Puana testified that he and his niece were once close and that he trusted her enough to invest money with her.
Jurors watched a deposition from Puana's mother, Florence Puana, now 99. Because of her failing health, she was unable to testify in person.
The Puanas say Katherine Kealoha came to them with an idea about taking out a reverse mortgage on her grandmother's home to help buy a condo her uncle wanted. Kealoha said she would consolidate her debts - which prosecutors described as massive - and promised her uncle and grandmother that she would pay off the loan.
She used the money to buy her uncle's condo, but instead of paying off the loan, she drained about $150,000 that was left over in about six months, FBI forensic accountant Laurice Otsuka testified. Kealoha used it on personal expenses, including a nail salon visit, a Maui resort bill and Elton John concert tickets, Otsuka said.
A statement from the Puana family said they find no joy or comfort in the verdict. "The years of humiliation, heartache, tears and sorrow inflicted on Florence, Gerard and our family won't be assuaged or erased," the statement said. "Some family relationships have been completely, perhaps forever severed, while others still remain tenuous."
Much of the testimony also focused on the alias Alison Lee Wong, which prosecutors say Kealoha invented to forge documents.
Kealoha stepped down from the prosecutor's office as the investigation intensified and her husband agreed to retire, receiving a $250,000 settlement package that he agreed to pay back if convicted of a felony.
Honolulu Police Commission Chairwoman Loretta Sheehan said he doesn't have to pay back the money until he's exhausted his appeals.
"The criminal justice system in our town worked today," Sheehan said, adding that she understands that the police department wants to move on from this scandal. "But I don't think we should ever put this behind us."
Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said in a statement the department is working hard to restore its reputation and the public's trust.
Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said after the verdict that "it's time to move on."
The wide-ranging investigation also has targeted Honolulu's elected prosecutor, who was Katherine Kealoha's boss, and the city's top civil attorney. Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro and Corporation Counsel Donna Leong went on paid leaves of absence after the FBI informed them they are targets of the investigation.

HONOLULU (AP) - A jury has found a former Honolulu prosecutor and her now-retired police chief husband guilty in a plot to frame a relative to silence him from revealing fraud that financed their lavish lifestyle, a case that shook the top levels of law enforcement.
The verdict came Thursday in what has been described as Hawaii's biggest corruption case.
Neither Katherine nor Louis Kealoha testified during the closely watched trial. Their defense attorneys argued the case was built on weak and circumstantial evidence.
Katherine Kealoha left the courthouse without commenting. Her husband said, "It's still a lot to take in." He thanked the community for "continued love and support."
The judge scheduled a bail hearing for Katherine Kealoha on Friday after a federal prosecutor asked that she be jailed.
"The Kealohas' extraordinary greed inspired astonishing corruption," said Robert Brewer, U.S. attorney for the southern district of California. Assistant U.S. attorneys from California prosecuted the case because federal prosecutors in Hawaii recused themselves. "These two were supposed to be the good guys. They were supposed to enforce the law - not break it."
In addition to conspiracy, the jury found both Kealohas guilty of three counts of attempting to obstruct an official proceeding and not guilty on one count of attempting to obstruct an official proceeding and one count of making false statement.
They were on trial over allegations they conspired with officers to frame her uncle for stealing their home mailbox.
Prosecutors say the Kealohas used officers from a secret police unit hand-picked by the chief to frame Gerard Puana for stealing their home mailbox to try to discredit him in a lawsuit he and his mother filed saying Katherine Kealoha stole money from them in a mortgage scheme.
Alexander Silvert, the federal public defender who represented Puana, said the verdict sends a strong message to law enforcement.
"If you use your power to frame an innocent man you will be held accountable," Silvert said.
The peculiar case of a mailbox reported stolen in 2013 from the Kealohas' home in an upscale Honolulu neighborhood led to a two-year federal investigation and corruption-related charges against a couple at the top levels of law enforcement.
Prosecutors said Katherine Kealoha bilked relatives, banks and children whose trusts she controlled and spent the stolen money on Maserati car payments, a firefighter lover and a hotel breakfast banquet when her husband became police chief.
A judge split a 2017 federal indictment into two trial trials. The mailbox conspiracy is the first trial, which began in May. A second trial will focus on bank fraud and identity theft charges. Katherine Kealoha also faces a third trial for a separate indictment alleging she and her pain physician brother dealt opioids.
The jury also found Lt. Derek Hahn and Officer Bobby Nguyen guilty of conspiracy.
Retired major Gordon Shiraishi was found not guilty.
Nguyen was married to Katherine Kealoha's niece and lived in the couple's pool house, while Hahn was Katherine Kealoha's partner in a solar business and Shiraishi was in the same recruit class as Louis Kealoha.
Puana testified that he and his niece were once close and that he trusted her enough to invest money with her.

