man with a Public Safety Order extension, prohibiting him from entering a number of local government areas in Sydney until midnight (on Sunday)," NSW Police said in a statement.

"The order extension was served (on Saturday) evening at North Turramurra."

On Saturday night, police descended on North Turramurra where dozens of members of the neo-Nazi group were meeting.

One local witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said the group began assembling around the local scout hall in the afternoon.

"There were a large number of young men in attendance, but also some young women, mostly wearing black clothing, and the scout hall was definitely open and ostensibly being used by the group," the resident told NCA Newswire.

A large police presence was seen around the hall, including about 10 police cars.

As the nation marked January 26 either through celebrating the country's National day or an 'Invasion Day' protest, dozens of balaclava and black-clad neo-Nazis tried to enter Sydney's CBD to hold a rally.

White supremacist Thomas Sewell, the head of Melbourne-based National Socialist Network, led the men into the city but the group were held on a train by police in North Sydney.

"Well, I was horrified by those images. They have no role in Australia," the Prime Minister said on Saturday.

"I don't want to see people in balaclavas dressed in black from head to toe, who are engaged in neo-Nazi activity in this country. It has no place and it is rightly being condemned by all decent people."

The Prime Minister noted the rise in extreme right wing activity and thanked NSW Police for preventing "what could have been a very dangerous activity".

"And on Australia Day, where we commemorate everything that is great about this country. We have a responsibility. We have to look to what unites us, not what divides us," he said.

"I say again, that people have a responsibility to avoid some of the activity that we've seen in promoting hatred in promoting division, because it is not the Australian way."

NSW Premier Chris Minns echoed the comments and said he would be open to strengthening laws against "white power salutes".

"There is no place for this kind of fascism, Neo-Nazism or far right extremism on this great day, Australia Day," he said.

"And the vast vast majority of people who live in the state would reject any notion or idea that far right extremists and neo-Nazis are needed on our National day."

In the same press conference, Mr Albanese continued to defend his government's tax backflip and has branded the stage three changes as "the right decision".

The Labor caucus unanimously endorsed the rewriting of the tax package, which the Prime Minister repeatedly promised would remain unchanged, with those on incomes under $150,000 to benefit the most.

The revised stage three plan will now see Australians earning $150,000 or more receive less of a tax cut than they would have under the Coalition's legislated package.

ACT independent senator David Pocock flagged his support for the reforms, but called on the government to use savings from the new package to increase welfare payments.

The Prime Minister stood by the tax changes formally announced earlier this week but said there was "no surplus money".

"One of the things that we have done is make sure that the $106 billion package, now a $107 billion package, we made sure that it was revenue neutral," he said.

"We know that low and middle income Australians are under financial pressure. It's a responsibility of the government to do something about it.

"We have made the right decision for the right reasons. And this will help particularly Middle Australia."

He said the reforms ensure every Australian gets a tax cut and batted away suggestions the rejig of stage three marked the start of his election campaigning.

"This is a response to Australians being under financial pressure," he answered.

"We want the fight against inflation to be front and centre."

Clad in balaclavas and black military-style uniforms, about 70 members of a neo-Nazi group boarded a train full of families in an attempt to stage their own pro-White Australia Day rally in Sydney yesterday.

In dramatic scenes, the group from the National Socialist Network were intercepted by police at North Sydney Station before becoming involved in a tense stand-off in a nearby park with heavily armed officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad.

The group were banned from taking part in Australia Day events before being escorted up the Pacific Hwy under the watch of the police helicopter and a large procession of police cars.

During the stand-off, the group's leader, convicted criminal and known far-right extremist Thomas Sewell, delivered a monologue to the throng of police calling them "cowards" and claiming his group was only planning to hold a peaceful "pro-white" rally in the Sydney CBD.

But Premier Chris Minns said: "Normal people don't celebrate Australia Day with a balaclava on".

"There is absolutely no tolerance for this behaviour," Mr Minns said.

Sewell claimed the group was planning a peaceful protest and said: "Unless someone attacks us, there's no violence."

On a day where the temperature nudged 40 degrees, concerned families watched as the group clad in military style boots and black uniforms with white power symbols on them boarded a train at Artarmon Station after midday.

At least one was holding a riot shield while others waved Australian flags, witnesses said.

The group demanded the train doors be left open as they marched onto a carriage in front of increasingly concerned families and children.

"They were all in the back carriage. I just thought: 'These guys look like trouble'," Jason, 48, from Baulkham Hills, said.

Jason said they ruined the Australia Day plans of himself and other passengers.

"I was hoping to see The Roulettes," he said. "I knew something was amiss after we left Artarmon and the train started to go really slow. After it got to Waverton and switched tracks, I knew something was really wrong."

The train driver terminated the journey at North Sydney Station, where scores of police held the train for three hours.

The officers evacuated members of the public before detaining the members of the white supremacist group.

Police demanded IDs from the men and ordered them to remove their masks before detaining those who refused to co-operate.

A police spokesman said six people were arrested and 55 people were given infringement for offensive behaviour on public transport. Investigations are continuing and police expect to lay charges.

Senior government minister Murray Watt has accused far-right influencers of "appearing to hijack the No campaign", as Fair Australia dismisses Yes camp warnings Warren Mundine was "encouraging violence" through a controversial tweet.

Both sides of the voice referendum debate have accused each other of violence and abuse, with a clash between Yes and No supporters outside a No campaign event in Brisbane on Wednesday night the latest confrontation on the campaign trail.

A member of the local chapter of the Proud Boys Ben Shand, known as the Dusty Bogan, was at the event headlined by Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Mr Mundine.

