Netflix chief marketing officer to leave
(Reuters) - Netflix Inc said on Thursday Chief Marketing Officer Kelly Bennett will step down after seven years in the role, during which the online video-streaming giant's paid subscribers jumped five-fold to 139 million.
Bennett, who joined in 2012 after spending nearly a decade with Warner Brothers, was responsible for launching Netflix's popular franchises such as "House of Cards"?, "Orange is the New Black"?, and "Narcos".
"The past seven years have been the most rewarding of my professional life, and we are at the top of our game, which is why this was the right moment for me to retire," Bennett said in a post.
His exit comes when Netflix is investing billions of dollars on original content to fend off intensifying competition in the streaming space.
Bennett is the latest high-profile exit in the past one year. Finance chief David Wells stepped down in August, while communication head Jonathan Friedland left last June over an 'insensitive' comment.
Bennett, 46, will stay on for a transitional period until a new CMO is named, the company said in its post.

Netflix CEO David Wells plans to step down after 14 years with the streaming giant, the company announced Monday - he'll exit after helping the company choose a successor.
Why it matters: Wells is the second C-suite executive to exit Netflix this summer. In May, Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Friedland exited after making insensitive remarks.
The exit seems amicable. Wells says he wants to work on philanthropy projects and that the company's finances are in a healthy place for him to move on. CEO Reed Hastings says, "I look forward to working with him during the transition as we identify a new CFO who will help us continue to pursue our ambitious goals."

Paramount Television President Amy Powell has been fired after making inappropriate comments, the movie and TV studio's Chief Executive Jim Gianopulos told staff Thursday.
In a memo obtained by The Times, Gianopulos told staff multiple people raised concerns about Powell's unspecified comments last week, sparking an internal investigation by the company. It was not immediately clear what Powell said that led to her ouster, but a person familiar with the matter said she made racially charged remarks in a meeting attended by multiple people.
"Having spent the past several days conducting a thorough investigation into this matter and speaking to those who were present, our Human Resources and Legal teams came to the same conclusion, and we have made the decision to terminate Amy's employment, effective immediately," Gianopulos said.
Powell has denied making the insensitive comments.
"There is no truth to the allegation that I made insensitive comments in a professional setting - or in any setting," she said in a statement. "The facts will come out and I will be vindicated."
The firing comes a month after Netflix ousted its chief communications officer for using a racial slur on at least two occasions in the workplace. Company CEO Reed Hastings said in a memo to employees he dismissed Jonathan Friedland after deciding that what he said wasn't "in line with our values as a company."
Powell was named president of the Viacom Inc.-owned Paramount Television in 2013, picked by then-CEO Brad Grey to ramp up the storied Los Angeles studio's efforts for the small screen.
Powell, who began her career at CNN, joined Paramount in 2004 after working in interactive marketing at Sony Pictures.
Under her tenure, the studio's TV division produced shows such as "13 Reasons Why" for Netflix, "School of Rock" for Viacom's Nickelodeon network, and "The Alienist" on TNT. Its upcoming shows include "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" on Amazon.
"While it is incredibly difficult to part ways with a valued member of our community, it is imperative that we uphold our values and ensure that all employees feel safe and included in the workplace," Gianopulos wrote to staff.
"Importantly, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the type of company and culture we're committed to building at Paramount," Gianopulos added. "It's one of inclusion, honesty and accountability - where diversity is critical to ensuring that all ideas, backgrounds and perspectives are embraced and respected."

"Chief Executive Reed Hastings sent an awkward email to Netflix employees saying he had fired the chief communications officer, Jonathan Friedland, for showing an "unacceptably low racial awareness and sensitivity" that is out of line with the company's values.
In the staff memo, Hastings described two instances in which Friedland dropped the "N-word," once several months ago in a PR meeting about sensitive words. Friedland apologized after several people told him how inappropriate and hurtful his use of the term was, Hastings said.
Friedland's ouster comes a week after Netflix Director of Original Programming Tara Duncan has left the Internet network after four years, as Deadline first reported. Her departure came within days of the exit of fellow Netflix TV development executive Layne Eskridge who went to Apple, a move that had been in the works for months.
Duncan and Eskridge were the only African American TV executives on the team.
The c-level executives at Netflix are all Caucasian, and major shareholders in the company such as the SEIU have raised concerns about the lack of racial and ethnic diversity on the streaming giant's board of directors.
