Village People will perform Trump anthem 'Y.M.C.A.' at World Cup draw, FIFA says

FIFA has announced that the Village People, the pop group that sings President Donald Trump's adopted anthem of "Y.M.C.A.," will perform at the World Cup draw Friday.

The draw will take place at the Kennedy Center on Dec. 5 in Washington for the World Cup, which will be co-hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Kennedy Center is chaired by Trump since he and his allies took over the venue's board after his return to power earlier this year.

Trump has previously said he will be "involved" in the event.

On Tuesday night, FIFA announced what it described as a "world-class entertainment line-up" that will be co-hosted by supermodel, producer and Emmy-winning television personality Heidi Klum, as well as comedian Kevin Hart and actor and producer Danny Ramirez.

There will also be live music performances from classical singer Andrea Bocelli, as well as a duet between British pop star (and FIFA music ambassador) Robbie Williams and American singer Nicole Scherzinger.

FIFA said that when the draw has concluded, the Village People will treat the audience to an "iconic" performance of "Y.M.C.A." The song was often heard at Make America Great Again rallies during Trump's re-election campaign, as well as at Mar-a-Lago fundraisers, and Trump often dances along while his supporters sing the song.

FIFA's president Gianni Infantino was present at Trump's inauguration in January as well as his pre-inauguration rally.

After Trump expressed his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which went to Venezuelan democracy advocate Maria Corina Machado, FIFA has since announced it will award its own Peace Prize at the draw Friday, which is widely expected to go to the U.S. president. Infantino previously wrote on Instagram, after the Israel-Gaza ceasefire, that Trump deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. The Athletic has previously reported FIFA did not consult its own FIFA Council or the organization's vice presidents before conceiving of or announcing the peace prize, and the council and vice presidents had no consultation on the selection criteria.

FIFA said the announcement of the draw conductors and assistants is still to follow. At the FIFA Club World Cup draw in Miami last December, Trump's daughter Ivanka and grandson Theo made the ceremonial first picks.

The November election is the rematch America doesn't want: the two oldest and among the most unpopular candidates in our history.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Republicans are stuck with former President Donald Trump. Unless he dies or is incapacitated medically, he's their nominee. He may have to win to stay out of jail.

But there is a way for President Joe Biden to step aside, to voluntarily remove himself for the good of the nation and the party.

Biden could announce, anytime this summer, that he's out. He could use the same logic that got him the nomination in 2020. He sincerely and accurately believed that he was the Democrat with the best chance to beat Trump. Now, he is one of the few national Democrats who could get Trump reelected.

Battleground state polls look bad for Biden

Recent polling of Biden against Trump looks ugly. Biden has low support among young, Black and Hispanic voters, crucial votes in swing states. Biden is seen as too old to serve a second term by many voters.

Some perceptions of candidates can be changed. But voters are unlikely to decide that Biden is younger and more vigorous than they thought.

Biden's poll numbers are awful.America, brace for a Trump victory in November.

If Democrats were to nominate Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, he'd beat Trump like LeBron James posting up Kevin Hart. There are many others, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey. Trump would look old and unhinged next to their youthful competence and sober characters.

And while Vice President Kamala Harris, who polls worse against Trump than Biden does, would have been a serious threat to take the nomination in open primaries, there is no chance a convention of Biden delegates would select her. They want to beat Trump too badly to take that risk.

What about giving up all the advantages of incumbency? Truth be told, there aren't many this year.

Biden has had, by most standard measures, a pretty successful presidency. But he's being blamed for high inflation, the U.S. troops withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. A new face works better on intractable problems like the Middle East.

Wouldn't an open national convention be a chaotic disaster for the Democrats?

Let's learn from Trump. When his most prominent rival, Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, refused to endorse him at the 2016 Republican convention, which had not happened in the modern era, Trump didn't panic. He knew that drama makes great TV. He was right.

