Why I Think of Clarence Thomas and the Nuns Who Inspired Him Each MLK Day
Mark Paoletta January 15, 2023
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas is hailed by many for his inspiring life. But through it all, good or bad, Thomas stays focused on the important things in life.
He never has forgotten those who helped him along the way. For many years on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the justice would visit his eighth-grade teacher, Sister Mary Virgilius Reidy, and dozens of her fellow nuns, in a retirement convent in New Jersey.
Clarence Thomas was born into abject poverty in the segregated Deep South to parents who were poor and uneducated. His father left when he was 2, and he ultimately was sent to live with his grandparents in Savannah, Georgia.
His grandfather enrolled Clarence and his brother in St. Benedict's, a segregated, all-black, Catholic elementary school. It was run by the Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (most of them from Ireland), who endured disparaging slurs, including the N-word, for dedicating their lives to teaching black students.
"They wore that as a badge of honor," Thomas recalls in the book "Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words," which I co-edited with Michael Pack.
The Franciscan nuns changed his life, and Thomas always has been grateful for their love and support. The nuns held their students to the highest academic standards, and did not allow them to make any excuse, even though these students lived under state-enforced discrimination.
As Thomas recounts in "Created Equal": "You knew they loved you. When you think somebody loves you and deeply cares about your interests, somehow they can get you to do hard things."
In the 1980s, when he was part of the Reagan administration, Thomas sought out Sister Virgilius, who was living in Boston. Thomas recalls: "I went by to see her, and I sat with her, and I thanked her for teaching me and making me believe that we could learn, and for not letting me slip into victim status and forcing me out of it."
In 1984, Thomas returned to his hometown of Savannah to pay tribute at an event honoring the Franciscan Sisters, where he said:
There was no way I could have survived if it had not been for the nuns-our nuns, who made me pray when I didn't want to and didn't know why I should-who made me work when I saw no reason to-who made me believe in the equality of races when our country paid lip service to equality and our church tolerated inequality-who made me accept responsibilities for my own life when I looked for excuses. No, my friends, without our nuns, I would not have made it to square one.
Thomas again thanked the nuns when he was nominated by President George H.W. Bush to the Supreme Court in 1991, and Sister Virgilius, then 80 years old and nursing a broken arm, later testified on behalf of her former student at his confirmation hearings.
After Thomas joined the Supreme Court, for many years on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we would leave his home around 6 a.m. and drive up to Tenafly, New Jersey, to spend the day with Sister Virgilius and her fellow sisters, many of whom also taught Thomas and others at St. Benedict's.
We had lunch in the cafeteria with all the nuns, and Thomas' face displayed such joy as he reminisced about those days and caught up on how the nuns were all doing. He would visit sisters who were bedridden in the infirmary.
When Sister Virgilius passed away in 2013 at age 100, we attended her funeral together.
In October 2021, many celebrated Thomas' 30th anniversary on the Supreme Court and his influence on American law, including a daylong celebration at The Heritage Foundation with remarks by the justice himself. But Thomas was more focused on an event earlier that week: the blessing of a statue of Sister Virgilius and two students at a cemetery where 200 Franciscan sisters are buried.
On a beautiful October day, in a small, private ceremony attended by more than 20 nuns, many of whom were in their 80s, along with friends and family members, Thomas greeted all of them with hugs and smiles.
When he made his brief remarks, Thomas fought through tears to thank the nuns who changed his life. It was a beautiful moment that captured his humility.
"This extraordinary statue is dedicated to you sisters-to all of you who have given so much and who have asked for so little," he said.
As Martin Luther King Jr. Day comes around every year, I always think of how these nuns changed the course of Clarence Thomas' life, and how this great man, our nation's greatest Supreme Court justice, always found time to honor those who helped him under the most difficult of circumstances.
It's a compelling American story

How liberal policies have killed black communities: Clarence Thomas
June 22, 2022
"In this excerpt from the just-published "Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words" by Michael Pack and Mark Paoletta, the Supreme Court justice reflects on changes in his hometown, Savannah, Ga. The book is based on more than 30 hours of interviews Pack conducted with Thomas and his wife Ginni for the film of the same name; 95% of the book's material is new, including this excerpt.
Michael Pack: You have talked a little today about how life in the black community has not been improved by many well-intentioned social programs. Do you think, in some sense, it is worse than when you grew up?
Clarence Thomas: It's a disaster. When I grew up, you had family, you didn't have drugs, you didn't have gang-banging. You could walk down the street.
There was a change in our society. I think that these programs certainly had an impact. Just go back to Savannah and take a look around you. Our worst fears were realized. We didn't want to be right; we wanted to be wrong. It wasn't about winning an argument. No, we wanted to lose the argument. We did not want the damage to occur; that's why we were involved. I don't particularly like public life; I never wanted to be in public life. I'd like to go to football games. I'd like not to make decisions about other people's lives, but what drags you into it is when you see these principles being undermined, which leads to such destruction. The policies destroy people, and, ultimately, I think, we're going to destroy the very thing that allows us to have liberty and to have a free society."

