President-elect Donald Trump's choice of Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) as CIA director merits exploring some interesting facts about the congressman.
1. Pompeo, 52, graduated first in his class at West Point in 1986, with a major in mechanical engineering. His Army service included patrolling the Berlin Wall before it came down.
"My generation was the tail end of the Cold War," Pompeo said during a 2014 visit to Kansas State, where he discussed the battle against the Islamic State. He added:
Before that, you had Nazism. This will ultimately be this generation's fight, this battle where radical Islam continues to want to take on the West in fundamental ways, in the same way these other ideologies wanted to do before. I think we're going to be at this for a while. We ought to be vigorous and thoughtful and effective in the way we respond.
In a 2011 profile of soldiers in Congress published by the Association of the United States Army, Pompeo is quoted as saying, "I still remember the first acronym I learned, BLUF: Bottom Line Up Front. I still try to communicate that way. No reason to dance around getting to the point."
2. He continued his education at Harvard Law School after completing his active-duty Army service in 1991, and was an editor at the Harvard Law Review. He worked as a lawyer in Washington for several years, at the powerful law firm Williams & Connolly.
"When he arrived here after graduating first in his class at West Point and serving with distinction as an Army officer, he was bent on going into politics," law professor Mary Ann Glendon recalled in a 2011 interview, continuing:
When he went into business instead, I felt real regret to see yet another young person of great integrity and ability swerve from his original path. But in fact he didn't. Mike waited until he and his wife, Susan, had raised their son and assured a sound financial footing for the family. This past November, he was elected to the U.S. Congress from the 4th District of Kansas.
3. As Professor Glendon said in her interview, Pompeo did not go into politics immediately after his time as a D.C. lawyer. Instead, he returned to his hometown in Orange County, California, and founded a company called Thayer Aerospace with some friends from his West Point days. After serving as Thayer CEO for more than a decade, he sold Thayer and became president of Sentry International, a Wichita-based company that sells oil field equipment.
One of the minor investors in Thayer was Koch Venture Capital. Given the Left's deranged obsession with the Koch brothers as the focus of big-money evil in modern politics, we can expect to hear a great deal about this, even though Pompeo has said their investment was less than 2 percent of Thayer's total funding. There will also be some caterwauling about Koch support for Rep. Pompeo's congressional campaign.
Pompeo wrote an op-ed in 2012 chastising Democrats for "harassing the Koch brothers," specifically on the Keystone XL pipeline issue. "The Democrats' obsession with the Kochs as a political target is, indeed, additional evidence of a truly Nixonian approach to politics," he said.
4. Given this background, it is no surprise that Pomepo serves on both the House Intelligence and House Energy and Commerce committees. He was also appointed to the House Select Benghazi Committee.
5. Perhaps surprisingly, given his business background, Pompeo's net worth is rated below average by various public interest sites - 69 percent below the average member of Congress, according to InsideGov, which pegs his net worth at $345,011.
6. Pompeo was elected to Congress in 2010 on the Tea Party wave and is now serving his third term. He was, at one point, seen as a dark-horse challenger to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) for Speaker of the House. There were also rumors he was considering a Senate run.
"While we have had our share of strong differences - principally on the politicization of the tragedy in Benghazi - I know that he is someone who is willing to listen and engage, both key qualities in a C.I.A. director,"Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), ranking Democrat on House Intelligence Committee, said in praise of Pompeo on Friday morning.

QUESTION: Hello and welcome back to Madison's Notes. I'm your host, Nino Scalia, and we have with us today two very distinguished guests who truly need no introduction: Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo and Ambassador Mary Ann Glendon, the chair of the U.S. Department of State's Commission on Unalienable Rights.
Professor Glendon, Secretary Pompeo, welcome to Madison's Notes.
SECRETARY POMPEO: Great, thank you. Good to be with you.
AMBASSADOR Glendon: Thank you.
QUESTION: Secretary Pompeo, I'd like to begin with you, and I'd like to take us back to July 8th, 2019. On that day, you Announced the establishment of the Department of State's Commission on Unalienable Rights, and to my knowledge, this was unprecedented for a secretary of state to commission such a study of the principles informing our approach to human rights and foreign policy. So tell us, why did you choose to establish this commission?
SECRETARY POMPEO: Nino, I'd say two things. One was I had observed that the central understandings about human rights that had come to be widely adhered to over time, that regime was in crisis and I wanted to see if there were things that the United States couldn't do to right that ship. And then second, I had seen that even in American foreign policy, it was a model that was - it was a bit of a mess because it wasn't - the way the United States approached this problem set with respect to human rights had become unmoored from the American tradition and even a central understanding of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
And so I asked Professor Glendon and some others to join me in trying to identify the principles that made the American rights tradition distinctive and why they mattered, and then second, to place that in the context of the work that we do all around the world and help identify those principles that might begin to resolve this crisis in human rights that I had observed.
QUESTION: Sure. And this commission was not a monolith. Sitting on this commission were men and women representing a wide variety of religious and philosophical backgrounds, certainly with different political opinions.
Professor Glendon, as I mentioned, you served as chair of this commission, so I'm curious, what sort of effect did being able to draw from these different perspectives have on the process of drafting the report and on the final report itself?

