Ex-staffer killed himself outside of GOP Congresswoman's house, and police are unsure why
Shocking
In a bizarre, shocking, and saddening incident, a former staffer for freshman Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) appears to have shot and killed himself outside the Congresswoman's home, and police for now are puzzled at his motive.
The incident was first reported by the Dallas Morning News, who noted that police were called to Van Duyne's house on Wednesday afternoon after she called them, reporting that she heard gunshots outside her home and went outside to find a man on the sidewalk leading to the front porch of the home, who was apparently dead. The man was later identified as Chris Dillard, who served as a spokesman for Van Duyne's campaign until April of 2020.
Police say Van Duyne was at home at the time of the incident, but did not witness it. Irving police say that they have already searched Dillard's home, and can find no motive for his suicide, or its location. They also indicated that they did not find anything that would indicate that there is any further threat to Van Duyne.
A statement released by Van Duyne said, "I'm still shocked and grieving that Chris would take his life. We had known each other for years. He had been to my home numerous times for holiday parties, fantasy football draft parties, and get-togethers with friends. The last time I heard from him was over text in early January, to share pictures of his family. I've spoken with Chris's mother to offer my condolences and asked her how to support her during this difficult time. I'm devastated for her his daughter and grandchildren, we are praying for Chris's family and loved ones and ask that everyone please respect their privacy. Thank you."
Van Duyne previously served as mayor of Irving, Texas, and served as a regional director for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in the Trump administration. She stepped down from that position in 2019 to run for the seat that was being vacated by the retirement of former Rep. Kenny Marchant. Van Duyne was endorsed by President Trump in one of the most hotly contested races in the country, narrowly defeating Democrat Candace Valenzuela to win her first term in Congress.

Louie Gohmert joins three other Texas Republicans in vote against House resolution condemning QAnon
WASHINGTON - Four Texas Republicans in the U.S. House were on the losing end of a lopsided and bipartisan vote on Friday that approved a measure condemning the QAnon conspiracy theory movement.
The resolution, titled "Condemning QAnon and rejecting the conspiracy theories it promotes," passed 371 to 18. Among the 18 dissenters were Republican U.S. Reps. Jodey Arrington of Lubbock, Brian Babin of Woodville, Michael Burgess of Lewsiville and Bill Flores of Bryan.
Four other Texas Republican representatives did not cast votes: U.S. Reps. Michael Cloud of Victoria, Louie Gohmert of Tyler, Kenny Marchant of Coppell and Ron Wright of Arlington. (Wright is currently being treated for cancer.) The 27 other Texans serving in the U.S. House, including all 13 Texas Democrats, voted to condemn QAnon.
The FBI has identified the movement as a domestic terrorism threat. BuzzFeed reported earlier this week that followers of QAnon targeted the resolution's author, New Jersey Democratic U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski, with death threats. Malinowski's resolution condemned and rejected the conspiracy theories the movement promotes and included a list of crimes in which the perpetrators cited QAnon as a guiding inspiration. The resolution additionally pointed to FBI and U.S. military warnings about the movement's potential to foment political tension and radicalization.