Biden quickly rehired senior officials fired by Trump for alleged security, financial lapses
"If I was a spy, where would I target? Obviously" the U.S. Agency for Global Media, Trump appointee said.
The Biden administration quickly rehired senior officials fired for serious security and financial lapses in the waning days of the Trump administration, according to documents reviewed by Just the News.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media, home to the Voice of America and funder of nonprofit broadcasters targeting Europe, Asia and the Middle East, also rehired an official who resigned shortly before his investigation was complete.
The media portrayed them as whistleblowers protecting journalistic integrity from political appointees who wanted to dictate their coverage. Official summaries of their investigations by an outside law firm, recently entered into the Congressional Record, complicate that narrative.
Many alleged violations were related to the agency's continued performance of background investigations on workers - often foreign nationals - for several years after it lost its "delegated authority" from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
The rehired officials were also granted their security clearances during that time, investigators from McGuireWoods law firm wrote in Dec. 9, 2020 memos. McGuireWoods was the law firm retained to perform an investigation into mismanagement or worse at USAGM.
Delegated authority is rare outside the intelligence community, according to Federal News Network. When OPM actively blocked the agency from doing its own reviews in 2020 after years of warnings, a spokesperson said it was the first such action in more than 20 years.
Security problems were compounded by USAGM's heavy use of the J-1 visa program - intended for au pairs, students and other "exchange visitors" - to fill its journalistic and technical ranks. Outgoing CEO Michael Pack told his inspector general the agency was "rubber stamping" these applications and renewals when he arrived in mid-2020.
A Trump political appointee emphasized to Just the News that career adjudicators made the recommendations to dismiss the employees, based not only on McGuireWoods reviews but USAGM's internal investigations.
"If I was a spy, where would I target?" the appointee asked rhetorically: "Obviously this agency" whose allegedly deficient background checks provide easy entry to other federal agencies, thanks to reciprocity agreements on security clearances.
Pack and his team were "flooded with actual whistleblowers" when they arrived, according to the appointee: Half were too afraid of retaliation to put their claims in writing, and those who did have faced actual retaliation since the Biden transition.
It's mind-blowing how the fired senior officials "paint themselves as whistleblowers when they're not," the appointee said.

Federal agency that broadcasts America's message had chronic security lapses, records show
Biden administration quickly rehired senior officials dismissed on recommendation of career adjudicators, following investigation by outside law firm.
The federal agency responsible for broadcasting America's message to the world routinely ignored security protocols "for at least a decade" while using the same visas intended for au pairs to hire foreign nationals as journalists, according to a report its first Senate-confirmed CEO sent investigators.
A week before President Biden took office and immediately fired him, Michael Pack submitted a formal request to the State Department's Office of Inspector General for a full investigation of security, financial and other issues in the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which Pack led for seven months.
His report, and supporting materials, alleged that 1,500 of the agency's 4,000 workers had security clearance issues such as improper background checks.
Pack's leadership team "learned that previous senior management had repeatedly failed to adhere to national security protocols and essential federal government personnel security practices for at least a decade," the report said. "The actions - and, in many cases, inactions - of the individuals responsible for producing this crisis placed U.S. national security in danger and imperiled USAGM's ability to fulfill its legal mandate of advancing U.S. foreign policy."
Biden's new USAGM leadership quickly rehired senior officials dismissed on the recommendation of career adjudicators, following investigations by McGuireWoods, an outside law firm. Just the News has reviewed the official summaries of the law firm's investigation, which were recently submitted by Rep. Scott Perry (R-Pa.) into the Congressional Record along with Pack's Jan. 14, 2021 letter.
Perry told Just the News Not Noise Tuesday that he "legally" obtained those materials after the agency refused to share them. USAGM then told him "you don't have all of it" and refused to provide the rest. "American taxpayers have paid for this," Perry said. "This is corruption at the highest level," including an employee subsequently convicted of embezzling.
Officials dismissed by Pack "left largely unaddressed" repeated warnings from federal intelligence and personnel offices, he wrote to State Department Deputy Inspector General Diana Shaw.
The veteran PBS documentary filmmaker also alleged the agency allowed a senior official to spin off a fund intended for internet firewall circumvention in repressive countries and use it as a slush fund.
U.S. intelligence services told Pack they were "watching" three individuals in the agency "and another has come up since," showing "there's a real risk here," Pack told Just the News Not Noise. "Why have security procedures if you're not going to follow them?"
One of the rehired officials, a senior strategy official, was found to have "wiped or otherwise factory reset" agency-issued electronic devices when he was put on leave pending investigation, violating multiple internal policies and possibly federal record retention rules, the law firm inquiry found.

Voice of America removes content from freelancer arrested for allegedly being Russian spy
VOA is federally funded and overseen by U.S. Agency for Global Media
The Voice of America news agency has removed content from a freelance journalist recently arrested on suspicion of being a spy for Russia and is "thoroughly reviewing" the submissions, according to a recent news report.
The content by Pablo Gonzalez was removed from the federally funded news agency's website and social media accounts following his arrest in late February in Poland on espionage charges, the Washington Free Beacon reported Monday.
Polish authorities arrested Gonzalez on the suspicion that he was working for the Russian intelligence service, the GRU. They allege Gonzalez collected information from inside Poland and was planning to do the same in Ukraine.
The Spanish national born in Russia reportedly produced at least half a dozen pieces for VOA last year, most of them documenting action from the frontlines of the Nagorno-Karabakh war being fought between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The international security agency of Poland has accused Gonzalez of "conducting his business for Russia while taking advantage of his journalist status," according to the Beacon.
"He was never a VOA employee, nor did he have a contract directly with VOA," VOA spokesperson, Bridget Serchak said. "While VOA is currently unaware of any information that would confirm the allegations against this freelancer, out of an abundance of caution, VOA has removed all of Gonzalez's content from its websites and social media accounts and is thoroughly reviewing the stories.
In 2020, former CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA, Michael Pack told the Federalist that the outlet would be a "great place to put a foreign spy" because of its substandard security practices.