On 22 January 2014, the IOR published a report on the progress of the compliance and transparency program.[83] IOR President Ernst von Freyberg commented on the release, stating that "it is very possible to reform an institution like the IOR" and that the Institute has "used the past year to create the system and to analyse our customers for possible irregularities". Von Freyberg also stated much work needs to be done as regards transparency and compliance.[84]
On 7 April 2014, Pope Francis ruled the IOR will stay operative and approved recommendations on the Institute's future, which were drawn up jointly by the papal commissions CRIOR and COSEA, by the IOR's management and by Australian Cardinal George Pell, head of the Vatican's Secretariat for the Economy. The decision was interpreted as a "backing" of the process of reform that had been intensified under Pope Francis and von Freyberg.[85] The IOR itself stated that the Pope's decision "represents a powerful endorsement of our very mission and the hard work accomplished over the past 12 months."[86] Von Freyberg stepped down in July as head of the IOR and Pope Francis named Jean-Baptiste de Franssu to replace him.[87]
In September 2014, the Cardinals' Commission of the IOR appointed Mauricio Larraín (Chile) and Carlo Salvatori (Italy) as members to the IOR Board of Superintendence. Other members included Jean-Baptiste de Franssu (France), President of the Board, Clemens Boersig (Germany), Mary Ann Glendon (USA) and Michael Hintze (UK). In addition to these six lay members of the Board, Monsignor Alfred Xuereb, Secretary-General of the Secretariat for the Economy, served as its non-voting Secretary.[88] From January 2017 additional members added to the board were: Scott C. Malpass (USA), es:Javier Marín Romano (Spain), and Georg Freiherr von Boeselager (Germany).[89]

Kissinger in conclave at Vatican

"Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is staying at the Vatican's Domus Sanctae Marthae - residence of the conclave cardinals who elected Pope Benedict - while he participates in a Holy See seminar on charity and justice.
Catholic News Service reports that Mary Ann Glendon, a US law professor and president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, invited Kissinger to speak at the academy's 27 April - 1 May plenary session.
The academy, which advises the Vatican on social issues, was to focus on "Charity and Justice in the Relations Among Peoples and Nations."
The meeting was to be the last in a series - held over the past 13 years - focusing on economic, social and legal issues tied to the theme of globalisation.
Glendon told reporters that Kissinger was invited after he was included on an academy members' list of "experts, some with scholarly expertise, some with practical experience with the problems" the academy faces.
The academy listens to the experts "the way, let's say, a congressional committee sometimes hears testimony," she said.
"We are not looking for guidance from people who come before us to testify," but "we do want the benefit of the great expertise and experience" the guests can offer, she said.
Dr Glendon said Kissinger, like the other guest speakers and experts, waived his usual speaking fee and expressed interest in participating in the meeting, not simply stopping by to give a speech.
And, she said, he accepted the invitation the Vatican extends to guest speakers to stay within the Vatican walls in the comfortable, but by no means deluxe, Domus Sanctae Marthae.
Kissinger, the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize winner, was scheduled to speak 28 April on "Current International Trends and World Peace.""

VATICAN CITY (CNS) - Pope Benedict XVI does not have a foreign affairs advisory board, and he has not asked former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to become one of his advisers, the Vatican spokesman said.
Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi said it is true that Kissinger met privately with the pope Sept. 28 and that Mary Ann Glendon, a U.S. law professor and president of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, has invited Kissinger to speak to the academy at the Vatican in late April.
"Those are the only two concrete facts," Father Lombardi told Catholic News Service.
Articles in Italian and U.S. newspapers reporting that the pope had asked Kissinger to become an adviser or consultant "are without any foundation," he said Dec. 4.
A New York-based correspondent for the Italian newspaper La Stampa wrote Nov. 4 that Kissinger had told an "important member of the Italian government" of the papal offer and that "a diplomatic source" at the Vatican had confirmed that "an important dialogue is under way" between the pope and Kissinger.
The rumor has been circulating in newspapers and on the Internet since the newspaper article was published."

United Nations to Declare Abortion and Assisted Suicide a 'Universal Human Right'
The United Nations Human Rights Committee drafted a memo saying that abortion and physician-assisted suicide should be universal human rights.
The memo, or "general comment" on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, calls for abortion to be decriminalized everywhere. Nations and states should "not introduce new barriers and should remove existing barriers [to abortion] ... including barriers caused as a result of the exercise of conscientious objection by individual medical providers," it said, Crux Now reported Thursday.
The committee that put forward the draft is headed by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, according to Crux. Aborting an unborn baby was illegal in Chile until August 2017 when the nation's lawmakers ruled to decriminalize abortion in the cases of rape, fatal fetal abnormalities and when the mother's life is in danger.
Young people should have access to contraception as well as guaranteed access to post-abortion health care "in all circumstances, and on a confidential basis," the draft also said, Crux reported. Stigma against abortion should also be discouraged, the draft noted.
The U.N. Human Rights Committee successfully ordered the Irish government to pay Siobhan Whelan roughly $34,000 and provide her with psychological treatment in November 2017 to compensate for Whelan's travel expenses in order to obtain an abortion. Whelan had traveled from Ireland, where abortion was illegal at the time, to the U.K. for the procedure. Whelan was the second woman compensated post-abortion on orders from the UN.
A Harvard professor and human rights in international law specialist, Mary Ann Glendon, pushed back against the draft's proposals. "First of all, the UN Human Rights Committee has no power to create human rights," said Glendon, according to Crux.
The committee's assertion that abortion is a "fundamental human right, and its preposterous claim that abortion rights are derived from the right to life ... show how susceptible UN bodies are to lobbying by interest groups that would like to see their agenda items recognized as universal rights," Glendon added.
