When movie mogul and son of a Mormon billionaire James Huntsman sued his former church for $5million over its alleged misuse of member donations, church authorities warned it could 'open the floodgates' for a series of copycat claims.
They weren't wrong.
Earlier this month, the fifth such 'copycat' lawsuit filed since October thundered down on the desk of church leaders in Salt Lake City earlier this month.
Gene and Michelle Judson, a Mormon couple from California who have both been members of the church for more than 50 years, effectively accused their once vaunted leaders of lying to them about how they spent $40,000 of their hard-earned cash.
It joined similar complaints filed in Utah, Illinois, Tennessee and Washington over the past six months, sparking the couple's attorneys to declare that the church now faced 'a reckoning in a multitude of jurisdictions'.
Certainly, with the church now on the hook for multi-million pound payouts to once loyal members accusing it of fraud, it does not appear an overstatement.
But legal experts have questioned the validity of their claims, with one suggesting they smacked of disaffected members desperate to get their money back.
Sam Brunson, a Mormon and tax law professor at Loyola University, said he was 'skeptical' that this was the church's judgment day.
Meanwhile, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly referred to as the Mormon church, has dismissed the complaints as 'baseless'.
The claims all assert that the church fraudulently misrepresented how it was spending member donations, known as tithes.
They allege that ecclesiastical leaders, including former President Gordon B. Hinckley, made statements from the pulpit that tithing was only used for specific religious purposes.
In fact, the church spent $1.4billion in tithing funds on City Creek Center, a luxury mall in downtown Salt Lake City, the lawsuits state.
The spate of filings was triggered when, in August, an appeal court overturned a decision to dismiss Huntsman's $5million claim against the church, originally filed in 2021.
Huntsman, the son of billionaire philanthropist Jon Huntsman, claimed the church was 'in dire straits' as followers were 'fleeing' the church amid allegations of fraud in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com in the wake of the decision.
His and the class-action suits that have followed all cite allegations by whistleblower David Nielsen, a former employee of the church's secretive investment arm Ensign Peak, who alleged the fund was spending member donations on City Creek.
They also lean on a decision by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in February last year to fine the church and Ensign Peak $5million for using shell companies to 'obscure' the size of its investment portfolio.
Their cases appear to hinge on a statement made in 2003 by then-President Hinckley, who Huntsman says used to fly on his family's private jet.
Hinckley insisted at the church's General Conference that tithes 'have not and will not be used' for City Creek, with the money coming instead from 'commercial entities owned by the church' and the 'earnings of invested reserve funds'.

As was the case with the Confucius Institutes, it is hard to know how foreign donations influence college presidents and their publicists. Some, such as Florida's Ben Sasse, have unequivocally denounced Hamas. Others have been less forceful, while some seem at best "evenhanded" in their assessments of mass murder. Among the most mealymouthed presidents include those of big-recipient schools such as Cornell,
Northwestern, and Harvard.
Pushback will need to come from donors. Several prominent donors, including former ambassador to China Jon Huntsman, have cut ties with the University of Pennsylvania over its Israel stance. Harvard, too, is hemorrhaging some big donors, such as Les Wexner, Idan Ofer, and Mark Rowan, while hedge-fund manager Bill Ackman says that he will not hire students engaged in pro-Hamas activities.
Ultimately, this controversy reflects the changing nature of the university. The campus reaction to Hamas's attack suggests that many universities no longer have the will or the desire to embrace the most basic human values. As they cash in their petrodollars, the people running academia may be giving their autocratic backers exactly what they want.

