South African Home Affairs Minister Resigns Amid Sex Tape Scandal
South African Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has resigned amid a sex scandal with his participation, the country's presidential office said on Tuesday.
"President Cyril Ramaphosa has today, Tuesday 13 November 2018, received a letter of resignation from the Minister of Home Affairs, Mr Malusi Knowledge Nkanyezi Gigaba. The President has accepted the Minister's resignation and expressed his appreciation for Minister's Gigaba longstanding service to the government and people of South Africa," the presidential office said in a statement.
Ramaphosa also appointed Minister of Transport Blade Nzimande as acting home affairs minister.
Gigaba has recently been in the centre of the scandal around a leaked video in which he was captured during a sexual act. He was accused of giving false testimony during the proceedings in the Supreme Court.
Apart from working at the head of the Home Affairs Ministry, Gigaba also previously headed the Ministry of Public Enterprises and the Finance Ministry.

"Strange, we've seen this thing before: Break-in at offices of Zondo Commission is sign of panic as final deadline looms"- Part 2dated 18 April 2021 at https://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2021-04-18-strange-weve-seen-this-thing-before-break-in-at-offices-of-zondo-commission-is-sign-of-panic-as-final-deadline-looms/.
In July 2020, regulation 11 of the State Capture Commission was amended to allow law enforcement agencies to access evidence presented.
"Testimony presented at the Zondo Commission, exposing the extent of State Capture, has been shocking and exposes the true nature and impact of widespread corruption within the State," said the SAHRC.
The Zondo Commission, it added, had the potential to assist the National Prosecuting Authority to hold to account "individuals and entities in the private sector, within the State and at all other spheres".
Zuma has been hostile in his defiance, attacking also the integrity of the commission chair, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
Allies in the ANC, including Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte , who claimed in a leaked recording that the Zondo Commission viewed the governing party "with jaundiced eyes", have also undermined its work.
The most recent witness to give the commission a last-minute middle finger was Norma Mngoma, formerly Gigaba, whose much-anticipated testimony was due to be given on 14 April.
The wife of the former rotating minister in the Zuma Cabinet, and friend of the Gupta family Malusi Gigaba, was set to shed light on and confirm allegations that Gigaba had received vast quantities of cash from the Gupta family.
One unnamed witness testified that he had seen a bag stuffed with R200 notes in the boot of Gigaba's official vehicle and that the former minister of finance would pay cash at restaurants and for his bespoke suits.
Life in Chez Gigaba took a nasty turn when Mngoma was arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation at the behest of her husband.
On 11 February high court Judge Cassim Sardiwalla ruled that Gigaba's abuse of power involving the Hawks to arrest his wife and confiscate her cellphones and laptops was illegal.
Mngoma said the confiscation of her electronic devices had been an attempt by her husband to obtain evidence she was prepared to offer to the commission.
It would be safe to assume that Mngoma would have provided the commission with an affidavit when she first opted to testify against her estranged husband.
Gigaba, in the meantime, had pleaded for Mngoma's testimony to be given "in camera" to protect their minor children.
It is clear that Mngoma had had second thoughts, informing the commission, through her legal representative Gcwalisile Makhathini, on the day she was due to appear that she had "personal" concerns with how her appearance was being "handled or mishandled" by commission investigators.
Zondo said it was not up to Mngoma to simply withdraw and that she would be subpoenaed and would have no option but to appear.

"JUST IN: Norma Mngoma withdraws from Zondo Commission"dated Apr 13, 2021, at https://www.iol.co.za/news/politics/just-in-norma-mngoma-withdraws-from-zondo-commission-a5c61f83-63a0-45e3-8981-5f65c52163aa
Norma Mngoma, the estranged wife of former finance minister Malusi Gigaba, who was meant to spill the beans on her husband's alleged relations with the Guptas has now withdrawn from testifying at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.
Mngoma was meant to begin her testimony at 4pm on Tuesday after it was initially rescheduled from Friday.
However, the commission heard from Mngoma's legal representative, who said she wished to withdraw from her participation in the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture.
Mngoma's legal representative from RNT attorneys read out a letter to Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo saying that they received instructions on Monday night informing them of Mngoma's decision.
The attorneys addressed a letter to the commission on Tuesday morning informing them of her decision.
Mngoma cited her "personal concerns with how various aspects regarding her proposed appearance at the commission is being handled or allegedly mishandled by the commission".
Justice Zondo said it was surprising Mngoma made such a decision as she was ready to testify on Friday.
Evidence leader Anton Myburgh said they were also surprised at Mngoma's letter saying they were prepared for her to give evidence virtually from Cape Town.
Myburgh has proposed issuing a summons to compel Mngoma to give evidence.
Gigaba's application to have Mngoma's testimony held in-camera has been set aside until Mngoma has been summoned to give evidence.

"ANC Youth League to make a comeback, task team appointed" after being dissolved in 2019- https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/anc-youth-league-to-make-a-comeback-task-team-appointed/.
The ANC Youth League leadership was dissolved in 2019 after members embarked on demonstrations, claiming the ANCYL NEC was too old and way beyond the age limit
The African National Congress (ANC) has released the names of the ANCYL National Youth Task Team. The team has essentially been tasked with resuscitating the ANC Youth League - by means of strengthening and consolidating existing structures of the youth league and to build new ones in consultation with regions and provinces.
The appointments were announced on Thursday, 08 April 2021.
"The ANCYL NYTT will primarily serve as a National Congress Preparatory Committee charged with the responsibility to prepare the ANCYL for conference... It is also charged with the responsibility to develop and roll out a programme of action, bringing together young people from different facets as a build-up to the envisaged elective conference," the party said.
Some of the appointments to the ANC Youth League Task Team include Nomceba Mhlauli, currently a spokesperson in the Ministry of the Presidency, Fasiha Hassan, member of the Gauteng legislature, Joy Maimela and Thuthukile Zuma, the daughter of former president Jacob Zuma.
ANC secretary general Ace Magashule introduced Mhlauli as the convener of the newly established team, while Maimela will be its coordinator.
The ANC Youth League leadership was dissolved in 2019 after members embarked on demonstrations, claiming the ANCYL NEC was too old and way beyond the age limit required to serve.
The ANC Youth League has long been considered a breeding ground for future leaders of the ANC. The movement, dubbed the "Young Lions" has produced a number of political bigwigs in the ruling party, including Fikile Mbalula and Malusi Gigaba.
"The ANC is determined to rebuild the ANCYL and restore its vibrancy so that it can continue to fulfill its historic mission. In the 1940s, the ANC was revitalized and became more militant in its actions and articulations. A key reason for this was the influence of the ANC Youth League whose leadership included giants such as Anton Lembede, its first president, Oliver Tambo, Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu," the ANC further said.
"Today, as we seek to consolidate the gains of our liberation struggle, the ANC continues to look up to its youth to once again play a leading role in the national effort to confront the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality"
The ANC said its national officials have already met with the leadership of the NYTT and expressed overall support in their work of rebuilding and restoring the ANCYL.
