Contradictory Reports on Flydubai Flight to Israel Leave More Questions Than Answers
A flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv descended thousands of feet in seconds on September 30, after a violent confrontation erupted in the cockpit and one pilot was stabbed. The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely in Saudi Arabia, but less than a day later, the central questions surrounding the incident remained unresolved even as Israeli leaders had already attached a motive to it.
Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers when it suddenly lost nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, according to Reuters.
The aircraft transmitted emergency and unlawful-interference signals before diverting to Tabuk, where both pilots were taken to hospital. Passengers and crew then subdued the attacker, allowing other flydubai crew members aboard the aircraft to take control and land it safely.
That sequence is among the few parts of the story that have remained broadly consistent. Almost everything around it has been less certain.
Early reports circulated by Israeli media described a fight involving Russian and Ukrainian pilots. Russia's consulate in Dubai later said there was no Russian pilot on the flight and that the reports were false.
Other early accounts identified the captain as Emirati or Saudi. Those versions were superseded when Indian authorities and Reuters identified the wounded captain as Smit Machchhar, an Indian national.
The same pattern appeared in accounts of who actually flew the aircraft after the cockpit confrontation. Some reports initially said two off-duty pilots traveling as passengers had landed the plane.
Flydubai's own statement said the aircraft was brought under control by its on-duty crew, while other reporting described additional flydubai pilots already aboard. The airline has not publicly provided a detailed account of which individual pilots were at the controls during the emergency landing.
There is greater agreement over what happened inside the cockpit. Israeli authorities say the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar and attempted to crash the aircraft.
Passengers reported hearing a struggle and then seeing blood in the cockpit. Machchhar was able to open the cockpit door despite his injuries, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and overpower the attacker.
But even that account still leaves a critical distinction unresolved: whether the attacker deliberately sought to destroy the aircraft and whether that act had a political or ideological motive.
Flydubai has explicitly warned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed, saying the reasons and motives remain unknown.
The United Arab Emirates' General Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the causes and circumstances, while Saudi authorities are questioning the detained co-pilot. Israel's security agencies are also involved, but Reuters reported on October 1 that no motive or terrorist connection had been established.
That caution contrasts sharply with the language adopted by Israel's political leadership within hours. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot had apparently tried to crash the plane after stabbing the other.
Defense Minister Israel Katz went further, calling the incident an "attempted jihadist terrorist attack" and saying preliminary information indicated that the attacker intended to kill everyone aboard. Katz did not publicly identify the evidence supporting that conclusion.
The timing matters without necessarily establishing a connection. One day before the flight incident, Netanyahu had warned that Israel's enemies might attempt attacks ahead of the country's October 27 election.
The warning itself had already become a political controversy, with opposition figures demanding more information and questioning whether such warnings could be used for political advantage.
The identity reportedly given to the attacker created another unresolved problem. Israeli media identified him as an Omani national, while Israel has no diplomatic relations with Oman.
Transport Minister Miri Regev subsequently called for an investigation into whether the UAE had violated aviation arrangements governing which foreign pilots may operate flights into Israel. That identification raised an obvious question: how could an Omani national have served as a pilot on an Israel-bound flight if the restrictions were interpreted as Israeli officials described them?

Regev orders flydubai flights to Israel halted over hijacking pilot's Omani background, sources say
Flydubai's agreement to operate in Israel explicitly states that all pilots must be from countries that have normalized relations with Israel, which does not include Oman.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev on Wednesday has requested that the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) halt all flights by the airline flydubai entering and exiting the country following the suspected attempted hijacking of a commercial passenger aircraft flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv, a source in the ministry confirmed to The Jerusalem Post.
According to the source, Regev's decision was made after unverified reports indicating that the co-pilot suspected of hijacking the plane may have been of Omani origin. Israeli sources later corroborated to the Post that the suspected hijacker is believed to be of Omani nationality, according to initial investigations.

WATCH: Rescue flight arrives in Israel with all passengers from earlier flydubai hijacking attempt
The Mossad and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) approved the flydubai rescue flight's crew earlier on Wednesday.
A rescue flight carrying passengers from flydubai flight FZ1073 landed at Ben-Gurion Airport on Wednesday after taking off from Saudi Arabia's Tabuk Airport, with the Saudi airport saying that all passengers from the original flight involved in an earlier hijacking attempt had boarded the rescue flight.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to arrive at Ben-Gurion Airport to welcome the passengers, with a Magen David Adom spokesperson noting that its teams are on standby alongside airport medical teams, ready to conduct medical screenings of the arriving passengers and provide care if needed.

Flydubai pilot attempts terror hijacking of flight to Tel Aviv, foiled by Israeli passengers
Israeli official says "major disaster avoided" after pilot stabbed his co-pilot, attempted to hijack aircraft with over 100 Israeli passengers - Plane makes emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
A flydubai commercial passenger aircraft flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv diverted to and landed in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday morning after what Israeli officials said was an attempted hijacking by one of the pilots that led to a mid-air altercation.
An Israeli official told The Jerusalem Post a "major disaster was narrowly avoided" amid growing fears that one of the pilots attempted to hijack the plane with the intention of crashing it into the ground. Additional flight crew, aided by Israelis on board the flight, managed to subdue the pilot and bring him under control, the official told the Post.

Hamas, PIJ, Mohammed Dahlan form electoral coalition despite Hamas pledge to cede Gaza rule
PIJ Deputy Secretary General Mohammed al-Hindi claimed the terrorist organization would support "a unified national list" made up of independent figures rather than members of the groups.
Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the exiled leader of Fatah's Democratic Reform Current, Mohammed Dahlan, have formed an electoral alliance to run in the Palestinian Legislative Council elections in November, PIJ Deputy Secretary General Mohammed al-Hindi confirmed to the Associated Press.
The confirmation comes weeks after Dimitri Dilliani, a spokesperson for Dahlan, told The Jerusalem Post that the UAE-based Palestinian politician was working to unify the factions ahead of the elections.
Al-Hindi claimed the terrorist organization would support "a unified national list" made up of independent figures rather than members of the groups. The PIJ has not historically participated in elections run by the Palestinian Authority, but Al-Hindi claimed the group would "support a national list that is agreed upon."