An open Democratic convention would make great TV

Modern conventions are scripted and boring affairs that struggle to get viewers. An open convention with delegates rooting for Harris, Whitmer, Shapiro and others would be amazing TV. The nation would be spellbound by great floor speeches, unexpected endorsements from politicians and celebrities, rallies, music and marches.

Mr. President, you're one of the few Americans old enough to remember when conventions were fascinating and powerful. They've become predictable and almost pointless. Why not pull a surprise on the Republicans, and let the convention pick the nominee for the first time in decades?

Why not go down in history as the guy who beat Trump twice and saved our republic?

The first time you beat him by running. This second time, you can beat him by not running.

Jimmy Fallon, Madonna, Serena Williams, and other celebs hit with class action lawsuit claiming they conspired to promote Bored Ape NFTs at inflated prices while taking hidden payoffs

A class action lawsuit filed Thursday accuses a host of celebrities of promoting Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) non-fungible tokens at artificially increased prices without disclosing their financial stakes or personal interests, thereby misleading investors and violating both state and federal laws.

The suit details how celebrity promoters, allegedly engaged in "unlawful, unfair, and deceptive practices," played a significant and lucrative role in a conspiracy engineered by Hollywood elites.
Fungible outrage

Deadline obtained a copy of the lawsuit, which names the leadership of Yuga Labs - the blockchain start-up company behind the BAYC NFTs - along with various executives and celebrities, including Madonna (Louise Ciccone), Paris Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, Justin Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Serena Williams, Kevin Hart, Stephen Curry, and DJ Khaled.

The crypto-payments startup MoonPay was also named among the defendants.

The suit claims that Yuga Labs conspired with "highly-connected Hollywood talent agent" Guy Oseary and MoonPay to promote and sell a suite of digital assets.

Oseary signed a representation deal with Yuga Labs in October 2021. Madonna is another Oseary client.

According to the complaint, Yuga executives and Oseary together schemed to "leverage their vast network of A-list musicians, athletes, and celebrity clients and associates to misleadingly promote and sell the Yuga Financial Products."

Their promotional campaign was "wildly successful, generating billions of dollars in sales and re-sales," said the complaint.

"The manufactured celebrity endorsements and misleading promotions regarding the launch of an entire BAYC ecosystem … were able to artificially increase the interest in and price of the BAYC NFTs during the Relevant Period, causing investors to purchase these losing investments at drastically inflated prices," it continued.

The lawsuit added that by "promoting the BAYC NFTs on their social media platforms and through their reported conduct, [the celebrities] provided assistance that was a substantial factor in causing the NAYC NFTs price to both surge and do so long enough to allow all Defendants to sell their BAYC NFTs for huge profits at the expense of their followers and investors."

The value of these NFTs dropped significantly in May, bottomed out in August, and crashed again after the FTX collapse.
Cleaning out their adoring fans

Celebrities did not appear too keen to disclose that they were more than just BAYC customers. Deadline reported that, before the crash, celebrities like Jimmy Fallon publicly praised the Bad Ape NFTs, claiming to be customers themselves. Fallon, for instance, had done so on "The Tonight Show" in November 2021.

Paris Hilton, among the defendants, came onto Fallon's show in January to join him in once again pushing the NFTs.

In one tweet posted on January 13, 2013, Waititi mocked the idea of men wanting to dress up as women at a beauty pageant.

It seems that some Republican senators are having trouble reading the room. These individuals appear to believe that after being acquitted in the Democrat-led sham impeachment trial, former President Donald Trump is going to be forced to ride off into the sunset.

It is this lack of self-awareness that made Trump necessary in the first place. But in the words of comedian Kevin Hart, "they're gonna learn today."

The Hill reported, "though only seven of the 50 GOP senators voted to find Trump 'guilty' at the end of his second impeachment trial, Republicans, including those who voted to acquit, are plotting a future where Trump is no longer their center of gravity after years of dominating their day-to-day lives.

