The Moderates, Sweden Democrats, Christian Democrats and Liberals appear set to get 176 seats in the 349-seat parliament to the centre-left's 173 seats, according to the latest figures from the election authority. A handful of votes remain to be counted, but the result is unlikely to change significantly. "I will now start the work of forming a new government that can get things done," Kristersson said in a video on his Instagram account. The election marks a watershed in Swedish politics with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, a party with roots in the white supremacist fringe, on the threshold of gaining influence over government policy. The success of the party, which took over from Kristersson's Moderates as the country's second biggest, has raised fears that Sweden's tolerant and inclusive politics are a thing of the past. However, their mantra that Sweden's ills - particularly gang crime - are a result of decades of overgenerous immigration policies have hit home with many voters. Kristersson said he would build a government "for all of Sweden and all citizens". The Swedish parliament has approved a constitutional amendment to criminalise foreign espionage and disclosure of secret information, limiting what the press may report on certain subjects.
The constitutional amendment seeks to make foreign espionage, aggravated foreign espionage, and disclosure of secret information in international cooperation criminal offences and will affect both freedom of expression and freedom of the press in Sweden.
The new changes could see journalists and others, such as whistleblowers, prosecuted for disclosing secret information that may damage Sweden's relationship with other countries or international organisations, broadcaster SVT reports.
Former Swedish prime minister Magdalena Andersson, the leader of the Social Democrats, stated her support for the amendment saying, "It's a gap that we have in our legislation and that we need to close. It is about national security."
Mikael Ruotsi, senior lecturer in constitutional law at Uppsala University who worked on the bill, claimed that it was unlikely journalists would be prosecuted under the constitutional changes, noting that there are existing laws on publishing secret information and these have rarely been applied to media.
But Nils Funcke, a free speech expert, has warned that any changes to freedom of expression and freedom of the press should be proportionate.
"There should be some fine surgery in this. It should not be that you introduce a provision that strikes very broadly, but it should just tackle the problem that you have identified and documented," he said.
The new law comes as Sweden faces one of the largest espionage cases in recent history after two Iranian-born brothers were charged with spying and handing over secret information to the Russian military intelligence agency GRU.
The older brother worked in the Swedish Security Police (Sapo), Swedish military intelligence, and the Office for Special Acquisition (KDI), a secretive intelligence branch that recruits spies and informants from other countries.
The younger brother, meanwhile, allegedly had contact with Russian intelligence and is accused of organising payments for information.

Sweden won't share findings of the investigation into the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipelines with Russian authorities or Gazprom, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said on Monday.
A Swedish crime scene investigation of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines from Russia to Europe has found evidence of detonations and prosecutors suspect sabotage.
Last week Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin sent a letter to the Swedish government demanding that Russian authorities and Gazprom would be allowed to be involved in the investigation, which Sweden denied.
On Monday Andersson said Sweden won't even share the findings of the explosions that took place in the Swedish economic zone, with Russian authorities.

Europe, which previously relied on Russia for about 40% of its gas, is facing an energy crisis in the aftermath of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine, which has drastically cut supplies of fuel.

Scandinavian countries will become NATO observers at the upcoming summit
Turkey will support inviting Finland and Sweden into NATO at the alliance's upcoming summit in Spain, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto announced on Tuesday after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
The three countries signed a memorandum of understanding at the meeting, organized with the support of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"The concrete steps for our accession to NATO will be agreed among NATO allies over the next two days, but that decision is now imminent," said Niinisto. "I am pleased that this stage on Finland's journey towards NATO membership has been completed."
According to Turkey, Finland and Sweden pledged to "condemn terrorism in all its forms" and end their support for organizations Ankara has designated as terrorist - including the Kurdish groups PKK and YPG, as well as the movement led by the exiled cleric Fetullah Gulen, which the Turkish government refers to as "FETO."
"Turkey got what it wanted," Erdogan said in a statement after the deal was announced.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Stoltenberg said that Finland and Sweden will become observers in NATO at the upcoming summit. He added that the memorandum includes provisions on fighting terrorism and arms exports, including adopting stricter national legislation.
Finland and Sweden imposed an arms embargo against Turkey in 2019, over Ankara's intervention in Syria. Turkey also reportedly demanded that Stockholm and Helsinki shut down the offices and ban the publications belonging to FETO, freeze the assets related to groups it has designated as terrorists, and even ban them from demonstrating in public.
Ankara's opposition threatened to derail NATO's plan to invite Sweden and Finland at the summit in Madrid which began on Tuesday. The two traditionally neutral Scandinavian countries declared their desire to join the US-led alliance in April, citing the current conflict in Ukraine.