Nancy Pelosi Says She 'Can No Longer Remain Silent' On No Labels 2024 Plans
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday called out the No Labels group over its plan to put forward a third-party "unity ticket" in the 2024 presidential race, warning it could hurt President Joe Biden's reelection chance.
"I think that No Labels is perilous to our democracy," Pelosi told reporters at a breakfast hosted by Third Way, a center-left think tank, according to multiplenewsreports. "I say that without any hesitation."
She added that while the group claims to be bipartisan, the policies they keep on promoting are actually consistent with the GOP's messaging.
"I hesitate to say No Labels because they do have labels," she said, according to Politico. "They're called no taxes for the rich. No child tax credit for children. They're called let's undo the Affordable Care Act."
Former Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), a No Labels co-founder, took issue with Pelosi's words, telling NPRand ABC News in a statement that what's actually dangerous in a democracy is "when leaders try to tell Americans what they are allowed to think and when they try to prevent competition from participating in the political process."
Third Way has previously taken issue with No Labels, claiming that their "radical new plan" would help former President Donald Trump win the contest.
Pelosi echoed this concern, saying that while she had tuned out attacks from No Labels during her time as speaker, she feels like she has a responsibility to speak up this time around.
"When they jeopardize the reelection of Joe Biden as president of the United States, I can no longer remain silent on that," Pelosi said.
No Labels reportedly considered mounting a primary challenge to Pelosi in 2018.
In a memo dated Monday, No Labels described Biden and Trump, the front-runner in the Republican primary, as weak candidates, saying voters want an alternative.
"Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have profound vulnerabilities that likely will not get better with time. Their respective campaigns are a house of cards that could be tipped over by a compelling independent alternative in 2024," the memo reads.
The group also struck down the suggestion that they could help propel Trump to victory, saying that critics are "ignoring the simple fact that whoever ends up on a No Labels ticket would be the biggest determinant of where they would draw votes from."
No Labels has so far not announced who would lead their ticket. Several names previously floated around include Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman (R) and ex-Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R).
During the breakfast, Pelosi also weighed in on the election of Mike Johnson (R-La.) as the new House speaker.
According to CBS News, Pelosi said, "The Republicans wanted Trump as speaker, and they got him."

Sen. Joe Manchin is fueling speculation that he could join the 2024 presidential race by the end of the year after speaking at a New Hampshire town hall for the No Labels nonprofit on Monday.
The Democrat from West Virginia, known for conflicting with party leadership, likely would run a third-party campaign. Speaking to NBC News on Monday, Manchin did not dismiss the idea that he would challenge President Biden.
"We're not taking anything off the table," Manchin said when asked if he is considering running for president on a No Labels third-party ticket. He added that he will determine "next year" whether or not to run.
No Labels is a nonprofit working to put a "unity" ticket on the 2024 ballot, and hosted the town hall to promote its "common sense" policy platform.
Manchin addressed concerns that the No Labels idea was designed to play spoiler to a Biden re-election bid. "I've never been in any race I've ever spoiled," Manchin said during the event. "I've been in races to win. And if I get in a race, I'm going to win."
"We're here to make sure the American people have an option, and the option is can you move the American political parties off their respective sides. They've gone too far right and too far left," said the West Virginia Senator.
In a separate interview with CNN Monday night, Manchin hit his party's leader, saying Biden has "been pushed too far left," but "has the strength to fight back."
His criticism of former President Donald Trump was over Trump's response to the 2020 election loss. "One thing about the political process: when the race is over and the people have spoken, you move on," Manchin said.
Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, a Republican, also spoke at the town hall. "If we end up in 2024 with the same nominees that we did in 2020, is that the definition of insanity or what?" Huntsman, who also served as former Trump's ambassador to Russia - and former President Barack Obama's ambassador to China - remarked.

The following list consists of supposedly populares public figures and politicians who are largely characterized as "conservative", and/or "Trump supporters", and/or otherwise "patriots" (in some way, shape or form) who have immediately promoted one (or a combination) of the following pre-packaged narratives:
1. Moral high ground/Cuckservative: "Biden won, we should take the higher road and accept his victory." " It's not what we wanted, but I'm willing to work with the new administration"