US continues withdrawing tanker aircraft from Israel's Ben Gurion airport: Israeli media
Channel 12 says number of US aerial refueling aircraft at airport is nearing levels seen during previous ceasefire
The number of US aerial refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel has declined, nearing levels seen during a previous ceasefire, Israeli Channel 12 reported Monday.
"The Americans continue to reduce the number of refueling aircraft at Ben Gurion Airport" near Tel Aviv, the broadcaster said.
The number of tanker aircraft had "already approached" levels seen during the ceasefire, when about 20 such aircraft were stationed at the airport, it added.
The channel did not provide the number of aircraft at the height of tensions.
The report comes as reports have circulated in recent days that the US and Iran could be nearing an agreement on outstanding issues, particularly navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies and trade.
US aircraft have been stopping at Ben Gurion for aerial refueling since the US-Israeli war on Iran began Feb. 28.
Channel 12 reported Sunday that the US Air Force "had begun withdrawing some of its refueling aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport amid security developments."
The move came after Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev pressed security officials to remove the tanker aircraft to maintain normal airport operations during peak travel days, the channel added.
According to the channel, more than 2.6 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport in August, averaging about 100,000 passengers a day, making it the busiest month since Oct. 7, 2023, as August is a popular vacation period for Israelis.
There was no immediate comment from Washington or Tel Aviv on the report.
Israel has previously debated the impact of US tanker aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion on civilian flight operations.
On July 14, Israel barred additional US aerial refueling aircraft from landing at Ben Gurion after their number reached 33. Regev said the aircraft were occupying spaces needed for civilian planes.
The US Central Command, or CENTCOM, objected to the decision the same day. Israel reversed the decision on July 15 following US protests.

Netanyahu, Katz said to quietly okay reconstruction in IDF-controlled part of Gaza
Army Radio says premier approved rebuilding effort two weeks ago without telling public, despite Hamas remaining armed; PM's office says it's a UAE-backed temporary housing project
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have quietly given the go-ahead for rehabilitation work to begin in southern Gaza, despite vowing that reconstruction of the badly damaged Strip would only take place once the Hamas terror group was disarmed, Army Radio reported Sunday.
The reconstruction work, which involves building infrastructure for the establishment of residential housing, is taking place in an area of eastern Rafah under Israel Defense Forces control, but near the Yellow Line that forms the frontier with Hamas.
According to the report, Netanyahu and Katz gave the green light two weeks ago, albeit without announcing the move, as the International Stabilization Force set to take control of parts of Gaza readied to deploy.
The report said that Gaza contractors and laborers will carry out the work after undergoing security checks.
In response, the Prime Minister's Office said the work began months ago, as part of an Emirati-backed project for temporary housing "free of Hamas rule."
"As of now, the area has been cleared of terror infrastructure and tunnels," Netanyahu's office told Army Radio.
The PMO also said electric, sewer and water infrastructure work will not be performed by Gazans, and will be under IDF supervision.
In January, Netanyahu insisted that reconstruction in Gaza would be allowed only if Hamas first gave up its weapons, something it has refused to do thus far, though a recent US-proffered agreement, rejected by Israel, appeared to pave the way toward disarming the group.
"I am already hearing the statements that we will allow Gaza's reconstruction before demilitarization," he said at the time. "That will not happen."
Responding to the report, Transportation Minister Miri Regev told the station that rebuilding work can begin in any area of Gaza not under Hamas control.

When are we going to ever learn that Israel is our enemy and not a partner at all. They do this, to put our troops at risk of being shot down by having less assets in the air. By doing this they are trying to foster another mass rescue operation in hopes that it turns out to cause a full ground invasion. Think. Israel was doing air strikes for about 3 days until they started operations with their Hezbollah friends, thereby giving them an excuse to not participate in any ground operations because they were depleted of resources according to their own resources. They eventually showed their true intentions after the ceasefire by attacking Christian communities near their border. When will you learn? They did 911, and came up with the toxic vaccine genocide plan with big pharma, the Chinese Wuhan bioweapon R&D, and production in Ukraine. I revealed all this 7 years ago, are you surprised that they do this? Then you haven't really considered all that I told you.

Transportation minister says Israel aiming to fully reopen airspace, several foreign airlines ask to resume flights
Transportation Minister Miri Regev says Israel is advancing a plan to fully open its airspace by increasing the number of flights, extending airport operating hours, and bringing back foreign carriers.
"I have instructed the Israel Airports Authority to prepare for the final phase of the safe return operation," says Regev. "The plan will be implemented subject to two conditions: lifting of Home Front Command restrictions and coordination with security and intelligence agencies."
"Today, 24 flights will land at Ben Gurion Airport, and 9 flights in Haifa, while this morning, a Mano cruise arrived with 1,900 Israelis," Regev says.
From the beginning of the safe return operation until the end of today, more than 100,000 Israelis out of an estimated 150,000 will have returned home, and about 70,000 passengers will have departed, according to Regev.
Looking ahead, Regev encourages the public to prepare and make plans for the summer months.
"Those who planned flights for June, July and August can continue to prepare and enjoy their vacation - Israeli citizens can leave the country and return safely," Regev emphasizes. "I call on Israeli carriers to act fairly, set reasonable prices and be alert to the plight of Israeli passengers."
Regev says that a number of foreign airlines have already applied to resume their flight operations to Israel, including flydubai, Etihad Airways, Blue Bird, TUS Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines.
"We will also speak to additional foreign airlines," said Regev. "However, many foreign carriers have already scheduled summer flight routes in advance, so at this stage we will rely mainly on the Israeli fleet of aircraft."