Government sources said this appeared to be part of a larger pattern of infiltration of the Proud Boys in the official No campaign, with Mr Shand asking his followers to "jump on the bandwagon boys" and volunteer for Fair Australia.

A government source said polling booths staffed by members of a right-wing group known for political violence could pose a security risk at polling places.

Former Gold Coast Young LNP chair Barclay McGain, who was suspended from the party and then resigned after video emerged of him laughing at a school leaver's suggestion Australia should stop celebrating Indigenous culture because it "couldn't even invent the bloody wheel", was also at Wednesday's No campaign event, which was attended by an estimated 950 people.

Tom Sewell, a neo-Nazi and self-proclaimed leader of the National Socialist Network, and self-described "white advocate" Joel Davis were at anti-voice rallies on the weekend, which were not organised by the No campaign.

Mr Sewell has been recruiting volunteers while quoting Senator Price warning against dividing the country along the lines of race.

Senator Watt said "some nasty elements" had joined No rallies.

"Now we're seeing them appearing to hijack the No campaign," he told The Australian.

"This is really concerning. Peter Dutton has demanded a high standard from yes campaigners in this debate - I expect he holds those same standards for the No campaign. He needs to explain what he's doing to make sure Liberal and other referendum volunteers aren't being exposed to these kind of nasty characters. We all have a responsibility to have a positive, respectful debate."

The Opposition Leader's spokeswoman noted he'd been on the record numerous times calling for the debate to be civil and respectful and he didn't control who was invited to events or what people said.

Fair Australia lashed Senator Watt's attack as "just desperate and divisive nonsense".

"They (the Yes campaign) should explain why Uluru Dialogue chairman Megan Davis marched beneath a Communist Party of Australia flag at the recent Yes rallies. Or why Yes23 board member Thomas Mayo gave regular briefings to the Search Foundation, which markets itself as a 'successor organisation of the Communist Party of Australia'," Fair Australia's spokesman said.

"Or why Yes23 volunteers are spitting on people and racially abusing Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price and Nyunggai Warren Mundine?"

Yes23 and the Uluru Dialogue, of which Professor Davis is co-chair, were approached for comment. There was a Communist Party flag behind Professor Davis at a Yes rally but she was not holding it - she was holding a "You're the voice: vote Yes" poster - or directly beneath it.

The No campaign was accused of "encouraging violence" on Thursday after Mr Mundine said he'd like to see a boxing fight between voice opponent and professional boxer Anthony Mundine and prominent voice supporter Thomas Mayo.

"I want to see that!!!" Mr Mundine tweeted on Wednesday alongside an emoji of a boxing glove and a Daily Mail story with the headline "No supporter Anthony Mundine says he wants to fight Voice architect Thomas Mayo".

The Uluru Dialogue, which helped create the Uluru Statement, responded: "After encouraging its volunteers to stoke confusion and fear among Australians, the No campaign has now made the abhorrent leap to encouraging violence.

"While Yes leader Noel Pearson spoke yesterday in the National Press Club of uniting Australians in love of country for a more positive future, No leader Warren Mundine publicly endorsed threats of violence against other Yes spokespeople. Could there be a clearer illustration of the choice for Australian people on 14 October?"

A Fair Australia spokesman said it was the Yes campaign "trying to divide Australians with the voice of division", defending Mr Mundine's tweet as "lighthearted".

Anti-fascist protesters rally outside neo-Nazi weightlifting event

Police stopped anti-fascism protesters from clashing with a group of neo-Nazis holding a "white powerlifting competition" at a boxing gym in Melbourne's west on Saturday.

Dozens of anti-fascism protesters marched to the Legacy Boxing Gym in Sunshine West, walking down Industrial Drive just before 3pm chanting "unite, unite, unite to fight the right", before calling on the white supremacists to face them in the street.

The neo-Nazi group waved at the protesters and performed Sieg Heil salutes from behind a fence, but did not leave the gym - previously linked to far-right groups - while demonstrators were outside.

The protest ended about 3.30pm.

Before the protest began, a small group of balaclava-clad white supremacists walked outside the gym, which was adorned with Nazi symbolism.

Barricades, two police lines and a buffer zone separated both groups. Victoria Police had declared the area around the gym a designated area, allowing officers to search people and vehicles for weapons, and remove anyone from the area they suspected intended to brawl.

White supremacist groups the National Socialist Network and the European Australian Movement were holding a two-day event for members of the "Nationalist community" at the gym, which has been connected to some of Victoria's most prominent neo-Nazis.

The event was organised by prominent white supremacy activist Thomas Sewell and was promoted in flyers circulated on encrypted chats as a "white powerlifting competition" and luncheon, with speeches and seminars to be held at a secret location for pre-approved guests only.

"Neo-Nazis are desperately trying to build a following, and they're doing it in the heart of one of Melbourne's most multicultural suburbs," rally organiser Jasmine Duff said.

"Their aim, as always, is to draw in more angry, violent men and build a movement that preaches hate, discrimination, and violence against the rest of Australia."

An investigation by The Age last year uncovered links between Legacy Boxing Gym, well-known Neo-Nazi activists, and a growing community of young men boxing at the gym.

Images posted in encrypted far-right chat groups captured a secret event at the gym last year, which was adorned with swastika and SS flags, as well as other far-right symbolism.

Sewell, who was convicted of assaulting a Channel Nine security guard earlier this year, was photographed at the event posing with a child and dozens of other far-right supporters.

This masthead also uncovered several pictures showing gym director Timothy Holger Lutze and young members of the gym making Nazi salutes.

Pro LGBQTI+ supporters defied protesters at a family event - hosted by a drag queen at a Sydney library - targeted by right-wingers and anti-queer groups on Saturday.