Alleged Russian Spy Worked For U.S. Government News Agency
A Spanish journalist arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia recently worked for Voice of America, the United States government's international media organization.
Pablo Gonzalez was arrested at the Poland-Ukraine border earlier this week on charges that he was secretly working for Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU. Gonzalez, a Spanish national born in Russia, was identified as a freelance reporter for the Spanish outlets El Sixto and Publico. He has also worked as a freelance reporter for Voice of America (VOA) since at least 2020. Gonzalez helped produce a VOA segment from inside Ukraine last month, according to a Washington Free Beacon investigation.
Gonzalez's previously unreported work could raise concerns that he used his VOA position to collect intelligence for Russia. If Gonzalez is indeed a Russian spy, it would lend credence to concerns raised by Michael Pack, who oversaw VOA during the Trump administration. Pack came under fire from Democrats when he said VOA was "a great place to put a foreign spy" given the agency's lax security standards. VOA staffers and others in the media accused Pack of undermining the agency and putting its journalists at risk.
Poland's internal security agency said Friday that Gonzalez was "conducting his business for Russia while taking advantage of his journalist status." The counterintelligence agency said Gonzalez collected information for Russia's spy service during his recent stay in Poland and that he planned to continue his activities in war torn Ukraine.
Gonzalez is identified as a cameraman for a Feb. 4 Voice of America story from Dnipro, a city in eastern Ukraine. The story told of residents' preparations for a Russian invasion of Ukraine. A reporter who worked with Gonzalez on the story cast doubt on the allegations from Polish authorities.
"The accusations against Pablo are ridiculous, I have worked with him in many places and I know he is a top-notch professional," said Ricardo Marquinia, another VOA contributor.
Gonzalez was detained two days after the VOA report by Ukrainian authorities and accused of reporting from military-controlled areas without proper accreditation, Reuters reported. He was released hours after that initial arrest.
The GRU is one of the world's most aggressive spy agencies. It was behind the cyber attacks during the 2016 U.S. elections and is alleged to have hacked Ukrainian government websites during the current war. Reuters has reported that American intelligence officials also determined that the GRU has long operated a so-called illegals program, where undercover spies live under assumed identities in their target countries, sometimes for years.
Founded in 1942, VOA is the United States' megaphone to the world, operating in dozens of countries that have historically stifled the free press. The United States used VOA during the Cold War to broadcast anti-Communist messages, prompting Russia and Soviet republics to jam VOA's radio signal. Russia designated VOA as a foreign agent of the United States in 2017 in retaliation for Washington placing the same label on Russia Today.
Gonzalez reported extensively last year for VOA about the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia, according to his Twitter feed and VOA's website.
A spokeswoman for VOA said the agency is aware of Gonzalez's arrest, and that they reported it "to all relevant security authorities." The spokeswoman said Gonzalez was a stringer-another term for a freelancer-but that he had not filed a story since July 2021. The spokeswoman declined to comment about his recent story from Ukraine.

Many of Donald Trump's most notorious appointees, including his Cabinet secretaries, resigned shortly before Joe Biden took office. But myriad officials whom Trump installed in the executive branch remained in spite of their antagonism toward the new president's agenda. Hours into his presidency, Biden has already ousted three of his predecessors' most unqualified and corrupt appointees. Biden cleans house at VOA after revolt over Trump changes
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Biden administration has moved quickly to remove a number of senior officials aligned with former President Donald Trump from the Voice of America and the agency that oversees all U.S.-funded international broadcasting.
The actions address fears that the U.S. Agency for Global Media was being turned into a pro-Trump propaganda outlet. The agency announced Thursday that VOA's director and his deputy had been removed from their positions and that the head of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting had resigned.
The moves come just a day after President Joe Biden was sworn in and demanded the resignation of Trump's hand-picked CEO of USAGM, Michael Pack

–In other cases, Biden has sought to get rid of people installed by Trump in what the new president considers bad faith.
For example, Biden quickly forced out Michael Pack, the controversial head of the agency that oversees the Voice of America and four other networks that broadcast news to millions of people abroad, amid complaints of censorship and political interference by Pack. Biden also removed the VOA's director and deputy director after they had been on the job only a few weeks, and the head of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting resigned.–
Andrew Saul, a Trump appointee whose six-year term as Social Security commissioner officially ends in 2025, had a curious new "acting" title on a list of temporary government leaders distributed by the new White House last week. Saul announced Thursday that several high-ranking deputies on his team, who had pushed for stricter eligibility for benefits, had been replaced - with labor-friendly Democrats. The Social Security Administration did not respond to a request for comment about the acting title.
In firing the National Labor Relations Board's general counsel, Peter Robb, Biden broke with precedent to end the tenure of a figure seen as a foe by worker advocates and labor unions.
Robb had refused to resign when asked to do so just hours into the new presidency. The request was a departure from the norm that presidents of both parties have followed to allow the general counsel to serve out their term. Robb's term was scheduled to run another 10 months.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked last week whether Biden is pursuing a political purge.
"That's an individual who was not carrying out … the objectives of the NLRB, and so they were, they are, no longer in their position," she said. "We'll make those decisions as needed."