Israel embarks on plan to bring more than 100,000 Israelis stuck abroad safely home
El Al opens registration for stranded passengers to map return flights; Arkia creates flight schedule for Israelis to return from Athens, Larnaca, Rome, Paris and New York
Israel is gearing up to start operating special flight schedules to help bring home more than 100,000 of its citizens stranded abroad since the outbreak of intense hostilities with Iran early Friday.
El Al opened an online registration procedure for repatriation flights for its customers whose flights were canceled and have been stranded abroad since the closure of Israeli airspace early on Friday. Within less than two hours of opening the online form, more than 60,000 stranded passengers registered on the airline's site, El Al said.
"At this time, El Al is formulating the list of destinations and the scope of flights that will be allowed to operate under this plan," the company said. "The purpose of the registration is to map the location of our customers in the world, and accordingly build a flight schedule."
"We emphasize that the order of registration on the site is not important since customers' priority will be determined by their original flight date...and registration does not confirm flight placement," the airline added.
The move came after Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced a national operation plan to safely return Israelis stuck abroad, while cautioning that it will take time. According to estimates and subject to the security situation, repatriation flights for Israelis stranded abroad won't be launched before Thursday.

Houthi rebels threaten 'aerial blockade' on Israel; flights canceled en masse
Around 20 foreign airlines have paused flights to Israel, Transport Ministry says; Minister Regev warns Israeli carriers not to raise prices and urges stranded Israelis to contact Foreign Ministry's emergency center for assistance
Transportation Minister Miri Regev said Sunday evening that the government is working "around the clock" with foreign airlines and aviation authorities to restore international flight service, after a Houthi missile launched from Yemen landed near Ben Gurion Airport and triggered a wave of flight cancellations.
According to the ministry, around 30 foreign carriers are still operating normally at Ben Gurion alongside Israel's three domestic airlines. However, about 20 airlines have suspended service temporarily for up to 72 hours, following dramatic footage of the missile explosion and heightened security concerns.
The list of suspended carriers includes Ryanair and Delta, which canceled flights through Monday; Wizz Air, Air India, Iberia and the Lufthansa Group (including Swiss and Brussels Airlines), which paused flights until Tuesday; and British Airways and Italy's ITA, which suspended all flights through Wednesday. United Airlines halted flights until Friday and is reviewing the situation. Air Europa, Air France and Austrian Airlines also canceled select flights on Sunday.
Regev confirmed the missile fell in a field near the airport's parking access road, injuring several people and causing panic. Ben Gurion resumed full operations within 30 minutes, she said, adding that Israeli aviation authorities are in ongoing contact with global counterparts to bring airlines back.

Netanyahu Says Israel Is 'Nation-State Of The Jewish People And Them Alone'
MARCH 11, 2019 4:18 PM ET
https://www.npr.org/2019/03/11/702264118/netanyahu-says-israel-is-nation-state-of-the-jewish-people-and-them-alone
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is drawing criticism for saying that Israel is "the national state, not of all its citizens, but only of the Jewish people." The comment prompted many people - including Israel's president and the star of Wonder Woman - to defend Israel's Palestinian Arab minority.
Palestinian Arab citizens are about a fifth of Israel's population and often face discrimination and accusations of disloyalty.
The prime minister's comment set off criticism, debates over Israel's true nature - and observations that with Israel's legislative elections now less than a month away, Netanyahu's provocative language might be calculated to help his Likud Party at the polls.
Netanyahu and his party are warning that if they lose upcoming elections, the new government could include Arab political parties.
The saga began when Israeli actress and TV host Rotem Sela posted an Instagram story about comments that Culture Minister and Likud member Miri Regev made during a news interview. Sela questioned why Regev's statements about what she called the dangers of Palestinian Arab citizens taking part in a governing coalition went unchallenged.
"When the hell will someone in this government tell the public that Israel is a country of all its citizens," Sela wrote.
Much of the dispute that followed played out on Instagram, where Netanyahu responded to Sela, "Dear Rotem, an important correction: Israel is not a state of all its citizens."
Referring to a hotly contested law adopted last year that defines Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people, the prime minister said Arab citizens have equal rights under the law, but that Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people - and only them, Ynet News reported.
Israeli movie star Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman, weighed in, backing Sela and calling her an inspiration.
"Love thy neighbor as yourself. This isn't an issue of right or left. Jew or Arab. Secular or religious," Gadot said on Instagram, according to The Associated Press. "It's an issue of dialogue."
On Monday, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said on Twitter that Israel "has complete equality of rights for all its citizens," adding, "There are no first-class citizens, and there are no second-class voters. We are all equal in the voting booth. We are all represented at the Knesset."
Rivlin did not refer to Netanyahu directly, saying in a tweet, "Recently, when political thinking is turning all reason on its head, we hear entirely unacceptable remarks about the Arab citizens of Israel."
For political observers in Israel, the story has echoes of 2015, when Netanyahu posted a last-minute video on the day of a national election, claiming (falsely, it turned out) that right-wing rule of Israel was in danger because large numbers of Arab voters were heading to the polls in buses provided by left-wing groups. The tactic was widely criticized - but it was also credited with helping to sway the election result.
During this election season, Netanyahu's camp has circulated the phrase, "It is either Bibi or Tibi" - using the prime minister's nickname and referring to rival Ahmed Tibi, a Knesset member since 1999 and leader of Ta'al, also called the Arab Movement For Change party. But Netanyahu's actual rival for the prime minister's chair is the Blue and White Party's Benny Gantz.
Earlier this month, the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in which it "called on Israeli political leaders across the spectrum to stop delegitimizing Israeli Arab political parties and vilifying the Arab minority population of Israel."
In that statement, Carole Nuriel, the director of ADL's Israel office, said recent incidents of politicians using anti-Arab rhetoric were "a deeply troubling trend that, if it continues, could undermine Israel's vibrant democracy."
This is not the first public dispute between Netanyahu and Rivlin, two former allies in Likud.
Rivlin was an early critic of the Jewish nation-state measure, saying shortly after his election in 2014 that it risked separating the concepts of Israel as being both democratic and Jewish.
In 2015, Rivlin also criticized Netanyahu for his behavior toward then-U.S. President Barack Obama. The prime minister had clashed with Obama over the Iran nuclear deal and angered him by visiting Washington to deliver a controversial speech to a Republican-led Congress.