HOME|CRIME|Former Honolulu, Hawaii, Police Chief and Wife Convicted in Corruption Trial
Former Honolulu, Hawaii, Police Chief Louis Kealoha and his wife, former deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha, have been found guilty on charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice, according to officials.
The jury delivered the verdict against the husband and wife, as well as two former police officers relating to "the Kealoha's attempt to frame Katherine's uncle, Gerald Puana, with theft of a mailbox amidst a family dispute over money," according to Courthouse News.
Puana's attorney, in a statement, said, "an innocent man was framed and went to jail for doing nothing more than trying to speak up. We're all very surprised the jury reached a verdict this quickly. This really sends a strong message to law enforcement."
The couple will face another trial for bank fraud, and Katherine Kealoha faces a third trial for "her alleged role in a drug distribution ring."

A Honolulu police captain with a doctorate in education was selected as the city's new police chief yesterday and is expected to guide the department through major financial cuts in a sour economy.
Capt. Louis M. Kealoha was the unanimous choice of the Honolulu Police Commission to lead one of the largest city departments, employing 2,100 police officers and 550 support staff.
";There's going to be big cuts,"; said Kealoha, i
Kealoha said the budget restraints and cuts will give the department an opportunity to re-examine its structure to see where there is duplication of effort and to see what services might be transferred to civilians or the private sector.
He said he also wants to increase the role of volunteer staffing, perhaps by increasing the police reserve officer program.
Kealoha replaces acting Chief Paul Putzulu, who has been in the job since late August after Boisse Correa retired. In May, the six-member commission decided not to renew Correa's contract, ending his 39-year career with HPD.
Kealoha, 49, is a 26-year veteran of HPD, most recently in the Juvenile Services Division.
PROFILE
;LOUIS M. Kealoha
» Age: 49
» Personal: Married to Katherine Kealoha, former city prosecutor, director of Office of Environmental Quality Control since 2008. Daughter, Kristina, 10.
» Education: 1978 graduate of Damien Memorial High School. Bachelor's degree in business administration and criminal justice administration, Wayland Baptist University. Master's degree in criminal justice administration, Chaminade University. Doctorate in education, University of Southern California.
» Experience: 26 years with HPD. Currently captain of the Juvenile Services Division. Has taught criminal justice at Chaminade University for 10 years.
Many of the rank and file rejoiced as the news spread.
";Everybody is saying morale just went up everywhere,"; said Sgt. Ryan Sato with the Juvenile Services Division. ";I wouldn't be surprised if there are parties all over the station.
";He's very well-respected, well-liked, always tells everybody hello, unlike other candidates,"; Sato said.
Police union leader Tenari Maafala said he was happy to see the selection.
Police Commission Chairwoman Christine Camp called Kealoha a ";collaborative leader"; who has the support of the community and the rank and file.
";I think that's going to be very important when hard decisions are going to have to be made,"; Camp said. ";It's going to be very important when you're doing more with less."; Camp said Kealoha has served on various boards helping at-risk youths and over the last decade has helped to educate police officers and prepare them for promotion on his own time.
";Just by his own effort, he's had people follow him and support him,"; she said.
Echoed Sato: ";He's the one that made me go back to college and get a four-year degree. It was his challenge that made me go back. That's what he pushes, education.";
While Kealoha's relatively junior rank gave pause to some on the commission, others noted that previous captains have made successful chiefs. They include Francis Keala and Doug Gibb.
The Police Commission unanimously picked Captain Louis Kealoha to be Honolulu's next police chief.

Top two stories in Hawaii today. Prosecutor testifying against the corrupt power couple shares the last name, Awong, of the guy found tied up and murdered in the mountains a couple weeks ago. I can't connect them with some quick Google searching. It's not a particularly common name but it's an old one. Seems odd.
After yesterday's news about the pedo cop getting no jail time, everything seems suspicious.

