Dutch government declares water shortage
The Dutch government declared a national water shortage Wednesday caused by the hot, dry summer that is parching much of Europe, and formed a national team to draw up measures to manage supplies, while asking the public to also chip in with savings.
"The water shortage is already having a negative effect on shipping and agriculture in particular," said Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Mark Harbers.

Dutch Minister Resigns After Serious Migrant Crimes Hidden from Data
The Dutch immigration minister has stepped down following outcry over a government migrant crime report which hid serious migrant crimes including rape and murder under the category of "other".
Resigning from his position on Tuesday, Mark Harbers stressed that no "deliberate concealment" of the figures had taken place, but said he took "full responsibility" for having "misinformed" the Dutch Parliament with regards to the report.
The Ministry of Justice document, which recorded crimes in which asylum seekers were the suspects, listed the number of various misdemeanours, such as shoplifting and pickpocketing while failing to identify much more serious offences like murder, child abuse, and rape as these were simply lumped together under the heading "other".
According to the Telegraaf, which revealed the omissions last week, this category covered around 1,000 cases including 79 alleged sexual offences, 51 serious assaults, and 31 cases of attempted murder or manslaughter.
The statistics showed asylum seekers from safe countries such as Morocco and Algeria were suspects in almost half of the 4,600 incidents recorded in the report, which was released in the name of "full transparency", according to Harbers, who had said that "only by providing [such] insight can there be support for the reception of refugees".
Harbers' departure came after there was serious criticism of the report in the press and from politicians including the populist Freedom Party leader, Geert Wilders, who described the Justice Ministry of having acted like "a mafia gang" in how they presented the figures.
Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte posted on social media to express sadness over the resignation, tweeting: "Politics can be tough. Respect for State Secretary Harbers' decision to resign... But it is incredibly unfortunate that the cabinet must say goodbye to such a talented and committed liberal."
The resignation was described in local media as a "heavy blow" to the ruling VVD party, which already this year faced a major setback when the Eurosceptic, anti-mass immigration Forum for Democracy party went from zero seats to becoming the largest force in the Dutch senate at provincial elections in March.

Italy's Salvini Preparing Legal Action Against Migrant Ferry NGOs
Italy's interior minister Matteo Salvini said Sunday he was gathering legal evidence against the crew of a Dutch-flagged migrant ferry as calls grow for 47 migrants to be allowed to land.
"We have concrete elements to declare that the captain and crew of the Sea Watch 3 have put the lives of those on board at risk by disobeying precise directions days ago to disembark them in the nearest port, not Italy!" Salvini said.
"The evidence will be handed to the judicial authorities," he said, accusing captain and crew of "a crime and a clear desire to use these immigrants in a political battle".
Salvini has refused to open the ports to the mainly sub-Saharan African migrants picked up in the Mediterranean over a week ago, saying the ship had had a chance to make port as it sailed through Libyan, Tunisian, and Maltese waters.
"The interior minister is gathering elements to evaluate whether to press charges against the entire Sea Watch crew for favouring illegal immigration," the ministry said.
Members of parliament who had been refused permission by the ministry to board the Sea Watch 3 made their own way onto the vessel which has taken shelter from bad weather off the coast of Sicily.
"We will verify the situation on board and we continue to ask that those shipwrecked and the crew be allowed to disembark in line with international law," left-wing member of parliament Nicola Fratoianni said.
Rights group Mediterranea said the members of parliament would be "checking the psychological and physical state" of the migrants, as well as gathering testimony of the violence they suffered in Libya.
Save the Children and other aid agencies have appealed to Italy to allow at least the 13 minors on board to land.
Salvini has insisted the Netherlands or Germany take responsibility for the vessel, which is run by the German NGO Sea Watch.
Dutch Migration Minister Mark Harbers said Saturday his country "was not obligated" to find a solution, because the Sea Watch 3 had acted "of its own initiative".
Migrants collected by ships have frequently been left in limbo since Italy's anti-immigration government began turning them away last summer.

Dutch farmers violently protest job-destroying climate change policy
https://thecountersignal.com/dutch-farmers-protest-climate-change-policy/
Dutch farmers are fighting for their very livelihoods, taking to the streets over a climate change policy that will cap nitrogen emissions and lead to mass job loss.
Video shows several farmers on the streets attacking police and emergency vehicles with sledgehammers while others chase the vehicles down and launch kicks against the windows.
In another video, farmers, who brought their own tractors, can be seen outside the Minister for Nitrogen and Nature policy's house spraying what appears to be manure on the house and police vehicles while other protesters attempt to flip a car.
According to Bloomberg, yesterday, several farmers also brought their cows to parliament to protest the policy, going so far as threatening to slaughter them on the spot.
"If the nitrogen measures are adopted, one of these two ladies [cows] will not go home but will receive a one-way ticket to the slaughterhouse," farmer Koos Cromwijk told Dutch news agency ANP outside parliament.
The policy in question will require Dutch businesses to reduce nitrogen emissions nationwide by 50% and up to 95% in some provinces by 2030, with cows and fertilizers being significant contributors.
"The honest message ... is that not all farmers can continue their business," a government statement reads.
The agriculture industry isn't the only one being targeted, though - aviation has also come under fire.
According to Climate Change News, by the end of 2023, Schipol airport, one of the busiest in Europe, will be forced to limit annual flights to accommodate just 440,000 passengers (12% less than the number of flights in 2019).
"This is a difficult message for the aviation sector that is still recovering from the far-reaching consequences of the coronavirus pandemic," said transport minister Mark Harbers.
Climate change activists are, of course, thrilled by the developments, with Greenpeace calling the cap on airport traffic a "historic breakthrough."
"It is good that the Cabinet realizes that Schiphol has, for years, been flying beyond all boundaries when it comes to noise, nitrogen, ultrafine particles and the climate," Greenpeace activist Dewi Zloch said in a statement.
