Rockets projected onto Washington Monument for America's 250th

January 1, 2026 - The towering image of a full-size Saturn V moon rocket returned to the face of the Washington Monument on New Year's Eve, this time to mark 250 years since the founding of the United States.
The iconic black and white booster, along with other scenes from NASA and U.S. history, were projected onto the obelisk - the tallest landmark in the nation's capital - as a special "birthday candle" for the country.
The "Illumination of America," as the show was titled according to the White House, marked only the second time in history that the 555-foot-tall (169-meter) Washington Monument has been been lit as such.

"Freedom 250 is ringing in the New Year by illuminating the story of America, including reaching for the stars, and highlighting our achievements in space, on the Washington Monument," announced NASA in a social media post referencing the organization leading the national semiquincentennial celebration.
The 25-minute presentation debuted Wednesday (Dec. 31) and is set to continue through Monday, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. EST daily, with shows starting every hour on the hour.

In July 2019, the Saturn V was first projected on the Washington Monument as part of a different production put on by the Smithsonian for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
This time the rocket, along with the other imagery, can be seen from all sides of the monument, rather than just the National Mall face.

"The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation - 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence," Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, said in a statement.
"We invite every American - and every friend of America - to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit."

'The sky has never been the limit'
The 363-foot-tall (110-meter) Saturn V rocket first appears in a segment following the Wright brothers' invention of the airplane 66 years earlier.
Apollo 11 commentator Jack King's voice is heard counting down to the depicted liftoff. The launch then leads into scenes of the Apollo 11 spacecraft approaching the moon and landing on its surface in 1969.
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin are shown walking on the moon and deploying the U.S. flag.

"American astronauts broke free from the Earth, stretched their hands through the endless void and planted the stars and stripes on the face of the moon," says the show's narrator, as local voice over actor who was not identified. "America brought mankind into the Space Age."
The program ends with a computer-generated animation of the United States as seen from space.
"And perhaps someday, our descendants will plant the American flag on distant worlds, carrying the light of liberty to the farthest corners of creation, reminding all nations that for the United States of America there is no frontier too far, no dream too bold, no horizon beyond our reach," narrates the actor.

Sign of things to come
Separate from the formal show, a projection of NASA's next generation rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), was also seen on the monument Wednesday night.

The 322-foot-tall (98-meter) SLS appeared as a full-size static image, configured similarly to how it will look when it lifts off with the first astronauts to fly by the moon in more than 50 years.
NASA's Artemis II crew are slated to travel farther into space than any humans have ever done so before after launching as soon as February and no later than April, according to NASA.

The SLS rendering used for the monument's illumination was missing, ironically, a recent addition to the real rocket's markings - the official "America 250" logo of the semiquincentennial celebration, which NASA had painted on each of the twin, side-mounted solid rocket boosters.
"The pioneering spirit of the American people … beckons us to begin new journeys of discovery," says the narrator towards the show's conclusion, "daring us once again to dream the impossible and imagine the wonders waiting among the stars."

Taiwan's TSMC to build $12 billion semiconductor plant in U.S.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced that it intends to spend $12 billion to build and operate a semiconductor factory in Arizona.

"These chips will power everything from artificial intelligence to 5G base stations to F-35s," Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo said in a May 14 statement.

He called the deal "a game changer for the U.S. semiconductor industry that will bolster American national security and our economic prosperity."

A vital technology

Semiconductors are "the backbone to the entire digital industry," explained Mung Chiang, the science and technology adviser to Pompeo, at a May 15 State Department briefing.

TSMC said construction is expected to start in 2021 and chip production to start in 2024. The plant will create over 1,600 high-tech professional jobs directly and thousands of indirect jobs. TSMC will also train hundreds of U.S. employees on its most advanced process technologies in Taiwan and expand its research efforts in the United States as part of the investment.

"The strong investment climate in the United States and its talented workforce make this and future investments in the U.S. attractive to TSMC," the company said in a statement.

The Arizona facility would be TSMC's second factory in the United States alongside the one it operates in Camas, Washington. TSMC also has design centers in Austin, Texas, and San Jose, California.

5G national security

This decision to build a factory in the United States comes at a time when "China is competing to dominate cutting-edge technology and control critical industries," Pompeo said.

Manufacturing this technology in the United States will "help ensure American leadership in technologies of the future," said Keith Krach, under secretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment.

Once built, Krach said, the factory will be the world's most advanced five-nanometer chip fabrication facility.

The plant is also one part of a "5G national security trifecta," because it means that "chips critical to our lives and national security will once again be made in America," Krach said.

