F-18 Crashes and Explodes at Former South Carolina Gov's Family Plantation; Pilots Eject Safely
Fri, March 4, 2022, 11:21 AM
It was humid outside, so John Sanford was riding around on a tractor, cautiously monitoring for wildfires around his family's South Carolina plantation when he received a call telling him that a fighter jet had crashed and exploded on the property.
John, the brother of former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford and himself a civilian pilot for 31 years, drove to a nearby field to examine the crash site. He saw a white parachute dangling from one of the hundreds of grand live oak trees on the plantation, and hopped off the tractor to run toward it.
"I assumed the worst," John Sanford told Military.com, "I knew what I might be seeing, and I knew it might be ugly."

When he arrived at the tree line, he saw a young man in uniform and a woman with a cut near her mouth, walking towards him out of some nearby bushes.
"I knew it was the pilots because they were carrying their survival gear, their seat and their helmets," he recalled. "They walked up to the fence, and the man asked me, 'Are there any civilians where the plane went down and do you think anyone got hurt?'"
"He just got ejected out of an airplane and had the presence of mind to ask that question, which I thought was very impressive," John Sanford continued. "When the pilots popped out of the bushes, I just could not possibly have been more happy."
Around 3:15 p.m. Thursday, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort reported that an F/A-18D Hornet from the base's 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing had crashed. The pilots survived, and no civilians were hurt.
"There were no fatalities as a result of the crash," MCAS Beaufort said in a statement. "Both Marines onboard the jet safely ejected with no injuries and are in stable condition."
Military investigators, base personnel and fire and rescue teams from the nearby town swamped the property shortly after the plane went down.
The crash did cause damage to a portion of the family's 3,000 acre property. Mark Sanford, a former U.S. congressman and governor, told Military.com that a large fire broke out when the plane exploded on impact and it wasn't extinguished until much later that evening.
The former governor, who was not at the scene when the incident happened, said the crash wasn't too far from where his dad is buried on the plantation. It was his father's final wish to be laid to rest under the centuries-old live oaks.
"So, those big oaks where we buried dad, any number of them are definitely goners with the explosion and fire that ensued," Mark Sanford said. "Within the scope of things, it's a much bigger loss for taxpayers with the loss of the jet and, thankfully, there was no loss of life."
Thursday's incident is not the first time an aircraft from MCAS Beaufort has crashed in the surrounding community.
Devastation struck on April 21, 2007, when Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Davis, a Blue Angels pilot, crashed his F-18 into a residential neighborhood near the base. A temporary decrease in blood flow to his brain caused by the gravitational pull likely caused Davis to experience tunnel vision and become disoriented, according to military investigators.
Davis broke formation and crashed, dying on impact. The crash caused extensive damage to nearby homes, and eight people on the ground were injured.
More recently, in September 2018, an jet crashed on Little Barnwell Island, a marshy area west of the base. The pilot ejected safely from the single-seat jet, and no civilians were injured.
MCAS Beaufort said a safety investigation into Thursday's mishap is ongoing.

FAIRFAX, VA: "Police in Virginia say the discovery of four bodies at two different locations in the state are the work of a serial killer who used a shopping cart to transport his victims' bodies after meeting them on dating sites. At a press conference Friday, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis dubbed the suspect, 35-year-old Anthony Robinson of Washington, D.C., the "shopping cart killer" and said police are working to determine if there are other victims. Police in Harrisonburg arrested Robinson last month and charged him with two counts of murder after finding two bodies in a vacant lot in the city. Evidence uncovered after Robinson's arrest led police to search an area near the Moon Inn in Fairfax County south of Alexandria. During the search, detectives noticed a shopping cart and recalled that a cart had been used to transport the bodies in the Harrisonburg cases, said Ed O'Carroll, commander of the major crimes unit in Fairfax County. Near the shopping cart was a large plastic container that held the remains of two women. Police did not say whether the victims were sexually assaulted, but Davis stated bluntly during the press conference that the suspect did "unspeakable things with his victims."

