Conservatives name Candice Bergen as interim leader after O'Toole voted out
Last Updated Wednesday, February 2, 2022 11:34PM EST
The Conservative Party of Canada has named Candice Bergen as interim leader following a private vote late Wednesday evening. Bergen, who had the role of deputy party leader, finished tops among nine candidates in a private preferential ballot.
Bergen has represented the Manitoba riding of Portage-Lisgar since 2008. She is replacing Erin O'Toole, who was ousted earlier Wednesday when 73 MPs voted to replace him. "I want to express my gratitude and respect to [O'Toole] for his leadership and the sacrifices he's made for our party and caucus," Bergen tweeted earlier Wednesday. "Thanks also to Rebecca and the O'Toole family for their dedication and support. Erin is an asset and will continue to be a valued member of our team."
Bergen has previously held the role of Minister of State for Social Development in Stephen Harper's government and served as Opposition House leader under Rona Ambrose. Lori Turnbull, director of Dalhousie University's School of Public Administration, said Bergen brings experience and name recognition to the Conservative party leadership, which can be "a blessing and a curse." "A lot of people who know her for better or worse would associate her with Harper, with Erin O'Toole, with Andrew Scheer," she told CTV News Channel. "If you're deciding whether the party's going to go in a new direction or keep continuity, she's definitely the continuity candidate." Turnbull added that Bergen's first order of business would be to try to unite the party, which could be a challenge.
"She knows the party really well, she has the trust of people, but whether or not she's going to be able to bring together factions of the party that actually fundamentally disagree on really important questions, I don't know that she's going to have the time or the space to do that," she said. Ron Liepert, a Conservative MP from Alberta, said it will be difficult for Bergen to unify the party. "It's going to be a bloody tough job," he told The Canadian Press. Meanwhile, other MPs embrace the change as a chance for a fresh start.
"Erin was a long time coming," said Edmonton MP Matt Jeneroux. "You can't run in the leadership on one thing and then do something else." Bergen faced stiff competition for the role, as eight other MPs threw their names in the hat for a chance at leading the party, though not all the candidates stated their intentions publicly. Among those interested in the position were Marilyn Gladu, a Conservative MP for Sarnia-Lambton. "I'll put my name forward and see what the caucus has to say about that and then we'll see where we go from there," she told CTV News Channel's Power Play earlier on Wednesday.
"I think this is an opportunity for a fresh start to unify the party. We definitely need to see that kind of unity and I think the grassroots needs to weigh in on the policy positions that we took in the last election, so we can be successful, expand the base and win the next election." John Williamson, MP for New Brunswick Southwest, announced in a tweet that he too was among those interested in leading the party. "I know how to keep us united around the things that matter most to us as Conservatives," he said in a statement posted online. "We must demonstrate to our supporters and future voters we're fighting for them - every day - with a consistent plan."
Rob Moore, MP for the Fundy Royal riding of New Brunswick, had also thrown his name into the ring. Moore is currently the shadow cabinet minister for Justice. "Now, more than anytime since prime minister [Stephen] Harper left office, our party needs sensible, experienced, and above all else, principled, Conservative leadership," he said in a statement.
HIGH-PROFILE NAMES NOT INTERESTED IN LEADERSHIP
When it comes to who might be interested in leading the party long-term,there are also several high-profile Conservatives who've stated they don't intend run. In a statement to CTV News, former interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose said she isn't interested. "It's really hard to see what's happening and not jump back in to help," she said. "My heart says yes but my head says no. I'm not going to go back at this juncture in my life. Our kids are at the age where they need us and I am enjoying being in business." Earlier this week, both Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said they are not interested in federal leadership and are instead focused on their respective provinces. "My hands are full," Ford told reporters on Tuesday. "I love being premier of this province. That's my job." "I'm just 24/7 working on getting us out of this pandemic."

Erin O'Toole is out as the leader of the Conservative party.
Tory MPs voted 73-45 to remove O'Toole during a secret ballot Wednesday morning. Only a 50% vote was needed to oust him as leader.