The other parts of the 5G national security trifecta, Krach explained, are the tightening of export rules for untrustworthy Chinese companies, such as Huawei Technologies Company, and the 5G Clean Path initiative.

Pompeo said building semiconductors in the United States "will increase U.S. economic independence, bolster our safety and competitiveness, and strengthen our leadership in high-tech manufacturing."

Mariannette Miller-Meeks Forces TikTok CEO to Admit Chinese App Tracks Americans' Keystrokes

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew admitted to Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks that the Chinese app tracks users' keystrokes during a House Committee on Energy and Commerce hearing on Thursday.

"Does TikTok track users' individual keystrokes?" Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-IA) asked, to which Chew responded by stating, "Only for security purposes, for example, like detecting bots."

After Miller-Meeks asked Chew to clarify that "the only purpose that you would monitor keystrokes is for security purposes," the TikTok CEO said, "I can get back to you on the specifics," and then deflected, by saying other companies behave in a similar way.

In a recent interview with GMA3: What You Need to Know, former Trump official Keith Krach warned that TikTok is able to track users' keystrokes.

"That means they have access to your passwords, all your data, they have access to your health records, your bank records, they have access to your geopolitical information or your geospatial information," Krach said. "That means that they can track where you are, where you've been, and where you're going."

"Look at it as a digital virus," he added. "And the only cure for this; the only vaccine for this is a total ban."

Some might agree with Chew's suggestion that U.S. social media companies engage in the same behavior as TikTok, but the difference is that U.S. companies can be held responsible under U.S. laws, whether that takes the form of action by Congress or regulators, whereas the same is not possible with TikTok.

Elsewhere during Thursday's hearing, Chew said "I don't think that 'spying' is the right way to describe" the alleged Chinese surveillance of Americans using his company's social media platform.

State Department Official To Keynote Pro-China Gala

U.S.-China Business Council fights legislation to punish China for human-rights abuses

A top State Department official is set to deliver the keynote address at a gala hosted by a pro-China group that wants to give the country a free pass on human-rights abuses.

Jose Fernandez, the undersecretary for economic growth, energy, and the environment, will speak at the U.S.-China Business Council gala on Thursday about the Biden administration's bilateral approach to China. Chinese ambassador Qin Gang will also speak at the event, which is sponsored by the council's corporate donors.

The council is one of Beijing's most effective allies in Washington. The group, which represents hundreds of American companies that do business in China, has lobbied Congress and the White House to soften language on bills that would sanction China over human-rights abuses against Uyghurs, according to Politico. The Washington Post reported that council officials took part in a conference call this week with Chinese officials who urged American companies to continue their support for the Olympic Games in Beijing. Calls to boycott the games have grown following the disappearance of a Chinese tennis professional who alleged she was raped by a Chinese Communist Party official.

Fernandez's address to the pro-China trade group comes as the Biden administration and congressional Democrats signal a willingness to ignore China's human-rights record in order to win cooperation on climate change. The White House has pressured lawmakers to kill a bill that would restrict imports on goods made in Xinjiang, where the Chinese government is carrying out genocide against Uyghurs. Senate Democrats quietly excluded the bill from consideration on Wednesday, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

Fernandez has been far less vocal about China's human-rights record than his predecessor, Keith Krach. The Twitter account for the undersecretary for economic growth, energy and the environment has not mentioned China since Jan. 20, 2021. A review of the account shows Krach frequently criticized the Chinese Communist Party and China's repression of Uyghurs.

Some of the country's biggest companies-JPMorgan Chase, Boeing, Ford, and GM-are sponsoring the gala. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon was forced to apologize last week after he joked that his company will likely outlast the Communist Party in China. The NBA, another gala sponsor, has come under fire for turning a blind eye to China's human-rights record.

The council has partnered with progressive and isolationist groups to thwart anti-China bills. According to Politico, the council collaborated with the antiwar group Justice is Global to urge Congress to oppose legislation that might undercut climate negotiations with China. In February, the council's chief lobbyist, Anna Ashton, took part in a discussion with a Justice is Global cofounder and a then-senior fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, an isolationist group funded by Charles Koch and George Soros.

The Quincy Institute fellow, Rachel Esplin Odell, joined the State Department in August. The Free Beacon reported that Odell has downplayed China's national security threat to the United States and has criticized efforts to hold Beijing accountable for the coronavirus pandemic.

The State Department did not respond to a request for comment about Fernandez's participation in the gala.