Northern Virginia police departments increases presence amid purported ISIS threat against shopping malls
Megan Cloherty | mcloherty@wtop.com

Police in Northern Virginia are increasing their presence around shopping malls and high-volume roads and transit areas in response to a purported threat from ISIS.
A law enforcement source told CBS News the recent threat against a mall in Northern Virginia this Halloween weekend originated from ISIS. It is the basis for a law enforcement-sensitive alert that was issued.
Out of an abundance of caution, Fairfax County's police chief said his department is ready to respond if the threat materializes.
Chief Kevin Davis said he learned of the threat through regional intelligence partners in the last 24 hours. While he wouldn't describe it in detail, Davis said his department is responding in-kind.
"We have ramped up our presence at places where people shop, at places where people recreate, gather, dine. It's our responsibility to do that we routinely do this," Davis said at a news conference Friday.
Fairfax County officers expect to be on high alert around holidays, he said, but there is more reason to be cautious going into next week.
"We have an election coming up next Tuesday where we'll have increased patrols throughout the next several days out of an abundance of caution, because that's what we do as a public safety agency," Davis said.
The Arlington County Police Department said they had heard the "non-specific, unconfirmed threat to shopping centers." They recommended that shoppers remain attentive while going about their normal routine, especially in large crowds of people.
Arlington police said they will be deploying additional police in the county for the weekend.
Prince William County police said they are aware of the reports, and will be working with fellow law enforcement agencies in the area to share information.
"While we have not received any credible information of a threat, we do ask our community to remain vigilant while we continue working with our law enforcement partners to ensure everyone remains safe," Prince William police said in a statement.
WTOP reached out to the FBI, which had no comment but said it takes all potential threats to public safety seriously.

Two men, 19 and 20, are arrested for shooting dead US Army colonel, 55, and his veteran wife, 63, 'at point blank range' outside their Virginia home
Cops arrested two men on Thursday for allegedly shooting a U.S. Army colonel and his veteran wife to death outside their Virginia home.
Ronnie Marshall, 20, and D'Angelo Strand, 19, have each been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of the use of a firearm in commission of a felony, Fairfax County Police Department officials said.
Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and his wife Brenda McDaniel, 63, were gunned down outside of their home on the 8000 block of Flint Street in Springfield on Wednesday, officials said.
'We're here because two pillars of our community, of our country, really, we're gunned down viciously in their own front yard,' Kevin Davis, the department's chief of police, said.
The arrests come after cops found a 2018 light-colored Nissan Altima with Maryland plate number 1EF1479 that they had been searching for, after it was believed to have been tied to the crime.
Earlier on Thursday, police took an unnamed third person of interest into custody after a local resident reported seeing the car.
'Thanks to the community, we got our offenders,' said Ed O'Carroll, commander of the department's major crimes bureau.
Army officials said Edward McDaniel Jr. has been a doctor of internal medicine with the military since June 1995 and was director of executive medicine at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital, WRC-TV reported.
He held the rank of colonel and had received a number of awards and decorations through his distinguished career, including: Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Medic Badge among other awards and ribbons.

Virginia police arrest suspects in shooting that left military couple dead
Fairfax police arrested Ronnie Keandre Marshall and D'Angelo Strand in the deaths of Col. Edward McDaniel Jr. and Brenda McDaniel
Fairfax County police have arrested two people suspected of killing a married military couple in Virginia Wednesday morning.
Police identified the suspects as 20-year-old Ronnie Keandre Marshall and D'Angelo Strand, 19.
"Two distinguished military veterans were gunned down in their front yard," Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news briefing Wednesday. "[They] served out community for many, many years. And they were shot and killed in cold blood in their own front yard."
Edward McDaniel Jr. and Brenda McDaniel, 55 and 63 years old, were shot to death outside their home in Springfield Wednesday morning, police said.
Eight felony charges have been filed, according to Fairfax's major crimes unit commander, Major Ed O'Carroll. The suspects each face two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of the use of a firearm in commission of a felony.
He said police received a tip Thursday on the whereabouts of a vehicle connected to the case after a local resident called in. At that time, they said they took an unnamed person of interest into custody.
"Thanks to the community, we got our offenders," O'Carroll said.
He also credited U.S. Marshals for assisting in the arrests.
Both McDaniels were Army physicians, and Edward was an active-duty colonel, O'Carroll said.Police said there had been a burglary call at the same home earlier in the week and that they believed the incidents were connected, police said.
Chief Davis said Thursday that police were unsure of a concrete motive but believed it had to do with a dispute stemming from the Monday incident. The suspects and a relative of the victims were co-workers, according to investigators.