Footage posted on Russian social media claimed the rockets were heading towards Vyborg - a city located just 30 miles from Finland and 135 miles from Helsinki, putting the capital within easy range.
Meanwhile Vladimir Putin - chairing a meeting of ex-Soviet heads of state in Moscow today - warned of a 'response' if NATO 'infrastructure' expands into either country.
The Russian president insisted he has 'no problem' with either Sweden or Finland joining the NATO alliance.
But, he added, 'the expansion of military infrastructure on to this territory will certainly trigger a response.'
Finland and Sweden have been bound to codes of neutrality since at least the Second World War, in return for security guarantees from Moscow that it will not attack them.
However, the Ukraine invasion has triggered a wholesale re-think and dramatic swing in public opinion which is now in favour of membership.
Joining the alliance could take months, since all 30 current members have to ratify Sweden and Finland so they can join. But there is little doubt they will be allowed in, despite grumbling from member-state Turkey.
In the meantime, both nations have been granted security guarantees from the UK and US to come to their defence if they are attacked.
As the political row intensified, NATO began hosting a huge war games in Estonia - within sight of Helsinki across the Gulf of Finland - to rehearse their response to a hypothetical Russian attack.
Some 15,000 troops from 10 different countries - including Finland, Sweden and a small detachment from Ukraine - will participate in the exercise dubbed 'Siil' or 'Hedgehog' which will take place just 40 miles from the nearest Russian military base.
The drill is one of the largest exercises based out of the country since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991 - bolstered by an additional 900 British troops deployed to Tallin in February before the war in Ukraine broke out.
Sanna Marin, the 36-year-old prime minister of Finland, was pictured leading a session of parliament Monday just a day after announcing her intention to apply for NATO membership.
She spoke as Magdalena Andersson, Marin's Swedish counterpart, held a similar session in Stockholm.
Russia's deployment of Iskander missiles comes after state media threatened to deploy additional nuclear weapons to the Baltics.
Iskanders are the workhorse of Russia's missile forces and can perform a wide variety of roles depending on the warhead they are fitted with.
Charges include lung-crushing thermobarics, banned cluster munitions, tank-killing armour piercingrounds , bunker-busters, and electromagnetic for taking out radar.
But the most eye-catching of the Iskander's warheads is a nuclear charge, thought to be around four times as powerful as the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.
The missiles have a range of up to 300 miles and are most-commonly carried by road-mobile launch vehicles, which makes the missiles harder to find and destroy.
Iskander missiles are known to be stationed in Kaliningrad - Russia's central European enclave - and, since the start of the war in Ukraine, in Belarus.

Sweden Ends Neutrality, Joins Finland in Seeking NATO Berth
STOCKHOLM-Sweden's prime minister announced Monday that Sweden will join Finland in seeking NATO membership in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a historic shift that comes after more than 200 years of military nonalignment in the Nordic country.
The move, which is likely to upset the government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, came after neighboring Finland announced Sunday that it too would seek to join the 30-country military alliance.
Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson called it "a historic change in our country's security policy" as she addressed lawmakers in the Swedish capital.
"We will inform NATO that we want to become a member of the alliance," she said. "Sweden needs formal security guarantees that come with membership in NATO."
Andersson adding that Sweden was acting together with Finland, whose government announced on Sunday it would seek to join the alliance.
The announcement came after a debate in the Riksdagen, or parliament, earlier Monday showed that there is a huge support for joining NATO. Out of Sweden's eight parties, only two smaller left-leaning parties opposed it.
On Sunday, the Swedish Social Democrats broke with the party's long-standing position that Sweden must remain nonaligned, paving the way for a clear majority for NATO membership in the parliament.
Public opinion in both Nordic countries was firmly against joining NATO before the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, but support for NATO membership surged quickly in both nations after that.
"The Swedish government's intent is to apply for NATO membership. A historic day for Sweden," Foreign Minister Ann Linde wrote on Twitter. "With a broad support from political parties in the parliament, the conclusion is that Sweden will stand stronger together with allies in NATO."
Once a regional military power, Sweden has avoided military alliances since the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Like Finland it remained neutral throughout the Cold War, but formed closer relations with NATO after the 1991 Soviet collapse.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the governments in Finland and Sweden responded by initiating discussions across political parties about NATO membership and reaching out to the United States, Britain, Germany, and other NATO countries for their support.
The Kremlin, however, has repeatedly warned the move would have destabilizing consequences for security in Europe.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday that Moscow "does not have a problem" with Sweden or Finland as they apply for NATO membership, but that "the expansion of military infrastructure onto this territory will of course give rise to our reaction in response."
In Helsinki, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Monday that there is "very significant" support in the Congress and that he expects swift ratification. He said he hoped a vote could be held before the August recess.
In the Swedish Parliament, only the small Left and Green parties objected to seeking NATO membership.