Trump is showing no signs of going away, saying in a statement after the trial concluded that the MAGA movement was just getting started. But Republicans say he has a diminished following and competition for the party's top spot."

Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), a close Trump ally, said, "he's made it pretty difficult to gain support. As you can tell, there's some support that will never go away, but I think that is a shrinking population and probably shrinks a little bit after this week."

Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN), who voted to acquit Trump, said, "I think whatever the president intends to do in the future would take a lot of soul searching. ... I am more concerned about how we rebuild the party in a way that brings in more people to it."

The senators' comments underscore a growing sentiment among Republican leaders that the riots at the U.S. Capitol building have diminished Trump's popularity and influence to the point that he will no longer possess a significant level of leadership on the right.

The Hill reported:

The shifts were on full display in recent days: Most Republicans have been careful not to defend Trump personally, members of the caucus have privately discussed whether there would be enough support to censure the president and the seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump spanned fiscal conservative to moderates.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) stressed that those who voted to acquit Trump were not necessarily condoning his behavior since Election Day. "There's no way. You can't defend much of what happened in the last almost three months since the Nov. 3 election," he said.

Still, Trump's resolve has not dampened; indeed, it seems to have been strengthened by the outcome of the impeachment trial. "This has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country. ... Our historic, patriotic and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun," Trump declared in a statement.

Republicans who believe that Trump will no longer be an important factor going forward do not appear to have an accurate read of the playing field. As The Hill admitted, "Trump retains an iron grip on a chunk of the party base - the same voters Republicans will need if they want to win back the House and Senate next year."

What these GOP lawmakers fail to understand is the impact Trump has on the culture of the conservative movement. He may not have power as an elected official, but as a cultural influencer, he has more power than these people can comprehend. Over the next few years, Trump will demonstrate the political version of Master Obi-Wan Kenobi's warning to Darth Vader when he said "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can imagine."

The reality that folks like Thune, Cramer, and the GOP lawmakers who voted to convict Trump is that he wields far more influence among rank-and-file conservative voters than every member of the GOP establishment combined. Did the riots diminish some of his influence? Probably, but not to the point that it would prevent him from continuing to be a powerhouse.

The former president is already preparing to use his influence and $31 million war chest to target lawmakers who want to wipe his populist movement from the face of conservatism as if it never happened. Those trying to downplay the sway Trump continues to have on the right are underestimating the anger that everyday conservative voters feel towards the establishment. Their miscalculation could cost them bigly in the 2022 election season.

Ricky Gervais reflects on his 'zeitgeisty' Golden Globes speech: 'I think people were tired of the hypocrisy'

It was the meme shared 'round the world: During Ricky Gervais's gleefully scorched-earth monologue at this year's Golden Globes ceremony, the cameras caught America's Dad, Tom Hanks, expressing extreme discomfort as the famously outspoken British comedian went after Hollywood's assembled royalty. Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment six months removed from the event, Gervais insists that Hanks wasn't as offended as viewers at home assumed. "I don't think he was anti what I was saying," he explains in an interview recorded from his home in London. "I think he sort of thought, 'Oh, this is a bit hot. Is this OK?'" (Watch our video interview above.)

Gervais adds that he hasn't spoken to the Forrest Gump star - and coronavirus survivor - since that night, where he tearfully accepted the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B. DeMille Award. But the comedian thinks they'd be able to share a pint and a laugh about it anyway. "I don't think he would be offended. But the flip side of it, when I teased Leonardo [DiCaprio], and he really laughed, people loved that! People love a celebrity going, 'You got me.' That's all you have to do."

Of course, plenty of people also love a good celebrity takedown, and that's what Gervais provided onstage. During the course of his monologue, the creator and star of the Netflix drama After Life poked fun at embattled stars like Kevin Hart and Felicity Huffman, and also issued a blanket warning to anyone with a politically-minded acceptance speech prepared: "If you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a political platform to make a political speech. You're in no position to lecture the public about anything, you know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg. So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your God and f*** off. OK?"