Pack, a conservative documentary filmmaker and confidante of former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, had only been CEO of the agency since June of last year, but during his short tenure he fired the heads of its news outlets, and replaced veterans of the agency with conservative loyalists.
Michael Pack, the controversial CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, is resigning as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, at the request of the Biden administration.
"It is disheartening that my resignation has been requested," Pack wrote in his letter. "This will long be viewed as a partisan act that harmed an office designed to serve the American people and the national interest."
After the election, Biden tapped former Time managing editor and under secretary of state Richard Stengel to serve as his transition's team lead for the agency, figuring out what changes would need to be made once he was sworn in. Requesting Pack's resignation was apparently one of those first changes. Pack had two and a half years left in his term.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty and other international news outlets, had previously been overseen by an independent board called the Broadcasting Board of Governors. President Obama signed a law in 2016 reorganizing the agency so that it would be led by a CEO appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Of course, Navalny tied it to himself and the situation in Russia, which is still showing - he claims that Russia heavily censors him and he is the "arch-enemy of evil overlord Vladimir Putin" and now, the United States does the same to Trump? According to Navalny, such a precedent would be exploited by the enemies of freedom of speech around the world and that whenever someone needed someone silenced, they would say "'this is just common practice, even Trump got blocked on Twitter.'"
Navalny's criticism is also interesting, since Trump has been accused of allegedly being an ally of Vladimir Putin more than once.
Regardless, among praises of Trump's ban on MSM, in addition to various pieces condemning his supporters as domestic terrorists, there's another notable development.
The U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO Michael Pack was accused of funneling more than $4 million to his private documentary company through a not-for-profit that he also controls.
He was appointed by Trump, and he was just discovered to be quite corrupt, when Trump is exiting office and it is likely time for a new state-funded propaganda.
According to an NPR report, five recent chiefs of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty - appointed under Democratic and Republican administrations - jointly warned President-elect Joe Biden that Pack poses "a long-term threat to the credibility and professionalism of the five networks" he oversees.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is to appear on VOA on January 11th, and whistleblowers used the chance to accuse Pack, since there's only 9 days for Trump in office, and likely Pompeo is following close.
Pack will be replaced promptly as well. He reportedly attempted to extend his time in his executive seat by cooperating with "conservative allies" that will steer Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks. The not-for-profit broadcasters are all funded by the federal government through USAGM.
Those networks, along with VOA and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, collectively reach more than 350 million people across the world each week.
"They historically have demonstrated American pluralism by providing balanced coverage of news events and robust political debate, regardless of how it reflects on current government officials. The broadcasters are also intended to serve the citizens of nations which do not allow journalists to operate freely."
Turns out they were just lining somebody's pockets and now a new propaganda engine is needed, which is also not conservative.
Pack did the same with three other non-profit networks funded by USAGM and made himself board chairman over Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; Radio Free Asia; and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks.

They got a judge to protect the press money train ((spooks))
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/11/21/judge-bars-trump-appointee-from-interfering-in-voice-of-america
A federal judge in the United States has effectively barred the head of the agency that runs the state-funded news organisation Voice of America (VOA) from interfering in editorial operations or making personnel decisions.
The ruling against US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) CEO Michael Pack comes after he was accused of trying to turn VOA into a propaganda outlet in support of Donald Trump and the US president's agenda.
The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia in October by five executives who had been fired or suspended, accused Pack and his senior advisers of violating the "statutory firewall" intended to protect the news organisations from political interference.
In her ruling late on Friday, Judge Beryl Howell imposed preliminary injunctions that prevent Pack from making personnel decisions about journalists employed by the agency, directly communicating with them, and conducting any investigations into editorial content or individual journalists.
In an August interview with the Federalist news website, Pack said news organisations operating under USAGM were "great cover for a spy" and "from the beginning ... they've been penetrated".

US Hearings Reveal Washington's Covert Support for 'Color Revolutions' Around the World
Last week, the House Foreign Affairs Committee grilled Michael Pack, who President Trump recently appointed to head the US government's state propaganda arm, the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
Pack was appointed in June and started a big shakeup at the US state media outlets run by the USAGM, like Voice of America and Radio Free Asia. Pack fired senior staffers, pushed out management, and froze funding.
During last week's hearing, Democrats and Republicans on the committee teamed up to attack Pack for his purges. But what seemed more important to Congress and former USAGM officials was Pack's move to freeze funds to the Open Technology Fund (OTF). The OTF was formed in 2012 and operated as part of Radio Free Asia for seven years. In 2019, the OTF became an independent non-profit, although it is financed by US taxpayer dollars through the USAGM.
According to former USAGM officials and OTF board members, the OTF supports protesters in other nations across the world. "In many places around the globe, OTF quietly is providing support to protesters," said Grant Turner, the former USAGM chief financial officer, who Pack removed in August. "So the Hong Kong protesters are protecting their identities from surveillance by OTF tools; protesters in Iran; we've seen it in Beirut," Turner said.
Ambassador Karen Kornbluh, who sits on the board of the OTF, also testified and spoke of how the OTF helps protest movements. "OTF has a long history of supporting internet freedom efforts, and was poised to expand its efforts in Hong Kong," Kornbluh said. "It was going to serve support for circumvention tools and expand support for digital training."
Kornbluh explained that the USAGM froze OTF funds before China's national security law for Hong Kong came into effect. "And then USAGM froze, and continues to withhold, its funding - and did that just weeks before the new security laws came into effect," Kornbluh said. "So OTF hasn't been able to support any of these efforts."
The frozen Hong Kong funds were first reported by Time magazine in June. According to Time, Pack froze $2 million that would have "directly benefited the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong." One project the OTF was working on in Hong Kong was a "cybersecurity incident response team" that would have analyzed Chinese surveillance techniques in Hong Kong. The team would have shared information with developers who would design apps for protesters to use. The freeze in funding made this project impossible to go through with.
Another OTF project hampered by the freeze was a $500,000 "rapid response fund, designed to provide fast relief for civil society groups, protesters, journalists, and human rights defenders." According to Time, this initiative has already made several payouts to groups in Hong Kong since the civil unrest began in June 2019.
The cut in funding inadvertently revealed the US government's covert role in the Hong Kong protest movement. The US government-funded National Endowment for Democracy also provides funding for "pro-democracy" movements in Hong Kong.

Suspended Workers of US Agency for Global Media Sue New CEO Alleging Pro-Trump Agenda
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Five suspended media workers have filed a lawsuit against their former employer, US Agency for Global Media (USAGM), accusing the new leadership of having a pro-Trump agenda.
The lawsuit is primarily directed at newly-appointed CEO Michael Pack, accusing his team of routinely violating the editorial "firewall" that guarantees newsroom independence at outlets it funds, namely Voice of America (VoA) and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
The lawsuit accuses the Trump appointee of "insidious politicisation of journalism" and cites numerous examples of USAGM exerting pressure on journalists and editors to cover stories favourably toward the US president.