The demonstrators were far outnumbered by supporters of the WorldPride-linked "Drag Queen Story Time at Manly Library" with entertainer Charisma Belle.

As the more than 40 ticket holders arrived, made up of parents and carers with small children, a group of about 50 pro-LGBQTI+ demonstrators cheered, chanted and applauded as they entered the library just before 10.30am.

There was a considerable police presence in Market Square at Manly, including officers from the Public Order & Riot Squad.

There had been fears that a series of social media posts in the lead up to the event, urging those who opposed the show aimed at children aged three and above, would provoke anti-queer and anti-trans anger.

A group called Sydney Queer Alerts said that at least 45 anti-gay, transphobic, conspiracy theory and far right wing organisations - including the National Socialist Network - were encouraging members to disrupt the Drag Queen event, hosted by Northern Beaches Council.

Sydney Queer Alerts, set up to tackle "queer and trans anti-fascism around the Sydney region", feared the anti-gay protesters would harass people walking into the event.

Supporters of the LGBQTI+ community encouraged people to rally at the library to act as a "welcoming committee" to block would-be protesters.

"Supporters are encouraged to peacefully gather around the library, create a warm and welcoming environment for the attendees, and assist staff in ensuring that attendees can arrive and leave safely," Sydney Queer Alerts tweeted last week.

Less than a dozen anti-event protesters showed up.

Many of them were wearing bandannas to hide their identities.

"We're here, basically, because we object to the fact that this event is marketed to children as young as three," one protester, who asked not to be named, told the Manly Daily.

"We believe it's wildly inappropriate to be projecting these gender ideologies on impressionable young children."

The man said he was not part of any organisation, but that he and his companions were "young Christian guys who object to this happening in our country".

"We wanted to show up and represent people in our community who have our views."

Jules Kelly, a drag queen entertainer, said she answered the social media invitation to support the story time event.

"We wanted to make sure that little kids and their families get to go to a really nice event at the library without feeling scared or intimidated," Jules said.

"I believe in most communities around Australia there is a lot more love than there is hate."

Charisma Belle, said last week that she would be reading age-appropriate books that were already available in the library.

"They all have a common theme, usually to do with love and family, what makes family," she said. "We talk about different types of families."

A young northern beaches mother, who took her 18-month-old daughter to the event and did not want to be named, said the event was "fantastic".

"It was great, everyone was happy and we all felt really safe," she said.

"There should more things like this on the northern beaches."

Northern Beaches Police said no arrests were made and there were no scuffles between opposing groups.

Eracleous' proclivity for extremity first emerged publicly in 2014, while he was serving as treasurer of the Melbourne University Young Liberals.

He was outed by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald as one of a small group of Young Liberals posting highly offensive sexist and homophobic material. In one post, Eracleous described feminist author Germaine Greer, as a "lying f-cking c-m guzzling slut ... and a union member".

He left mainstream politics and disappeared from public view, spending the next few years mixing in Melbourne's neo-Nazi scene. In 2019, court records reveal he hit the radar of Victoria Police's counter-terror command intelligence unit. Eracleous was charged with using a carriage service to offend, but he avoided a criminal conviction in July 2020 by admitting to his offending as part of a program aimed at redirecting first-time offenders away from the criminal justice system.

The court case did not steer him away from radicalism. Rather, his online postings - using several aliases on encrypted platforms - became more extreme. After the Christchurch terror attack in March 2019, Eracleous began posting the number "51" in his messages as a sly nod to other neo-Nazis signalling his support of the attack, which left 51 people dead.

"Quick announcement. It's my birthday today. Let's celebrate by spamming 51," Eracleous wrote in one online post.

In late 2020, his online footprints suggest Eracleous (who did not respond to repeated efforts to contact him) began mixing with the National Socialist Network. The NSN was Australia's most active neo-Nazi group before two of its key leaders were arrested by police last year, around the same time its inner workings were exposed in a joint investigation by The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes.

Last March, just before these arrests and media exposure crippled the group, one of its leaders, Bradley Ingram, used an online alias to announce in an encrypted neo-Nazi forum that Eracleous was "now officially under the protection of the National Socialist Network".

Eracleous' dealings with the NSN almost certainly placed him again on the radar of state and federal security agencies, who regard the group as a key intelligence gathering target. Yet there is no evidence Eracleous or the NSN as a whole is considered a terror threat. While three of the group's members or adherents are facing terror charges, the danger of the NSN - according to state and federal officials not authorised to speak publicly - is as an incubator for political violence.

These sources also describe the NSN as a disorganised, amateurish outfit, riven with internal conflicts. The reason Eracleous needed the group's protection was that, according to social media posts, he had fallen out with other neo-Nazis.

A high proportion of the NSN's members have also engaged in alleged criminal activity, drawing constant police attention and charges. Court records reveal that in the next month, two mid-ranking NSN members will face the Melbourne Magistrates Court over summary (less serious) criminal offences: Dean Lynch, for possessing a prohibited weapon, and another young Victorian man for family violence order breaches.

The charges point to the quiet strategy of NSW and Victorian police counter-terror commands to intensely monitor members of active neo-Nazi groups and seek to lay charges, no matter how minor, when they transgress the law.

Official sources also make clear that agencies don't regard the threat posed by the neo-Nazi movement Eracleous is part of as comparable to that posed by groups such as Islamic State. "Most of these NSN guys are blowhards," says one security source. Still, this doesn't discount the intense fear they can cause those they troll on video and posts, including female politicians.

Door open to more far-right listings

Andrews, who replaced Peter Dutton as home affairs minister in a reshuffle in late March, kept the door open to listing other far-right groups in future.