Those words wound up resonating with a wide swath of viewers, and Gervais recognized immediately that he touched a nerve. "It was quite zeitgeisty," he says now. "I suppose because people were tired of being lectured by multi-millionaires telling them to recycle when they're flying around in private jets. So I think people were tired of the hypocrisy." At the same time, he's careful to note that he's interested in comedy first, and social commentary a distant second. "I'll often take a complete opposite stance to what I actually believe if it makes the joke better. I'll pretend to be right-wing, left-wing or no-wing! It depends on the joke."

Gervais points to his Golden Globe appearances as one reason why some viewers have a hard time taking him seriously when he tries to go in a more dramatic direction. But those audiences would be wise to watch both seasons of After Life, in which the writer, director and star plays Tony Johnson, a widower wrestling with grief, depression and suicidal thoughts after his wife dies of breast cancer. "The seed of the idea was, 'Imagine if you lost everything and you were going to kill yourself,'" Gervais says, noting that he's seen and heard first-hand how the show has resonated with viewers. "I've never had a reaction like it. I don't just mean the size of the reaction, I mean the emotional strength of the reaction."

Gervais drew on some of his personal experiences with grief while writing After Life. In Season 2, for example, Tony loses his elderly father (David Bradley), which stirred memories of when his own dad passed away. "Everything is semi-autobiographical, because I think you should always write about what you know. And when you get to 58, you've got things to grieve over. I lost my mom and my dad about 20 years ago, I lost my older brother last year. I imagine that the worst thing is losing your life partner."

After Life's second season ends with Gervais potentially embarking on a new relationship with a nurse played by his Extras costar, Ashley Jensen. But don't expect Season 3 - which he hopes to shoot in the spring of 2021 - to be sunshine and roses all of a sudden. "He's still grieving, and he's also got guilt," Gervais says. "You've got to find a clever way of giving people what they want, without killing [the drama]. It's really tough; that's why movies always end with them walking into the sunset!"

Former President Barack Obama said in a commencement speech on Saturday that current leaders during the coronavirus crisis were failing 2020 graduates.

The former president did not directly criticize Donald Trump, but he repeatedly referred to leaders currently in power.

"Broad majorities agree on the ends," he said, urging graduates to seek unity. "That's why folks with power will keep trying to divide you over the means. That's how nothing changes."

The former president spoke online to recognize historic black college and university graduates on Saturday, offering a 2020 commencement speech for those who were unable to graduate due to the coronavirus.

"Even though half of the semester was spent in Zoom university, you've earned this moment. You should be very proud," he said.

The president was joined by celebrities Kevin Hart, Steve Harvey, Chris Paul, Debbie Allen, Common the rapper, and Vivica Fox, as well as national politicians such as Sen. Kamala Harris and Sen. Tim Scott.

Obama urged graduates to fight for "economic and environmental justice and health care for everyone" and to fight the "system that looks out for the rich and the powerful and nobody else."

He said that the virus only enhanced the understanding that the black community continues to suffer inequality in the United States, but that they should reach out and find others who suffered the same struggle.

"Meaningful change requires allies and common cause. As African Americans we are particularly attuned to injustice, inequality, and struggle but also that should make us more alive to other experiences of others," he said.

Obama urged graduates to stand up for immigrants, refugees, the rural poor, the LGTB community, low-income workers, and women.

The president also referenced 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery, noting that the injustice of "a black man goes for a jog and some folks think they can stop and question and shoot him if he does not submit to their questioning."

He said the same struggles were not new in the United States and asked all graduates to do their part to fight.

"What is new is that so much of your generation has woken up to the fact that the status quo needs fixing," he said.