In the global race for diplomatic and economic influence, China continues to try to outdo the United States. A big part of that influence is simply having a physical presence around the world - and China is at the top.

In 2019, China surpassed the United States as the country with the greatest number of diplomatic posts around the world, with 276 to America's 273. As of September 2020, the U.S. State Department had 276 embassies, consulates, missions, and offices in 195 different countries, while China continued to grow its lead and currently lists 282 embassies, consulates, and missions around the world.

In an interview with American Military News, Keith Krach, former Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, and former CEO of DocuSign, said the number of Chinese diplomatic outposts is a factor, "Because this epic battle between authoritarianism and freedom is going on in every single country and on many fronts, so if you don't show, you don't win."

Despite the actions of all European countries, Ukraine decided not to cancel any flights to the UK, despite the new, more infectious strain of COVID-19 being discovered there.

"We have a visa regime with the UK which limits the number of passengers traveling between our countries. Currently, flights are performed mainly for Ukrainians studying abroad to return home for the Christmas holidays," Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Vladyslav Kryklii posted on Telegram.

The minister noted that Ukraine will monitor the situation with COVID-19 in the UK and change this decision if necessary.

It is, however, refreshing to see how much one's friends care for him, and it's also showing how little democratic elections make a difference when the decision-making mechanisms aren't even present in the country, but rather decisions are "imported" from abroad.

US Navy Rear Admiral Reportedly Makes Unannounced Visit to Taiwan

According to Reuters, US Rear Admiral Michael Studeman paid an unannounced visit to Taiwan in a move that is thought be some to likely prompt criticism from Beijing. The Pentagon reportedly has declined to comment.

A two-star US Navy admiral in charge of American military intelligence in the Asia-Pacific region visited Taiwan without announcement, Reuters reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources claiming to be familiar with the situation.

The anonymous sources, said to include an unnamed Taiwanese official, said that the visitor was Rear Admiral Michael Studeman, a director of J2 at the US Indo-Pacific Command.

According to the report, The Pentagon and the Taiwanese Defence Ministry, when approached by Reuters, declined to comment on the alleged visit. Taiwan's Foreign Ministry reportedly confirmed that a US official arrived in Taiwan but did not elaborate, only noting that the visit was not made public.

Typically, Beijing objects to US officials visiting Taiwan. Earlier in the week, the government of Chinese President Xi Jinping slammed US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Andrew Wheeler for an announced December 2020 visit.

"China is firmly opposed to any official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan", Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Friday.

Beijing considers Taiwan to be a part of China, while Taiwan refers to itself as Republic of China (ROC). Beijing is highly critical of countries engaging in official relations with Taiwan, consistently claiming its "One-China" principle is rule of law for the island. The policy claims that only one sovereign state can be named "China".

The United States, on the State Department website, notes that the US "enjoys a robust unofficial relationship" with Taiwan, noting that it "does not support Taiwan independence" and insisting it "provides no development assistance to Taiwan". US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently claimed, however, that both Democrats and Republicans in the US recognise Taipei as being separate from mainland China.

During the year, two US officials have visited Taiwan; the Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, Keith Krach, and Health Secretary Alex Azar.

Taiwan's United Daily News published pictures of an unmarked private jet, which it identified as being a U.S. military aircraft, arriving at Taipei's downtown Songshan airport, and what appeared to be officials waiting at its VIP terminal.

Data on the flight-tracking website planefinder.net showed a private flight arriving from Hawaii into Songshan airport late Sunday afternoon, shortly before the United Daily News published the pictures on its website. The United States, like most countries, has no formal diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan, but is the democratic island's most important international backer and supplier of arms.

Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang said last week the cabinet-level head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Andrew Wheeler, will visit Taiwan. U.S. media said that trip is likely next month.

TAIPEI (REUTERS) - A United States official has arrived in Taiwan, the island's foreign ministry said on Sunday (Nov 22), adding that it could not provide details, as the trip has not been made public, though it did deny a media report that the CIA chief was in town.

China, which claims democratically run Taiwan as its own territory, reacted with fury when the US Health Secretary Alex Azar came to Taipei in August, followed by US Undersecretary of State Keith Krach in September, sending fighter jets near the island each time.

The Trump administration has ramped up support for Taiwan, including with new arms sales, alarming China.

In a brief statement, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said there were frequent interactions with the US and that "we welcome the visit of the US official".

"But as this itinerary has not been made public, based on mutual trust between Taiwan and the United States, the Foreign Ministry has no further explanation or comment," it added.