Israeli Cabinet Meeting Erupts In Anger Over Plan For Army To Probe Oct.7 Mistakes
An Israeli diplomatic-security cabinet meeting which took place on Thursday evening came to an abrupt end when a row broke out, according to Israeli media. The cabinet meeting was held to discuss the future of the Gaza Strip after Israel's war on the besieged enclave ends. However, lawmakers clashed with the chief of staff and the defense establishment over an investigation into the mistakes and conduct of Israeli soldiers around the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel.
Lawmakers said that the probe, which was set to look into failure to prepare for the attack, was promised to start immediately after the war on Gaza ended. Reports in Israeli media stated that the meeting lasted for three and a half hours, before "exploding".
Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and Transport Minister Miri Regev were among those involved in the intense discussions.
Regev said the decision over the probe had been made without lawmakers' knowledge, arguing that the army should be fully focused on combat at the moment.
Row over Gaza future
The discussion on what should happen following the war on Gaza has revealed deep ideological divides within the coalition, with Ben Gvir and Smotrich reiterating their belief in the meeting that Palestinians in Gaza should be permanently displaced and replaced with Israeli settlers.
Another point of contention during the meeting was the announcement that the investigation is set to include former defense minister, Shaul Mofaz. The decision stirred discontent with far-right politicians, due to his involvement in Israel's unilateral withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 and being a key figure in security coordination with the Palestinian Authority.
A minister told Hebrew outlet Kan News that the discussions were "despicable" and that the army was attacked, causing "some senior members of the defense establishment to leave in the middle."
There was also conflict over whether a full team had been appointed to carry the investigation out, to which there was no clear answer given. Ben Gvir reportedly defended his right to question the chief of staff, saying "not all criticism is blasphemy, we are the ministers and this is our job."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu eventually cut off all discussion, ending the meeting and saying that it would continue another time.

Israel's national airline can't find pilots for PM's trip - media
El Al has reportedly been unable to find any volunteers to staff Benjamin Netanyahu's flight to Rome amid judicial reform protests
Israel's government has reportedly looked to find another airline to fly Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Rome after the country's national air carrier, El Al, was unable to find any pilots or flight attendants to staff this week's state visit to Italy.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev intends to open up bidding to other airlines, such as Arkia and Israir, after El Al missed a 2pm Sunday deadline to confirm Thursday's flight, according to Israeli media outlets. The national carrier couldn't find any pilots or cabin crew members to volunteer for the mission amid massive protests in the country over the ruling coalition's proposed judicial reforms, the Jerusalem Post said.
El Al blamed the staffing issue on a shortage of pilots who are qualified to fly a Boeing 777, the aircraft requested by the prime minister, "among other reasons." Media reports suggested that airline employees were unwilling to volunteer because of opposition to the government's planned judicial overhaul.
Netanyahu is scheduled to fly on Thursday to Rome, where he will meet with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and return to Israel on Saturday. Meloni was quick to congratulate Netanyahu when he won a majority in Israel's election last November, returning to power as PM after an 18-month absence. He reportedly plans to follow up his Italy trip with a visit to Germany next week.
All but three of the 40 reserve pilots in the Israeli Air Force's 69th fighter squadron announced on Sunday that they won't attend a scheduled training session on Wednesday, in protest against the proposed judicial reforms.
Protests against the plan have dragged on all year. Netanyahu said on Sunday that the demonstration's organizer is a "dangerous group" that only wants to "burn down the house and create chaos in the country."
El Al, which is dependent on loans and financing guarantees from the government, could face punitive measures over its failure to staff Netanyahu's trip, Regev told public broadcaster Kan. The airline said later on Sunday that it "proudly carries the Israeli flag" and will handle Netanyahu's flight as scheduled, but the Jerusalem Post claimed it still hadn't found a co-pilot or cabin crew.

Australia reverses recognition of West Jerusalem as Israel's capital
Australia's announcement comes exactly two weeks before Israel is set to hold elections.
Australia's Foreign Ministry announced Tuesday it is reversing the policy of the country's former conservative prime minister by no longer recognizing West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
"Jerusalem is a final status issue that should be resolved as part of any peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people," Foreign Minister Penny Wong said. "Australia's embassy has always been, and remains, in Tel Aviv."
Australia recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel under conservative Prime Minister Scott Morrison in 2018, just months after former U.S. President Donald Trump relocated the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
"In light of the way in which this decision was made in Australia, as a hasty response to an incorrect report in the media, we can only hope that the Australian government manages other matters more seriously and professionally," Israeli Interim Prime Minister Yair Lapid said.
Australia's announcement comes exactly two weeks before Israel is set to hold elections. Israeli politicians, such as former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, slammed Lapid after Australia's announcement.
"Is it any wonder that Australia canceled its decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, when … Lapid says that he wants to establish a Palestinian state?" Netanyahu wrote on Twitter, as translated.
Other members of Netanyahu's Likud party such as Miri Regev and Yoav Kisch are pointing to Australia's decision to criticize Lapid's leadership.

Illegal immigration
In May 2012, at a demonstration against illegal immigrants in Tel Aviv, Regev said that "Sudanese infiltrators are a cancer in the nation's body". She later said that the quote was misrepresented, and, while justifying the comparison, apologized for seeming to compare human beings to cancer.
LGBT rights
Regev met with LGBT community members of her party, and said (in parallel to social activism), that "not only the left can support and embrace the gay community".