Losers for Biden: Romney Campaign Alums Abandon GOP for Joe
Former staffers from Mitt Romney's failed presidential campaign are abandoning the Republican Party and working to elect former vice president Joe Biden.
Micah Spangler, who worked as a Florida field director for Romney in 2012, is working with the Biden campaign to "cultivate a network of Romney alums that want to help elect Joe in November," according to an email Spangler wrote to solicit support for his deviant scheme.
Spangler's former failed boss, who was the only GOP senator to vote to convict President Donald Trump, could be among those who end up backing Biden in the fall, or at least writing in "Alexander Hamilton." Romney was forced to endure a ritualistic humiliation after Trump's victory in 2016 when the president-elect invited him to dinner and pretended like he wanted to nominate him for secretary of state.
Spangler told the Washington Times that "dozens and dozens" of his former colleagues on Romney's failed 2012 campaign have "signed up" to be a part of the "network," whatever that means. A poor man's Lincoln Project? Or a desperate ploy to improve their social standing and advance their careers in politics?
The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump super PAC started by a group of failed Republican strategists, has been lavished with Twitter praise from anti-Trump liberals for its snarky attack ads. One of the group's founders, John Weaver, was an adviser to failed GOP candidates John McCain, Jon Huntsman, and John Kasich, and has also advised the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Not all former Romney staffers were eager to jump on the Biden bandwagon. Brett Doster, who also worked for Romney's campaign in Florida but didn't remember Spangler, told the Times he wished his former colleagues "no personal ill-will," but questioned "the patriotism and wisdom of supporting Joe Biden, who would be a cultural and economic disaster for the country."

Huntsman said what's needed is "transparency, a coordinated United States, voices in Congress, voices in the states, voices from the business community - because that's when China really starts to listen, when it affects their economy."
Huntsman served as ambassador to China from 2009 to 2011 after serving four years as governor of Utah. Huntsman also served as President Donald Trump's ambassador to Russia before stepping down in August 2019 to explore a 2020 gubernatorial run.

In its centuries-long history Russia has many times confronted various threats and managed to effectively cope with them, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news briefing on Thursday, adding this was a useful reminder to one and all, including US ambassador in Moscow Jon Huntsman, who earlier said US aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean allegedly demonstrated Russia "must cease its destabilizing activities around the world."
"I would like to address Mr. Ambassador with a reminder: Russia in its centuries-long history repeatedly confronted such threats disguised as recommendations, and each time it managed to prove they were utterly futile," Zakharova said. "Regrettably, the language of threats and sanctions became a calling card of the US Department of State lately. I believe that studying history well enough will be the best way out. This will make it possible to avoid making mistakes unforgivable for a diplomat."
Zakharova said the Russian army had successfully "cooled Napoleon's imperial ambitions" and encroachments by other Western neighbors, for instance Karl XII, of Sweden, whose campaign in the opinion of many historians had a disgraceful ending.
"I believe it is quite symbolic the US ambassador made such a statement at the end of April, because at the beginning of May we have a good tradition of celebrating the May 9 holiday - the day of victory in the Great Patriotic War. I would like to recall that the Soviet Union played the decisive role in the defeat of the aggressor - the Hitler-led coalition. It was a war of liberation and an anti-fascist war on the global scale," Zakharova said. "Possibly, Mr. Ambassador would like us to have some other occasion we may wish to celebrate. To tell you truth, we haven't had anything like that on our agenda yet."
Earlier, Huntsman said while observing The USS Abraham Lincoln kick off a combat training operation that "each of the carriers operating in the Mediterranean at this time represent 100,000 tonnes of international diplomacy."
"Diplomatic communication and dialogue coupled with the strong defense these ships provide demonstrate to Russia that if it truly seeks better relations with the United States, it must cease its destabilizing activities around the world," Huntsman added.