However, it said in a separate statement that Taiwan media reports a delegation lead by CIA chief Gina Haspel had arrived in Taiwan were untrue, and that Ms Haspel had no plans to come.

Stoked by the second visit to the renegade Chinese island by a senior US official in the last couple of months, and the recent announcement of a massive package of pending weapons sales by the US, the last week has been another intense period of live-fire military drills and mutual recriminations. Meanwhile, Japan's new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Friday he had agreed with Chinese President Xi Jinping to pursue high-level contacts in a bid to promote regional and international stability.

China has stepped up its military flights near Taiwan, including numerous incursions across the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait, in the weeks following the announcement by the Trump administration that the US is planning a major weapons sale to the renegade island, probably including cruise missiles, drones and mines.

China has threatened or entered into Taiwan's airspace 46 times in the past nine days, the island's defence ministry said.

On Thursday, an aircraft of the People's Liberation Army entered the island's air defence identification zone, thought to be a Yun-8 anti-submarine aircraft. Taiwan's Ministry of Defence broadcast radio warnings, scrambled fighters, and deployed anti-aircraft missile systems in response. LINK

Taiwan's defence ministry said China's aerial incursions were at their most intense at the end of last week as Keith Krach, the US undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy and the environment, arrived on the island for an official visit.

Chinese officials stated that China has been reacting to what Beijing has called 'collusion' between Taiwan and the United States, and to protect China's sovereignty, in response to Krach's visit last week to Taipei.

In response to the spike in hostile aerial activity, Taiwan's armed forces held military drills on one of its offshore islands close to China on Thursday and Friday. Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the drills to repel a landing took place on the Matsu archipelago, which lies just offshore the Chinese city of Fuzhou.

The drills took place across the archipelago involving the use of cannons and machine guns, the ministry added, accompanied by pictures of the exercises.

Taiwan has held Matsu, along with Kinmen further down the coast, since defeated Nationalist forces fled to Taiwan in 1949 at the end of the Chinese civil war.

When Taiwan and China last joined battle on a large scale in 1958 it was around Matsu and Kinmen, with Chinese forces carrying out more than a month of bombardments, including naval and air battles...

Both are considered by experts as likely targets for Chinese invasion in any war with Taiwan due to their proximity to China. LINK

The South China Morning Post reports that Taiwan has also test-fired missiles off its eastern and southern coasts following military manoeuvres staged by Beijing near the self-ruled island in recent days.

PLA Friday drills not warning, but rehearsal for Taiwan takeover: Global Times editorial

The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is conducting a real-combat military exercise near the Taiwan Straits starting Friday. Taiwan media reported that starting 7:16 am, aircraft of the PLA were approaching Taiwan island from four directions: the southwest, west, northwest and north of the island. Taiwan reportedly made 22 broadcasts to "dispel" the PLA aircraft, and the island used "airspace" instead of "air zone" or "air defense identification zone" in its broadcasts. The "Taiwan defense department" said 18 Chinese aircraft appeared in the Taiwan Straits, with some crossing the "middle-line."

From our point of view, the PLA is still restrained. Every time a high-ranking US official visits Taiwan, the fighter jets of the PLA should be one step closer to the island. If the US secretary of state or secretary of defense comes to Taiwan, the PLA should fly its aircraft over the island and conduct exercises above it. The missiles we test should also fly over Taiwan, even its "Presidential Office Building." If Taiwan authorities continue to act aggressively, such scenarios will definitely come true.

The military exercise sent two prominent signals. First, China's Ministry of National Defense spokesperson made it clear that the exercise is aimed at the current situation in the Taiwan Straits, which refers to the frequent collusion between the US and the island of Taiwan, the visit of US Undersecretary of State Keith Krach to Taiwan in particular. This indicates that the PLA won't be restrained in words anymore. Our target of deterrence is collusion between the US and the island. It shows China's upgraded determination and will.

Second, the response of the PLA is extremely quick. Taiwan and the US did not officially announce Krach's visit until he boarded the plane. Krach arrived in Taiwan Thursday. There was no announcement on the military exercise of the PLA in advance. It's more likely the exercise was a last-minute decision.

That a massive action can be organized in such a short time sends a strong signal. It shows that the PLA has the ability to mobilize and organize a military action targeted at Taiwan in a very short period of time. They are rehearsals on taking over Taiwan. What is needed is a political reason that can turn them into real battle to smash Taiwan independence forces.