You could binge watch the entire first season of Afterlife instead of watching this show. That' s a show about a man who wants to kill himself because his wife dies of cancer and it's still more fun than this. Spoiler alert, Season 2 is on the way, so he obviously didn't kill himself, just like Jeffrey Epstein. Shut up, I know he's your friend, but I don't care. She spoke with King on "CBS This Morning" in November 2018 about the events that shaped her - including how sharing her story has helped her overcome self-doubt. Obama described her experience on the campaign trail with her husband as being "probably one of the hardest [chapters] for me to write."
"Because it goes over a painful time in the campaign when I thought I was doing great telling my story, sharing it honestly. But my whole persona was distorted," she told King. Regardless of criticisms, Obama said being honest about her life has provided her with a sense of worth and belonging. "I am good enough to be the first lady. I do love my country," Obama said.
For Essence Festival Main Stage host Loni Love, the moment is especially poignant. "This is a full circle moment for me," the comedian told CBS News. "Both Michelle Obama and Gayle King have been an inspiration to me and many others." Love has been an outspoken champion of black female voices and has even lent her own voice to the pages of Essence.
"I am excited, honored and humbled to host this keynote event at this year's Essence Festival," Love said, joking that she "may try to get them both to take a tequila shot after the conversation!" Love joins a list of lauded comedians to host main stage festivities, including Kevin Hart and Nephew Tommy.
Organized by the magazine of the same name, Essence Festival spans three days and includes musical performances by Sheila E, Missy Elliott, and Big Freedia, along with panels featuring prominent CEOs and politicians. Those events include a 2020 Democratic panel spotlighting Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Beto O'Rourke and Elizabeth Warren.

President Trump's rally in Houston in support of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has been moved to a larger venue because of high demand, Trump's campaign manager announced Thursday.

The rally was initially scheduled for the 8,000-seat NRG Arena. But Brad Parscale tweeted the rally has relocated to the Toyota Center, which holds up to 19,000 people for concerts. The venue is home to the NBA's Houston Rockets.

The Toyota Center later confirmed to The Hill that it will host the event.

The Trump campaign announced on Monday that the president would head to Houston to hold a rally for his one-time rival, Cruz.

The initial choice of NRG Arena was a subject of mockery on social media, as the president pledged in August to hold a "major rally" at "the biggest stadium in Texas we can find."

An aide for the Trump campaign who asked not to be identified told The Dallas Morning News that the arena was the biggest location available on Oct. 22, and disputed that the venue fell short of expectations the president set in his August tweet.

The Toyota Center did not have other publicly announced events scheduled for Monday. Comedian Kevin Hart is set to perform there on Saturday, and a Josh Groban concert is set for Tuesday.

Monday's rally will add to a long list of campaign events Trump has held in recent weeks to bolster GOP Senate candidates. The president has made stops in Tennessee, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and will travel this week to Montana, Arizona and Nevada.

Cruz's race against Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) has drawn national interest as the challenger has garnered significant fundraising hauls in traditionally Republican Texas.

However, polls of late show Cruz maintaining a steady lead. A RealClearPolitics average of polls shows Cruz with a 7-point lead in the race.

Trump and Cruz have been publicly supportive of one another after a 2016 presidential campaign in which the two regularly exchanged insults. The president labeled Cruz "Lyin' Ted," and the senator blasted then-candidate Trump as a "sniveling coward" and a "pathological liar."

I spent an hour reading Kim's Affidavit and the exhibits. Without really understanding who Kevin Hart is and what his relationship to Obama/Biden is, Kim makes a good argument that he was being set up for extradition when he applied for residency in NZ and it was being pushed by Biden and MPAA head Dodd.

If it were up to me, I'd let Kim get on with his life and give him all of his money back(with interest, just like Iran got) in the currency of his choice. Unfortunately, its not up to me and his case is hard to generate a lot of traction and justice boners over because he was providing a service which was facilitating copyright infringement on a vast scale. Fair use doctrine, DMCA takedown procedures etc probably put him into a "barely legal" category, but the need to make the case "technically, what he was doing was ok because users were the actual infringers" is a tough one to explain to like my mother.
