Saudi Arabia sentences dozens of Palestinians, Jordanians
9 Aug 2021
A court in Saudi Arabia has delivered verdicts against 69 Palestinians and Jordanians, handing jail terms of up to 22 years to some while also acquitting an unspecified number on Sunday.
The group was detained in March 2018 during a wave of arrests by Saudi authorities on a group of long-term Palestinian and Jordanian residents in the kingdom on alleged links with an unnamed "terrorist" group, according to a 2020 report by Human Rights Watch (HRW).
Saudi authorities have yet to comment on Sunday's verdicts.
"Saudi Arabia's long record of unfair trails [sic] raises the specter that Jordanians and Palestinians will be railroaded on serious charges and face severe penalties even though some have alleged serious abuses," Michael Page, HRW's deputy Middle East director, said in a statement last year.
Detainees can appeal against the sentences after 40 days.
Several Palestinians have been detained since February 2019 and are facing trial before a Saudi terrorism court.
Hamas representatives
The Saudi court sentenced Hamas representative in Saudi Arabia Mohammed al-Khudairi to 15 years in prison. His son, Hani, was sentenced to three years, Anadolu Agency reported.
Al-Khudairi's brother, Abd al-Majeed, told Anadolu Agency that the sentence includes "clemency for half the term".
Al-Khudairi, 82, was a veteran Hamas leader responsible for managing the relationship with Saudi Arabia for two decades.
In February, Amnesty International said al-Khudairi had undergone surgery and was being treated for prostate cancer when the Saudi authorities arrested him and his son in April 2019.
Amnesty called on the Saudi king to ensure that "unfounded charges" against al-Khudairi and his son are dropped and that they are released.
The Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine also condemned rulings.

Targets of Hate
The following are just a few of the places around the world where American symbols have been attacked by violent extremists. Violent extremists have also attacked many symbols important to other countries.
Religious Temple - Oak Creek, Wisconsin
On August 5, 2012, a white supremacist named Wade Michael Page opened fire at a Sikh place of worship near Milwaukee. Six people died and four were wounded. Among those injured was a police officer who was shot multiple times while trying to save others. Page took his own life after being wounded by a police officer.
World Trade Center - New York City, New York
Violent extremists have targeted the World Trade Center two different times. The first attack was on February 26, 1993, when an explosive device set off in the garage killed six people and injured more than a thousand. On September 11, 2001, a group of hijackers flew planes into each of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Nearly 3,000 people from around the world were killed. Al Qaeda extremists carried out both attacks.
U.S. Capitol - Washington, D.C.
On March 1, 1954, Puerto Rican extremists seeking independence from the U.S. used semi-automatic pistols to open fire on a session of the House of Representatives in the U.S. Capitol building. Five members of Congress were wounded, including one seriously. Four people involved in the attack were captured and sent to prison.
Pentagon - Arlington, Virginia
The headquarters of the Department of Defense was one of the targets of the September 11, 2001 attacks by al Qaeda extremists. A hijacked plane traveling 530 miles an hour was slammed into the side of the building, killing 189 people. The Pentagon was also bombed by domestic extremists in 1972, causing flooding in the building.
Ski Resort - Vail, Colorado
On October 19, 1998, environmental extremists torched and virtually destroyed a ski resort in Colorado. The attack caused $24 million in damages. Most of those involved have been captured. Eco-terrorists have sabotaged and firebombed many other symbolic structures nationwide, including universities, government buildings, car dealerships, and new homes.
Federal Building - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
On April 19, 1995, an anti-government extremist named Timothy McVeigh exploded a truck bomb in front of a federal building in Oklahoma City. A total of 168 people were killed-including 19 children-and hundreds more were injured. McVeigh and two others who helped him were sent to prison for the attack.
U.S. Navy Warship - Aden, Yemen
On October 12, 2000, al Qaeda extremists exploded a small boat alongside the USS Cole as it was refueling in the Yemeni port of Aden. The blast ripped a 40-foot-wide hole near the waterline of the vessel, killing 17 American sailors and injuring many more. Some of those responsible for the attack have been killed or captured, but others remain missing.
U.S. Embassy - Nairobi, Kenya
On August 7, 1998, violent extremists bombed two U.S. Embassies in East Africa at nearly the same time-one in Kenya and one in Tanzania. More than 200 people were killed and thousands were wounded. Both attacks were directly linked to al Qaeda. So far, more than 20 people have been connected to the bombings; several have been captured or killed.
Don't Be a Puppet
Violent extremists often twist the meaning of symbols to help find and motivate new recruits. They also pick symbolic targets to make their attacks seem more important. Don't be a puppet. Learn to recognize when you are being tricked by the way extremists use symbols.

The War on Yemen, 100,000 Deaths, A Crisis Ignored by Mainstream Media Due to Coronavirus Coverage
The world pays constant attention to the coronavirus, occupying the news agencies with a high coverage of the pandemic. Meanwhile, on the global periphery, geopolitics continues at full throttle, with several conflicts occurring unnoticed by most people outside the affected regions. The case of Yemen is a clear example of what we are talking about here. Recently, the conflict in the country completed five years of uninterrupted fighting, reaching the regrettable marks of more than 10,000 killed in the confrontation, in addition to almost 100,000 killed by the social ills caused by the war, such as hunger, mainly among children. The poorest country in the Arabian Peninsula has become a strategic area in strong dispute and a real geopolitical thermometer for Middle East tensions, especially between the two regional powers most involved in the conflict, Iran and Saudi Arabia, which are increasing their rivalry day after day.
The most noteworthy attitude is that of Saudi Arabia, which, aligned with the western axis, has been taking increasingly aggressive stances in the country, causing unnecessary suffering to the local population and prolonging the terror and fear in the region. Human Rights Watch data show that Saudi Arabia has been behind fundamental rights abuses against the Yemeni population, especially in the al-Mahrah region, since at least June last year, when such crimes began to be investigated. HRW Middle East Director Michael Page stated in an interview with PressTV:
"Saudi forces and their Yemeni allies' serious abuses against local-Mahrah residents is another horror to add to the list of the Saudi-led coalition's unlawful conduct in Yemen (...) Saudi Arabia is severely harming its reputation with Yemenis when it carries out these abusive practices and holds no one accountable for them".
Among the abuses reported by HRW, we highlight illegal arrests, torture, kidnappings and compulsory transfer of detainees to Saudi Arabia. In addition, other international crimes had previously been reported by the organization as being committed by the American coalition against Houthi resistance in the region, including bombing homes, businesses and hospitals. In February, at least 30 Yemeni civilians died from airstrikes conducted by Saudi military in the north of the country, in the district of Jawf al-Maslub. The attack was said to have been conducted in response to the downing of a Saudi aircraft by the Houthi forces. In the words of Houthi movement spokesman Yahya Saree:

Rights group says Egypt arrests 40 lawyers, activists
CAIRO (AP) - An international rights group says Egypt has rounded up at least 40 lawyers and activists since last month, the latest arrests in a wide-scale crackdown on dissent.
Human Rights Watch said Sunday that many of those arrested were people who provided humanitarian and legal support to families of political detainees, and that some have been disappeared.
Citing family members, it said the security forces did not present arrest warrants and authorities refused to say where detainees were being held.
Michael Page, the deputy director of Human Rights Watch's regional office, says "the Egyptian security agencies' repression now extends to disappearing those brave men and women who have been trying to protect the disappeared and to end this abusive practice."