Hawaii Corruption Case Expanding
The unsealed Wittaker indictment is spreading. Looks like the 400+ sealed HI indictments are going to be major players.
So far, Honolulu's former police chief Louis Kealoha and his wife, Katherine Kealoha, who used to work as a city prosecutor, have been indicted for attempting to frame a family member with the help of several officers who were part of a special police force.
At least five officers have been charged with criminal activity - two of whom have already pleaded guilty - as federal investigators continue to peel away layers of alleged wrongdoing.
Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro, who has taken a paid leave of absence, is now a target of the U.S. Justice Department's ongoing criminal investigation, as is Mayor Kirk Caldwell's top civil lawyer, Donna Leong, who helped craft a $250,000 payout for Louis Kealoha.
Masunaga's case highlights just some of the latest allegations in what has become the largest public corruption scandal in Aloha State history.

Heres part of the story. I can't even comprehend the crooked play here. The day the guy gets called to testify against the arch criminal, he crashes his car into an electric company building. The case gets moved to the dept the crooked bitch controls. She brings in mainland traffic experts and dna testing from the car. For a petty misdemeanor dui. Hawaii has years of backlogged rape kits. What the fuck.
The building the guy crashed into was conveniently empty. What the fuck would a dna test even prove except that he was in the car, his own take home car? WHY WOULD YOU NEED THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW HE'S GONNA CLAIM HE WASN'T EVEN DRIVING THE CAR!?!?
Why does this sound like a fucking full blown false flag just to tell the guy 'no snitching'.
The second case being handed off to the Hawaii Attorney General's office is a DUI from November of 2016.
Honolulu Police Sergeant Albert Lee's subsidized vehicle crashed into an empty HECO building in Hawaii Kai.
That crash happened on the same day, Sergeant Lee was called to testify before the federal grand jury investigating Katheine Kealoha.
That case was also assigned to the career criminal division.
Lee's attorney Megan Kau says that was the first red flag. "These are deputies that handle defendants who have multiple felony convictions, are facing mandatory minimum life sentences or mandatory minimum sentences in Halawa. Albert Lee's case is not that, so it's very suspicious that this case got assigned to that division especially when Katherine Kealoha was the chief of that division."
The reason Sgt. Lee became a witness against Kealoha in the first place was because of an arrest of a Honolulu Businessman who also happens to be a convicted felon and friend of Kealoha's.
The businessman was wanted for a traffic warrant. An officer who worked under Sgt. Lee, Officer Jared Spiker, went to arrest the businessman and then got a phone call from him. Officer Spiker recorded the call and in the audio recording you hear the businessman say, "Listen, I going go to the top of the food chain. Trust me. Jared Spiker."
The top of the food chain may have referred to Kealoha, who then called Officer Jared Spiker and ordered him to leave the businessman alone.
Sergeant Al Lee defied that order and the man was arrested and subsequently pleaded 'no contest' to the traffic crime.
Months later, Sgt. Al Lee was charged with DUI, a petty misdemeanor.
Kau says it was obvious her client is a victim of retaliation.
The career criminal unit did DNA testing on Sgt. Lee's vehicle and sent it to the mainland. A traffic expert from the mainland was also flown in.
Kau says she has never seen such lengths for a DUI case, especially since at that time, there was a backlog of sex assault cases, hundreds of kits waiting for DNA testing.
"He was targeted and he was treated unfairly," Kau says.

HONOLULU (AP) - A federal grand jury indictment unsealed Tuesday accuses a former Honolulu city prosecutor of dealing opioids with her physician brother and using her position to cover up their crimes.
Katherine Kealoha, the wife of now-retired Honolulu police chief Louis Kealoha, steered law enforcement away from investigating her brother, Dr. Rudolph Puana, after police told her that he was buying cocaine, according to the indictment.
The siblings and unnamed co-conspirators were charged with distributing oxycodone, fentanyl and Xanax. Messages left for their lawyers were not immediately returned.
Puana was arrested amid a growing federal corruption investigation that has resulted in indictments against the Kealohas and current and former officers.
They are scheduled to go to trial next month after being accused of framing Katherine Kealoha's uncle for the theft of the couple's home mailbox to discredit him in a family financial dispute.
On Tuesday, Hawaii Attorney General Clare Connors asked the state Supreme Court to immediately suspend Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro because he is a target in the investigation.
Connors called the petition "unprecedented."
A court hearing is scheduled Thursday for a separate petition by a Honolulu businessman calling for Kaneshiro's impeachment.
Bill McCorriston, an attorney representing Kaneshiro, confirmed that Kaneshiro received a letter saying he is a target of the investigation, but he contends Connors' petition is speculative and based on media reports. McCorriston said there's no dysfunction in the prosecutor's office and Kaneshiro deserves a presumption of innocence.
Corporation Counsel Donna Leong, Honolulu's chief legal officer, took a leave of absence after receiving a target letter linked to the corruption investigation. Chasid Sapolu, Honolulu's second-highest-ranking prosecutor, announced a leave of absence after receiving a subject letter, which is less serious than a target letter.
The latest indictment said Puana, an anesthesiologist and pain doctor, advised one co-conspirator to use proceeds from the sale of illegal prescription pain medication to buy cocaine for the two of them. They would also "sell and barter" medication in exchange for cocaine, the indictment said.
When a police officer notified Kealoha that her brother and a co-conspirator were buying and using cocaine, she "arranged to have herself assigned as the prosecutor" of the investigation, the indictment said.
That allowed her to "steer law enforcement scrutiny away from her brother's felonious conduct in that drug conspiracy," the indictment said.
She then gave favorable plea deals to others involved "to reduce the likelihood they would reveal that her brother had distributed controlled substances," the document says.
Puana is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
He co-wrote a memoir with novelist Chris McKinney that tells his life story of growing up a red-headed Hawaiian, who despite struggling through school, went to Creighton University School of Medicine and worked at various hospitals before returning to Hawaii with a mission to help people.