Chiefs Of Three Russian Intelligence Agencies Travel To Washington
WASHINGTON – The directors of Russia's three main intelligence and espionage agencies all traveled to the U.S. capital in recent days, in what observers said was a highly unusual occurrence coming at a time of heightened U.S.-Russian tensions.
Russia's ambassador to the United States had earlier confirmed that Sergei Naryshkin, the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), was in Washington in recent days to meet with U.S. officials about terrorism and other matters.
But the presence of the two other chiefs – Aleksandr Bortnikov, director of the Federal Security Service (FSB), and Colonel General Igor Korobov, chief of Russian General Staff's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) – was not previously known.
The Washington Post said on January 31 that Bortnikov and Korobov came to the U.S. capital last week, and that Bortnikov had met with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, as did Naryshkin.
It wasn't clear whom Korobov may have met with.
The visits came also just days before President Donald Trump's administration announced new actions against Russia, in compliance with a law passed overwhelmingly by Congress last summer. But the measures taken late on January 29 by the State and Treasury departments were met with disbelief by many observers, who expected asset freezes, travel bans, and other sanctions to be imposed, none of which happened.
In a radio interview in Moscow on January 30, U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman said Pompeo had indeed met with Russian spy officials, but he did not say where the meeting occurred or say specifically who attended.
"Just in the last week, he has had probably the most important meetings on counterterrorism that we've had in a very, very long time, at the senior levels," Huntsman told Ekho Moskvy radi?.
A spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment.
A CIA spokesperson declined to give details of Pompeo's meetings.
"While we do not discuss the schedules of U.S. intelligence leaders, rest assured that any interaction with foreign intelligence agencies would have been conducted in accordance with U.S. law and in consultation with appropriate departments and agencies," the official said in an e-mail to RFE/RL, on condition of anonymity.
Pompeo said in a January 29 interview with the BBC that U.S. and Russian spy agencies had cooperated, but he told the BBC that Russia was still considered an adversary. "I haven't seen a significant decrease in their activity," he said.
CIA directors regularly meet and hold talks with their Russian counterparts on a variety of issues. But veteran and retired U.S. intelligence officers say the presence of all three Russian officials in Washington at the same time, and at a time of intense scrutiny over Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, is highly unusual.
"I can't recall any time in the last 15 years" that all three Russian agency chiefs were in the U.S. capital at the same time, Steven Hall, a former CIA station chief in Moscow, tells RFE/RL. "It's highly unusual."
During his tenure, Hall says, it was always a big deal, politically and logistically, whenever a senior Russian intelligence officer got in to see a U.S. counterpart, giving Moscow a way to assert they were on equal footing with the United States.
The Russians "consider it a big political win if they can do it. There is certainly a political perspective," Hall says. "So it's particularly strange under these circumstances that we would want to give them something like that."
"Given the political conditions in the United States now, it's flabbergasting to be honest. I can't imagine who would have signed off on that," he adds.

But deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov said Saturday that discussing the issue would be premature because Whelan hasn't been formally charged, according to Russian news agencies.
"As to the possibility of exchanges of one sort of another, it's impossible and incorrect to consider the question now, when an official charge hasn't even been presented," he was quoted as saying by the state news agency RIA-Novosti.
"Charges will be presented in the near future," he said, according to the Interfax agency.
Some Russian news reports earlier had cited unnamed sources as saying Whelan had been indicted on charges that could bring 20 years in prison if convicted.
Officials haven't given details of Whelan's suspected activities and he was initially identified only as an American. His other citizenships became known on Friday.
U.S. Ambassador Jon Huntsman Jr. visited Whelan on Wednesday in Moscow's Lefortovo Prison, a 130-year-old facility noted for its strict conditions. Britain, Canada and Ireland have applied for consular access to him.
The 48-year-old Whelan, a former U.S. Marine who left the military with a bad-conduct discharge, is global security director for a U.S. automobile parts manufacturer.
His family back home says his presence in Moscow was nothing more than a visit to attend a wedding. In a Washington Post op-ed published Friday, his twin brother, David, urged the U.S. government to pressure Russia to release him.
"Paul is a kind and considerate brother, son and uncle, and a generous and loyal friend," he wrote. "He travels as often as he can, both for work and pleasure. He is many things to many people, but he is not a spy."
Paul Whelan established an account on VKontakte, a social media service similar to Facebook that is popular among Russians, which showed he had scores of contacts in Russia. Many attended universities affiliated with the military, civil aviation or technical studies. Many share his interest in sports and firearms.

