"Bomb Iran" (or "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran") is the name of several parodies of the Regents' 1961 song "Barbara Ann," originally written by Fred Fassert and popularized in a "party" cover version by the Beach Boys in 1965. And others since.

The most popular of the parodies was recorded by Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1980.

"Bomb Iran" gained a resurgence in notoriety in 2007 during (No Name's] 2008 presidential campaign, as well as during the 2025 US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and the 2026 Iran conflict.

Origins

In reaction to the Iran hostage crisis which began in November 1979, the first publicly known version of this parody was recorded by a group called "the Baritone Dwarfs" and aired on the radio in Boston in December 1979.

A second version, with different lyrics, aired on KIXS-FM (now KGSR) in Killeen, Texas (which broadcasts to the military institution Fort Hood) for a single weekend in January 1980. At least five more "Bomb Iran" songs were written and copyrighted in 1980. The lyrics have the line "Went to a mosque, gonna throw some rocks…Tell the Ayatollah…'Gonna put you in a box!'"- which refers to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and is prophetic about his successor Ali Khamenei.

In addition to these parodies, another version of "Bomb Iran" was written by radio personalities Dana Michaels and Tom Rivers. This version of the song was produced by Rivers and performed by Michaels (guitar and vocals), Ernie Norris (guitar and vocals), John Rode (guitar and vocals), Mark Lewis (vocals), and Tony Blake (vocals), who called themselves the "Not Current in This Time Zone Singers." It was first aired on KFQD Radio (where Rivers was program director) in Anchorage, Alaska on April 25, 1980, immediately after an attempt to rescue the American hostages in Tehran failed. Rivers later wrote in Billboard Magazine, "the phones lit up like a Christmas tree. We logged more than 20,000 calls in three days…and they were 97 percent positive."

Because of the song's popularity in Australia and New Zealand, EMI Records called Rivers to discuss a possible recording contract and tour.

Another version of "Bomb Iran" was recorded in 1980 by a group called "J.C. & the B-1 Bombers."

Vince Vance & the Valiants

The most popular version of "Bomb Iran" was recorded by Vince Vance & the Valiants in 1980. The single was popular and frequently requested on the radio, but never charted because it lacked distribution and the rights to the music were not properly acquired. The song threatening Iran with nuclear annihilation also provoked retaliatory death threats and other altercations against the lead singer. However, after some legal wrangling, the single was finally re-released by Paid Records in September 1980. After its second release, the song reached number 101 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. The 1980 recording, along with a 1987 remix, was eventually included in the band's album I Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans, released in 1996.

One year after the original single release, in 1981, the band released another parody on the same topic called "Nuke Iran," to the tune of Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl."

In 2005, they created a similarly themed parody of the Coasters' song "Yakety Yak", this time with Iraq as the target, called "Yakety Yak (Bomb Iraq)."

Foreshadowing this, The Rush Limbaugh Show in 1990 featured a parody of "Barbara Ann" called "Bomb Iraq" following the start of the Gulf War.

[No Name] controversy

The parody lived on and became political fodder when, on April 17, 2007, in Senator [No Name's] (R-AZ) campaign for the 2008 presidential election, at an appearance in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, he responded to an audience question about military action against Iran by referring to "that old Beach Boys song, 'Bomb Iran'", then singing the parody chorus, "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, anyway, ah …" [No Name] later claimed he was only joking, but his opponents used his comments against him throughout the 2008 campaign.

Mysterious Rings Around Space Rock Might Be Carved by a Secret Moon

The secret lives of minor planets may be even more complex and fascinating than we thought.

Scientists have discovered that a pair of gossamer rings circling an asteroid-like chunk of rock in the cold reaches of space out past Jupiter are likely being shepherded by a tiny, unseen moonlet.

The rock is named Chariklo, a type of minor planet known as a centaur - an asteroid-like body that orbits the Sun in the space between Jupiter and Neptune (rather than between Jupiter and Mars, where the asteroid belt spans).

Chariklo, just 250 kilometers (155 miles) in diameter, is the only known centaur or asteroid with rings - and it sports not one, but two.

How asteroids maintain rings is not known. But, led by astronomer Amanda Sickafoose of the Planetary Science Institute, a pair of scientists has conducted simulations and found that moonlets are a plausible explanation.

"Rings around minor planets have only been recently discovered, and only a small number of such systems are currently known," Sickafoose says.

"There has been significant research into the dazzling rings around the giant planets; however, the mechanisms of ring formation and evolution around small objects are not well understood. We've shown that one of the possibilities for thin rings to exist around small bodies is that they are being sculpted by a small satellite."

Rings in the Solar System aren't uncommon, actually. Half the planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) have known rings, and some dwarf planets do too. They usually consist of small dust and ice grains that circle a body's equator, bound in gravitational orbit, like a deconstructed moon.