"I will continue to take advice from ASIO in particular but also the Department of Home Affairs, and also from other agencies here in Australia," she told reporters in Canberra.

"I am very open to the prospect of looking at any of the organisation that threaten to do Australians harm and where they meet the threshold, I will not hesitate to list."

The Proud Boys, a neo-fascist group listed as a terrorist organisation in Canada, has not been designated as such in Australia.

Sonnenkrieg Division was listed in Australia in August, with the government describing it as a "UK-based extreme right-wing organisation which adheres to a violent white-supremacist ideology".

Andrews said the views of violent extremist groups were "a stain" on Australia's "rich cultural fabric", adding: "There is no place in Australia for their hateful ideologies."

She denied there was any political calculation in revealing the listing of both The Base and Hezbollah at the same time, saying she looked at each recommendation that came to her "independently".

James Paterson, the Liberal senator who chairs parliament's intelligence and security committee, welcomed both listings. Designating Hezbollah in its entirety is in line with a bipartisan recommendation his committee made earlier this year.

"I thank the minister for home affairs for acting on the committee's recommendation and recognising the overwhelming evidence that all of Hezbollah is responsible for its decades-long global campaign of violent terror against innocent civilians," Paterson said on Wednesday.

After the head of ASIO, Mike Burgess, mentioned the extreme rightwing threat in his first annual threat assessment speech in February last year, Dutton raised concerns about extremism of the "far left" and "far right", saying the authorities would tackle any threats posed by either "rightwing lunatics or leftwing lunatics".

Labor's home affairs spokesperson, Kristina Keneally, welcomed the move to list The Base, saying it would be only the second right-wing terrorist group proscribed by the Australian government.

"However, both of these groups are overseas groups, with limited activity in Australia," Keneally said.

"Labor urges the government to look closely at the far-right groups known to be active within Australia, such as the National Socialist Network."

Keneally urged the government to act on ASIO's warnings about right-wing extremism: "As the violent threats at recent protests demonstrate, we can't dismiss or ignore this growing threat to our community safety."

She also noted the Hezbollah listing was in line with a bipartisan committee recommendation.

Before Wednesday's announcement, there were 26 terrorist organisations listed under Australia's criminal code. The federal government has begun the process of consulting state and territory governments about the proposed new listings.

The federal election is due by May and the Coalition has been seeking to emphasise it is "strong" on National security, despite generally bipartisan agreement on major security challenges.

Searby was in touch with the then US leader of the Proud Boys, Enrique Tarrio, who praised Searby for a video posted online.

But it was his talent as a martial arts instructor that reminded Sewell's right-hand man, Jacob Hersant, of one of the most dangerous neo-Nazis in Europe, Russia's Denis Nikitin.

The founder of extremist clothing and MMA brand White Rex, Nikitin has been banned from entering several European countries. In a 2018 interview, he explained White Rex was a tool to promote his white supremacist ideology: "If we kill one immigrant every day, that's 365 immigrants in a year. But tens of thousands more will come anyway ... So now we fight for minds, not on the street, but on social media."

Nikitin was already an inspiration to the National Socialist Network (NSN) and Hersant disclosed on a hidden camera that the NSN had introduced Searby to him.

"He is a really good dude," Hersant said of the Russian. "I got him into contact with Jaz and they just see eye to eye coz they are both interested in the MMA stuff," Hersant told the mole.

Another senior NSN member explained that if Searby replicated Nikitin's MMA neo-Nazi Network, it could give the NSN an offshoot operation that counter-terror authorities could not easily ban.

"It is just a good way of sort of like protecting ourselves as well. If our organisation gets proscribed as a terror group, you know Jaz can still operate, because he is not affiliated, he can still operate as a gym, just an MMA gym."

Proscription is no idle fear. The leaders of the joint parliamentary security committee this week agreed, across the political aisle, that the National Socialist Network should be considered for banning.

After Searby's introduction to Nikitin, the Australian hosted the Russian on a video podcast, praising him for starting "white boy fight clubs".

"There is [sic] not many men left in the West willing to fight for what they believe," Searby told Nikitin. "I'm a big fan ... The people here in Australia will be inspired to see you standing up."

Leadership spill

By April this year, Searby's role inside the National Socialist Network was growing. Sewell revealed in the secret recordings that he had directed Searby to offer the group's financial support to an Albury-Wodonga teenager and alleged neo-Nazi facing terrorism charges.

"Jaz and his mate have been knocking on the [alleged terrorist's mother's] door every day. I found his address, but she hasn't been home," Sewell was recorded saying. Sewell had explained it was the NSN's duty to contribute to his bail fund. "He is one of our boys …. We spread and share the risk. That's how it works."

By late April, Searby had agreed to start training neo-Nazis, travelling to Melbourne to teach MMA to National Socialist Network recruits. When Sewell was remanded in custody on May 13 over an alleged assault - a charge which he is contesting - Hersant, the group's interim leader, asked Searby to lead the fight training sessions that Sewell usually oversaw.

He agreed, but Searby also spied an opportunity.

While Searby had publicly called for authorities to "free Tom Sewell", he was privately scathing of the NSN's unquestioning support for its leader.

"Everyone is saying Tom is a political prisoner - I'm saying you can't f-cking say that because once it comes out that Tom's done something wrong, if he has, we are all going to look like f-cking idiots."

Hersant, Searby said, was also too weak to lead the NSN.

"That's my only problem with Jacob ... he is definitely very smart, but he's a very soft kid ... I'm not going to follow a 22-year-old … And I know, I coached them, I watched them fight."

Away from the NSN base, Searby confided in the undercover agent that, with Sewell in jail and the membership splintering, Searby could make his own play at becoming leader.