Q Research General #12264: Antifa's Peaceful Block Party Edition
Texas Dem: 'Even If People Loot, So What? Burn It to the Ground'
When protests over the police killing of George Floyd devolved into looting, vandalism, and arson across America, destroying black lives, black livelihoods, and black monuments, Democrats and liberals shamefully downplayed or even excused the violence because the perpetrators agreed with their political agenda. Yet it seems none have proven quite as vocal as a Democrat running for U.S. House in Texas's 24th congressional district.
In a live digital event on Tuesday, Kim Olson complained about police snipers stationed on a roof at a protest she attended in Dallas, Texas.
"They had snipers on the roof, what the hell you got snipers on the roof for in a peaceful march? Even if people loot, so what? Burn it to the ground, if that's what it's gonna take to fix our nation," Olson said in video obtained by The Washington Examiner. "I don't think - but I'm just saying, what are you going to do? Shoot us as we protest?"
"I mean, we really have fundamentally pivoted the militarization of our police force. ... It used to be 'protect and serve,'" she complained.
Olson made the comment during a long answer to a question about her position on far-left calls to disband or defund police departments. The candidate began by admitting that while "defunding" is a "tough word," she supports shifting funding toward rehab centers and social workers.
"You can't just tackle the police, you've got to tackle some of the social injustice issues that are going on within our justice system," Olson said. "You can't train racism out of folks."
"This quote is being taken out of context," Rachel Perry, Olson's campaign manager, told the Washington Examiner. "As a combat vet, Colonel Olson knows first hand the human heartbreak of violence. She knows we cannot use force to fix a systemic problem of undue violence and discrimination perpetrated by those who are sworn to protect and serve. We have to rebuild from the ground up a color-blind public safety institution across America."
Olson is the front-runner in the Democratic nomination in Texas's 24th district, an open seat since Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas) is retiring. Cook Political Report rates the race a "Republican toss up" and Politico also describes it as a "toss-up." Marchant won reelection by about 3 points in 2018.
Olson, a military veteran, faces school board trustee Candace Valenzuela in a runoff election on July 14. The winner will face former Mayor Beth Van Duyne (R-Irving).
While Olson became one of the first women to attend and graduate from flight school, her service was not without scandal. When she was stationed in Iraq, the Pentagon accused her of directing contracts to a private security firm that she helped operate. She has denied profiting from the arrangement, but she did plead guilty to charges that included creating the appearance of a conflict of interest, paid a $3,500 fine, and retired with an honorable discharge.
While the campaign insisted that Olson's statement was taken out of context, that statement echoed a distressing trend among Democrats. Many have downplayed - if not excused - the destructive riots across America. As antifa militant rebels set up a rogue state in Seattle, Gov. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and Mayor Jenny Durkan not only defended the rebels as "peaceful" and "patriotic," but insisted it would be "illegal and unconstitutional" for President Donald Trump to suppress the armed insurrection.
Olson likely regrets her words, but the context does not excuse them. Democrats insist that America's institutions are fundamentally racist, and this narrative justifies a violent revolution. President Trump is right to counter that America is fundamentally good, although it is undeniably flawed. Trump has condemned the horrific killing of George Floyd and he has championed criminal justice reform. But he will not abide violent riots or rebellions in American cities, and Democrats shouldn't, either.

Democratic House candidate Kim Olson: 'If people loot, so what? Burn it to the ground'
A leading Democratic candidate in a closely watched House race brushed off looting and arson that occurred during nationwide unrest during protests about racism and police brutality sparked by the death of George Floyd.
"What the hell you got snipers on the roof for in a peaceful march?Even if people loot, so what? Burn it to the ground, you know,if that's what it's going to take to fix our nation," retired Air Force Col. Kim Olson said during a live digital event on Tuesday, shown in a clip obtained by the Washington Examiner.
"I don't think people want me to say that," added Olson, a Democratic candidate in Texas's 24th Congressional District, which covers much of the suburban area in between Fort Worth and Dallas.
Olson, 62, made the comment during a several-minute answer to a question about what she thought about far-left calls to disband or defund police departments.
Olson started by saying that while "defunding" is a "tough word," explaining that she supports prioritizing funding services such as rehab centers and social workers.
"You can't just tackle the police, you've got to tackle some of the social injustice issues that are going on within our justice system," Olson said. "You can't train racism out of folks."
She criticized highly militarized police forces, leading into the criticism of snipers on the roof during a recent march in Dallas and then making the comment about looting and riots.
"This quote is being taken out of context," Rachel Perry, Olson's campaign manager, said in a statement to the Washington Examiner on Wednesday.
Texas's 24th District will be an open seat in the November election since current Republican Rep. Kenny Marchant, who won reelection by about 3 points in 2018, is retiring at the end of his term.
The race is one of several dozen closely watched House seats this election cycle with the potential to flip from Republican to Democratic control. Cook Political Report rates the race as a "Republican toss up." Politico also calls it a toss-up.
Olson is the front-runner in the primary for the Democratic nomination but must defeat educator and school board trustee Candace Valenzuela in a runoff election on July 14.
The winner will face former Irving, Texas, Mayor Beth Van Duyne, who easily won her Republican primary contest earlier this year, in the general election.
The decision on whether to support Olson or Valenzuela in the Democratic runoff is a contentious issue among national Democratic operatives and lawmakers. Minority lawmakers have urged the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to support Valenzuela, who is Latina and African American and comes from humble upbringings, but the DCCC declined to do so.
Olson unsuccessfully ran to be Texas's agriculture commissioner in 2018, losing to Republican incumbent Sid Miller by about 5 points.
Her military career is a highlight of her resume - she was one of the first women to attend and graduate from military flight school - but it is also a potential liability. In the early 2000s, when she was stationed in Iraq, the Pentagon accused Olson of directing contracts to a private security firm that she helped operate. While Olson denies personally profiting from the arrangement, she pleaded guilty to charges that included creating the appearance of a conflict of interest, paid a $3,500 fine, and was permitted to retire with an honorable discharge. That history has not been a major issue in her campaigns or line of attack from her opponents.