Trump admin cut funding to OTF, a non-profit that supports protesters in places like Hong Kong, Lebanon, and Iran

OPM Report: U.S. Agency For Global Media Put America's National Security In grave danger
Aug 4, 2020
For nearly a decade, the U.S. agency that oversees all of America's foreign media services failed to comply with its mandate to safely vet its foreign team members and 'ignored common national security protocols.' The multitude of failures put the nation's security at risk and the agency's ability to advance America's national interests overseas in grave danger, stated a recent investigative report released Tuesday by the Office of Personnel Management.
This report has been obtained and reviewed by /ourgirl/ SaraACarter.com.
In the July, 2020 OPM investigative report titled the Follow-Up Review of the U.S. Agency for Global Media Suitability Program, government officials noted that from 2010 and up until new management took over during the Trump administration the agency had failed to comply with previous reports requiring corrective actions to be implemented. U.S. Agency For Global Media became an independent government agency in 1999, and is responsible for all non-military U.S. government sponsored international broadcasting, according to the report.
"It is long past time the government watchdogs begin the task of cleaning up Voice of America," Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus Rep. Andy Biggs told this reporter.
"The recent misuse of that platform for a political ad for the Democratic presidential candidate is just one more example of how that program has gone awry," said Biggs, who was referring to a recent exclusive story published by SaraACarter.com that revealed employees with VOA's Urdu language team had promoted a video they compiled on their social media platforms asking Muslim Americans to vote for Biden. The promotional political ad is now under investigation and numerous employees for the VOA have been reprimanded, according to a follow up report.
USAGM's CEO Michael Pack, who is overseeing changes at the agency and is the first to be Senate-confirmed, has been ordering comprehensive investigations into malfeasance at the agency. According to officials who spoke to this reporter, Pack's call for an investigation is looking into potential damage to U.S. national security, and its notifications are expected to be issued from a federal law enforcement agency regarding the failures.
"Currently, Pack has requested meetings with the Chairmen and Ranking Members of USAGM's Congressional oversight committees," stated a press release from the agency.
Moreover, Pack "is ordering a surge team of security experts to USAGM to overhaul the agency's vetting and security protocols. These are just the beginning steps. Pack and his leadership team are working to repair U.S. government international broadcasting so that it is able, once again, to advance America's national interests."
The situation is far worse than previously suspected.
A former U.S. intelligence official told this reporter that the VOA, along with other U.S. government foreign media agencies, has "long been suspected of being infiltrated by foreign intelligence agencies" for failure to conduct oversight.
"Basically, U.S. taxpayer dollars were paying foreign spies to work against U.S. national interests in many of these agencies," the former intelligence official said. "We knew it but the Obama administration did little to stop it."

EXCLUSIVE: New foreign broadcasting chief cleans house, pushes pro-America reporting
''
Michael Pack moves fast in bid for greater accountability at U.S. broadcasters
The U.S. government's foreign broadcasting services have suffered in recent years from a lack of leadership, and the Trump administration's new broadcasting chief says he wants to fix the problem. Michael Pack, chief executive officer of the new U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), said more assertive news reporting, especially to China, is needed to counter foreign disinformation and to promote American ideals. Mr. Pack, a former television executive and documentary filmmaker, took over two weeks ago as the senior official in charge of the U.S. government network of media outlets that receive about $800 million annually in taxpayer funds to send news and information to closed states such as China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.
"My plan here, and I think everybody in the White House and everybody else knows this, is to hold these agencies accountable to fulfilling their mission, and in [Voice of America's] case, its charter, and that's what I plan to do," Mr. Pack, 66, said in an interview with The Washington Times. Voice of America, the flagship of U.S. government outlets, has a mandate under its charter to provide news and to present U.S. government policies "clearly and effectively" to foreign audiences. Other government-funded outlets under the USAGM are Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia, the Office of Cuba Broadcasting and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks. In recent years, however, VOA has come under fire for shifting its focus from hard news and American views to what critics say is "fluff" soft news with little explanation of U.S. policies. The criticism reached an unusual level in April when a White House website posted a statement saying VOA "too often speaks for America's adversaries - not its citizens."
Dan Scavino, President Trump's social media director, echoed the claims on Twitter. He said American taxpayers were "paying for China's very own propaganda, via the U.S. government-funded Voice of America! DISGRACE!!" That in turn has fueled liberal complaints that the White House is trying to turn a broadcaster with a reputation for evenhandedness into a propaganda organ for the government.

Michael Pack
https://www.heritage.org/political-process/commentary/loss-anti-trump-media-forces-Michael-Pack-confirmed-agency-global
After a delay of two years, on Thursday the U.S. Senate confirmed Michael Pack as the new chief executive officer of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America. About time!
Pack's confirmation follows a period of unconscionable delay, strategizing, and obstructionism by Democratic members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He and his family have been in limbo for much too long.
This behavior culminated in a lengthy rant by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who has been a key member of the opposition, and who recently demanded a delay of the vote because of an official investigation of Pack's finances that Menendez himself had instigated the day before.
Despite this, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., eventually moved the nomination, pressured by the White House. The final vote came in at 53-38, with Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., voting with the Republicans.
Why was Pack's nomination to lead the $700 million agency that oversees U.S. civilian media and communication assets so controversial? The fact is that even though Pack is well-qualified for the post, anti-Trump media forces have fanned the flames with scare-mongering, speculation, and very few facts.
This opposition includes some inside the U.S. Agency for Global Media who have powerful allies among the so-called mainstream media. The oft-repeated, but unsubstantiated allegation is that Pack will turn the agenda into a propaganda shop for the Trump administration.
There is bipartisan recognition of the need to reform the U.S. international broadcasting complex. In 2013, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, "The Broadcasting Board of Governors is practically defunct in terms of its capability to be able to tell a message around the world."
It was President Barack Obama who signed into law the legislation that created the CEO position, for which Pack was just confirmed. This bill also disbanded the nine-member board that had been acting as a dysfunctional collective executive of the agency.
Allegations have arisen that President Donald Trump disbanded the board. No, Obama did, and did so because it wasn't working. To his credit, Obama laid the groundwork for a more streamlined and better functioning broadcasting agency.