Russia's attack on Ukraine was a "turning point" for security relations in Europe, the German chancellor said
Germany will support the admission of Finland and Sweden into the NATO military alliance, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, after the two Nordic states expressed interest in joining up despite decades of neutrality.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday following two days of closed-door meetings with his Finnish and Swedish counterparts in a town near Berlin, Scholz vowed to back both nations' bid to join the Western military bloc should they submit membership applications.
"For us it is clear: If these two countries decide they should join the NATO alliance then they can count on our support," he said, adding, "Even in the period before such NATO membership is decided, they can always rely on Germany's support. As Europeans, we see ourselves obliged to do so anyway."
Scholz's comments follow reports that Helsinki could declare its intent to join NATO as early as next week, with President Sauli Niinisto purportedly set to announce the move on May 12. It remains unclear if Stockholm will follow suit, though the country's parliament recently said it would conduct a review of Swedish security policy before a decision is made.
While earlier reports stated both countries would submit their applications at the same time, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto has said his country could ultimately go ahead without its neighbor.
"Currently I think the mood in parliament... includes the possibility to go without Sweden," the FM told the Irish Times in an interview last week. "It would be good to do the same things at the same time as Sweden, but that depends on Swedish decisions. It is too early to guess the date, but I think before the summer we are proceeding."
Addressing journalists after Scholz on Tuesday, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said a decision had not yet been made and that "All options are on the table," comments echoed by Finland's prime minister, Sanna Marin.
"Finland and Sweden are facing important decisions regarding their own security," Marin said, adding that "Russia's attack on Ukraine has dramatically changed our security environment, and that cannot be undone."
The German chancellor similarly labeled Russia's military operation a "turning point" for security on the continent, saying the attack prompted Berlin to scrap a long-held policy against shipping weapons into active conflict zones. "It was right and necessary" to change that policy, Scholz continued, adding, "we are now providing large-scale support [to Ukraine], which we will continue to do."

Finland and Sweden could join NATO as early as this summer in response to Moscow's ongoing military assault on Ukraine, according to a report from Britain's The Times newspaper, on Monday.
The Finnish application to join the bloc is expected to be submitted in June, with Sweden following suit shortly after that, unnamed US officials told the British newspaper.
The possible membership of the two Nordic nations was "a topic of conversation and multiple sessions" during the summit of NATO's foreign ministers in Brussels last week, the sources said. Finland's FM Pekka Haavisto and his Swedish counterpart Ann Linde were both present at the two-day talks.
Helsinki and Stockholm "would be real feathers in NATO's cap as net contributors," especially in terms of intelligence-gathering and air-force capabilities, according to a European diplomat who talked to the paper.
Russia, Finland and Sweden all have access to the Baltic Sea, with a shared Russian-Finnish land border spanning some 1,340km.
A senior US official claimed that the Russian offensive in Ukraine was "a massive strategic blunder for [Russia's President Vladimir] Putin" as it made Helsinki and Stockholm question their policy of not joining any military alliances.
Moscow opposes the expansion of NATO, but the inclusion of Finland and Sweden in the bloc won't become an existential threat to it, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov told Sky News on Friday. But Russia would have to make its "Western flank more sophisticated in terms of ensuring our security" if such a move takes place, he said.
NATO is "tailored for confrontation and the main purpose for its existence is to confront our country," Peskov said.
Finland must decide on its NATO bid "thoroughly but quickly," Sanna Marin, the country's prime minister, said earlier this month. "Russia is not the neighbor we thought it was," she insisted.
"I don't exclude NATO membership in any way," her Swedish counterpart Magdalena Andersson pointed out in late March.
Both Helsinki and Stockholm have announced that they're now carrying out reviews of their security policies. The Finnish review is expected to be completed by mid-April and the Swedish one by the end of May.
Finland's foreign minister had earlier suggested that, if the country eventually decides to join the bloc, it could take the parliaments of the 30 NATO member states between four and 12 months to officially approve the bid.
However, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg insisted that "the very decision to welcome Finland to NATO can be made very quickly and then it is a formal process in the capitals or parliaments to ratify it."