Israel and Jordan sign historic airspace agreement
The deal allows flights crossing over one country to also fly over the other.
Israel and Jordan reached an agreement allowing flights to cross over both countries' airspace, the Transportation Ministry announced on Thursday.
The deal allows flights crossing over one country to also fly over the other.
The agreement will significantly shorten the length of flights from Israel to the Gulf and East Asia, cutting the time it takes to travel between countries and cutting gas costs and pollution.
It will also allow the UAE and Bahrain, which recently made peace with Israel, along with other countries in the region, to fly over Israeli airspace.
Jerusalem and Amman reached the deal after several years, but peace between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia allowing Israeli flights to the UAE over its airspace hastened the process.
The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, known as EUROCONTROL, played a major part in negotiating the agreement.
Transportation Minister Miri Regev said "we are once again breaking new boundaries, and this time it is in the air.
"Thanks to this agreement, Israel is better integrated into the region," she added. "We are opening new routes for cooperation in transportation, economics and diplomacy with the states sharing borders and shared interests with us, and a partnership in the vision for regional peace."

Israel restricts outgoing flights as Netanyahu govt bolsters 2nd coronavirus lockdown
The Israeli government slapped restrictions on outgoing flights on Friday as part of its measures to bolster a second Covid-19 lockdown, imposed last week amid a resurgence in coronavirus cases.
The new rule "enables leaving the country for whoever bought an airplane ticket prior to the beginning of quarantine entry, i.e. today at 1400," Transport Minister Miri Regev explained in a Facebook post. "The flight ticket buyers beyond this date will not be able to redeem them." Israelis can return though, "without limitations," the minister said, adding that a 14-day quarantine will be imposed on people arriving from "red countries" which are registering high coronavirus rates.
Israel tightened its second lockdown - which was imposed on September 18 - on Friday, and will close workplaces, shutter markets and further limit prayers. Authorities had already closed schools and imposed restrictions on work and leisure.
Synagogues will now be closed except on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which begins on Sunday afternoon, but the numbers of worshippers must be limited. Only outdoor prayers attended by a maximum of 20 people will be allowed at other times.
The new measures had yet to be finalized in parliament just hours before they were due to come into force.
The country, with a population of nine million, has the world's highest coronavirus infection rate per capita, according to an AFP tally. Health officials have recorded more than 215,000 coronavirus infections and 1,378 deaths to date - and more than 7,500 new cases were reported on Thursday alone.
According to PM Benjamin Netanyahu, the further restrictions were necessary because Israelis have not complied with social distancing requirements.
"Something needs to be done and it must be done now - a tight lockdown, especially during the holidays, when the economic cost is much lower," he said.
The government had also sought to restrict citizens' protests to within 1km (0.6 miles) of their homes. This would have effectively halted ongoing demonstrations outside Netanyahu's residence over his handling of the pandemic and the economy, as well as over corruption allegations. The PM denies any wrongdoing. However, MPs failed to agree on that protest restriction measure before the tightened lockdown took effect on Friday.

Coronavirus lockdown: Gov't approves three-week closure
Schools to close on Friday * Airport likely not to lockdown * Ministers spar of details of closure
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein and coronavirus commissioner Prof. Ronni Gamzu will address the nation on Sunday night after an hours-long cabinet meeting meant to determine the fate of the country over the next two to six weeks.
The decision to impose a three-week closure from Rosh Hashanah through Sukkot was approved by the government after a meeting that lasted more than seven hours. The closure passed despite many ministers expressing opposition to the plan the the coronavirus cabinet passed last week to help stop the spread of the novel virus.
The lockdown is expected to start at 2 p.m. on Friday.
The plan was originally to start the lockdown at 6 a.m., but ministers pushed back that people needed more time to prepare for the holiday.
"I will vote in favor of the closure with a full heart," Interior Minister Arye Deri said, "but we need to start the closure not at 6 a.m. on Friday, but later, to give people more time to prepare on the eve of the holiday."
The government also approved that schools will continue to operate through Friday, the eve of Rosh Hashanah. The original plan called for the education system to cease operating on Wednesday.
Netanyahu said that the school system will remained close for at least two weeks and then the government will consider opening up preschools and elementary schools, depending on the rate of infection.
The public will not be allowed to venture more than 500 meters from home and stores, restaurants and all places for recreation and leisure activities will be closed.
It is expected that private places of work will be allowed to continue operating, while an outline for the public sector will be established in the coming days.
It was expected that there would not be a final decision about closing down Ben-Gurion Airport on Sunday and that this decision would be pushed off. According to N12, the airport is likely to be excluded from the lockdown, but a decision will only be finalized after a small committee headed by Transportation Minister Miri Regev meets on Monday.
Finally, grocery stores, pharmacies and other essential providers will be allowed to operate.

Gantz walks out of meeting with Netanyahu after Regev calls him 'half-baked'
Likud minister recycled campaign claim that Iran may have hacked Blue and White leader's phone and that he should release any compromising recordings
In one of the first of likely many spats between Likud and Blue and White lawmakers in their new coalition, Defense Minister Benny Gantz cut his Wednesday meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu short after learning of an interview given by Miri Regev in which the Likud transportation minister called Gantz "half-baked" and said he was not ready to take on the role of prime minister.
"I think he is not ready to be prime minister. He is not ready. Let's see what happens over the next year and a half. We'll see if he learns from the best and comes ready for the job," Regev said in an excerpt from an interview with Yedioth Ahronoth that the daily released ahead of its Thursday publishing. The comments drew a rebuke from Netanyahu.
According to the Blue and White-Likud coalition agreement, Gantz will replace Netanyahu as prime minister after 18 months, in November 2021, at which point Regev is slated to become foreign minister.
The outspoken Regev went on to recycle a claim that was frequently used during Likud's three grueling election campaigns against Gantz's Blue and White party, saying he should release any compromising recordings he might have in order to demonstrate to the public that he cannot be blackmailed by Iran, which reportedly hacked his phone.
"If there really is such a tape and it exists, you should ask the defense minister, Benny Gantz, if we have anything to worry about," Regev said.
Shortly after Yedioth published the interview excerpts as well as recordings in which Regev can be heard making them, the Likud party issued a statement implicitly disavowing the remarks while not censuring the minister by name.