We are finding an increasing number of asteroids that have moons, so minor planets with small rings aren't the weirdest things imaginable. But two very distinctly defined rings, as Chariklo has, are interesting.

Sickafoose and her colleague, computer scientist Mark Lewis of Trinity University, wanted to find out what keeps the rings so tidy.

They conducted a series of N-body simulations using modified code originally designed to understand Saturn's rings, and altered different parameters to try to replicate the Chariklo system.

The researchers found that a single tiny moon as small as 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter can maintain gossamer rings similar to those seen circling Chariklo, shaping them and keeping a gap between them in a similar fashion to Saturn's shepherd moons. In fact, such a moon might even be necessary.

"Planetary rings will naturally spread or disperse over time. Chariklo exhibits two thin rings, a few kilometers in width. In order for the rings to stay this thin, there needs to be a mechanism to confine the material and prevent it from dispersing," Sickafoose says.

"We actually show this in the paper by simulating a Chariklo-like ring system that does not have a satellite, and we find that the width of the rings increases linearly with time. This is unlike the situation when there is a satellite in resonance with the ring material, which acts to confine the rings into the kilometer-sized widths that are observed."

Interestingly, the two rings are very close to a distance from Chariklo known as the Roche limit. That's the critical distance at which the rings should start clumping together under gravity and forming moons themselves. However, a small moon can keep a ring perturbed enough that it remains a ring. So that's another factor that could be in favor of a moonlet.

Unfortunately, given how small and far away Chariklo is, and how much smaller any moon must be, we won't be able to get any pictures of such a moon without sending out a mission to get a bit closer. There may also be some indirect way of detecting whether or not there's a moon orbiting Chariklo and keeping its rings in check.

It's also not clear what the rings are made of. Ice probably accounts for quite a substantial proportion, but we don't know how big the particles are or how they interact. Finding out these details will help figure out what, exactly, is going on with this fascinating object.

The United States defence officials reportedly revealed that they tested a hypersonic missile that President Donald Trump has long touted as a 'super-duper' new military weapon. According to an international media outlet, a senior defence official called the testing a 'success' and added that the missile flew 17 times faster than the speed of sound. The official also informed that test was initially tested back in March over the Pacific Ocean, however, very little additional information was revealed.

According to reports, the US President has taken a special interest in the missile and he even oft-cited the test that the Pentagon had described being as 'successful'. While Donald Trump has repeatedly made comments about a supersonic missile that is faster than any other missile, the defence official reportedly said that missiles being developed by the United States will not be nuclear-capable. Even with the fastest missile, it was also noted that the American effort still lags behind those of Moscow and Beijing's already fielded weapons systems.

US plans to conduct 40 flight test
As per reports, the hypersonic missiles are traditionally defined as missiles that travel at least five times the speed of sound, which is more than 3,800 miles per hour. Given the tremendous speed and ability to manoeuvre in the atmospheres, the hypersonic missiles are also seen as particularly hard to defend against using conventional missile defence systems. While speaking to the media outlet, the official said that trying to defend against a hypersonic vehicle becomes very difficult to deal with as high speed and uncertainty in-flight trajectory are combined together.

The US military is still years away from fielding a hypersonic weapon, however, the officials have targeted to complete the project by 2023. Although, back in June Department of Defence Director Research and Engineering for Modernization, Mark Lewis reportedly said that the US is looking to conduct its first test flights of completed hypersonic prototype weapons by 2025 with deployable weapons by the second half of the decade. Furthermore, as per reports, the US Defence Department plans to carry out at least 40 flight test of hypersonic mission over the Pacific Ocean in the next four years.

Middle East Eye reMarked that Sunday Telegraph's campaign coincided with efforts by the newspaper owners, David and Frederick Barclay, battling for ownership of three five-star Mayfair hotels Claridge's, The Berkeley and The Connaught.[55] Qatari royal Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al-Thani was the Barclay brothers' opponent, and he ultimately prevailed when in April 2015 the Qatar Investment Authority adjudicated the purchase of the three London hotels.[54]

The British newspaper has denied any allegation of editorial interference by David and Sir Frederick Barclay. Analogously, Qatar has denied the Telegraph's claims. Qatar stated that being a Muslim investment authority does not necessarily mean they support ISIL. Being a Muslim country they do not have to harbor western propaganda to be tagged as not ISIL supporters.[54]

However, shortly after, concerns on Qatar's support to extremism and ISIL were voiced at a public event. During a March 2015 conference hosted by the United States Institute of Peace on the occasion of the official visit to the US of the Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement leader, Tahir el-Faki, Qatar's alleged support of extremism was explored by representatives of the intel community who mentioned several reports suggesting that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir was hosting ISIS training camps in Darfur supported by the Gulf country.[56][57] An 11 February 2015 piece posted by Sudan quoted a Minni Minawi official denouncing Qatar's support to extremism in the country channeled through Qatar Charity, Qatar's largest NGO, and especially directed at "building housing complexes in remote and isolated areas to harbor and train extremist groups."[57]