"I know all eyes are on me at the moment and I need to make the right decision."

In early August, Hersant was still promoting himself as NSN leader, but he too is now facing assault charges. Sources say Searby is now a core member of the NSN's leadership cell and increasingly looking to take control of the white supremacist movement in Australia's south-east.

If Searby and Sewell had developed their own recruiting model, they were not alone. Sewell's NSN was partnering with group's other than the Proud Boys. And Searby was not the only committed extremist with overseas links and big ambitions.

From kickboxing to Adolf Hitler: the neo-Nazi plan to recruit angry young men

An unprecedented look inside Australia's radical fringe shows their deep links to violent interNational groups, and what they'll do if they are banned.

Sitting on the back deck of his home on the Victorian border town of Barnawartha, his outline blurred by bong smoke, a petty criminal and martial arts instructor is discussing the idea of taking over Australia's largest neo-Nazi group.

Jarrad "Jaz" Searby, a convicted criminal and gym owner, was until May the head of an Australian chapter of the right-wing extremist group Proud Boys.

The group, which became infamous for bolstering Donald Trump and provoking confrontations in Black Lives Matter protests and the Capitol invasion, and which has been designated a terrorist organisation in Canada, has always stopped short of identifying itself as neo-Nazi. It has publicly disavowed anti-Semitism and its founder described it as "Western chauvinist", "anti-political correctness" and "anti-white guilt".

Now Searby is explaining how things really work.

Talking to an infiltrator working deep inside the neo-Nazi National Socialist Network, Searby said his now-defunct chapter of the Proud Boys had been set up as a front, funnelling young men from the suburbs and towns of Australia through martial arts training, through "anti-white guilt", then on to full-fledged neo-Nazism.

Once in, those recruits become part of a linked Network of domestic and interNational groups considered by counter-terrorism authorities to be far more dangerous than the Proud Boys. Secret recordings revealed last week by The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and 60 Minutes show that inside that Network operated a cult-like breeding ground for extremism, with groups ready to split off, splinter and form new cells if one was banned or a key leader jailed.

The investigations have also, for the first time, revealed the identity of the secretive leaders involved in a wave of extremist recruiting across Australia.

Dangerous liaisons

In August this year, in a report for the US military's Combating Terrorism Centre, extremist researchers Mathew Kriner and John Lewis describe how some factions of the US Proud Boys "acted as a 'gateway' for even more extreme groups", including interNational neo-Nazi terror group The Base.

The report also observed how the "tactics" used by some Proud Boys to "evade detection and maintain plausible deniability" about their support for political violence and neo-Nazism would "outlive" the group and be adopted by offshoots and splinter groups. Missing, though, was direct evidence.

Enter "Jaz" Searby.

The resident of a small red brick house in the border town of Barnawartha near the Murray River, Searby is opening up to an undercover agent assisting The Age, the Herald and 60 Minutes. Months earlier, the agent successfully infiltrated the National Socialist Network's Racism HQ in Melbourne. Now, as his last assignment, the mole has peeled off from the group for several meetings with Searby, whose importance, he feels, is growing.

"You know they ban any, like, they ban Nazis from the [Proud Boys] club ... you know if you start to ask Jewish questions or something like that in the Proud Boys they will basically just try to kick you out," Searby explained, unaware he was being recorded.

Searby, 37, has been introduced to the mole by Tom Sewell as one of the NSN's key allies. He was one of four of the Proud Boys' Victorian leaders but, growing angry at the group's public disavowal of neo-Nazism and white supremacy, he'd decided to leave after using its brand to gain a band of several dozen followers.

His unkempt appearance and face tattoos are a stark contrast to Sewell's army haircut and anti-drugs persona, but it was clear the two had struck an accord.

"Tom's obviously, he was at the f-ckin far end of the scale [of racism], and you know me being more central was you know, I was with the Proud Boys, I had planned to be a gateway to Tom," Searby explains. "I was going to funnel people in that direction, you know basically funnel people to do their own research, but we would generally lead them in that direction anyway."

Neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell arrested during counter-terrorism raid on Melbourne home

Leader of neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network Thomas Sewell has been arrested during a counter-terrorism raid at his home in Melbourne's southeast.

The 28-year-old was arrested along with a 22-year-old man at a Rowville property early this morning.

Mr Sewell posted "getting raided" on social media just before 5am today, before being escorted out of his home by police on a loudspeaker.

Police in a statement said the arrests follow an alleged armed robbery at the Cathedral Range State Park in Taggerty, the state's north-east, last Saturday.

Investigators allege a group of men smashed a car window and threatened the passengers inside with a knife, before making off with their mobile phones.

No charges have been laid and the investigation remains ongoing, police said.

Mr Sewell had been on bail after being charged over a separate alleged violent attack on a security guard at Channel 9's Melbourne headquarters in March.

The man allegedly punched the security guard multiple times outside the television Network's headquarters in Docklands.

The alleged assault was captured on video by Mr Sewell's associate and later posted online.

He was charged with affray, recklessly cause injury and unlawful assault over the attack.

The Australian Federal Police is pushing for bans on flags and insignia linked to terrorist groups and the spread of extremist material including violent images and videos, saying parts of the criminal law are out of step with community expectations.

Deputy Commissioner Ian McCartney said the AFP was particularly concerned about younger people being influenced by graphic material on the internet, which he described as a "force multiplier of hate".

He told a parliamentary inquiry into extremist movements and radicalism in Australia his agency supported the criminalisation of flags promoting terrorism and other terrorist insignia. There were no circumstances where people should be accessing and sharing instructional terrorist manuals, propaganda and graphically violent images and videos, he said, other than for genuine research or journalistic purposes.