The collusion between the US and Taiwan island is becoming the most prominent source of turbulence in the Taiwan Straits. The PLA military exercise this time further focused on deterrence and a strike. If the US and Taiwan island think they can realize "normalization" of relations by adopting "salami tactics," they will be plunged into peril and risks. The mainland is determined to take all necessary means, including military options, to prevent the US and the island from upgrading their provocations.

The PLA has lifted the curtain on real-combat military exercises targeted at Taiwan, and the scale of such exercises is bound to expand in the future and meet the requirements for substantive strikes against Taiwan. In fact, the Friday exercise is a landmark in the struggle across the Taiwan Straits.

The US and Taiwan must not misjudge the situation, or believe the exercise is a bluff. Should they continue to make provocations, a war will inevitably break out. Those who have underestimated China's determination recently have all paid the price. China decisively put forward the implementation of the national security law for Hong Kong. China has shown that it doesn't fear war on the China-India border. The Taiwan Straits is by no means a place where separatists can act recklessly. If Taiwan authorities try, they will definitely be met with the mainland's military solutions.

Taiwan is a small place. It has no conditions for a modern military confrontation. Taiwan independence is a dead end.

U.S. Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Keith Krach arrived in Taipei on Thursday for a three-day visit, the most senior State Department official to come to Taiwan in four decades - which China had said would prompt a "necessary response". Beijing has watched with growing alarm the ever-closer relationship between Taipei and Washington, and has stepped up military exercises near the island, including two days of large-scale air and sea drills last week.

With a U.S. presidential election looming in November, Sino-U.S. relations are under huge strain from a trade war, U.S. digital security concerns and the coronavirus pandemic. Taiwan said 18 Chinese aircraft were involved on Friday, a far larger number than it has previously announced for such encounters.

"Sep. 18, two H-6 bombers, eight J-16 fighters, four J-10 fighters and four J-11 fighters crossed the midline of the TaiwanStrait and entered Taiwan's southwest ADIZ," the defence ministry said in an English-language tweet. "ROCAF scrambled fighters, and deployed air defence missile system to monitor the activities." The ROCAF, Taiwan's air force, has scrambled frequently in recent months in response to Chinese intrusions.

The ministry showed a map of the flight paths of Chinese jets crossing the Taiwan Strait mid-line, which normally combat aircraft from both sides avoid passing through. Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper said Taiwan air force jets had scrambled 17 times on Friday morning over four hours, warning China's air force to stay away. It also showed a picture of missiles being loaded onto an F-16 fighter at the Hualien air base on Taiwan's east coast. In Beijing, Chinese Defence Ministry spokesman Ren Guoqiang said Friday's manoeuvres, about which he gave no details, involved the People's Liberation Army's eastern theatre command.

"They are a reasonable, necessary action aimed at the current situation in the Taiwan Strait and protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Ren said. He said Taiwan was a purely internal Chinese affair and accused its ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of stepping up "collusion" with the United States.

Trying to "use Taiwan to control China" or "rely on foreigners to build oneself up" was wishful thinking and futile. "Those who play with fire will get burnt," Ren said Taiwan's presidential office urged China to exercise restraint, and urged the Taiwanese not to be alarmed, saying the military had a grasp on the situation.

Hu Xijin, editor of China's widely read state-backed Global Times tabloid, wrote on his Weibo microblog that the drills were preparation for an attack on Taiwan should the need arise, and that they enabled intelligence-gathering about Taiwan's defence systems. "If the U.S. secretary of state or defence secretary visits Taiwan, People's Liberation Army fighters should fly over Taiwan island, and directly exercise in the skies above it," he added.

Chinese fighter jets briefly crossed the mid-line of the Taiwan Strait last month as the U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar was in Taipei, and last week China carried out two days of large-scale drills off Taiwan's southwestern coast. The United States, like most countries, has official ties only with China, not Taiwan, though Washington is the island's main arms supplier and most important international backer.

This week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations had lunch with Taiwan's top envoy in New York. China's U.N. mission said it had lodged "stern representations" over the meeting.

The Trump administration is locked in an effort to divest from Chinese technology firms and push its allies to do the same, according to the senior administration official leading what he described as an unprecedented effort to combat China's dominance in the tech space.

Concerns are mounting in Washington, D.C., over China's proliferation of key technologies that permit it to spy on citizens across the globe, including in the United States. From social media applications such as TikTok to Beijing's 5G efforts with Huawei, Chinese technology has stormed the globe, providing a cheaper alternative to services provided by Western companies. Yet these savings come with risks, Keith Krach, the State Department's undersecretary of state for economic growth, energy, and the environment, told the Washington Free Beacon. Krach is the principal point man in the administration's multi-pronged effort to challenge China on the tech front.