Police are searching for suspects after a husband and wife with military experience were killed Wednesday morning in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Police Chief Kevin Davis told reporters Wednesday that officers responded to a "brutal double murder" that morning, explaining that a husband and wife were "gunned down in their front yard." First responders found two people inside the home who were physically unharmed.
Maj. Ed O'Carroll, bureau chief of Major Crimes Cyber and Forensics for Fairfax County police, said the 911 call came at about 9:20 a.m. and the two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. He identified the victims as Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63, of Springfield, Virginia.
"They did nothing wrong," said O'Carroll, asking for local residents to help identify the confirmed vehicle the suspect or suspects used to flee the scene: a light-colored 2018 Nissan Altima.
O'Carroll explained that authorities believe Wednesday's murders are likely connected to an attempted burglary that was reported Monday at the McDaniel residence. The investigation is ongoing, and the motive is unclear, though he said, "I think there's a direct correlation between who was there Monday and who was there today."
Both victims were military medical professionals, according to authorities. Edward's mother, Felice McDaniel, said, per The Washington Post, that he was a doctor at the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital. She added that Edward and Brenda have a 19-year-old son, plus Brenda has an older son from a past relationship.
Felice said of Edward, "He was one of the kindest and most generous human beings alive."
There is a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest of the shooter(s), according to WTOP, and those with information can call the police at 703-691-2131.

A manhunt was underway in Virginia on Wednesday after a husband and wife - both military veterans - were brutally murdered outside their home in Springfield, authorities said.
The couple were shot in cold blood in their front yard just before 9:30 a.m., Fairfax County police said.
"They did nothing wrong. They were tragically and horribly murdered in their neighborhood," Fairfax County police Maj. Ed O'Carroll said at an evening news conference.
O'Carroll identified the victims as Edward McDaniel Jr., 55, and Brenda McDaniel, 63. Both were military physicians, he said.
Edward McDaniel was an active Army colonel, FOX 5 of Washington D.C. reported.
Police had yet to identify the suspect or suspects who they believe killed the couple. Investigators were searching for a 2018 light-colored Nissan Altima with Maryland plate number 1EF1479.
"We still need to identify this killer, we need to get him off the streets," Fairfax County police Chief Kevin Davis said. "We think he's likely still local. ... The car may be parked in your neighborhood right now."
O'Carroll said police had yet to identify a motive for Wednesday's shooting.
"There's a lot of questions that we still have," he added. "The key is the car, but ultimately the key is the shooter or a second person."
A $10,000 reward was being offered for information in the case that leads to an arrest. Earlier in the day, Davis said authorities believed the "shooter or shooters" were known to a relative of the two victims.
At least one other family member was inside the home at the time of the shooting, which police said was directly related to an incident at the home earlier this week, according to FOX 5.
The killings marked the ninth and tenth homicides in Fairfax County this year.
"It's nine and 10 too many, O'Carroll said.
Springfield is located about 14 miles southwest of Washington, D.C.

USA Today names Baltimore 'the nation's most dangerous city' - Baltimore Sun
Feb 19, 2018 | 6:30 PM
Baltimore's highest-ever per capita homicide rate in 2017 also made it the deadliest big city in the country, USA Today reported Monday.
Though official data from the FBI won't be available until later in the year, USA Today reviewed the homicide rates in the nation's 50 largest cities and Baltimore came out on top. The 342 homicides the city experienced in 2017 were a 17 percent increase over the prior year, and translated to a rate of 56 killed per 100,000 people.
That easily outpaced New Orleans and Detroit, which both had about 40 killings per 100,000 people, according to the report.
Baltimore had more homicides last year than New York City, Philadelphia and Los Angeles, all considerably larger cities. Only Chicago, also a considerably larger city, had more.
USA Today used the nation's top 50 cities, which omits St. Louis, a city of about 315,000 people that had 205 killings in 2017. St. Louis' homicide rate of 65 would easily top Baltimore's rate.
[More news] In Baltimore, 19-year-old killed, 17-year-old shot just blocks from quadruple shooting a week earlier »
The review showed killings across the country decreased by at least 1 percent in large jurisdictions compared with 2016.
So far in 2018, Baltimore is seeing a decline in homicides. Through Sunday, 31 people had been killed, compared with 47 killed at the same time last year - a decline of about 34 percent. Other types of crime are also down across the board.
Mayor Catherine E. Pugh fired Police Commissioner Kevin Davis in late January, replacing him with department veteran Darryl De Sousa. State and federal authorities have been stepping up arrests using open warrants, and residents organized a recent Ceasefire weekend.