Several top officials in President Trump's administration are denying they wrote an opinion piece that was published in the New York Times on Wednesday. Why did NBC reportedly pay Chelsea Clinton $600,000 a year?
NBC's hiring of Chelsea Clinton as a "special correspondent" in its news division was widely recognized as an exercise in corporate cynicism when it was announced in November 2011.
Now a price tag has been hung on that scandal, with Politico's reporting that Clinton has been paid a salary of $600,000. The network hasn't confirmed the figure, but it hasn't denied it either, and responded to Politico's questions by asserting that it "continues to enjoy a wonderful working relationship with Chelsea, and we are proud of her work."
It's that last part that's particularly head-scratching, for as a news correspondent for NBC, Clinton hasn't done anything to be proud of. Quite the contrary. The disclosure raises the obvious question of NBC's goal in giving a person without any measurable journalistic or broadcasting experience or any particular public following a high-profile job and apparently paying her a top-echelon salary.
The answer is equally obvious. Plainly, it was done to curry favor with the Clinton family.
This was not NBC's first effort to kiss up to a powerful family, or the last. In 2009, the network hired George W. Bush's daughter Jenna as a correspondent for the "Today" show. Subsequently Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Abby Huntsman, daughter of one-time GOP presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman, had gigs as political commentators on MSNBC.
Clinton's hiring was announced with an extra helping of PR malarkey, however. To hear the words of then-NBC News President Steve Capus, Clinton represented the second coming of Nellie Bly. "Given her vast experiences, it's as though Chelsea has been preparing for this opportunity her entire life," he said.
Clinton's hiring only underscored the stunting of network news. Talented and experienced journalists have been laid off by the cartload. Precious airtime, especially on the morning shows, has been turned over to celebrity reporting and in-house promotions thinly disguised as news. Original reporting is turned over to freelancers (no benefits necessary, don't you know) or to local affiliates. What's happened to the money saved? It's gone to fatten the bottom line and to finance stunt hiring like Clinton's.
And how has that worked out? If journalism is defined as publishing information that the subjects of your reporting don't wish to be made public, then it's hard to find any journalism in Clinton's oeuvre whatsoever. Every piece we reviewed appeared to be painstakingly engineered to give no offense to anyone. Even the most rabid anti-Clinton conservatives looking for an objectionable or contrary moment of reporting in Chelsea Clinton's portfolio would come up empty-handed.
Clinton's debut piece about a child welfare nonprofit in Arkansas run by an energetic woman named Annette Dove raised issues about the role of society and government in consigning these children to the wayside, but those were buried deeply beneath its syrupy focus on the personal struggles of Dove's clients and herself. It sounded like an advertisement for George H.W. Bush's "thousand points of light" dodge – who needs government social policy when people like Annette Dove are willing to bankrupt themselves to fill in the gaps?
That initial appearance ended inauspiciously, devolving into a companionable chat between Clinton and "Rock Center" host Brian Williams about her difficult upbringing. Williams: "Tell us how you got from your life as it was, say, yesterday, to a life here with us and doing this." (One would think her life had followed the downward trajectory of the heroine of "Orange Is the New Black.")
Matters went downhill from there. Clinton did a couple more uplifting pieces about people "making a difference," then suddenly, like water finding its own level, she was down to fawning celebrity profiles.

President Trump is approaching his first bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin with "eyes wide open," according to a top U.S. diplomat.
"President Trump is pursuing this meeting … to determine if Russia is willing to make progress in America's bilateral relationship," U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman told reporters during a briefing Thursday.
"[Trump] believes a better relationship with Russia would be better for America and Russia, but the ball is in Russia's court," Huntsman said. He said Trump and his staff are "entering with our eyes wide open, but peace is always worth the effort."
The July 16 meeting between Trump and Putin in Helsinki, Finland, will follow the same format as the president's summit last month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He and Putin will meet one-on-one for a brief period before proceeding to oversee an expanded bilateral discussion and working lunch with aides. They are expected to discuss U.S.-Russia relations, Syria, Ukraine's sovereignty, and Moscow's malicious cyberoffensive against the U.S. and several other countries.