New Trump appointee dismisses top leadership in shake-up of broadcasting agency
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/new-trump-appointee-dismisses-top-leadership-in-shake-up-of-broadcasting-agency
The new Trump-appointed CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) - which oversees American taxpayer-funded news broadcasting around the world, including Voice of America (VOA) - fired three of the agency's network heads on Wednesday, just days after the director and deputy director of VOA had stepped down.
The move by Michael Pack rankled Democrats, who had staunchly opposed the appointment of the conservative filmmaker with ties to former Trump chief strategist Steve Bannon. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., warned of the move in advance, saying it would be a step toward the agency, which by law is required to provide unbiased news, becoming a "mouthpiece" for the Trump administration.
Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, on Thursday called the firings an "egregious breach."

Engel warns new Trump appointee to fire senior officials at VOA agency
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/engel-agency-global-media-firing
Rep. Eliot Engel, [D-left out by Fox] the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, on Tuesday night warned of an incoming firing spree against senior leadership of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), the body that oversees Voice of America (VOA), at the behest of new Trump appointee Michael Pack.
Engel, in a statement, said that the firings would happen Wednesday morning and worried that they would lead to the agency, which provides reliable information to many around the world who otherwise would not have access to it, becoming a "mouthpiece" for President Trump. The VOA employs 982 people and operates on a budget of more than $250 million per year.
"I have learned that Michael Pack, the new CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media, intends to force out a number of the agency's career senior leadership tomorrow morning," Engel said. "My fear is that USAGM's role as an unbiased news organization is in jeopardy under his leadership. USAGM's mission is 'to inform, engage, and connect people around the world in support of freedom and democracy'-not to be a mouthpiece for the President in the run up to an election."

This article is LOADED WITH LIBERAL TEARS.
Notable.
" Michael Pack, a conservative filmmaker who's worked closely with Steve Bannon and is reportedly under investigation by the D.C. Attorney General for alleged self-dealing, was confirmed by the Senate earlier this month to lead the agency which runs VOA, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other outlets.
In the two weeks since, two top VOA executives have resigned as the outlet faces unfounded charges from the White House and a reported blacklisting by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Late Tuesday, Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., the chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which oversees USAGM, said in a press release that he'd learned Pack intends to force out a number of the agency's career senior leadership on Wednesday morning. "
None of the heads of the agency's media outlets have heard from Pack since he started, according to a senior USAGM official and a source familiar with the issues.
Pack has removed everyone from the agency's front office and implemented a total hiring and spending freeze, according to the official and the source.
Those steps have left some employees uneasy.

Top Voice Of America officials resign as Trump appointee takes charge
The director of the Voice of America and her top deputy resigned Monday following the recent Senate confirmation of the Trump administration's pick to oversee all U.S. government broadcasting.
Director Amanda Bennett and Sandy Sugawara, deputy VOA director, notified Michael Pack, the new chief executive officer for the U.S. Agency for Global Media, of the resignations Monday, a VOA spokeswoman said. The agency is the umbrella organization that oversees VOA.
Mr. Pack, a conservative documentary filmmaker, "has the right to replace us with his own VOA leadership," the two said in a letter also posted on Twitter. "We depart with the gratitude and joy that has marked our time together, with a dedication to our mission and admiration for each one of you."
VOA has come under fire from senior Trump administration officials and outside critics for its what they say is its often "soft news" approach to official U.S. broadcasts.
In April, the White House issued an unusual attack on VOA, accusing the global broadcaster of misusing taxpayer money in its operations. The VOA "too often speaks for America's adversaries - not its citizens," the White House said.

Voice of America director, deputy resign amid Trump clash
The director of Voice of America and her deputy resigned Monday following recent clashes with the Trump administration that have sparked fears about the independence of the U.S. government-funded news organization.
Amanda Bennett and Deputy Director Sandy Sugawara announced they were leaving the organization as Trump ally and conservative filmmaker Michael Pack takes over leadership of the agency that oversees VOA.
Bennett and Sugawara told the staff in an email obtained by The Associated Press that Pack should be able to choose the leadership of the organization, which was created to promote democracy and American values abroad.

CDC email tells staff to shun Greta Van Susteren and Voice of America
The media relations department at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told communications staff to ignore inquiries from journalists at Voice of America. Michawn Rich, a Department of Agriculture spokesperson who was detailed to the CDC to help with coronavirus coverage, noted in an April 30 "rundown" email for a new employee that they don't send media requests from "Greta Van Susteren or anyone affiliated with Voice of America" to the Department of Health and Human Services or Office of the Vice President. "NOTE: as a rule, do not send up requests for Greta Van Susteren or anyone affiliated with Voice of America," the email states. The email also included a link to a story in the White House's evening newsletter on April 10, accusing VOA, a U.S.-funded but independent news organization, of spending taxpayer dollars to "Promote Foreign Propaganda." "Voice of America is a global news network funded by American taxpayers. It spends about $200 million each year on its mission to 'tell America's story' and "present the policies of the United States clearly and effectively" to people around the globe," the email said. "Today, however, VOA too often speaks for America's adversaries - not its citizens. The Coronavirus pandemic is no exception. Secrecy from the Communist Party of China allowed the deadly virus to spread across the world."
This email, along with three others, was released on Friday in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by the Knight Institute, an independent group dedicated to expanding freedom of the president. Anna Diakun, staff attorney of the Knight First Amendment Institute, told VOA, "We brought this lawsuit because we were concerned about the politicization of public health messaging and we thought it was critical for the public to know if and how the administration was stage-managing CDC communications, so that the public was able to judge for themselves the accuracy of any statements." Van Susteren said her inclusion on the blacklist was "stunning," given that no one at either the CDC or White House had complained about her reporting. "The thing that's stunning to me is that it's VOA and I'm specifically named, and nobody at the CDC, or the White House, or anyplace else has ever said that my reporting on the coronavirus or anything else has been unfair or inaccurate," Van Susteren told VOA, adding that it was "absurd to blackball a person." VOA Director Amanda Bennett also denounced the revealed policy saying that they were "shocked" and that it was "troubling." President Trump and the White House have criticized the outlet over its coverage of the coronavirus outbreak. The Senate confirmed conservative activist and filmmaker Michael Pack earlier this month to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA. The CDC and the White House did not respond to requests for comment.