Mr McCartney said there was a gap in the law, adding: "We think certain aspects of current criminal laws are out of step with community expectations."

AFP figures reveal four of the 26 people arrested over the past year for terrorism offences were "ideologically motivated" extremists with Nationalist and racist beliefs. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation told the inquiry ideologically motivated extremism had grown from about 30 per cent of its priority counter-terrorism caseload to 40 per cent over the past 12 months.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess said there had been two "major disruptions" of ideologically motivated extremist threats since 2016. AFP officials later confirmed in the inquiry this referred to planned attacks in Melbourne, for which right-wing extremist Phillip Michael Galea, 36, was sentenced to at least nine years' jail; and an alleged plot to attack an electrical substation in NSW.

Mr Burgess said law enforcement agencies in multiple states had taken action recently against individuals with links to Nationalist and racist groups, "focusing on offences relating to possession of extremist material, racial vilification and wilful damage".

He reiterated the threat of a terrorist attack in Australia was "plausible" over the next 12 months, saying it came from a mix of lone actors and small cells.

He said Sunni Islamic violent extremism remained the biggest threat, but ideologically motivated extremism was the fastest-growing threat. ASIO anticipated the threat from white supremacist and Nationalist extremism "will not diminish anytime soon".

"We are facing a growing assortment of ideologically motivated violent extremists - both individuals and groups who are driven by a diverse range of grievances," Mr Burgess said. "This reflects both an interNational trend and our decision to dedicate more resources to this threat. The face of this threat is evolving.

"More often than not, they are young, well-educated, articulate and middle class and not easily identified … These violent extremists are acutely security conscience and adapt their security posture to avoid attention."

The Age and the Sydney Morning Herald revealed dozens of far-right extremists gathered in the Grampians and Halls Gap over the Australia Day weekend, chanting white supremacist slogans, raising their arms in Nazi salutes and waving flags.

But Mr Burgess said it was "important to put this threat in context".

"The National Socialist Network is not ISIL; the Grampians is not a caliphate. And while the threat from ideologically motivated violent extremism is real, you should be reassured that ASIO and our law enforcement partners are on the case," he said.

Alfred Deakin Institute terrorism and radicalisation expert Professor Michele Grossman told NCA NewsWire the capacity of far-right groups to mobilise and get people to do things had increased over the past three years.

"There certainly has been an increase in what you might call far-right extremist narratives that have been primarily enabled by online environments," she said.

"They didn't just start with Christchurch, but what has changed is this capacity to mobilise, better organise and because of social media and the broader media environment, their capacity to inspire people to go off and conduct lone actor attacks has increased.

"What they do is reinforce particular ways of seeing the world and particular solutions to problems and it's especially concerning when those solutions are taken offline and out into the physical world, in terms of things like conducting violence, then we really have to worry."

Professor Grossman said proscription was useful in enabling governments to respond and manage threats but could also have the "unintended halo effect" of increasing the status of a particular group that could generate further support.

"We will never be able to completely eliminate harmful material in digital environments, instead what we need to do is try to tackle it through building resilience to what people may encounter online," she said.

"You need to build people's ability to be critical about what they see and what they're reading and build their resilience to toxic messages that seek to get them thinking about harming others or the community in general as a way of addressing their grievances."

Sewell, 27, was arrested and charged by counter-terrorism police with affray, recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault after Monday's incident but has already been spruiking his "white replacement" conspiracy views over encrypted messaging after being released on bail.

He has also appealed for donations to fund his defence in court.

"They're alleging a crime was committed, we're obviously going to fight that in court," he told his followers.

"They've been monitoring us for years and they've never once raided me personally or our HQ ... we have as an organisation committed no crimes."

Most members of the Australian neo-Nazi groups hide their identities by wearing face coverings in photos, but Jacob Hersant of the National Socialist Network is one who has revealed himself.

He told NCA NewsWire his group sought to spread the message and creed of National socialism to as many people as possible and, "ultimately survive as a free and distinct nation".

"This means strengthening our community, increasing in numbers and building understanding on National Socialism and the importance of National and racial survival," he said.

In a statement, ASIO said the agency had been dedicating additional resources to the evolving far-right threat and primarily investigated individuals or groups based on their use or advocacy of violence.

It comes as Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton this week revealed UK-based neo-Nazi group Sonnenkrieg Division would become the first far-right group formally listed as a terrorist organisation in Australia.

A parliamentary committee in Victoria also recommended outlawing the Nazi swastika symbol in the state, which Premier Daniel Andrews indicated the government would support.

There are calls for other extreme far-right groups to be banned in Australia too, including the National Socialist Network and Proud Boys.

Dr Abramovich said it would allow the full weight of law enforcement agencies to be brought in to combat the threat.

"It allows them to suspend bank accounts and seize property but it also makes any activity they are involved in illegal," he told NCA NewsWire.

"By classifying them as a terrorist organisation it provides law enforcement with the tools, resources and reach to actually deal with the National threat."

Mr Dutton also asked the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security to look into the influence of extremist groups that fell short of the legislative thresholds for proscription and advise on changes to listing laws to ensure they addressed all threats.

"Whether a particular group is listed or not, our laws focus on threat and criminality, and we will act against those who advocate violence," a spokeswoman for Mr Dutton said.

There are 27 organisations listed as terrorist organisations under the Criminal Code.

Dr Abramovich said Brenton Tarrant, the Australian terrorist who carried out the March 2019 Christchurch mosque attack that killed 51 people, self-radicalised online before committing the massacre.

He said Tarrant frequented social media platforms and was sharing ideas with Australian extremist groups online.

