Dear Chair Brett Guthrie and Ranking Member Pallone:
We request a hearing with the full committee or relevant subcommittee to address the issue of excessively bright automotive headlights and their negative impact on driver and pedestrian safety. We share the concerns that many of our constituents have brought to us that automotive headlights are often excessively bright, endangering drivers and pedestrians navigating roads.
Reports from 2001 and 2008 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) demonstrate both the significant impact excessively bright headlights have on safety as well as the relevance this issue has for millions of people. Although NHTSA's 2022 final rule allows adaptive driving beams in new vehicles, more needs to be done to ensure that there are enforceable standards for the brightness and glare of modern headlights. Since these reports, the situation has only gotten worse.
We are concerned that NHTSA has failed to set a maximum upper limit on vehicle headlamp intensity and that further inaction is harming public safety. In the interest of improving health and safety for all Americans that use our roads, we request this hearing as a means of creating a safer driving environment for all. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

During his reporting, Rogers said, he never really found anyone disputing safety concerns tied to headlight glare. While he was often pointed to an IIHS study finding a 19 percent reduction in crashes for cars that have good safety ratings for their headlights, he added, it's really hard to track whether or not someone else got into a crash after being blinded by another driver's headlights. "Without that strict measurement of how dangerous car headlight brightness is, it seems that NHTSA is a little stuck and a little unsure about how to fix it," he said.

Driver safety is just one aspect of the problem. The other has to do with people sharing the roads - pedestrians and cyclists. The number of people killed by cars while walking has risen precipitously in the US in the last decade: According to a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), pedestrian deaths are up 48 percent from 2014. Another GHSA report found that in 2022, "approximately three-quarters (77%) of pedestrians killed in fatal crashes were struck at night."

In 2002, when archbishop of Sydney, Pell briefly stepped down while facing allegations that he had sexually abused a 12-year-old boy 40 years previously. A church investigation found insufficient evidence to corroborate the accusation.

Later he was accused of failing to act against paedophile priests in Victoria in the 1970s and 80s and gave evidence three times before Australia's royal commission into institutional responses into child sexual abuse between 2014 and 2016. In its final report, the commission stated that "by 1973 Cardinal Pell was not only conscious of child sexual abuse by clergy but that he also had considered measures of avoiding situations which might provoke gossip about it".

Peppa Pig voice actress Harley Bird to step down after 13 years

London (CNN)The actress who has been delighting toddlers as the voice of Peppa Pig for more than a decade is hanging up her puddle-jumping boots and stepping down from the role.

Harley Bird, 18, has played television's bossiest piglet in the children's cartoon for 13 years. In 2011, she won a BAFTA award for her work on the show.
Bird will be replaced by 9-year-old Amelie Bea Smith, who will appear in English-speaking episodes of the show from February, studio Entertainment One confirmed in a statement on Friday.
The internet is going hog wild over Peppa Pig.

"We're delighted to welcome Amelie to the Peppa Pig voice cast and confident that she will continue the strong legacy of the previous Peppa voice actors," co-creators Neville Astley and Mark Baker said in a statement.
Smith's agent, Mark Jermin, said the 9-year-old was "thrilled" to be taking over the role.

"Amelie has been a huge fan of the show since she was little, so voicing the title role is like a dream come true and she's thrilled to become part of the voice cast," Jermin added.


Bird, who is the longest-standing voice of Peppa, has voiced 185 episodes since first starring in the show at the age of five.
In a statement, Bird called her work on the show "the start of an incredible journey" and wished Smith luck in the role.

The popular piglet has also been voiced by Lily Snowden-Fine and Cecily Bloom.