Stunning explosion of cheers from Iran and China dissidents over booting of Obama holdovers at Voice of America
President Trump was happy as heck at the news that Michael Pack, his choice for new director at the Voice of America, finally got confirmed by the Senate. It came as a sort of miracle, given the dirty, protracted battle from the Deep State's Obama holdovers to keep him out. It was so underhanded that it involved a last-ditch Kavanaugh-style bid to smear Pack as corrupt if for nothing else than to delay his Senate confirmation to eternity. It was the Deep State at its worst, and it failed. Now, what's probably the last solid Obama bastion of Deep State government has toppled.

Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words
A new documentary captures Justice Thomas telling his own remarkable story.
Before there was Brett Kavanaugh, there was Clarence Thomas. Many who watched or participated in the grotesque circus that was the Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearings no doubt were unaware of, or had forgotten, the ugly spectacle that was Thomas' confirmation hearings in 1991. As a black conservative, Thomas drew (and continues to draw) the vicious wrath of racist Democrats who reserve a special enmity for minorities that dare stray from the leftist plantation. Then as now, the Democrats waged their politics of personal destruction, and then as now a good man with impeccable legal credentials was demonized by an uncorroborated allegation of sexual harassment shored up by the full force of the leftist smear machine. A riveting new documentary revisits the Clarence Thomas–Anita Hill controversy as part of a look at the Supreme Court Justice's amazing life journey. Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words, produced by Michael Pack of Manifold Productions, aired earlier this week on PBS, of all places, and is still available here for free through June 2. Don't miss it. The producers interviewed Thomas and his wife Virginia for over 30 hours about his life, the law, and his legacy. As the movie's website states, the documentary proceeds chronologically, combining Justice Thomas' first person account with a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations. Unscripted and without narration, the documentary takes the viewer through this complex and often painful life, dealing with race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience. In his rich, sonorous voice, Thomas, the second black American to serve on the Court and, at 28 years, the longest-serving Justice, tells his life story beginning with his birth in tiny Pin Point, Georgia in 1948. Descended from West African slaves and born into rock-bottom poverty, Thomas later was raised by his grandparents in Savannah. His stern grandfather, "the greatest man I have ever known," believed firmly in hard work and even more firmly in the education he never had, the lack of which he blamed for his inability to rise above his station in life. He impressed upon his grandchildren the importance of committing themselves to school. He told Thomas and his brother that they would attend class every day, even when sick, and even if they were dead he would take their bodies to school for three more days "to make sure we weren't faking."
Educated by supportive Catholic nuns and feeling a calling to the priesthood, Thomas entered the seminary and excelled academically but ultimately dropped out after a fellow seminarian's hateful response to the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. confirmed for Thomas that the church was not doing enough to combat racism. Abandoning the seminary was unacceptable to his grandfather, who told Thomas in no uncertain terms that he was on his own now. Thomas goes on in the documentary to describe how the subsequent assassination of Robert Kennedy, combined with the blows from MLK's murder and his grandfather's rejection, pushed him into an angry downward spiral that led to his involvement with black radical activists (interestingly, Thomas' brother, who had served in the Vietnam War, felt that Thomas and his fellow radicals should leave the country if they hated it so much). The rest of Clarence's story is just as compelling: his rejection of radicalism, his graduation from Yale Law School, his ultimate drift toward support for Ronald Reagan (thus becoming a target for Democrats and their "Uncle Tom" smears), his grandfather's death, his appointment as a Circuit Court judge under President GWH Bush, and then, of course, his nomination as a Supreme Court Justice and the relentless attacks that followed - even before Anita Hill's allegation of sexual harassment ignited a firestorm. By refusing to conform to Democrat expectations, he was the wrong kind of black man and therefore had to be destroyed, as Thomas says in the documentary.