She made the comment during a press conference on Tuesday, implying that further steps toward joining NATO would have a "negative impact" on the security situation in Ukraine.
While Andersson described Russia's actions in Ukraine as "an increasingly brutal and indiscriminate warfare that affects civilians," denouncing the conflict as "illegal" and calling for violence against civilians to stop "immediately,"she did not seem interested in further entangling Sweden in the conflict. Stockholm has successfully delivered military equipment, she explained, and appears to be looking for further ways to support Kiev - such as strengthening its resistance to cyber-attacks - that don't run the risk of directly involving the nation in hostilities.
Sweden and Finland recently wrote a joint letter to the other member of the EU reminding them of the common defense clause within the Treaty of Lisbon, which requires EU countries to provide mutual support and assistance "should a Member State be subjected to an armed attack on its territory."
The clause serves the same purpose as NATO's Article 5, which declares that an attack on one NATO state is considered an attack on all members and will be retaliated against accordingly.
Sweden's center-right opposition parties have long sought NATO membership for the country, a move the governing Social Democrats have historically opposed. While Andersson acknowledged on Saturday that the "security situation" had been "altered in a dramatic way," and NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg has hinted the door is open to a quick accession to the alliance, no public plans have been made to join.

As efforts to prevent the transmission of the virus have faltered and nations lower the threat presented by SARS-CoV-2, Europe is speeding plans to end the COVID regulations. Sweden and Switzerland have announced that they will lift COVID limitations and eventually open their nations, joining Denmark, Norway, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Lithuania, France, and the United Kingdom.

Leading Israeli officials also stated this week that the country's COVID vaccine passport, known as the "Green Pass," will be phased out of restaurants, hotels, gyms, and cinemas.
Prime Minister Naftali Bennet's cabinet said that the policy amendment will enter into force on February 6, awaiting approval by a legislative panel. For occasions including parties or weddings, Israel's proof-of-vaccination regulation will stay in force.
"To continue the green pass in the same way can create false assurances," said Nadav Davidovitch, an epidemiologist and public health physician advising Prime Minister Naftali Bennet's government. "It's not reducing infections in closed spaces like theatres. It needs to be used mainly for high-risk places like hospitals, elderly care homes, or events when you are eating and singing and dancing."
Sweden's government announced on Thursday that all COVID restrictions will be lifted by February 9th.
As per Politico, due to a greater awareness of the Omicron variant, which in itself is weaker and linked with fewer hospitalizations, the Swedish Public Health Agency reviewed COVID as "not being socially critical."
"It's time to open up Sweden," said Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson. "The pandemic isn't over, but it is moving into a new phase."
Sweden's resolution comes a day after Switzerland declared that, from today, compulsory work-from-home and isolation requirements will be abolished, citing excellent immunity rates and the milder Omicron variant.
The administration would also relax border health regulations, removing the requirement for tourists to get Swiss COVID certificates.
After speaking with 26 cantons, employers, trade unions, and parliamentary committees, the Swiss government said it intended to start taking down further limitations.
By an official statement, the government will decide the subsequent measures to ease pandemic precautions in two weeks, based on the health status.
A gradual departure strategy or a swift stop to all COVID restrictions on Feb. 17 are two options.

Denmark has since become the first nation in the European Union to abolish all COVID regulations, relabeling COVID as an endemic disease, just days prior to Sweden and Switzerland made their statements.

