As reported earlier by Alicia Powe - Without warning, Facebook crashed on Monday morning.

It's unclear what caused today's global outage which saw Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram all crash.

The Daily Mail reported:

Facebook's Chief Technology Officer offered his 'sincere apologies' on Monday afternoon as a global outage of the website along with Instagram and WhatsApp stretched into its fifth hour, costing the company $50billion and CEO Mark Zuckerberg $7billion and counting.

The cause of the outage is believed to have been changes made to Facebook's systems at 11.50am EST.

It is believed they were caused in error and were not a cyber attack, but Facebook is yet to confirm the cause of the outage.

It sparked global outages that are detrimental to online businesses and decimate the company's ad-wielding power.

At 3.50pm, four hours after the outage began, CTO Mike Schroepfer tweeted: '*Sincere* apologies to everyone impacted by outages of Facebook powered services right now. We are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible.'

Facebook CTO To Step Down After 13 Years

Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer, the man who oversees the the social giant's work in artificial intelligence, virtual reality and the blockchain, will step down next year after 13 years with the company; he will be replaced by longtime Facebook executive, Andrew Bosworth, will take over as CTO, Bloomberg reported citing an internal message on Wednesday from Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg

Schroepfer's move - which comes on a day Facebook shares tumbled after the company warned Apple's privacy changes will have a bigger Q3 impact than it previously disclosed - marks the most significant departure from the company in years and follows the recent exits of several other top executives.

Schroepfer joined Facebook in 2008 and has been CTO since 2013, reporting directly to Zuckerberg. He sits atop many of Facebook's most ambitious organizations – including groups that the social network is depending on for future growth - such as engineering, infrastructure, augmented reality and VR, and the blockchain and finance unit. His desk sits next to Zuckerberg's and operating chief Sheryl Sandberg's at Facebook headquarters.

Schroepfer's most central role has been his oversight of Facebook's AI organization, which he helped build. That group develops the technology Facebook uses to automatically find and remove content that violates its policies, like nudity, hate speech and graphic violence.

According to Bloomberg, Schroepfer, 46, will continue to advise the company in a new part-time "senior fellow" role, helping with recruiting technical talent and developing the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. "This new position will also create more space for me to dedicate time to my family and my personal philanthropic efforts while staying deeply connected to the company," Schroepfer wrote in an internal post.

"Boz will continue leading Facebook Reality Labs and overseeing our work in augmented reality, virtual reality and more, and as part of this transition a few other groups will join Facebook Reality Labs over the next year as well," Zuckerberg wrote to employees.

Before joining Facebook, Schroepfer worked for web browser maker Mozilla. A Stanford University graduate, he has become one of the most visible Facebook executives, often speaking at events and at Facebook's own annual developer conference. New information about Facebook's effort to develop brain-reading technology came to light last month after a recording from a company meeting was leaked to the press.

Speaking with Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other top executives of the social media giant, Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer previewed a sensor device that he said can read "neural signals coming from my brain, down my spinal cord along my arm, to my wrist."

He added that "this sensor that we are building detects [neural signals], interprets them, and allows me to control [the] device." This includes, for instance, typing or playing video games with mental commands.

Schroepfer's revelations are the latest from the Big Tech company's secretive, years-long quest to put out a neural device. The project began with plans for a "brain mouse" that would allow users to type with their minds, as the director of Facebook's now-defunct research lab, Building 8, announced in 2017.

Since then, Facebook has purchased neural interface startup CTRL-Labs, the developer of an experimental wristband that purports to give users the ability to operate computers by thinking.

In a post announcing the acquisition of CTRL-Labs in 2019, the head of Facebook Reality Labs, Andrew Bosworth, claimed that the wristband "will decode" neural signals and "translate them into a digital signal your device can understand." "It captures your intention so you can share a photo with a friend using an imperceptible movement," or by "intending to," he added.

Earlier that year, Facebook had revealed details of a separate thought-reading headset in a paper published in Nature Communications. Researchers backed by the company claimed that the algorithm for the headset technology could interpret speech from brain signals with 61-76% accuracy.

The research team published another paper in 2020 detailing an artificial intelligence system that can translate thoughts to text in real time by analyzing brain data. The AI had an error rate that was as low as 3%, according to the study. In the leaked audio from December, Mike Schroepfer noted that Facebook uses artificial intelligence prolifically to censor certain users, celebrating that AI bots remove 95% of "hate speech."

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook Inc is slated to begin a tax trial in a San Francisco court on Tuesday, as the Internal Revenue Service tries to convince a judge the world's largest social media company owes more than $9 billion linked to its decision to shift profits to Ireland.

The trial, which Facebook expects will take three to four weeks, could see top executives including hardware chief Andrew Bosworth and Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer called to testify, according to a document the company filed in January.

The witness list also includes Naomi Gleit and Javier Olivan, veterans of Facebook's aggressive growth team, and Chief Revenue Officer David Fischer.

The IRS argues that Facebook understated the value of the intellectual property it sold to an Irish subsidiary in 2010 while building out global operations, a move common among U.S. multinationals. Ireland has lower corporate tax rates than the United States, so the move reduced the company's tax bill.

Under the arrangement, Facebook's subsidiaries pay royalties to the U.S.-based parent for access to its trademark, users and platform technologies. From 2010 to 2016, Facebook Ireland paid Facebook U.S. more than $14 billion in royalties and cost-sharing payments, according to the court filing.

The company said the low valuation reflected the risks associated with Facebook's international expansion, which took place in 2010 before its IPO and the development of its most lucrative digital advertising products.

This was backed up by a report in The New York Times, which said there were frustrations over Zuckerberg's vision for the company.

Facebook sprang a surprise Thursday when CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that another of his key lieutenants was leaving the company.