Trump threatens to shut down Congress to get his nominees approved to fight coronavirus
It's just a concerted effort to make life difficult,' Trump said of both the U.S. House and Senate.
President Trump said Wednesday that he would use what he called his "constitutional authority" to formally shut down Congress to get his nominees approved to help fight the coronavirus.
"It is absolutely essential that the key positions in relevant federal agencies are fully staffed, and we're not allowing that to take place through our Congress," Trump said during a coronavirus task force press conference. "They're just not giving it to us … It's a very unfair system."
Both chambers are now on recess at least through the end of the month. Trump slammed the Democrat-held House and the Republican-held Senate for refusing to approve key administration posts, saying the leaders would help the country more quickly get out of the coronavirus crisis.
"It takes days and days and there's no time left," Trump said of his nominees getting stuck in congressional committees, some in limbo for years. "It's just a concerted effort to make life difficult … Many are nominated for vacancies that must be filled to assist with the coronavirus crisis and the resulting economic challenges."
He said the congressional rule of a "pro forma" session, when the body is technically "in session," but members have left town, is creating a "roadblock" to getting nominees approved to key posts that could help fight the coronavirus pandemic.
"The Senate has left Washington until at least May 4.," Trump said. "The Constitution provides a mechanism for the president to fill positions in such circumstances, the 'recess appointment,' it's called. The Senate's practice of gaveling into so-called 'pro forma sessions' where no one is even there has prevented me from using the constitutional authority that we're given under the recess provisions. The Senate should either fulfill it's duty and vote on my nominees or it should formally adjourn so that I can make recess appointments."
Trump said the languishing nominees included the Director of National Intelligence, two members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, the assistant secretary of Treasury for U.S. financial markets, and the under secretary of agriculture for administering food security programs.
"I've read over the couple years, 'Well, I didn't fill positions.' I don't fill positions-in some cases we don't need the position, and I'm all for that," Trump said. "But in many cases, you do but we can't get them approved by the Democrats. They won't release them."
Trump said one of his additional key nominees that hasn't been approved is Michael Pack, who was nominated in June 2018 to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees the Voice of America and other taxpayer-funded media outlets.
The White House Thursday took the extraordinary step of publicly rebuking Voice of America, the government-funded media outlet with a wide foreign audience, accusing it of siding with the Chinese government over the coronavirus pandemic.
"If you heard what's coming out of Voice of America, it's disgusting," Trump said Wednesday. "The things they say are disgusting toward our country. And Michael Pack would get in, and he'd do a great job, but he's been waiting now for two years."
Trump said that many of his nominees had been waiting for two and a half years, some even longer than that. He said there are currently 129 nominees awaiting confirmation in the Senate because of "partisan obstruction."
"We'll probably be challenged in court, and we'll see who wins," Trump said. "We needed these people before, but now we really need these people."

Trump Sticks With Pack for Broadcasting Chief
The president re-nominated the conservative filmmaker after Corker, Menendez blocked him last year
President Trump has re-nominated documentary filmmaker Michael Pack to lead the nation's taxpayer-funded global broadcasting operation, which was created to counter propaganda from repressive regimes but critics say has lost its focus and needs reform.
Trump's decision to tap Pack once again for the post in the new Congress demonstrates the president's commitment to bringing new direction to the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which has an annual budget of $680 million and oversees the Voice of America and related media outlets.
Pack, a documentary filmmaker who previously served as a Corporation for Public Broadcasting executive and director of the film and television service of the former U.S. Information Agency, is a senior fellow at the conservative Claremont Institute and its Review of Books.
With conservative Sen. James Risch (R., Idaho ) newly installed as the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, Pack is expected to win confirmation after Sen. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) and former Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) held up the nomination last year.
Corker, who was the Foreign Relations chairman at the time, and Menendez also led an unsuccessful effort late last year to pass a bill designed to diminish the power of the USAGM post before Pack took the helm.
Both efforts were part of intense partisan battle over what reforms are necessary to re-focus the USAGM on its propaganda-countering mission. Conservative critics believe the agency has completely lost its way and in recent years has become nothing more than another liberal-leaning news outlet akin to NBC or CNN, only taxpayer-funded.
Under Pack's direction, liberal critics say they are worried that Trump officials could get too involved with USAGM operations and it could become a megaphone for the administration and pro-Trump propaganda vehicle.
They cite his ties to former White House adviser Steve Bannon as cause for concern. The two worked together on two documentaries, but supporters say Pack would in no way be beholden to Bannon, especially after his failing out with Trump.
Conservative supporters of new leadership at the broadcasting agencies say most of the current top officials, who were appointed by President Obama, and their liberal backers are worried that the coverage will cease to tilt leftward and will no longer highlight and prioritize explicitly anti-Trump coverage.

Corker Bill Aimed at Undermining Trump's Broadcasting Chief Dies
Michael Pack expected to win Senate confirmation early this year
BY: Susan Crabtree
January 3, 2019 3:30 pm
"A group of conservative senators successfully stopped a last-ditch effort to weaken the power of President Trump's choice to lead the nation's taxpayer-funded global broadcasting operation.
The move paves the way for Senate confirmation of Michael Pack, Trump's choice to head the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).
The USAGM, previously called the Broadcasting Board of Governors, oversees the Voice of America and other U.S. taxpayer-funded broadcasting operations countering the propaganda arms of American adversaries such as Russia, Iran, and China.
A bill sponsored by Sens. Bob Menendez (D., N.J.) and former Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.), which critics argued would seriously undermine the incoming head of the USAGM, died on the vine when the previous Congress ended and the 116th Congress convened Thursday afternoon.
A group of conservative senators opposed the late 2018 effort to try to diminish Pack's power even before he started the job. The USAGM, previously the Broadcasting Board of Governors, oversees the Voice of America and related taxpayer-funded media outlets.
At least one conservative senator placed an anonymous hold on the bill preventing it from being attached to any must-pass measures Congress approved in the final weeks of December, several sources told the Washington Free Beacon."
…
"He has argued that the problems plaguing the USAGM have allowed the Russians and other U.S. foes to gain the upper hand in the information-warfare sphere and has pushed for strengthening management's powers, not weakening them.
"We're faced with a misinformation onslaught, and we've got to get this right," he said when releasing his oversight report in late December.
Pack is a documentary filmmaker who previously served as a Corporation for Public Broadcasting executive. More recently, he ran the conservative Claremont Institute and its Review of Books.
Bennett and her supporters on the left cite Pack's ties to White House adviser Steve Bannon as cause for concern. The pair worked together on two documentaries, although colleagues have said Pack has had a much broader role in the conservative movement and would in no way be beholden to Bannon, especially after his falling out with Trump.
The USAGM, which had a $680 million budget for fiscal year 2018, was created more than seven decades ago to counter propaganda from repressive regimes with coverage that promotes freedom and democracy worldwide.
Strategies to pursue that lofty goal without squandering taxpayer dollars have shifted with the agency's changing leadership and has become a matter of extensive partisan debate over the last several years."