Protests against Netanyahu to take place across Israel
The Black Flag movement is planning on having dozens of buses and a chain of cars surround Netanyahu's official residence with the slogan "the man indicted for corruption is not my prime minister."
Demonstrations will take place all over the country on Sunday, protesting the beginning of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial, as well as the formation of an Alternate Prime Minister's Office for Blue and White leader Benny Gantz at Sunday morning's cabinet meeting.
The opposition Yesh Atid party will organize protests at dozens of junctions across the country under the banner: "Corrupt and Disconnected - We are sick of you."
The Black flag movement is planning on having dozens of busses and a chain of cars surround Netanyahu's official residence with the slogan "The man indicted for corruption is not my prime minister."
"It will be a sad day for the State of Israel," Labor MK Merav Michaeli said. "The prime minister of Israel will stand trial for harsh crimes of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. Instead of quitting, Netanyahu is dragging the country down with him, destroying our legal institutions along the way and encouraging harm to anyone who dealt with his cases."
Michaeli said she blamed the leaders of her own political camp for not doing enough to ensure that Netanyahu would be replaced, and added that she would come to court as a private citizen.
"This makes it a double tragedy," she said.
A coalition of groups on both sides of the political map will hold demonstrations outside the Jerusalem District Court, supporting and opposing Netanyahu.
Several ministers and MKs will join Netanyahu at the court, including Likud ministers Amir Ohana, Miri Regev and Tzachi Hanegbi.

Likud ups attacks on legal establishment ahead of trial
Anti-Netanyahu groups plan "guerrilla activities" near court
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's closest allies in Likud and his family escalated their criticism of the legal establishment on Thursday, ahead of the opening of Netanyahu's trial on Sunday.
Netanyahu shared an article on his Facebook page with the headline "Netanyahu has no chance of receiving a fair trial."
His son Yair Netanyahu referred to his father's legal proceedings as a "show trial" in which the judges have already determined the defendant's guilt, and compared the prime minister to wrongly convicted French-Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus. Yair called Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit, who indicted his father "a criminal!!!!"
Likud Cyber Minister David Amsalem also referred to Mandelblit as a criminal in an Army Radio interview and said a previous attorney-general had seen Mandelblit as "immoral and abnormal."
New Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn responded to the continuous attacks on Mandelblit by reiterating that he has full faith in the attorney-general and saying "ministers in the government are permitted to express substantive criticism, but unrestrained attacks cross a redline."
Transportation Minister Miri Regev announced she would come to the court on Sunday to "show support for Netanyahu and his wife." Her associates said she "was not coming to protest," that she would respect the court and that she was sure the judges would find Netanyahu innocent.
Likud faction chairman Miki Zohar said attacking the legal establishment would not be his party's strategy.
"We trust and hope that with God's help, justice will come to light," he said.

Israel's Eurovision chief: Madonna slipped Israeli, Palestinian flags into show
Meital Cohen says organizers did not notice pop stars' backup dancers wore political symbols banned by contest; Culture Minister Regev condemns 'inappropriate' display
The Israeli director of the Eurovision Song Contest on Sunday said organizers did not notice that dancers accompanying pop star Madonna during the competition final bore Israeli and Palestinian flags, which they controversially displayed to the audience while on stage.
Madonna drew criticism over the incident, which violated Eurovision's strict guidelines against any form of political display during the show.
"Madonna went up with her two dancers without us seeing the flags," Meital Cohen told Army Radio a day after the final was held Saturday night in Tel Aviv. "We cut away from it quite fast, there were some crazy things that evening."
The singer, 60, wasn't the only one to brandish Palestinian symbols. At one point, members of Icelandic band Hatari waved scarves bearing the Palestinian flag at the camera as they waited to hear the scores awarded for their song.
ulture and Sport Minister Miri Regev slammed the political protests.
"I think you shouldn't involve politics in a cultural or musical event like this. I think it was a mistake and inappropriate, and with all due respect to Madonna things like that shouldn't happen," Regev told reporters as she headed to the weekly cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister's Office in Jerusalem.
Regev congratulated producers at the Kan public broadcasting corporation for the show, but held the broadcaster responsible for the flag incidents.
"You can't ignore that there were Palestinian flags at an event of a public body, from the public budget," she said. "It would not happen in any other country. There is a certain feeling that in our country everything is permitted and the government can't become involved or oversee [this]."
Regev also lamented that video clips screened during Eurovision, showing off Israeli landscapes, did not include any footage from the West Bank.
"Judea and Samaria are not part of our country in the view of the [Kan] Corporation," she said using the biblical names for the West Bank. "So why are we surprised by the Palestinian flags?"
Israel won the right to host the annual song contest after Israel singer Netta Barzilai took home the top prize last year.
Madonna, performing during the Grande Finale of the Eurovision, injected politics into her act with a call for peace in the lyrics of her new song "Future," which featured two of her dancers wearing Israeli and Palestinian flags on their backs.
The flag-wearing pair were the last two dancers to leave the stage at the end of the song, at which point Madonna and co-performer quavo dramatically disappeared from the back of the stage with the message "Wake Up," which also flashed on screen.
Aside from the flag kerfuffle, Madonna drew scorn for the flatness of her voice as she belted out two numbers.
"As well as being off-key and a poor performer, Madonna managed to violate the EBU's principle of non-political engagement by adding the Israeli and Palestinian flags to the back of two dancers backs," tweeted Reuters Paris Bureau chief Luke Baker. "What a waste of money she was."
UK television personality Piers Morgan tweeted "RIP Madonna's career" and Graham Norton, who provided Eurovision commentary for the BBC, noted, "A slightly muted response to Madonna in the hall I would say," the Daily Mail reported.
Madonna's appearance at the show, for which she reportedly charged $1.3 million, had been dogged by controversy. Boycott campaigners called on her not to participate in the event. And even after the singer arrived in Israel for rehearsals last Tuesday there were lingering doubts as to whether she would actually be permitted onstage as she did not sign the contract for her brief performance until Thursday.
Regev had clashed with Kan last year as she sought government involvement in planning the event while organizers pushed back against any politicization of the contest.