In a press conference on Thursday morning, the Swedish government announced plans to remove the majority of restrictions against Covid-19 on February 9th, the Local.se reported.
Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, Health Minister Lena Hallengren and the Director General of the Public Health Agency, Karin Tegmark Wisell, announced that almost all restrictions will be removed on February 9th, and that those working from home should prepare to return to work.
"The pandemic is not over, but is entering a completely new phase," said Andersson. "We are nearing the point for Sweden to open up again."
The government explained that the decision to open up was based on a number of factors, partly that Omicron appears to be a milder variant of the virus, and partly that the percentage of Sweden's population who are fully vaccinated or have taken a booster dose continues to increase.
"There are multiple international studies of a milder illness, and the data we have from Sweden paints the same picture," Andersson explained. "The rate of vaccination in Sweden has been high in recent weeks," she continued, stating that this means that "we can open up society, at least for all who have been vaccinated".
Almost 50 percent of over-18s in Sweden have received their third dose of the vaccine, and more than 86 percent of over-12s have received their first dose. Sweden does not recommend the Covid vaccines to children under the age of 12, unless they are particularly at risk.
Health Minister Lena Hallengren also stated that "the government is planning on removing travel restrictions introduced on December 21st for the Nordic countries", stating that they would provide more information as soon as it was possible.
She didn't say anything about travel restrictions for other countries. Sweden's current entry rules for EU/EEA arrivals are currently in place until February 28th, and March 31st for people travelling from other countries.
In terms of returning to work and higher education, Hallengren stated that "in order to prevent a new wave, the return to work and school should occur successively".

An illegal migrant with a criminal record and a deportation order against her name was taken into custody at the home of Sweden's new Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, a burglar alarm inadvertently tripped during cleaning automatically summoning police to the address.
The discovery of the illegal migrant took place shortly before Christmas on December 21st but has only now come to light in Swedish media. According to now-emerging reports, cleaners tripped a burglar alarm at Prime Minister Andersson's villa in Nacka, Stockholm by mistake while working.
After police arrived they detained the two cleaners working at the home and found that one of them, a woman, was not only in the country illegally without a valid residency permit, had been rejected for residency and given a deportation order, but also had a criminal record, Swedish newspaper Expressen reports.
Tommy Kalenius, station commander at the police in Nacka described the incident after police were alerted to the alarm saying, "It came in as an ongoing burglary there. Then we checked a person and then it has turned out that the person has a rejection decision. [She was] handed over to the Swedish Migration Agency for further processing."
The woman is said to be a 25-year-old Nicaraguan national who was rejected for residency in the Autumn of 2020 but has been working illegally ever since, and has been wanted by police since the Autumn of 2021.
She had previously been convicted of theft in 2020 and given a suspended sentence by a court in Stockholm.
Andersson later commented on the matter through her press secretary, telling Expressen, "I have ended all contacts with the cleaning company," and added, "I now assume that the responsible authorities get to the bottom of this and clarify what has happened. I never comment on my security situation."
She said in further comments that: "Even those of us who want to do the right thing can fall foul of dodgy operators".
The CEO of the cleaning company also spoke to Expressen, stating that he sometimes hires staff from different companies but refused to identify which companies he uses. He also insisted, it is reported, that the illegal migrant wasn't actually supposed to be inside the Prime Minister's family home and may have been discovered sitting in a car outside the property.
The incident comes after Andersson was confirmed as Sweden's first female Prime Minister following the resignation of her predecessor Stefan Lofven in November.
Andersson resigned her position just hours after being selected as Prime Minister after facing and losing a major budget vote the same day. She was later re-elected Prime Minister to form a single-party minority government, one of the weakest governments in Sweden in decades.
Ironically, British state broadcaster the BBC notes, Andersson has made tackling the illegal economy a major ambition of her government.

Lofven, a former welder and union negotiator, has headed a minority coalition with the Greens since 2014 and said earlier this year that he would step down ahead of the next general election, due in September 2022.
Andersson replaced Lofven as leader of the Social Democrats last week and is likely to be the speaker of parliament's first choice to form a new government.
"We have an election in scarcely a year and it is important that we have a quick handover," Lofven, who had said in August he would hand in his resignation this month, told reporters. "I think voters want this to go smoothly."
The speaker of parliament said he would hold talks with all parties and hold a press conference at 1445 GMT on Thursday.
It remains unclear if Andersson has enough support to pass a confirmation vote in parliament, which could happen next week.
She does not need a majority in the 349-seat parliament to back her as prime minister. But she must avoid a majority voting against her.
On Wednesday, the Centre Party agreed not to block Andersson's candidacy in return for easier building regulations and changes to forestry ownership laws.
But Andersson will still need at least passive support from the formerly communist Left Party, whose leader, Nooshi Dadgostar, has demanded a say on policy.
If Andersson promises that, she risks losing the backing of the Centre Party, which has centre-right roots and wants to exclude the Left from any influence over government.
If parliament rejects Andersson, Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson will probably be given a try. He is backed by the populist, anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, a party that both the Centre and Left want to keep from influencing policy.
"The Left Party has to realize that there is going to be a new government and the question is which one do they want?" Lofven said.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Hours after being tapped as Sweden's prime minister, Magdalena Andersson resigned Wednesday after suffering a budget defeat in parliament and coalition partner the Greens left the two-party minority government.
"For me, it is about respect, but I also do not want to lead a government where there may be grounds to question its legitimacy," Andersson told a news conference.
Andersson has informed parliamentary Speaker Anderas Norlen that she is still interested in leading a Social Democratic one-party government.
She said that "a coalition government should resign if a party chooses to leave the government. Despite the fact that the parliamentary situation is unchanged, it needs to be tried again."

