Quit Weed and Get a Job, Patriot

Pentagon spending on missiles, satellites, and nuclear weapons fuels a production boom, as firms fight off commercial aerospace downturn.
As U.S. unemployment reached its highest level since the Great Depression amid the coronavirus pandemic, some of America's largest defense firms are hiring thousands of workers to build fast-flying missiles, satellites and nuclear weapons.
Even amid nationwide social distancing practices, companies are interviewing job candidates through video conferencing and other technology as they look to fill positions on national security projects that Pentagon leaders want to keep on schedule.
"[W]e recognize that providing jobs during this period of economic downturn is also critically important," Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson said last month on the company's quarterly earnings call. "We are committed to continued hiring during this crisis."
Lockheed, the world's largest defense company, already has hired more than 2,365 new employees since March when many U.S. companies began furloughing or layoff workers amid coronavirus stay-at-home orders. In addition, Lockheed is "actively recruiting for over 4,600 roles," in 39 states and Washington, D.C., the company said in a statement Friday.

Lockheed Martin's Marillyn Hewson to step down as CEO
Lockheed Martin Corp said on Monday company veteran Marillyn Hewson will step down as chief executive officer, and tapped board member and American Tower Corp boss James Taiclet as her replacement.
Hewson has been with the Pentagon's largest defense contractor since 1983 and was took over as chief executive in January 2013.
Under Hewson's leadership Lockheed stock has gained more than three-fold, thanks to the F-35 fighter jet program and other military contracts.
Michele Evans, who took over as executive vice president of Lockheed's aeronautics division in October 2018, was widely seen as a leading candidate to succeed Hewson.
Lockheed had changed its mandatory retirement age rules in 2018 to exempt the CEO, allowing Hewson to stay on past 2019.

Major U.S. Military Contractors Stand to Reap Huge Windfalls from Escalation of Conflict with Iran
Meet the CEOs Raking It in from Trump's Aggression toward Iran
CEOs of major U.S. military contractors stand to reap huge windfalls from the escalation of conflict with Iran. This was evident in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. assassination of a top Iranian military official last week. As soon as the news reached financial markets, these companies' share prices spiked, inflating the value of their executives' stock-based pay.
I took a look at how the CEOs at the top five Pentagon contractors were affected by this surge, using the most recent SEC information on their stock holdings.
Northrop Grumman executives saw the biggest increase in the value of their stocks after the U.S. airstrike that killed Qasem Suleimani on January 2. Shares in the B-2 bomber maker rose 5.43 percent by the end of trading the following day.
Wesley Bush, who turned Northrop Grumman's reins over to Kathy Warden last year, held 251,947 shares of company stock in various trusts as of his final SEC Form 4 filing in May 2019. (Companies must submit these reports when top executives and directors buy and sell company stock.) Assuming Bush is still sitting on that stockpile, he saw the value grow by $4.9 million to a total of $94.5 million last Friday.
New Northrop Grumman CEO Warden saw the 92,894 shares she'd accumulated as the firm's COO expand in value by more than $2.7 million in just one day of post-assassination trading.
Lockheed Martin, whose Hellfire missiles were reportedly used in the attack at the Baghdad airport, saw a 3.6 percent increase in price per share on January 3. Marillyn Hewson, CEO of the world's largest weapon maker, may be kicking herself for selling off a considerable chunk of stock last year when it was trading at around $307. Nevertheless, by the time Lockheed shares reached $413 at the closing bell, her remaining stash had increased in value by about $646,000.
What about the manufacturer of the MQ-9 Reaper that carried the Hellfire missiles? That would be General Atomics. Despite raking in $2.8 billion in taxpayer-funded contracts in 2018, the drone maker is not required to disclose executive compensation information because it is a privately held corporation.
We do know General Atomics CEO Neal Blue is worth an estimated $4.1 billion-and he's a major investor in oil production, a sector that also stands to profit from conflict with a major oil-producing country like Iran.

Lockheed Martin to keep Pennsylvania plant open at POTUS' request
Lockheed Martin Corp has decided to keep the Sikorsky helicopter plant in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, open after U.S. President Donald Trump pressed its chief executive to continue operations, the company said on Twitter on Wednesday.
"At the request of President Trump, I took another look at our decision to close the Coatesville, PA, facility and have decided to keep it open while we pursue additional work," Lockheed Martin quoted CEO Marillyn Hewson as saying.
Trump applauded the decision in a tweet, saying, "We are very proud of Pennsylvania and the people who work there. Thank you to Lockheed Martin, one of the USA's truly great companies!"
The F-35 fighter manufacturer had announced plans to close the plant, which does "completion work" for Sikorsky's S-92 and S-76D helicopters, citing a multi-year slump in the rotorcraft industry. The plant employs about 465 employees.
"We look forward to working with the government and PA Congressional delegation to find more work for this facility," the company said.
Republican Pennsylvania Senator Patrick Toomey said in a statement that Lockheed's decision provided short-term certainty for workers at the plant who had expected to either lose their jobs or be re-located later this year.
Fellow Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey, a Democrat, was skeptical about the announcement, however, saying he was concerned about the lack of a specific plan.
U.S. automaker General Motors Co has been under pressure for months from President Trump over the fate of an idled assembly plant in northeast Ohio which it has since announced it will sell.
Both Ohio and Pennsylvania are crucial to Trump's chances of being reelected in 2020.