"The CCP is a bully. We know when bullies are confronted, they back down," Krach said. "They really back down when you confront them, and you have all your friends by your side."

This approach marks a significant departure from past administrations that sought to play nice with China.

The administration's new approach centers on building a coalition of allies committed to icing China out of their tech sectors. Portions of this effort have unfolded in public, particularly the recent row between the United States and United Kingdom over its flirtation with Huawei, China's 5G powerhouse. The United States exerted great diplomatic pressure to extract guarantees from Britain that it would ban Huawei from operating the country's next-generation 5G cellular networks. This battle continues to unfold across the globe with a host of countries and private companies.

US Launches Soft Capital Control Attack On Beijing, "Urges" Colleges To Sell Chinese Stocks

One day after Trump activated what Bloomberg described as the "nuclear option" when the US announced that Huawei can't access US technology directly or indirectly, an action which leaves it in extremely difficult circumstances, the U.S. State Department has escalated the Cold War with China yet again, with Bloomberg reporting that the US is now asking colleges and universities to divest from Chinese holdings in their endowments, "warning schools in a letter Tuesday to get ahead of potentially more onerous measures on holding the shares."

As Bloomberg explains, "Tuesday's warning is part of a larger campaign by U.S. officials to slow the money that has flowed from investment funds into Chinese companies. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo told state governors in February that some pension funds are playing into China's hands."

"Boards of U.S. university endowments would be prudent to divest from People's Republic of China firms' stocks in the likely outcome that enhanced listing standards lead to a wholesale de-listing of PRC firms from U.S. exchanges by the end of next year," wrote Keith Krach, undersecretary for economic growth, energy and the environment, in the letter addressed to the board of directors of American universities and colleges, and viewed by Bloomberg.

"Holding these stocks also runs the high risks associated with PRC companies having to restate financials," he said.

The latest broadside against Beijing has seen Trump tightening limits on Chinese university students, ordering new restrictions in June that canceled the U.S. visas of certain graduate students and university researchers; and now he is limiting college exposure to Chinese stocks. Also earlier this month, the US went after two of China's largest tech companies with executive orders prohibiting U.S. persons and companies from doing business with ByteDance's TikTok video app and Tencent Holdings's WeChat messaging service.

As reported previously, US regulators recently urged American stock exchanges to set new rules that could trigger the delisting of Chinese companies, following mounting concerns that investors are being exposed to frauds.

As part of the soft (which is getting "harder" however by the day) capital controls imposed on China, in addition to venture capital, endowments have directed growing portions of their passive investments into Chinese companies that US politicians say are linked to human rights abuses and national security threats. Recently, MSCI added Chinese stocks to its benchmark emerging markets index, amid a chorus of allegations that MSCI is now just another corrupt Chinese puppet.

Meanwhile, according to the most recent data compiled by the National Association of College and University Business Officers for the year ended June 2019, foreign equities made up 13.9% of college endowments with more than $1 billion.

'Blatant Corruption': Jesus College at Cambridge Took £155,000 from Huawei to Fund Paper

A freedom of information request has revealed that Jesus College at Cambridge University received £155,000 from controversial Chinese tech firm Huawei to fund a white paper.

Last October, representatives of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) linked Huawei met at the college alongside business leaders, academics, and political figures to discuss the need for "transnational governance" in developing standards for communications and technology, and that governments need to "consider differences in the normative standards accepted by different countries".

The ensuing white paper from the symposium was in part funded by Huawei, which donated £155,000 to the college's UK-China Global Issues Dialogue Centre, according to The Times. Huwaei was disclosed initially to be a backer of the project, but the amount of money spent by the Chinese firm was not revealed until this week.

It was also revealed under freedom of information laws that Jesus College had accepted £200,000 in September of 2018 from an agency within China's State Council, the Communist Party's top governing body, to help fund the establishment of the UK-China Global Issues Dialogue Centre at the college.

Jesus College received an additional £55,000 in Chinese state-backed money in order to establish a training course for bosses of Chinese state-owned companies at its China Centre, a separate entity at the college.

The director of the China Centre, Professor Peter Nolan, became Cambridge University's first "Chong Hua" professor, after the position was reportedly established with the help of a £3.7 million donation from the daughter of the former Chinese prime minister Wen Jiabao.

In response to the revelations, Conservative MP and foreign affairs committee member Bob Seely said: "You've got to wonder if this money is influencing their intellectual rigour."

Tory MP Neil O'Brien described it as "blatant corruption", warning that "there will be more of this out there."