Following the departure of senior executives such as the Instagram founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, Zuckerberg said the company's chief product officer, Chris Cox, was headed for the door after 13 years. Chris Daniels, the head of WhatsApp, is also leaving.

Soon after everything was official, Cox published his goodbye letter to staff on his Facebook page. On first read, it's an ode to his good times at the company, in which he praises the senior management team and calls Zuckerberg a "dear friend."

In the comments below, there are glowing tributes from Zuckerberg ("It's been an honor and I'm deeply grateful"), Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg ("We are a better company for what you have given"), and the company's chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer ("I'll deeply miss seeing you").

But there's a telling line in Cox's letter signaling disagreements over the direction Zuckerberg is taking Facebook- namely, its pivot to privacy and encryption, which the CEO set out in a manifesto last week.

Here's the key part of Cox's note:

"As Mark has outlined, we are turning a new page in our product direction, focused on an encrypted, interoperable, messaging network.

"It's a product vision attuned to the subject matter of today: a modern communications platform that balances expression, safety, security, and privacy.

"This will be a big project and we will need leaders who are excited to see the new direction through."

This final sentence is revealing. Saying that Zuckerberg's vision will need people who believe in the direction of travel implies that Cox is not among them.

Indeed, The New York Times reports that there were "disagreements" over Zuckerberg's plan, which in essence will combine the back ends of WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram messaging to create an interoperable messaging service, protected by end-to-end encryption.

Citing six sources, The Times reported that Cox "disagreed with some of Mr. Zuckerberg's product ideas and changes, including the 'unified messaging' project intended to connect the apps."

This was echoed by Ben Horowitz, the cofounder of the influential Silicon Valley venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Horowitz's partner, Marc Andreessen, is a Facebook board member.

Horowitz tweeted that the departures of Cox and Daniels showed there was "extremely strong dissent" over Zuckerberg's vision for Facebook. He added that it's a huge change of direction and that it "is quite clear that the decision was massively controversial."

Dugan will lead a new team inside the company dubbed Building 8. At Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park, California, each building is tagged with its own number, but there is no Building 8-yet. The name seems to be a play off the aims of the new group: to build all sorts of future technologies for the company. Why 8? There are eight letters in the Facebook name. According to Zuckerberg, the company will put "hundreds of people and hundreds of millions of dollars" in the group, but he did not give a specific time frame for these commitments.

In a way, Dugan and Building 8 are merely continuing work that is already well underway at Facebook. This week, at its F8 conference, the centerpiece of its year, Facebook unveiled a new-age video camera that can generate 360-degree video for the social network and two new wireless antenna systems that can expand the reach of the internet (and thus the reach of Facebook). These projects are indicative of the company's rather consistent effort to build new technologies-both with hardware and software-that can advance its core mission: to "connect everyone on Earth."

Google takes a somewhat similar approach to research and development, and Dugan was a big part of that inside Facebook's primary rival. As the head of Google's Advanced Technologies and Projects group, or ATAP-which came to Google via its acquisition of phone maker Motorola-she oversaw the development of Project Tango (an effort to create tools for digitally capturing our surroundings and converting them into 3D virtual worlds), and Project Ara (an effort to create tools for building highly modular mobiles phones). The group has also explored projects related to biometrics and security, something that could be quite useful to Facebook. Inside ATAP, the aim was not just to explore new ideas that may or may not come to fruition in the years to come, but to rapidly and actively push new technologies into the real world.

While Building 8 is only less than a year old, the group is already ramping up plans to release its products into the wild, with multiple open "go-to-market," retail, supply chain, and customer experience job positions listed on its website.

An open retail manager position says the job will "have the responsibility of creating disruptive ground up shopping experiences of Facebook consumer hardware," and another open partnerships lead position says the person will "build an engaging and successful 3 year partnership strategy for Building 8 retail."

The listings also indicate that Facebook plans to leverage outside partnerships to sell its products. One responsibility for the partnerships lead position is to "identify unique and inspiring collaborations that will drive innovation, impact social good, and inspire consumer loyalty and trust."

Shipping and selling consumer hardware to millions of people represents a new challenge for Facebook, which to date has only tried smaller-scale retail pushes for its expensive Oculus VR headset.

Facebook's early efforts with Building 8 are an indication that the company wants to be a serious player in augmented reality, which is considered to be the next frontier of technology, according to Loup Ventures partner Gene Munster.

"They realize to be part of this next wave, they've got to get real and hurry," said Munster, who was previously known for his coverage of Apple as a Piper Jaffray analyst.

The experiment was designed to assess whether more positive or negative comments in a Facebook newsfeed would impact how the user updated their own page. Facebook used an algorithm to filter content. Researchers found those shown more negative comments posted more negative comments and vice versa.

"It is clear now that there are things we should have done differently," Schroepfer writes. "For example, we should have considered other non-experimental ways to do this research. The research would also have benefited from more extensive review by a wider and more senior group of people. Last, in releasing the study, we failed to communicate clearly why and how we did it."

He also announced a new set of guidelines for how Facebook will approach research in the future. Research that relates to content that "may be considered deeply personal (such as emotions) it will go through an enhanced review process before research can begin. The guidelines also require further review if the work involves a collaboration with someone in the academic community," he said.

A review panel consisting of engineering, research, legal, privacy and policy teams will assess projects falling within these guidelines. Research practices have been added to Facebook's six-week training "bootcamp" and the company's academic research will be available for public scrutiny at a single location and regularly updated

"We believe in research, because it helps us build a better Facebook. Like most companies today, our products are built based on extensive research, experimentation and testing," said Schroepfer. "We want to do this research in a way that honours the trust you put in us by using Facebook every day," said.
