Q: How do you train a young Australian to swim faster? A: Put a crocodile in the pool
SWIMMING coach in Darwin has discarded modern training methods and motivational techniques to get his young pupils to swim faster. He simply puts a crocodile in the pool with them.
Mark Davies, from the city's aptly-named Casuarina Crocs Swimming Club has regularly used a live crocodile to motivate his swimming squad - and is delighted with the results.
He said: "The thought of something chasing them down the pool certainly improves the speeds of my swimmers."
Before being lowered into the water, the 6ft-long, saltwater crocodile's jaw is bound up with sticky tape and its claws are clipped to prevent it mauling any of the swimmers.
Mr Davies said: "The children can see the croc under the water, they know it's around.
"Soon they learn to associate the pool with the crocodile, so their lap times remain good even when the croc is no longer in there with them."