Gaetz files ethics complaint against Pelosi echoing her words "no one is above the law"
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) announced that he is filing an ethics complaint against Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for "destroying" a copy of President Trump's speech after his State of the Union address.
"BREAKING: I'm filing an ethics complaint against @SpeakerPelosi for destroying @realDonaldTrump's State of the Union speech," Gaetz tweeted late Wednesday. "Her conduct was beneath the dignity of the House, and a potential violation of law (18 USC 2071)."
"Nobody is above the law. She must be held accountable," he added.
Gaetz also included two screenshots of the complaint he sent to House Ethics Committee Chairman Theodore Deutch (R-Fla.) and Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas), the ranking member on the committee.
In the complaint, Gaetz calls on the committee to open an investigation into what he described as "flagrant violation of decorum" committed by Pelosi when she ripped up a copy of the president's prepared speech at the end of his third State of the Union address Tuesday night.
"It is hard to overlook the symbolism of such a gesture - the sense that Speaker Pelosi was utterly dismissive of the President's achievements, and, more importantly, the achievements of the American people," Gaetz wrote.
Gaetz said Pelosi's gesture was "deeply" offensive and appeared to violate the House's Code of Official Conduct. In the complaint, Gaetz requested a criminal referral for the "potential violation" and said the Speaker's "unseemly behavior certainly warrants censure."
"The Speaker should not let her personal feelings about the President color her behavior as a leader in the United States Congress," he also wrote, "but last night, her actions have brought discredit on the entire House."
"This is a frivolous stunt from a Congressman desperate to get back in the President's good graces after he voted with Democrats and against the President on Iran," Pelosi's deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, said in a statement to The Hill. "We appreciate the irony of this particular Member making judgments about the 'dignity of the House.'"
Gaetz was among a handful of House lawmakers who crossed party lines last month on legislation designed to rein in Trump's ability to take military action against Iran.
Pelosi captured widespread attention earlier this week after she ripped up Trump's prepared remarks at the end of his State of the Union address.
When explaining the gesture during a closed-door caucus meeting on Wednesday, sources said Pelosi told lawmakers, "He shredded the truth, so I shredded his speech."
"You are supposed to talk about the State of the Union, not the state of your alleged mind," she also said then, after calling Trump's speech "a manifesto of mistruths."

A not-so-subtle warning to Hunter to skip the impeachment vote…
House Ethics Committee Warns Duncan Hunter Against Voting After Guilty Plea
The House Ethics Committee told Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who pleaded guilty in his criminal case this week, that he needs to stop voting.
Committee chair Ted Deutch (D-FL) and ranking member Kenny Marchant (R-TX) sent a letter to Hunter laying out a House rule mandating that convicted lawmakers "should refrain from voting on any question at a meeting of the House or of the Committee of the Whole House" unless they've been exonerated or reelected after their conviction.
"This provision of House Rules was promulgated to preserve public confidence in the legislative process when a sitting Member of Congress has been convicted of a serious crime," Deutch and Marchant wrote.
They warned Hunter that while the rule is not binding, "you risk subjecting yourself to action" by the committee and the House if he violates it.
On Tuesday, Hunter pleaded guilty in federal court to one count of conspiracy to steal campaign funds after he was indicted for using $250,000 in campaign donations on personal luxuries, including extramarital affairs.
The congressman, scheduled to be sentenced on March 17, faces up to five years in prison.