Sweden's PM formally resigns for second time
Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Lofven has formally resigned from office for the second time, months after a vote of no confidence and political infighting stalled his agenda ahead of the country's upcoming 2022 general election.
Lofven was filmed on Wednesday handing his resignation letter to the speaker of the parliament, Andreas Norlen, marking the end of his seven-year tenure as prime minister.
Back in August, Lofven had announced his intention to resign from office, claiming that he wants to give his successor "the best of conditions" ahead of the 2022 general election.
"The decision has matured over time. I have been party chairman for ten years, prime minister for seven. These years have been amazing. But everything comes to an end," Lofven said.
Throughout the last year, Sweden has been dogged by political infighting that saw Lofven quit as prime minister after losing a vote of no confidence. He was later re-appointed as the country's leader after opposition parties were unable to form a government.
The dispute that led to Lofven's downfall had centered around a debate about housing market policy, which cost the Social Democrats their coalition partner, the Left Party, depriving the government of a majority.
Magdalena Andersson, the finance minister, was recently elected to replace Lofven as the leader of the Social Democrats. Lofven's resignation clears the way for her to become the nation's first female prime minister, if she can secure the backing of a majority of MPs.
It is not clear when a vote will be held in Sweden's parliament on whether to appoint Andersson as Prime Minister. The Center Party has said it will back Andersson's bid to take over from Lofven as the nation's leader. The Left Party and Green Party are expected to do the same.