Former Labour Party Transport Secretary Lord Andrew Adonis added: "Jesus College, Cambridge should not have accepted this Chinese state funding in return for this obvious endorsement."

Jesus College denied any wrongdoing, saying the college "always upholds the principle of academic freedom when entering a partnership agreement. It was made very clear [in February] that the report was funded by Huawei, and we would like to reiterate that the company was in no way able to shape or veto the publication's views, research findings or conclusions."

"We are proud of our partnerships with world-leading universities and researchers here in the UK," a Huawei spokesperson said.

In June, the Trump administration warned the British government that they were on a "slippery slope" by reportedly allowing Huawei to construct a £400 million research and development centre outside of Cambridge.

Keith Krach, the U.S. Under-Secretary of State for Economic Growth, declared that Huawei is "an extension of the Chinese government," warning that "they are after the people and technology. They want to co-opt the researchers and talent from one of the most prestigious universities."

Tensions over China threaten U.S.-U.K. trade deal

The latest source of friction between the transatlantic allies is the recent approval for Chinese tech giant Huawei to construct a $500 million research and development center near the university city of Cambridge.

Chinese tech giant Huawei continues to drive a wedge between the U.S. and the U.K., this time over a $500 million research and development center near the world-renowned university city of Cambridge.

Planning permission was granted on Thursday for the construction of the 550-acre, semi-conductor design center on land Huawei acquired for $47 million in 2019.

U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth Keith Krach has raised concerns about the location of the facility. "They want to co-opt the researchers and talent from one of the most prestigious universities," Krach told The Times. "They want to get their hands on the technology and [intellectual property] to take back to China,"

The vice president of Huawei, Victor Zhang, strongly disagreed. "Any suggestion that work at the Cambridge R&D center would be in contravention of the unjustified U.S. sanctions is simply irresponsible and not true," Zhang said in the same article.

Anxiety over the U.K.'s reliance on Chinese technology grew after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced at the beginning of this year that Huawei would become a major supplier for Britain's new 5G network.

"There is no reason why we shouldn't have technological progress here in the U.K. ... but also protect our security interests, and protect our key security partnerships with other security powers around the world," Johnson told the Guardian.

Trump Admin: UK on 'Slippery Slope' After Allowing Huawei to Build British Facility

The Trump administration slammed Huawei's planned construction of a £400 million research and development centre near Cambridge, saying that the UK is on a "slippery slope" by continuing to allow the Chinese tech firm to operate in the country.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is reported to be "really furious" about the planned project and the American Ambassador to the UK, Woody Johnson, is expected to relay the concerns of the Trump administration with the British government.

The American under-secretary of state for economic growth, Keith Krach, said that Huawei is "an extension of the Chinese government", and therefore called the British government "to put the whole thing in perspective - aggressive tactics of the Chinese Communist Party, because it all starts from there".

"They are after the people and technology. They want to co-opt the researchers and talent from one of the most prestigious universities. They want to get their hands on the technology and IP [intellectual property] to take back to China," Mr Krach told The Times.

"Their stated playbook is to 'seduce with money, and reinforce with intimidation and retaliation'. It's textbook. Here comes the carrot, here comes the stick. We are really concerned. It is about UK national security," he added.

This week, Huawei is expected to receive planning permission from the government to start construction on the facility, which will be located just miles away from Cambridge University as well as the Japanese-owned semiconductor firm ARM Holdings.

The former first secretary of state Damian Green warned that the move was "clearly designed to influence the debate" around Huawei's involvement in Britain's 5G network.

"The government calls Huawei a high-risk vendor and I want to see a path towards zero involvement from Huawei in the 5G network," Mr Green said.

Pompeo calls Nasdaq's strict rules a model to guard against fraudulent Chinese companies

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday warned American investors against fraudulent accounting practices at China-based companies and said the Nasdaq's recent decision to tighten listing rules for such players should be "a model" for all other exchanges around the world. His remarks on the issue, reported first by Reuters before being delivered via a statement, illustrate the Trump administration's desire to make it harder for some Chinese companies to trade on exchanges outside of China. President Donald Trump issued a memorandum on Thursday calling for recommendations to be issued within 60 days to protect U.S. investors from what he said was China's failure to allow audits of U.S.-listed Chinese companies.

"We must take firm, orderly action to end the Chinese practice of flouting American transparency requirements without negatively affecting American investors and financial markets," Trump wrote.