Netanyahu aide in leaked recording: 'Hate is what unites our camp'
Natan Eshel heard saying negative campaigning works well with 'non-Ashkenazi' voters and that the 'beast' Miri Regev is particularly effective at it
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's senior aide Natan Eshel said that "hate is what unites" the right-wing camp led by the Likud party and that negative campaigning works well on "non-Ashkenazi voters" in a leaked recording revealed by Channel 12 on Saturday.
Eshel, a former Netanyahu chief of staff who resigned amid allegations of sexual misconduct, continues to work with the premier, leading the previous two coalition negotiations over the past year.
In the newly revealed recording, he can be heard discussing the party's campaign strategy with an unnamed person whom he is trying to recruit as a political adviser, according to the report. In the tape, Eshel says that Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit's decision to indict Netanyahu in three corruption cases actually helped the premier in his campaign. "He went up by 20 percent" Eshel recalls, though it was unclear what numbers he was referring to.
"If you haven't stolen, what exactly have you come [into politics] for? We've checked this. And to my shock, they [the public] do not understand [this notion] of going into politics to do what's good for the nation. You go into politics in order to steal and you need to be a man," Eshel claims, not yet specifying which public he was referring to.
"Now, in this public, I'll call it... non-Ashkenazi...What gets them worked up? Why do they hate the press?... They hate everything and we've succeeded in whipping up that hatred. Hatred is what unites our camp," Eshel says plainly.
Eshel appeared to be referring to the Likud base of voters from Mizrahi communities, often in the periphery, who have long supported the party.

Liberman to Regev: "I only greet humans"
Liberman made the comment when the pair crossed paths in the Channel 13 studios. Regev has denounced it as "offensive and humiliating."
Minister of Culture and Sports Miri Regev, and Yisrael Beyteinu leader Avigdor Liberman had a run-in on Saturday while at the studios of Channel 13.
The confrontation happened just after Liberman finished his interview with "Hamate Hamerkazi" show host Ayila Hason. Regev entered the studio to be interviewed following him.
When Hason told the both of them: "You don't have to say hello to each other," Regev answered that in fact she wished Liberman a good week, but he did not reply. Instead, Liberman answered: "I only greet humans."
In response, Regev posted on Twitter: "I was shocked by Liberman's bold, offensive and humiliating response towards me during the live broadcast with Ayila Hason. I met him tonight in the studio, wished him a good week, and he responded: "I only greet humans".
"Such a sexist and misogynistic response doesn't have a place in conversation between men and women, or anywhere. You can have disagreements, you can criticize, but no one has the right to act this way.
"Liberman has no moral compass and no basic respect between humans and I can't help but condemn such behavior. It would be a shame if this is the man who wants to bring unity to Israel"
Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu also commented on the spat, writing on Twitter: "Liberman's behavior is inhumane and disrespectful. Unlike him, Miri Regev acted with politeness and honor. We are proud of her actions as the minister of culture and sports who broke the left's monopoly on culture and brought culture to the whole of Israel, and promoted Israeli sports around the world."

Netanyahu: Israel to have normal ties and peace deals with Arab countries
Moderate Arab states have publicly insisted that they will only make peace with Israel once a deal has been reached.
Israel will soon have normal ties and formal peace deals with a number of Arab countries, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised on Sunday night as he spoke at a Likud event in Tel Aviv in which he touted his past diplomatic achievements and promised even more successes.
"I intend in the coming years to conclude normalization and peace agreements with a number of Arab countries," Netanyahu said. He recalled in specific his 2018 trip to Oman, a country with which Israel has no formal diplomatic relations.
Israel's informal ties with a number of moderate Arab states have warmed since US President Donald Trump came into office in January 2017, as the US has pushed for normalized relations between Israel and the Arab world. To date Israel has formal peace treaties only with Egypt and Jordan.
Moderate Arab states have publicly insisted that they will only make peace with Israel once a deal has been reached.
But a number of them have allowed ties with Israel to improve, with Foreign Minister Israel Katz and Sports and Culture Minister Miri Regev visiting Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
In 2020 Israel will have a pavilion at the World's Fair in Dubai for six months. An Israeli governmental delegation will be in Dubai for those six months, effectively giving the country de-facto representation in the UAE.
During his speech on Sunday night, Netanyahu said that simultaneously to achieving peace deals with Arab countries, he would annex West Bank settlements with US support.
Netanyahu pledged to achieve an historic military pact with the US that would preserve the IDF's freedom of action in defense of the country.
With regard to Syria, Netanyahu said that Israel was working on a daily basis to prevent Iran from entrenching itself militarily in that country.

'We Will Soon Pray There': Israeli Minister Urges Jewish Settlers to Enter Al-Aqsa (The Temple Mount)
Comments from Miri Regev come days after clashes between Palestinians and Israeli police at the site during tense Jerusalem Day celebrations
An Israeli minister has called on settlers to continue entering Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa compound and thanked security officials for making their visits possible after hundreds broke into the mosque during the final days of Ramadan.
In a video released on Monday, Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev said:
"We should do everything to keep ascending to the Temple Mount [the name used by Jews for Al-Aqsa]."
"And hopefully soon, we will pray in the Temple Mount, our sacred place," she added.
Regev also thanked Gilad Erdan, Israel's Interior Security Minister, and Jerusalem's Police Chief for their "fight and contribution for Jews to ascend to the Temple Mount".
Regev's comments come days after Palestinians and Israeli police clashed at the compound. On Sunday, tensions ratcheted up in the city with Israel's Jerusalem Day - a celebration of the country's capture and occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967 - coinciding with the last days of Ramadan.
As Israelis planned to march through the Old City, including the Muslim Quarter, to observe the holiday, Palestinians were urged to occupy the Al-Aqsa compound, an act of defiance against Jewish Israelis that were expected to enter the holy site.
In response to Palestinians rallying in Al-Aqsa, Israeli police - who reportedly allowed the settlers to enter the site - raided the mosque.