Trillions In "Liquidity Support Is Going To Be Needed" As Swiss, Finns Join Europe's Bailout Brigade
Credit Suisse repo guru Zoltan Poszar published what may have been the most insightful snippet of the entire European energy crisis (to date) when he extended the infamous "Minsky Moment" framework to Europe, and specifically Germany, which he said "can't cover its payments without Russian gas and the government is asking citizens to conserve energy to leave more for industry." He then elaborated that "Minsky moments are triggered by excessive financial leverage, and in the context of supply chains, leverage means excessive operating leverage: in Germany, $2 trillion of value added depends on $20 billion of gas from Russia... ...that's 100-times leverage - much more than Lehman's." But while Germany is front-and-center in this margin call malaise, many other European nations are suddenly succumbing to what Zoltan dubbed a "supply-chain Minsky moment."
Over the weekend, we reported that Sweden and Austria had begun to bail out their energy suppliers: Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said the loan to Wien Energie was an "extraordinary rescue measure" to ensure its two million customers - mainly Vienna households - continue to receive electricity. It will run until next April. Prime minister Magdalena Andersson said the government would offer hundreds of billions of kroner in support to electricity producers, the FT reported. The PM warned that, left unchecked, rising collateral demands for electricity producers could ripple through the main Nasdaq Clearing market in Stockholm and, in the worst case, spark a financial crisis.... just as Zoltan warned almost half a year ago.
And today, Reuters reports that Finland and Switzerland have joined the bailout brigade...Finnish utility Fortum said it had signed a bridge financing arrangement with government investment company Solidium worth 2.35 billion euros ($2.34 billion) to cover its collateral needs. A Finnish government official told Reuters the support was in addition to the 10 billion euros of liquidity guarantees Helsinki announced for power companies on Sunday.
Swiss utility Axpo said it had received a credit line of up to 4 billion Swiss francs ($4.1 billion) from the government to help secure its liquidity needs. The Swiss government has lined up a 10 billion franc safety net for power firms, but decided to allocate the funds to Axpo even though the legislation is still before parliament. The numbers are adding up fast but pale in comparison to what the final price could be if European governments decide this is their 'whatever it takes' moment. (yes it's the derivatives stoopid....financial weapons of war work in silent..mostly and when you use leverage in this quantity..it's way higher than 100:1 so sorry Zoltan but you have to keep yer job so I see why you watered it down but good on ya for posting..they'll eventually silence you too and remember who is on your BoD...Good ol Blythe Masters and she will certainly take notice of this write-up as being one of the inventors of the credit-default swap (CDS) products that JP Morgan profited so handsomely from...she'll be watchin' ya) Norwegian energy giant Equinor ASA warned European energy trading risks grinding to a halt unless governments extend liquidity to cover margin calls of at least $1.5 trillion. Bloomberg reports that Helge Haugane, Equinor's senior vice president for gas and power, said in an interview that "liquidity support is going to be needed," warning that his company's estimate for $1.5 trillion to prop up so-called paper trading is "conservative." And Haugane confirms what we explained was driving the breakdown in market functioning in the (paper) energy markets:
"This is just capital that is dead and tied up in margin calls," Haugane said in an interview at the Gastech conference in Milan.
"If the companies need to put up that much money, that means liquidity in the market dries up and this is not good for this part of the gas markets," he said.
Sadly - but not entirely unexpectedly, Haugane says that EU plans to intervene would be "sensible" for derivatives trading. In other words, we are back to the 'too big to fail' arguments from 2008 when fears of the apocalypse (this time in real energy markets ahead of winter) prompted demands that government "do something" to save the over-levered from themselves... with the excuse being 'if you do not rescue us, there will be hell to pay for the average EU joe'. Finally, how exactly does this explicitly inflationary 'bailout' pair with ECB's inflation-fighting mandate? We are sure Lagarde and Van der Leyen have all the answers... and if you dare ask, you are a Putin puppet (because remember decades of piss-poor policy decisions signaling as much virtue as possible led to this crisis point among the 'green' climate climaxers... Putin's invasion of Ukraine was merely the final straw that Trump had warned about).
Without the 'pain' that Fed Chair Powell has warned about, no one will ever face the consequences of change their actions... but none of that accountability gets you elected, so don't expect anything but more intervention. As Daniel Lacalle recently concludes, if there is one thing that this crisis shows us, it is that what Europe needs is more market and less intervention. Europe arrived at this crisis due to a combination of arrogance and ignorance on the part of the legislators who control the energy mix. The importance of a balanced mix, with nuclear, hydro, gas and renewables is more evident every day. Interventionist energy policy has failed miserably. More intervention is not going to solve it.

Top US General Mark Milley said Saturday that the United States is determined to support Sweden and Finland as the countries pursue NATO membership, a statement underscored by his visit to the USS Kearsarge after it became the largest US warship ever to dock in Stockholm. Turkey will support inviting Finland and Sweden into NATO at the alliance's upcoming summit in Spain, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto announced on Tuesday after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
The three countries signed a memorandum of understanding at the meeting, organized with the support of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"The concrete steps for our accession to NATO will be agreed among NATO allies over the next two days, but that decision is now imminent," said Niinisto. "I am pleased that this stage on Finland's journey towards NATO membership has been completed."
According to Turkey, Finland and Sweden pledged to "condemn terrorism in all its forms" and end their support for organizations Ankara has designated as terrorist - including the Kurdish groups PKK and YPG, as well as the movement led by the exiled cleric Fetullah Gulen, which the Turkish government refers to as "FETO."
"Turkey got what it wanted," Erdogan said in a statement after the deal was announced.

Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Stoltenberg said that Finland and Sweden will become observers in NATO at the upcoming summit. He added that the memorandum includes provisions on fighting terrorism and arms exports, including adopting stricter national legislation.
Finland and Sweden imposed an arms embargo against Turkey in 2019, over Ankara's intervention in Syria. Turkey also reportedly demanded that Stockholm and Helsinki shut down the offices and ban the publications belonging to FETO, freeze the assets related to groups it has designated as terrorists, and even ban them from demonstrating in public.
Ankara's opposition threatened to derail NATO's plan to invite Sweden and Finland at the summit in Madrid which began on Tuesday. The two traditionally neutral Scandinavian countries declared their desire to join the US-led alliance in April, citing the current conflict in Ukraine.