Harrods boycott
London's department store Harrods faced a boycott campaign in October 2014 against QIA's subsidiary, Qatar Holding, which purchased Harrods in 2010.[58] The initiative, led by London-based media lawyer Mark Lewis and extensively promoted by the Sunday Telegraph, intended to bring Qatar's role in terror finance to the public's attention.[59]

Mr Lewis was quoted by the Telegraph as saying: "We can stand back and do nothing, but when we do, we are paying for that terror ... People need to know where their money is going." The solicitor added that "the scale of its commercial holdings is such that most of us do not even realise that we are buying into its terrorist operations."[59] The campaign attracted public attention and was endorsed by a number of public figures in the UK.[59]

The Qatar Awareness Coalition
On 27 October 2014 the Qatar Awareness Coalition (QAC), a group of high-profile individuals affiliated with American newspapers, platforms specialized on counterterrorism and private companies seeking to "raise awareness of Qatar and their activities around terror, genocide, and transnational organized crime - including slavery and narcotics", addressed a public letter to Harvey and Bob Weinstein, the founders of Miramax Films.[60][61][62]

As mentioned above, Miramax is largely owned by the Qatar Investment Authority; yet in December 2013, Miramax and the Weinstein Company signed a 20-year deal for future cooperation. The QAC signatories claimed that the deal "reunited the company with its founders", and thereby united "the Weinstein brothers, Miramax, and Qatar - a prolific state sponsor of terrorism across North Africa and the Middle East - in one corporate entity."[62]

The purpose of the initiative was to sensitize Harvey and Bob Weinstein as well as the public to the "conflict of interest" supposedly occurring when "terrorist financing commingles with Hollywood."[62]

Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB)
Qatar Investment Authority's affiliation with Qatar Islamic Bank (16.67%) raises concerns about the extent to which the sovereign wealth fund's may be or have been involved in some of the bank's disputable - if not controversial - activities.

In a September 2015 piece, the Consortium Against Terrorist Finance (CATF) discussed the Sharia-compliant financial giant's correspondents and posited that several QIB's correspondents "have controversial histories of affiliation with or support of terrorist or extremist activities".[63]

What is UK Lawyers for Israel's relationship to the Israeli government?

The group UK Lawyers for Israel is one of the quietest yet most influential Israel lobby actors currently operating in Britain.

Since 2011, it has closely monitored the Palestine solidarity movement and worked to repress it, often with significant impact.

The 'lawfare' organisation has especially targeted organisations promoting the Palestinian-initiated Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) - from academics to students unions, architects to local councils - by lodging complaints with regulatory bodies and sending letters threatening legal action.

It has even obstructed the work of charities such as Medical Aid for Palestinians and War on Want, working in close collaboration with the US-based Lawfare Project to do so.

But where did UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) come from and who is behind it?

The UKLFI website describes the organisation as 'a voluntary organisation of lawyers who support Israel using their legal skills'.

Companies House records that UKLFI was first registered in in October 2010, originally under the name 'Action 4 Peace Limited'. In September 2016, UKLFI also registered as a charity which has a separate website but most of the same patrons.

These 'eminent patrons' include a host of pro-Israel British peers such as Lord Carlile, Baroness Deech, Lord Howard, Lord Pannick, Lady Cosgrove, Lord Trimble and Lord Young of Graffham.

The organisation's registered address is that of Three Stone Chambers, where Jonathan Turner - UKLFI chief executive and one of its listed directors - works as a commercial barrister. Turner was previously head of the UK Zionist Federation's legal division.

Other trustees include Harvey Rose and Alan Melkman, respectively a former chair and volunteer with the Zionist Federation; Adam Levin, also a registered trustee of the neoconservative Henry Jackson Society; and Helene Pines Richman, a Conservative Party councillor in Barnet.

Cementing these right wing credentials, Mark Lewis - a UKLFI director until he moved to Israel late last year - was also involved in the relaunch of Herut UK which espouses revisionist Zionist ideas like those of Vladimir Jabotinsky.

Most interestingly, UKLFI appears to have - at the very least - an informal working relationship with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

For example, in January 2017 the group hosted a talk by the former director general of the MFA. But this relationship has been apparent since its very early days. In January 2013, it gave a platform to Arthur Lenk of the MFA's legal division. As far back as June 2012, UKLFI co-hosted a two-day seminar with the MFA and the Israeli Embassy in London.

In fact, UKLFI's connection to the MFA may go back right to the start. Curiously, there is a page on the official MFA website dated May 2011 dedicated solely to announcing the creation of UKLFI.