Raynor, 52, and Donna Fisher, 54, were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide outside a home the 500 block of Arundel Boulevard. The couple had two children and had been involved in a pending divorce for nearly a year."

FBI Special Agent David Raynor was suicided 3/7/18, while he was investigating why former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met this past June (2017) with Baltimore Police Department Detective Sean Suiter-who was a member of the wildly corrupt Baltimore police unit called the Gun Trace Task Force linked to the "Operation Fast and Furious" gun scandal covered up the Obama regime-but with Detective Suiter being murdered with his own gun on 15 November (2017) the day before he was due to testify before a US Federal Grand Jury.

>"Police Commissioner Kevin Davis revealed last week that Suiter was scheduled to testify before a federal grand jury, on the day after he was shot, in the case against several members of the Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force. Davis said federal authorities told him "in no uncertain terms" that Suiter was not a target of their investigation, and authorities have no reason to believe that Suiter's killing was connected to his pending testimony."
US Congressman Cummings after Detective Suiter's murder, rushed to FBI Director Christopher Wray where he implored him to make the investigation of Suiter's murder into "a top priority" and called on the FBI to "do everything in its power to help"-and that FBI Director Wray surprisingly replied to by saying that he was "very familiar with the Suiter situation".

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis says the car that nearly hit the officer was driven by a juvenile going over 120 miles per hour.
Fairfax Co. Police beg parents to remind their teens to drive responsibly after near fatal crash
New York Giants Winners & Losers Post-draft
FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - New video of a crash that sent two people to the hospital shows the moment an officer narrowly avoided being hit head-on by a speeding teen driver. Fairfax County Police released the video Tuesday in hopes of deterring speeders.
Dashcam footage of the close call shows a speeding driver spin out of control, and swerve into the opposite lane, nearly striking an officer who was out of his car talking to a driver he had pulled over.
Just before noon on Monday, a patrol officer was conducting a routine traffic stop on southbound Fairfax County Parkway, prior to Braddock Road. As the officer was approaching the driver from the passenger side, another car speeding northbound crossed over the median and smashed into the same car.
The officer just barely jumps out of the way to avoid being hit as the speeding driver crashes into the pulled-over car. He then calls for backup help and begins checking both drivers for injuries.
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said it is a miracle the officer is alive, and only sustained minor injuries. The chief said the black 2018 BMW M3 that caused the crash was driven by a 17-year-old going over 120 miles per hour.
"It was a rocket and then it became a missile," said Chief Davis, referring to that car.
The adult driver who had been pulled over on the traffic stop was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. They have since been released. The teen driver and their two passengers also sustained minor injuries.
The teen driver accused in the head-on crash stayed at the scene and is now facing charges for reckless driving.
"We have to call to attention the young drivers, the teen drivers who are responsible for an incredible number of excessive speed related crashes," said Fairfax County Police Deputy Chief Bob Blakely.
The crash comes as the police department is ramping up traffic enforcement efforts and outreach to high schools as more incidents involving teens go up.
Fairfax County Police say their evidence of this comes from how many tickets they've handed out to teen drivers, just this year.
Deputy Chief Blakely said, "62% more tickets to teen drivers for speeding offenses; 98% more for violating signs or signals, so stop signs red lights and even the speed limit; 181% increase in failing to pay full time attention, which is often associated with a crash."
Why Microsoft Uses AI to Fight Cyber Threats
In this instance, he says three teens were in the car. Earlier this year, two teens died and another was seriously hurt after a crash on Lee Chapel Road. Police said the teen driving, was going 100.7 mph.
"Year to date we have eight fatal crash victims. Three of those fatal crash victims were caused because of the driving behavior of a teen driver," said Blakely.
The Fairfax County Police Department hopes parents and guardians consider using this video as an opportunity to have a conversation with teen drivers about how their driving behavior can affect the lives of others.
"Parents need to take a minute and talk to our teen drivers and we all need to take a minute and make sure we're not going so fast we can't control our own motor vehicle," said Chief Davis.