The statements mark the latest flashpoint in U.S.-China relations at a time of escalating tensions between the world's two largest economies over trade, the coronavirus pandemic and Hong Kong. "American investors should not be subjected to hidden and undue risks associated with companies that do not abide by the same rules as U.S. firms," Pompeo said in his statement. "Nasdaq's action should serve as a model for other exchanges in the United States, and around the world."

"I applaud Nasdaq for requiring auditing firms to ensure all listed companies comply with international reporting and inspection standards," Pompeo added. Nasdaq Inc (NDAQ.O) took action last month and tightened listing rules, in a bid to curb initial public offerings of Chinese companies closely held by insiders and with opaque accounting.

Nasdaq Chief Executive Adena Friedman said on Thursday addressing the overseas accounting issues is a matter for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The exchange's tightening of listing standards came after Chinese coffeehouse chain Luckin Coffee Inc (LK.O), which had a U.S. IPO in early 2019, announced that an internal investigation showed its chief operating officer and other employees fabricated sales deals.

Trump said last week his administration would begin the process of eliminating special U.S. treatment for Hong Kong to punish China, saying Beijing's move to impose new national security legislation meant the territory no longer warranted U.S. economic privileges. He also said he was instructing a presidential working group to study the differing practices of Chinese companies listed on the U.S. financial markets, with the goal of protecting American investors.

"The real issue is the lack of transparency and the lack of disclosure to the American investors," Keith Krach, undersecretary for economic growth, energy and the environment at the U.S. State Department, told Reuters on Wednesday. "No country should be allowed to lie to the American investors to create an unfair advantage, especially when operating in American markets," Krach said.

Many U.S.-listed Chinese firms will likely list on the Hong Kong exchange this year, in part because of U.S. political pressure, the head of the exchange said Thursday.

The SEC has been locked in a decade-long struggle with the Chinese government to inspect audits of U.S.-listed Chinese companies.

Reuters reported on Dec. 17 that President Donald Trump planned to attend the annual Davos economic forum, citing a source familiar with the plan. A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that Trump is still expected to attend at this time.

In 2019, Trump had to cancel his plan to attend the annual gathering of global economic and world leaders due to a government shutdown. He attended the Davos forum in 2018.

" PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi and Ernst & Young CEO Mark Weinberger - were reportedly weighing stepping down from a separate outside policy advisory group before the president announced that he was disbanding the councils.

Several Trump loyalists are also among the invitees to the dinner, including Continental Resources CEO Harold Hamm, Red Apple Group CEO John Catsimatidis and LeFrak CEO Richard LeFrak. Hamm, a vocal defender of Trump who has advised him on energy policy, donated $25,000 in May to a legal defense fund created for the benefit of White House aides.

Another attendee, FedEx CEO Fred Smith, also has close ties to Trump, even though he has criticized Trump's trade policies. Smith was among the business executives who attended a "Pledge to America's Workers" event last month at the White House, where he received repeated shoutouts from Trump.

Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, who will also attend the dinner, has also courted Trump since he took office and regularly speaks with the president.

President Trump brought business titans from Pepsi to Fiat Chrysler and Boeing to his Bedminster golf club for a dinner on Tuesday.

Reveling in their attention, the president, bragged in front of reporters that the United States' GDP could top five percent in the next quarter. He predicted 'super growth' even after his chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, attempted to temper expectations.

'I think we're gonna be, very shortly in the fives. Again, numbers that people wouldn't have believed, I really think we can go much higher than in the fives, once we get trade deals that are rational and sane and good for our country,' Trump boasted. 'And not even good for our country, just fair for our country.'
The president allowed attending business leaders and his wife to take the floor one-by-one, praising the first lady midway through the event as 'caring' and 'loving' as he highlighted her approval rating.
'Well welcome to Bedminster. It's great to have to you have here,' she said after a round of applause. 'And we're looking for a good discussion tonight. And I just want to thank the president for doing an incredible job and for all of your help. Thank you very much.'
Her husband had made a joke moments earlier at the first lady's expense. Describing Pepsi's outgoing CEO, Indra Nooyi, he said she is routinely named one of the 'most powerful' women in the world.
No Melania, I'm not talking about you,' he jested.
Several minutes later he came back to his wife, though, offering her the ultimate compliment.
Referring to her as 'the great first lady' the president said, 'she has been so caring, so loving, so good to people, and you know I was in Ohio the other night, and there's so many signs, we love our first lady, we love our first lady.' He then invited her to stand.

The president also praised his daughter Ivanka's workforce initiatives with the senior White House staffer and her husband Jared Kushner present - neither of whom were invited to or volunteered to deliver remarks.