Looks like she gave most of that to Alabama.
Lockheed's Marillyn Hewson, husband make biggest one-time gift in University of Alabama history
By Michael Neibauer - Associate Editor, Washington Business Journal
Jul 31, 2018, 7:11am EDT
Lockheed Martin Corp.'s President and CEO Marillyn Hewson, and her husband James, just made the Crimson Tide very, very happy.
The Hewsons have donated $15 million to The University of Alabama, the largest one-time gift in the school's history, to support the Culverhouse College of Business. Both Marillyn and James Hewson are graduates of the university - the Lockheed (NYSE: LMT) chief with a bachelor's in business administration and a master's in economics, and James Hewson with a bachelor's in communications.
The gift comes on the heels of a $5 million commitment the couple made to Culverhouse last year to back the Marillyn Hewson Faculty Fellows Program in Data Analytics and Cyber Security.
"I am deeply thankful for the strong business education I received at The University of Alabama," Marillyn Hewson said in a release. "That education helped prepare me for many of the challenges and opportunities I've encountered throughout my career - from the day I joined the company as an industrial engineer to my current role as CEO."

MOST POWERFUL WOMEN
#1 Marillyn Hewson
Chairman, President, and CEO, Lockheed Martin, 64
Nothing says power like rockets and ramparts. Hewson has become the top purveyor of U.S. defense at a time when geopolitical threats (and the government funding that goes along with them) abound-not just on earth, but also in space and cyberspace. As head of the country's largest government contractor, Hewson rises to No. 1 this year, having positioned Lockheed Martin in the sweet spot to cater to the modern military's needs-from its humming F-35 fighter jet program to its ability to equip the White House's proposed "Space Force." Lockheed is also leading the charge to develop hypersonic weapons, which travel five times as fast as the speed of sound. Such new tech has become a U.S. national security priority given advances in Russia and China, helping Lockheed win about $1 billion in contracts so far in 2018. That's been a tailwind for the stock, with returns up 15% year over year, boosting Lockheed's market value to nearly $100 billion.

Airbus, Lockheed team up for U.S. tanker refueling
BERLIN (Reuters) - Airbus and Lockheed Martin said on Tuesday they are teaming up to meet a growing demand for aerial refueling from the U.S. Air Force, nearly eight years after the European plane-maker lost an initial battle with Boeing.
The deal marks the first major foray by Airbus into the huge U.S. military market since its failed 2012 bid to merge with Britain's BAE Systems and its large U.S. business.
It also promises a sequel to an epic battle between the world's largest planemakers, that saw two former Boeing executives sent to federal prison for ethics violations.
Demand for tankers, which refuel combat aircraft during exercises or missions, has grown as armed forces stage more longer-range operations around the world.
The U.S. Air Force, which wants to ultimately replace its entire fleet of more than 400 tankers, is looking to meet growing demand for aerial refueling with possible fee-for-service arrangements, purchases of hundreds of additional aircraft, and the future development of a stealthy tanker.
Senior Airbus and Lockheed executives have agreed to explore all these opportunities, but are still working on details of their future cooperation, sources familiar with the matter said.
Airbus, which previously worked with Northrop Grumman Corp., won a $35 billion contract in 2008 to build its MRTT tankers for the U.S. Air Force.
But the deal was overturned amid political pressure and the U.S. Air Force reran the competition, which Boeing ultimately won, landing a $49 billion contract in 2011 to build 179 of its 767-based tankers.
Boeing had hoped this would lead to further orders but it has struggled with the KC-46A program, missing deadlines and racking up some $3 billion in additional costs.
Todd Blecher, a Boeing spokesman, told Reuters it is working with the U.S. Air Force to deliver the first tanker before the end of the year and the new aircraft would be "the backbone of global mobility for generations to come."
But Airbus and Lockheed now hope to win orders for the A330-based Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), and eventually design work on a next-generation tanker.
"We will be well-positioned to provide the United States Air Force with the advanced refueling solutions needed to meet 21st century security challenges," Lockheed Chief Executive Marillyn Hewson said in a statement.
Airbus is banking on the success of the MRTT, which has been selected by 12 countries, including Australia, Britain and South Korea, and is already refueling or capable of refueling most major U.S. combat jets, including the F-35 fighter.
Lockheed, builder of the F-35 and the C-130J transport plane that can also be used as a tanker, will give Airbus a strong partner for future U.S. bids, the companies said.Speech

4/24/18 - At the state dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron, (((Apple))) CEO Tim Cook sat one seat away from Trump.
Cook and Apple VP (and former EPA administrator) Lisa Jackson were among those at last night's White House state dinner. Also on the guest list, per CNN, were IBM chief Ginni Rometty and Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson.
4/25/18 - Cook and President Trump had a closed-door meeting at the White House. They discussed building factories in the United States, (((China))), and tax reform.
These discussions were NOT only about economics and trade wars.
5/2/18 - Cook: "China and the U.S. have this unavoidable mutuality where China only wins if the U.S. wins and the U.S. only wins if China wins and the world only wins if China and the U.S. win," Cook said in Apple's earnings call on Tuesday. "I think history shows us that countries that embrace openness and diversity do much, much better than the ones that are closed."
Washington officials led by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin head to Beijing to discuss trade.
