West cited 'fake news' to justify bombing Syria, MEP tells RT after confronting 'compromised' OPCW chief over Douma report
MEP Mick Wallace has made no apologies for grilling OPCW Director-General Fernando Arias during a parliamentary session, telling RT that Arias seemed to be using the organization to back the West's interventionist agenda in Syria.
Arias addressed the European Parliament Subcommittee of Security and Defence on Thursday, an occasion that Wallace used to put some tough questions to the chief of the UN chemical weapons watchdog.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has repeatedly suggested that President Bashar Assad has deployed chemical weapons on his own people, allegations that have been used by the US and some of its Western allies to launch airstrikes against Syria. But some of the agency's conclusions have come under intense scrutiny in recent months, particularly a report it released concerning an alleged chemical attack in Douma, near Damascus, in 2018. Whistleblower testimony and internal documents suggest that the OPCW may have suppressed key information that contradicted a predetermined conclusion regarding who was responsible for the incident.
Wallace called on Arias to fully investigate the allegations in a "transparent" manner, a request which did not sit well with subcommittee chairwoman Nathalie Loiseau, who accused the Ireland South MEP of spreading "fake news."

'brutal' Brexit is the best option for the British people then….
"Prime Minister Theresa May's deal offers the best solution on Brexit, said French European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau on Tuesday. The statement comes ahead of a crucial vote in the British Parliament on May's proposal, Reuters reports. "The withdrawal agreement that Theresa May is putting before the House of Commons is the best solution for Brexit. The European Union has brought over all the necessary clarifications," Loiseau wrote on Twitter. "The choice is now with the United Kingdom: a smooth exit or a brutal separation," Loiseau added."

EU Officials Pledge to Bolster Cyber Defenses As More Nations Call for Unified Stance on Huawei
BRUSSELS-Amid new calls for a continent-wide response to state-sponsored digital security threats, senior figures in Brussels have vowed to beef up Europe's cyber defenses in a coded warning to Chinese telecom giant Huawei. The European Union's Security Commissioner, Julian King, said regulators wouldn't "walk away" from the challenge and insisted it was "entirely legitimate" for the bloc to take action to defend itself.
Hungary meanwhile, often considered the black sheep of the club, called for an "all European" diplomatic response to China over the deepening security scandal and warned the continent is now "lagging behind" on technology. The remarks came after Beijing's envoy to Brussels, Ambassador Zhang Ming, accused the EU of "slander" and "discrimination" and said it had "fabricated a security story" in an interview with the Financial Times. French European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau also said on Jan. 28 that Europe needs to take a unified stance on Huawei. "Talking to China, we can't do it each state on its own. ... we should act as Europe," Loiseau said.
On Jan. 28, U.S. prosecutors announced 23 new charges against Huawei, with 13 of the charges also targeting the company's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou. Charges include bank fraud, obstruction of justice, and theft of technology. The emerging details have jangled nerves in Europe, but so far the bloc's response has been disjointed. France, Germany, and the UK have all issued statements expressing concern but other states are said to be afraid of offending Beijing. Germany has separately said it is now actively considering banning Huawei from providing 5G technology in the country over security fears, prompting a furious response from the company.
Asked about the arrest of Meng, King said while he doesn't want to comment on individual cases, the issue of "digital resilience" is very important, he said. "It's an entirely legitimate European concern to try and take measures to reinforce our digital resilience because, after all, that digital resilience is crucial for protecting the business of our governments, industrial research, intellectual property, business plans, our elections, democratic institutions, as well as our own personal data," King said. "We're not going to walk away from this issue."

France warns Italy over supporting yellow vest movement
Tensions increased between Paris and Rome this Tuesday as Italy showed support for the yellow vest movement.
Luigi Di Maio, Deputy Premier and Labour and Industry Minister said "Macron compared our government to leprosy!" in response to being told to "butt out" by the Minister of French European Affairs, Nathalie Loiseau.
Both Di Maio and Matteo Salvini, have given their backing to the yellow vest movement with Di Maio saying his 5-Star Movement (M5S) was 'ready to provide support to the Yellow Vests', and later responding to Loiseau "Maybe she is forgetting that her president, (Emmanuel) Macron), compared us to leprosy when talking about our government."
Loiseau responded by saying the French government would raise the issue with Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi.
"We speak often, about many things, we'll talk about this too. The priority of every government is to take care of the well-being of its citizens, so I think that the well-being of the Italian people is the priority of the Italian government. I don't think dealing with the yellow vests has anything to do with the well-being of the Italian people".
A spokesperson for Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker gave support to the French Government saying, "The European Commission supports President Macron and the French authorities, who have our confidence to put into practice the programme the president was elected on"

France Takes Steps To Replace U.S. Forces In Northeastern Syria
France will keep its forces in Syria, despite the U.S. decision to pull its troops out of the war torn country, France's European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau said on December 20.
"For now, of course we are staying in Syria because the fight against Islamic State is essential," Hurriyet Daily News quoted the French minister as saying on the CNews TV.
Following Loiseau's announcement, France's defense minister said that ISIS has not been defeated yet. The statement appears to be a response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed a day earlier that the terrorist group was defeated.
"ISIS has been weakened more than ever, but it has not been wiped from the map nor has its roots. It is necessary that the last pockets of this terrorist organization be definitively defeated militarily," defense minister, Florence Parly, said on Twitter.
Paris, which was reportedly surprised by the U.S. decision, will try to "ensure the security" of the Syrian Kurds who fought with the US-led coalition against ISIS, according to Agnes Von der Muhll, a spokesman for France's Foreign Affairs Ministry.
"The United States must take the protection of the populations of northeastern Syria and the stability of this area into consideration in order to avoid any further humanitarian tragedies and any return by the terrorists," the Washington Examiner quoted the French diplomat as saying.
The France-Press Agency (AFP) said that two senior commanders of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Riad Darar and Ilham Ahmed, will visit Paris on December 21 and hold talks on the U.S. withdrawal from Syria.
Local observers believe that France is trying to take advantage of the situation and replace U.S. forces in northeastern Syria. A task that Paris will likely fail to achieve on its own due to the complexity of the situation in Syria.