"We can't ignore this form of extremism, you only need one lone individual to actually believe the white race is under threat and that they need to act," Dr Abramovich said.

"They dream of a Fourth Reich with an Australia Hitler at the helm.

"We don't need to wait for a Christchurch in our cities to act. The danger that they are spewing can easily cross the line into real world lethal attacks, especially because these groups and these individuals are inspired heroes or martyrs who have carried out massacres, people like Brenton Tarrant.

"I'm glad Minister Dutton has already begun the process of classifying one white supremacist group as a terrorist organisation and I hope he is going to extend these classifications to other local groups."

The brazen and unprovoked alleged attack on a Channel 9 security guard this week has highlighted the "dangerous" and alarming rise of the far-right movement across Australia.

The speed at which neo-Nazi leader Thomas Sewell allegedly escalated to violence sent shivers down the spine of civil rights activists who have been monitoring the behaviour of these individuals over recent years.

Far-right groups - spurred on by the dream of an "Australian Hitler" - have dramatically increased their activities on Australian soil in recent years as new cells pop up.

The Grampians, the National Museum in Canberra, the Story Bridge in Brisbane, Swinburne University and the Brisbane Synagogue are some of the places where these groups have congregated to spread their message of hate, white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideology.

A relatively new group to Australia - the National Socialist Network - claims to have an active footprint in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and a number of regional cities.

The nation's spy agency, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, says increasing numbers of young Australians - some just 14 years old - are being radicalised by both extreme right wing and Islamist groups.

ASIO director-general Mike Burgess told a parliamentary committee last year that right-wing extremists now represented between 30 and 40 per cent of the agency's priority caseload.

"Many of these individuals and groups have seized on COVID-19 as proof of their ideology, and are using the pandemic to amplify their messages of hate online," he said.

"We are seeing young Australians - some just 14 years old - being radicalised."

Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dvir Abramovich, one of the nation's leading anti-hate campaigners, said far-right extremist groups had "weaponised the internet".

"They are using it now to reach out to young, disaffected white men to try and recruit them," he said.

Dr Abramovich said the government needed to reach some kind of agreement with social media companies and tech giants to stop access to extremist ideologies.

"Today with a click or a swipe you can find horrifying anti-Semitism, neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideology that would make those Nazis proud," he said.

"In the same way you withdraw a deceptive product from the shelf, (social media companies) need to stop these neo-Nazis and white supremacists, they need to withdraw accessibility to those platforms.

"They also need to include more human monitoring, because if they read some of the stuff that is being posted, surely they would realise that they are violating community guidelines."

A right-wing extremist group is set to be formally listed as a terrorist organisation for the first time in Australia.

Sonnenkrieg Division, a UK-based neo-Nazi group, will be effectively banned in Australia once its listing as a terror group is confirmed.

The group has been outlawed in the UK since early last year, and members have been convicted of encouraging terrorism, disseminating terror material, and preparations for a terrorist act.

Two Sonnenkrieg Division members were convicted in 2019 for plotting to attack the British royal family.

Decisions to list terror groups are made on the advice of security agencies like ASIO.

As a result of the listing, it will become an offence to be a member of the group, fund the group, or in some circumstances associate with members of the group.

Penalties can range to up to 25 years in prison.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has written to Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese, and all state and territory leaders, proposing the listing.

There are currently 27 listed terror groups in Australia, including Islamic terror groups like Al Qaeda, Islamic State, Boko Haram and Jemaah Islamiyah.

Increasing focus on right-wing terror

Australian security agencies have advised there are currently no Australians directly involved with Sonnenkrieg Division.

But a gathering of white supremacists in regional Victoria in January prompted calls for other right-wing groups to be listed.

Stickers promoting the "National Socialist Network" were reported by some residents in the Grampians during the group's visit.

Some reported the group burned a cross, performed Nazi salutes and chanted white supremacist slogans.

Despite police investigations, no laws were found to be broken, which led to some experts to call for the National Socialist Network to be similarly listed.

Mr Dutton has previously asked Federal Parliament's powerful Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security to look into groups that fall short of meeting the threshold for listing, but still pose a threat.

The committee would consider what possible law changes could be made to better address such groups.

Labor has previously called for the government to declare far-right group Proud Boys as terrorists.

The Senate voted 34-27 to substantially rewrite the motion, with Pauline Hanson's One Nation, Centre Alliance's Stirling Griff and independents Rex Patrick and Jacqui Lambie siding with the Coalition.

The revised motion deleted the observation far-right extremism is on the rise, claiming instead Australia is "one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world".

References to Kelly and Christensen were deleted, although condemnation of the National Socialist Network was retained.

The government leader in the Senate, Simon Birmingham, said the amendment "makes clear this Senate condemns all forms of extremism and allows for a unifying motion".

Birmingham accused Labor of proposing a motion "for wedge purposes" and said condemnation of far-right and far-left extremism would "condemn extremism and show respect for all Australians".

Keneally said the government had decided to "white out the advice of National security agencies" including the home affairs department secretary, Michael Pezzullo, Asio, the Australian federal police, and the treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, who has warned that antisemitism and Holocaust denial is on the rise.

"[Rightwing extremism] is the terrorist threat we must confront," Keneally said. "This government has sought to downplay it and dismiss it. That's what this amendment has sought to do."

Labor supported the amended motion, while the Greens indicated if a vote had been taken they would have opposed it.

Responding to news Canada has listed the Proud Boys as a terrorist organisation, Keneally told reporters in Canberra Australia is the only Five Eyes country that has not listed a far-right group.

Keneally said failing to proscribe groups banned in the UK and Canada "sends the message we're turning a blind eye" to right-wing extremism.

