New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced an all-female transition team on Wednesday, hours after winning a race in which he campaigned as a fresh face.
The group he introduced, however, includes some familiar names - veterans of New York's current and previous Democratic mayoral administrations, as well as that of former President Joe Biden.
Here's a look at who's leading the plans for Mamdani, a democratic socialist, to take office:
Lina Khan, former Federal Trade Commission chair
Khan, who served as FTC chair under Biden, is known for going after corporate giants, specifically by enforcing antitrust laws, and for trying to lower prescription drug costs by targeting pharmacy benefit managers. On her watch, the FTC sued Amazon and Meta, alleging monopolistic and anticompetitive practices. She has made enemies with billionaires like Elon Musk, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and IAC and Expedia Group Chairman Barry Diller.
Khan resigned almost immediately after President Donald Trump took office earlier this year.
Melanie Hartzog, former New York City deputy mayor
Hartzog, who will serve as co-chair of the transition team and the team's director, is deeply familiar with City Hall. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed her deputy mayor for health and human services. Before that, she was the director of the Mayor's Office of Management and Budget, where she oversaw the largest municipal budget in the country.
Elana Leopold, political strategist
Leopold, also a de Blasio alum, was a senior Mamdani campaign adviser and will serve as the transition team's executive director.
Maria Torres-Springer, former first deputy mayor
Torres-Springer served as first deputy mayor in current Mayor Eric Adams' administration before she resigned this year after he was indicted on federal bribery and campaign finance charges. (Adams denied wrongdoing, and a federal judge dismissed his case at the urging of the Justice Department.)
Like Hartzog, Torres-Springer has held several roles in municipal government, including deputy mayor for housing, economic development and workforce, and Department of Housing Preservation & Development commissioner.
Grace Bonilla, nonprofit president
Bonilla is president and CEO of United Way of New York City. She previously held several roles in the administrations of de Blasio and Michael Bloomberg.
Bonilla was appointed by de Blasio to serve as executive director of a new task force on racial equity and inclusion. For Bloomberg, Bonilla served as deputy commissioner overseeing the Office of Community Affairs and Immigrant Services, and as assistant deputy commissioner with the Office of Constituent Services.
CORRECTION (Nov. 5, 2025, 6 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated the circumstances surrounding Lina Khan's departure from the FTC. A representative for Khan said she voluntarily resigned shortly after Trump took office, independent of any threats to her job.

How federal judge's decision could determine Adams' fate as Hochul mulls ousting NYC mayor in historic move
Gov. Kathy Hochul will wait for a federal judge's upcoming decision in Eric Adams' corruption case before she potentially takes the extraordinary step of removing New York City's mayor, said the Rev. Al Sharpton.
Sharpton gave a glimpse in Hochul's thinking on Adams' future after a high-stakes meeting inside the governor's Manhattan office Tuesday.
The sit-down was one of several high-profile meetings Hochul planned as she weighs whether to remove Adams from office over growing concerns that he's politically beholden to President Trump.
"We're going to wait and see what the judge says tomorrow so we do not set a precedent," Sharpton told reporters.
"Supposing today she removed him because he's been indicted and the judge says tomorrow, 'I'm throwing out the indictment,' it would be premature."
Judge Dale Ho is holding a hearing Wednesday over the Justice Department's bid to quash Adams' corruption case.
Ho warned that the government's bid to abandon the prosecution isn't a done deal, noting a recent ruling that judges can reject such moves if doing so would be "clearly contrary to manifest public interest."
The governor announced the extraordinary set of sit-downs - which will include City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Comptroller Brad Lander, US House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards - after four New York City deputy mayors resigned en masse Monday.

A failed Hunter Biden business venture - which an ex-partner said involved Joe Biden - targeted "key domestic contacts" including Gov. Cuomo for potential projects across the country, documents reveal.
A May 15, 2017, memo naming potential contacts was sent by Joe Biden's brother Jim to his nephew and three other men who all formed a limited liability company to partner with another firm on "global and/or domestic" projects involving "infrastructure, energy, financial services and other strategic sectors," the documents show.
The other company was backed by a since-vanished Chinese energy tycoon and was to "be primarily responsible for arranging financing and execution" of the projects, according to the documents released by Tony Bobulinksi, who was CEO of the joint venture.
The memo, titled "Key domestic contacts for phase one target projects," noted that Cuomo "is moving forward with major infrastructure projects such as the long-stalled Tappan Zee Bridge replacement and the much-needed redevelopment of LaGuardia Airport."
"His administration has invested nearly $4 billion through the Regional Council and Upstate Revitalization initiatives to jumpstart the economy and support local priorities for development," it added.
Cuomo was also referenced in an earlier e-mail that Bobulinski released in which another partner, James Gilliar of the consulting firm J2cR, discussed various strategies tied to their business plan.
"Meet Gov of NYS?? , if so times?? Meet anyone else??, are we meeting in NYC or elsewhere??," Gilliar wrote on April 27, 2017.
The memo included no elaboration about Mayor de Blasio but said the then-president of the city's Economic Development Corp., Maria Torres-Springer, "drives the physical transformation of New York City, completes major infrastructure upgrades, and encourages the creation of new residential and commercial districts."
Sen. Chuck Schumer was described as having "made improving New York's economy a top priority, bringing affordable air service to Upstate New York and working to successfully retain New York jobs at risk of leaving and attract many new firms to New York."

Others on that list included the presidents of Colombia and Argentina, and the "European Union in general."
Both memos, which appear to have been copy-and-paste jobs, were sent as Microsoft Word documents with property values that show their author as Jim Biden's wife, Sara Biden.
In response to the memos, Hunter Biden e-mailed the other partners the next day and expressed concern "that these lists of contacts and strengths are going to come back to haunt us."
Hunter Biden suggested the lists "could easily serve .?.?. as the foundation for the divvying up of territory both geographically and commercially" by their partner in the joint venture.
"I may be paranoid but having worked in. [sic] The lobbying industry for years these attempts to create focus at the outset always and I mean always ended in disaster," the e-mail says.
"We should be thinking what we want to focus on and not who knows who as direction for focus in my opinion."
The memos and e-mails are among more than 900 documents Bobulinski made public this week and outline plans for a company called Oneida Holdings to provide consulting services to a company called Hudson West IV.
The documents show Hudson West IV was controlled by Ye Jianming, then chair of CEFC China Energy Co., and "Director Zang," an apparent reference to CEFC's executive director, Zang Jian Jun.
Ye disappeared after being taken into custody by Chinese authorities in early 2018, and CEFC, which was China's largest private energy company, went bankrupt this year, according to reports.

The joint venture, which was called SinoHawk Holdings, was never funded by CEFC nor did it complete any deals, The Wall Street Journal reported late Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.
SinoHawk was apparently dissolved around October 2018, according to documents released by Bobulinski.
Cuomo's office didn't return a request for comment.
City Hall said there were no meetings between the Oneida partners and any officials.
"Take a metal detector out to Rockaway Beach this weekend. You'll have a better chance of finding something of substance and you'll get a nice walk in, too," said de Blasio spokesman Mitch Schwartz.
A Schumer spokesman said neither the senator nor his aides had knowledge of the memo.
A Scott spokeswoman said, "Sen. Scott wasn't contacted. He has called for a full investigation into Hunter Biden and the Biden family's corruption."
Joe Biden's campaign, Jim and Sara Biden, and the others mentioned in the memos didn't return requests for comment.