U.S. Rep. Kenny Marchant will not seek reelection, marking the fourth recent GOP retirement in Texas
Last year, Marchant only won reelection by a three percentage point margin.
Marchant, who was elected to Congress in 2004, is a founding member of the House Tea Party Caucus. He represents Texas' 24th Congressional District, which spans the northern suburbs of Fort Worth and Dallas. The district has historically been reliably red, but Marchant's margins of victory have grown thinner in recent elections. In 2016, he won by a comfortable two-digit margin. Last year, Marchant squeaked by with a 3 point win over Democrat Jan McDowell.
Before entering national office in 2005, Marchant led a successful small business and homebuilding career. He launched a career in local politics in 1980, serving as a Carrollton City Council member and Carrollton mayor before going on to 18 years in the Texas House.
In Washington, Marchant is known for quiet work. In his decade and a half on Capitol Hill, Marchant has climbed the ladder of influence on the Ways and Means Committee, where he was nearing subcommittee chairmanship, in addition to serving on the Ethics Committee.
The senior representative joins an exodus of Texas Republicans, including U.S. Rep. Pete Olson, U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway, and U.S. Rep. Will Hurd.

House Ethics Committee investigating Rep. Gaetz for tweet directed at Michael Cohen
The House Ethics Committee announced on Friday they will be investigating Rep. Matt Gaetz for the tweet he sent that targeted former Trump lawyer Micahel Cohen.
Prior to Cohen testifying to the House Oversight and Reform Committee in February, Gaetz tweeted, "Hey @MichaelCohen212 - Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she'll remain faithful when you're in prison. She's about to learn a lot…"
In a statement, Chairman Ted Deutch and Ranking Member Kenny Marchant said Gaetz declined to attend an in-person interview with the Committee. "Because Representative Gaetz did not provide the Committee with testimony, the Committee was unable to dispose of the complaint by the rule-based deadline. Accordingly, pursuant to House Rule XI, clause 3(b)(2), and Committee Rule 16(d), an Investigative Subcommittee has been established and the complaint against Representative Gaetz forwarded to it for consideration," their statement read.
Gaetz deleted the tweet and said it was not meant to be a threat to Cohen.

House Ethics Committee Investigating Rep. Gaetz For 'Threatening' Michael Cohen
The House Ethics Committee on Friday announced that it is investigating Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL) for attempting to 'intimidate' Trump's former-lawyer-turned-rat Michael Cohen ahead of his February testimony to Congress.
The Hill reported:
In a statement, House Ethics Committee Chairman Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas), the panel's ranking Republican, said that Gaetz declined the committee's request to appear before the committee for an in-person interview in May.
The Ethics Committee said it told Gaetz that it wouldn't be able to resolve the ethics complaint against him without his testimony and warned that if it couldn't dispose of the complaint by June 24, the rules would require formally opening an investigative subcommittee to review the allegations.
On February 26 of this year, Congressman Gaetz fired off a veiled threat to Michael Cohen in a since-deleted tweet.
"Hey @MichaelCohen212 - Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she'll remain faithful when you're in prison. She's about to learn a lot..." Gaetz previously tweeted.
Prior to deleting the tweet, Gaetz defended it by telling reporters, "we're witness testing not witness tampering."
"And when witnesses come before Congress, their truthfulness and veracity are in question and we have the opportunity to test them," Gaetz said.
Pelosi came out swinging and said lawmakers' comments "on social media or in the press can adversely affect the ability of the House Committees to obtain the truthful and complete information necessary to fulfill their duties."
Gaetz later apologized to Speaker Pelosi, "Speaker, I want to get the truth too. While it is important 2 create context around the testimony of liars like Michael Cohen, it was NOT my intent to threaten, as some believe I did. I'm deleting the tweet & I should have chosen words that better showed my intent. I'm sorry."
So the House Ethics Committee is investigating Gaetz over a tweet, yet Adam Schiff, who met with Fusion GPS's Glenn Simpson, a witness in the investigation into 'Trump-Russia' still has not been questioned or hit with an ethics violation.
Tom Fitton has repeatedly sounded the alarm on Adam Schiff's ethics violations. We have a two-tiered justice system in this country. There is one set of rules for Democrats and another set of rules for Republicans and Trump supporters.