The home affairs minister, Peter Dutton, said he had increased funding to Asio and the AFP and "constantly raised with them the threat of lunatic fringe groups like this one [the Proud Boys]".

"It is not a political decision to proscribe a terrorist organisation," Dutton said.

"If the director-general of Asio makes a judgement that there should be an organisation or an individual proscribed, then I act on that advice."

A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs said Australia's law enforcement agencies "focus on threat and criminality regardless of ideology or motivation".

Labor has accused the government of seeking to "downplay and dismiss" the threat of rightwing extremism in contradiction of National security advice, after the immigration minister, Alex Hawke, denied extremism is on the rise in Australia.

Hawke made the comments on Sky News on Thursday morning, and was backed by his Senate colleagues who rewrote a motion deleting references to a "significant increase in far-right extremism" in Australia.

Labor had moved a Senate motion seeking to condemn far-right extremism, including claims about voter fraud in the US election and the cause of the Capitol insurrection promoted by Liberal MP Craig Kelly and National MP George Christensen.

The motion passed on Thursday, but only after references to Kelly and Christensen were removed, and condemnation of far-left extremism, communism, anarchism and violence generally were added.

In the wake of the Christchurch massacre, Australia's spy agency Asio has been blunt about the risk from far-right terrorism, labelling it an "enduring threat" that is "real and growing". It estimates that far-right violent extremism now constitutes up to 40% of its counter-terrorism priority caseload.

Commenting on the Scanlon report, which found rising complaints of racism, particularly among Chinese-Australians, Hawke said "the government rejects [shadow home affairs minister Kristina] Keneally's thesis, that there is rising extremism in Australia".

"It is extreme elements, fringe elements, in Australia that need tackling, they are being tackled," he told Sky News. "What we have here is increased social cohesion, not increasing extremism."

The comments echo home affairs minister Peter Dutton's attempts in February 2020 to blunt warnings about far-right extremism by warning of "leftwing terrorism", which he falsely claimed included Islamist groups.

In the Senate, Labor moved to condemn rightwing extremism, including the National Socialist Network, an Australian neo-Nazi organisation that "caused fear" in the Grampians on Australia Day and InterNational Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The draft motion also condemned Kelly and Christensen for "promotion of a range of conspiracy theories and misinformation campaigns relating to Covid-19, climate change, voter fraud, and false-flag operations in the United States".

Kelly and Christensen deny promoting misinformation and conspiracy theories, although both have questioned the election of US president Joe Biden by claiming he may have benefited from "dodgy" votes and argued that far-left Antifa members may have been present in the US Capitol insurrection.

Kelly has promoted unproven treatments for Covid-19, and was backed by Christensen on free speech grounds, before the prime minister, Scott Morrison, urged him to stop undermining the government's vaccination messaging.

Alarm as neo-Nazi group National Socialist Network expands to Adelaide

A Melbourne-based neo-Nazi group that has vowed to bring about a "white revolution" has raised alarm after expanding its presence into Adelaide.

The National Socialist Network, which has openly described Indigenous Australians as "subhuman and monkeys", posted a photo of eight members performing the Hitler salute and displaying a flag in the South Australian capital.

The members were all dressed in black and wearing balaclavas over their faces.

The neo-Nazi group's Jacob Hersant confirmed to NCA NewsWire it was active in Adelaide as well as Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth and several regional cities.

But he would not reveal how many members or associates the group had.

He said by expanding across the country members ultimately hoped to "survive as a free and distinct nation" by strengthening their community and numbers.

Human rights advocates told NCA NewsWire they were concerned the recent language from the white supremacist group was becoming more "militant".

When asked about the group, South Australia Police said they always undertook some level of monitoring of any individual or group where information indicated there was a potential risk or harm to the safety of the South Australian community.

ASIO said extreme right-wing groups and individuals represented a serious, increasing and evolving threat to security, with the tragedy in Christchurch in 2019 a stark example.

It said the groups were increasingly radicalising numbers of young Australians - some barely in their teens - and while Islamic extremism was ASIO's greatest concern, the extreme and violent right wing had been in its sights for many decades.

A National security agency spokesperson said it was dedicating additional resources to the evolving threat of right-wing groups.

"It represents a growing proportion of our priority counter-terrorism caseload," they said.

"Unfortunately, extreme right-wing groups are more organised, sophisticated and security conscious than before.

"These groups are becoming increasingly ideological, more aware of and committed to specific dogmas, philosophies and views, many of which support or glorify violence.

"They draw from a diverse variety of ideas, and they are attracting a younger membership who display few overt signs of their extremist ideology."

Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dvir Abramovich, who first exposed the National Socialist Network, told NCA NewsWire the group's expansion should serve as a wake-up call that racism and extremism were very much alive in Australia.

"Hate is on full-throated display, we must use every measure to stamp out these evil groups," Dr Abramovich said.

"At any point, the ugly rhetoric that these Hitler worshippers are spewing can cross the line into real-world lethal attacks, especially since such groups glorify and are inspired by 'heroes' or 'martyrs' who have carried out massacres.

"There is no doubt that white supremacists, who are growing appreciably more agitated, angry and emboldened, are waging a National campaign of harassment, ratcheting up their intimidation in an attempt to expand their base and recruit new members to their dangerous cause."

The Australian Federal Police said politically motivated extremism was increasing.

"It is a concern to the AFP and our law enforcement and National security partners. The AFP takes all extremist groups seriously, targeting criminals and criminal activity, not ideologies or backgrounds," a spokeswoman said.

On its website, the National Socialist Network said it would never use or advocate violence or terrorism to further their movement.
