UN Slams U.S. Abortion Laws as "Extremist Hate" and "Torture"

The United Nations' deputy high commissioner for human rights said on Wednesday that the numerous abortion bans being passed in the United States are a form of "extremist hate" that amount to "torture."

"We have not called it out in the same way we have other forms of extremist hate, but this is gender-based violence against women, no question," Kate Gilmore told The Guardian.

"It's clear it's torture - it's a deprivation of a right to health," she added.

Gilmore said experts have noted that banning abortion outright, as several U.S. states have come close to doing in recent months, violates humans rights. States like Georgia, Alabama, Missouri and Ohio have passed strict abortion restrictions that would bar abortions before many women even know they are pregnant.

"This is a crisis." Gilmore said. "It's a crisis directed at women."

Gilmore also accused well-funded anti-abortion groups of ignoring evidence to advance their political goals.

"It's an assault on truth, science and universal values and norms," she said. "You're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own facts."

This week, the largest organization of obstetricians and gynecologists in the U.S. also spoke out about the science used to restrict abortion rights, taking aim at early abortion bans proponents describe as "heartbeat bills." These bills ban abortions as early as six weeks, when an ultrasound can detect a fetal "heartbeat." But the term "heartbeat" isn't medically correct, because at such an early stage in the pregnancy, the embryo doesn't have a heart.

The U.N. deputy high commissioner for human rights, Kate Gilmore, said the increasingly stringent abortion laws and provisions in the U.S. are "deeply distressing" and equated them to torture. "We have not called it out in the same way we have other forms of extremist hate, but this is gender-based violence against women, no question," Gilmore, 61, told the Guardian. She also blasted U.S. interest groups behind the push for stricter laws, saying that the groups, which are largely conservative and religious, are well organized and ignoring science in favor of pushing an ideological point. "It's an assault on truth, science and universal values and norms," she said. "You're entitled to your own opinion, but you're not entitled to your own facts."

There is a growing slate of Republican-led states across the country passing strict abortion laws, with Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signing a bill that bans abortion in almost every situation. Louisiana and Georgia have also passed strict bills in recent weeks. There has been pushback from pro-abortion supporters, with Hollywood threatening to withdraw from filming in Georgia over the stringent rules.

Controversial new US abortion laws akin to 'torture' - UN Commissioner

Recently passed abortion legislation in several US states equates to violence against women, according to UN human rights commissioner Kate Gilmore, who also called out what she termed the "extremist hate" behind the measures.

"It's clear it's torture - it's a deprivation of a right to health," Gilmore claimed in hard-hitting comments to the Guardian newspaper on the topic of the recent changes.

The new restrictive changes on abortion law were made in at least nine states last month, including Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio, inciting an intense public debate over the issue. Large-scale protests took place throughout the US in opposition to the bans, drawing out thousands of participants in some cities.

In Georgia, the practice was banned after a fetal heartbeat could be heard around six weeks into pregnancy, while Alabama's ban can only be overruled if the woman's life is directly threatened by giving birth.

Gilmore argued that any absolute prohibition of abortion violates UN human rights expectations and constitutes "gender hate" and "violence against women, no question."

Gilmore participated in an event on reproductive rights at the end of May, where she railed against the predominantly conservative Christian organizations that funded and backed the initiatives, accusing them of leading an "assault on truth, science and universal values."