It looks like a delegation of Republican senators may be spending Independence Day in Moscow.
The group will arrive in St. Petersburg on June 30 before heading to Moscow on July 3 and 4 to meet with lawmakers, Russia's Interfax news agency reported, citing a source in the Russian parliament. On Thursday, two Republican senators, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) and Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) told CNN they would be traveling to Russia "next week" at the invitation of Jon Huntsman, U.S. Ambassador to Russia. They didn't give their exact departure date.
Huntsman's counterpart, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov, told the state-run media agency TASS that a group of senators would be in Russia in late June and early July, the "Moscow Times" reported.
Shelby said they would be there for "high level" meetings, but declined to say with whom. "We think it's good for us to talk," he said.
But Kennedy is ready to go right to the top. "I hope we're going to get to meet with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin," he told CNN. "I want to be able to meet with government officials, try to establish some rapport, talk about common interest, talk about common problems."
When asked, Kennedy said he intended to address Russian interference in the American election system. "I don't want to do anything to start an international incident but I believe in talking frankly about these things," he said.
National Security Adviser John Bolton will be in Moscow next week to discuss a potential meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report this month saying that Russia interfered in the 2016 election - adding to the long-held consensus by the U.S. intelligence agencies - Trump has repeatedly pressed to have a friendly relationship with Russia, including a summit with Putin.
Now it looks like it's in the works. CNN reports that two diplomatic sources say a summit between is tentatively scheduled between Trump and Putin for mid-July in a neutral location such as Vienna.
This week, a Republican senator said Russian trolls are actively working to increase divisions in the U.S., inserting themselves into social-media debates on immigration. "Trolls and bots are still active on Twitter trying to deceive us," tweeted Sen. Jim Lankford (R-OK). "They're even using the current family separation & immigration debate to sow discord among Americans. It is important for social media companies to expose it so everyone knows what is fake."

White House backs away from Haley's pledge of new sanctions against Russia
The Trump administration said Monday that it was "considering additional sanctions on Russia," a day after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley stated emphatically that such penalties were imminent.
Haley told CBS' "Face the Nation" that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would announce the new sanctions "on Monday if he hasn't [done so] already." The Treasury Department declined to comment Sunday night, but two officials told the Associated Press that no such announcement by Mnuchin had been planned.
In a statement, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tried to clarify the situation, but her explanation created more confusion and led to suggestions that President Donald Trump had personally intervened to halt the sanctions from taking effect Monday.

"We are considering additional sanctions on Russia and a decision will be made in the near future," Sanders said in a statement.
In her CBS interview, Haley said the sanctions would target "any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to [Syrian leader Bashar] Assad and chemical weapons use." The officials noted to AP that two entities were hit with such penalties last month in a largely overlooked portion of a sanctions package that dealt mainly with Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and hacking.
After Haley's comments, some in the administration suggested the sanctions now being considered could be rolled out Monday. But others said it would be wiser and more effective to wait for a period longer than three days after the U.S., British and French infuriated Russia with their missile strikes on Syria on Friday.
The officials could not say when the new sanctions would be announced.

Bush addressed sailors aboard a Navy ship in May 2003 alongside a "Mission Accomplished" banner, just weeks before it became apparent that Iraqis had organized an insurgency that would tie down U.S. forces for years.
Later Sunday, Trump sent a letter to congressional leaders informing them in writing of his decision to order the strike. Under the War Powers Resolution, the president must keep Congress informed of such actions.
The nighttime assault on Syria was carefully limited to minimize civilian casualties and avoid direct conflict with Russia, but confusion arose over the extent to which Washington warned Moscow it was coming. The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning. The U.S. ambassador in Moscow, Jon Huntsman, said in a video, "Before we took action, the United States communicated with" Russia to "reduce the danger of any Russian or civilian casualties."