Israel gets first gay minister: Ohana appointed interim justice minister
The move comes just one day ahead of Thursday's LGBTQ Pride parade in Jerusalem.
Amir Ohana will be Israel's first gay minister ever after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided to appoint him interim justice minister.
The move comes ahead of Thursday's gay pride parade in Jerusalem. The official Prime Minister's Office statement announcing the appointment emphasized Ohana's professional qualifications as "a lawyer who is very familiar with the legal system," his law degree and his apprenticeship in the State's Attorney's Office Tel Aviv district. The statement said Ohana has appeared before courts across the country and sponsored key legislation in the Knesset, including the Nation-State Law.
But Netanyahu's spokesman Yonatan Urich singled out only the history Netanyahu was making in the appointment: "For the first time ever, a member of the LGBT community will be a senior member of the Israeli government."
"As a Jew, as an Israeli, as the partner of the love of my life Alon Haddad, as the father of Ella and David, as a mizrachi (Sephardi), as a Likudnik, as a Beersheva resident, as a liberal and as a lawyer who has spent thousands of hours in court, it is a great honor to serve Israel as justice minister," Ohana said. "I want to thank the prime minister for putting his hige trust in me and all those who have moved me with their congratulations."
Ohana replaces Ayelet Shaked who Netanyahu fired on Sunday. Netanyahu is expected to appoint several more ministers from Likud next week, but he had to expedite the appointment of a justice minister, because Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit ruled that Netanyahu could not hold the portfolio due to his ongoing criminal cases.
Shaked wished best of luck to her successor and offered to assist him in any way possible. The appointment was praised by top figures in Likud, including Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev and MK Uzi Dayan.
But Union of Right-wing Parties MK Bezalel Smotrich criticized the appointment, because he wanted it for himself. He accused Netanyahu of mistreating the religious Zionist sector and warned that "lessons will be learned."
The Likud responded that there would soon be appointments from the Union of Right-wing Parties but added that Ohana's appointment meant that Smotrich's wish of a counctry led by religious law would not come true. Smotrich's party responded to the Likud by saying that Netanyahu "took Smotrich's words about running the country by Jewish law out of context in an ugly way."

Israeli Police Fire Tear Gas at Palestinian Christians Protesting Israeli Exhibit Mocking Jesus Christ
Hundreds of Palestinian Christians and their supporters gathered Friday in Haifa, in northern Israel, to protest an Israeli exhibit that featured Ronald McDonald taking the place of Jesus on the cross.
The so-called "McJesus" exhibit was created by Finnish artist Jani Leinon, and has been on display at a gallery in Haifa as part of a gallery exhibition called 'Sacred Goods'.
It recently came to the attention of church authorities in Haifa, who called for the protest.
The Greek Patriarchate said "While we express freedom of expression, this should not include mocking and targeting our religion and religious figures".
The Patriarchate added that they blame the municipality of Haifa for this exhibit. They said that the Municipality collects taxes, including from those Christians that were insulted by this exhibit. This was especially insulting because the timing of the exhibit came just as the Greek Orthodox Christians were celebrating Christmas, according to their calendar.
The Israeli authorities claimed that the night before the protest, an unknown person threw a flaming bottle at the museum, causing minimal damage.
During the protest on Friday, Israeli police say that three of their officers were hit by rocks and bottles and injured. Dozens of Palestinian protesters were treated for the effects of tear gas inhalation.
The Israeli Cultural Minister, Miri Regev, on Thursday weighed in on the issue, saying that she had received " many complaints of serious offense caused to the Christian community's feelings", and asked the Director General of Haifa Museums to remove the controversial artwork.

'It's us or them,' Netanyahu's party says of Palestinians and Africans in race-baiting ads
"It's us or them", says a new election poster by Likud, suggesting that Jaffa can be either a "Hebrew city" or one taken over by the "Islamist movement". "Only the Likud - the right of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa" it says at the bottom. There is a second version of the ad where "they" are African refugees, labelled as "infiltrators", as Israelis from both right and left of the political spectrum like to call them (photo in Facebook post by David Sheen).
This is a municipal election racial bating campaign. Municipal elections in Israel, which take place every five years, are set for the end of the month.
"Hebrew city" is to be understood as a euphemism for 'Jewish'. When the main Zionist labor union Histadrut called for "Hebrew work" in pre-state years, it was calling for Judaization of the work market. The notion of "Islamist movement" is to be understood as a reference to Palestinians in general, those whom Israelis would mostly call 'Arabs'. In simple terms, Likud is doing the famous racial-bating of 'Jews VS Arabs'. We know this one from Netanyahu's 2015 warning that the "Arabs" are coming to vote "in droves", on the eve of the last parliamentary elections.
Such racial incitement is not new in Jaffa either - for example in 2013, deputy mayor of Tel Aviv Arnon Giladi, also a Likud member, had launched a poster campaign to silence the Muslim call to prayer in Jaffa and "maintain the Jewish character" of the city. The posters feature a minaret saying "silencing the Muezzin? In Jaffa? Only the Likud can". The hate campaign against African refugees is a more recent development. Prime Minister Netanyahu went last year on a tour in south Tel Aviv, saying he was "on a mission to give back south Tel Aviv to the Israeli residents" from the hands of the African infiltrators. He was touring with Culture Minister Miri Regev (also Likud), who in 2012 called the African refugees "a cancer in our body".