HONOLULU (AP) - A federal grand jury has indicted a former Honolulu prosecutor and her brother on drug distribution charges.

Hawaii ex-police chief and wife jailed in theft conspiracy scheme
Katherine and Louis Kealoha, once seen as pillars of Hawaii's law enforcement community, will spend the next several years in federal prison.
On Monday morning, U.S. District Court Judge J. Michael Seabright sentenced Katherine Kealoha, a former deputy prosecutor for the City and County of Honolulu, to 13 years behind bars for trying to frame her uncle for stealing her mailbox in 2013.
Later that afternoon Seabright ordered her husband, Louis Kealoha, who took part in that scheme as Honolulu's police chief, to serve a seven-year prison term.
The couple, now estranged, will be forced to pay nearly $700,000 in restitution to their victims, which includes the estate of Katherine Kealoha's deceased grandmother, Florence Puana.
At least some of that money will come from Louis Kealoha's Honolulu Police Department pension, which pays him about $9,700 a month.
Seabright described the case as a "grotesque deprivation of civil rights" that harmed an entire community and caused lasting damage to the integrity of the HPD and the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
"The events underlying this case have had a real and measurable impact on our community," Seabright said. "The conduct of the defendants - all of the defendants - have truly shaken confidence in our governing institutions, most notably HPD."
The motive behind the frame job was simple - money.
Gerard Puana and his mother, Florence, had filed a lawsuit against Katherine Kealoha in March 2013, alleging that she had bilked them out of hundreds of thousands of dollars years before through a shady reverse mortgage deal and sham investment scheme.
That lawsuit began to uncover a series of financial crimes that the Kealohas had committed, not the least of which was Katherine stealing from her uncle and grandmother to fuel a lavish lifestyle.
The Kealohas used the stolen money for trips to Disneyland, Elton John concert tickets and Maserati car payments.
They also used the funds to pay for Louis Kealoha's inaugural celebration at the Sheraton Waikiki after he was named Honolulu's police chief. The bill for the soiree was nearly $25,000.
"They unabashedly used the power given to them to feed their greed," Seabright said.
A jury convicted the Kealohas and two Honolulu police officers, Derek Hahn and Minh-Hung "Bobby" Nguyen, in June 2019 for trying to execute the Puana frame job and cover-up.
The Kealohas were charged separately for their financial misdeeds, which included accusations that Katherine Kealoha had stolen nearly $160,000 from two children while she was their court-appointed guardian.
Katherine Kealoha was also charged with a series of crimes stemming from allegations she and her brother were running a prescription drug ring and that she used her position as a prosecutor to keep their criminal activity hidden from law enforcement.
Everyone Was Culpable
Monday's sentencing hearing, which included all three cases, was delayed numerous times due in large part to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
In a handwritten letter to Seabright, Kealoha pleaded for leniency, saying that her addiction to painkillers had clouded her judgment and that she was sorry for the pain she had caused.
The Kealohas and their co-defendants are the first to be prosecuted and sentenced as part of a years-long U.S. Justice Department investigation into public corruption and abuse of power in Hawaii government.
Several other high-profile officials, including Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro and former Corporation Counsel Donna Leong have been notified that they are targets of the ongoing criminal probe.