O'Toole issued a warning Monday night saying removing him as leader would mean a dangerous shift to the right and threw out the names of Derek Sloand and Randy Hillier.
""The other road is to better reflect the Canada of 2022. To recognize that conservatism is organic, not static, and that a winning message is one of inclusion, optimism, ideas and hope," said O'Toole.
"It's time for a reckoning. To settle this in caucus. Right here. Right now. Once and for all. Anger vs. Optimism. That's the choice in simple terms. I will accept the result of this vote. The signers of this letter must accept it, too. They brought it. They'll have to live with it."
Reports came in that during Wednesday's meeting O'Toole apologized and said he was willing to alter course on some of his policies.
The vote throws the party into another leadership race, the second in 18 months.
It only took minutes for MPs to throw their hats into the ring to become interim leader.
"I am running to be interim Leader of our Conservative Party. I will respect my caucus colleagues. I will listen to our movement. I know how to keep us united around the things that matter most to us as Conservatives," said New Brunswick MP John Williamson.
A vote on who will be the interim leader will be held later Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney pleaded with federal Conservatives to be careful what they do in "the heat of the moment.
"It doesn't make sense to keep changing leaders after every election," said Kenney who supported O'Toole when he was seeking the party leadership.
A disastrous 2021 election campaign was the beginning of the end for O'Toole.
He flip-flopped on the carbon tax - after initially opposing it, to bring in his own.
He waffled on other issues like firearms rights and balanced budgets.

The Techniques of Communism: INVADING EDUCATION
IN UNDERMINING a nation such as the United States, the infiltration of the educational process is of prime importance. The Communists have accordingly made the invasion of schools and colleges one of the major considerations in their psychological warfare designed to control the American mind. By such "cultural" work, the Soviet fifth column obtains an influence, directly or indirectly, over at least a portion of American youth. Some of the young men entering our armed forces, and some of the young women who must support them, are brought within the orbit of pro-Communist thinking, to the detriment of our national security. Future community leaders are also affected. Many by-products beneficial to the conspiracy arise from this infiltration, since concealed Communists in education or their friends become sponsors of Communist fronts, aid in financing Communist causes, and sometimes play a part in influencing the attitudes of certain scientists, specific church circles, and government agencies.
As early as 1924, in lectures delivered at the Sverdlov University in Moscow, Stalin specified "cultural and educational organizations" as valuable allies in the Communist battle for world dictatorship. These Stalin lectures are now the famous Foundations of Leninism, published and studied widely by the Communists. It was in 1933, however, that extensive infiltration began in the schools and colleges of this country-encouraged by American recognition of Soviet Russia, and stimulated by the Open Letter to the Party. The Trojan horse policy of the People's Front, which had been initiated at the Seventh World Congress of the Communist International in 1935, gave added impetus to this activity. By May, 1937, the conspiracy considered that enough progress had been made in the schools and colleges to justify a special article of directives in that month's issue of The Communist, then the official theoretical organ of the Party. This article, "The Schools and the People's Front," laid it down as a necessity that "Marxist-Leninist analysis must be injected into every class." In order that this might be accomplished successfully, "the Party must take careful steps to see that all teacher comrades are given thorough education in the teachings of Marxism-Leninism." It was stressed that "Communist teachers are faced with a tremendous social responsibility." They must affect the children's thinking, and they must mobilize other teachers. But all of this was to be done from the work in the classroom to the agitation among other teachers-"without exposing themselves." (Italics mine).
This is the instruction which runs through all directives to the infiltrators of our schools and colleges: they must exercise their Communist influence "without exposing themselves." In this very article of May, 1937, an added precaution is given "Only when teachers have really mastered Marxism-Leninism will they be able to inject it into their teaching at the least risk of exposure."
The article by John Williamson in the November, 1950, issue of Political Affairs, dealing with general infiltration but referring specifically to trade union work, makes much of the same necessity. The Red infiltrators are there counseled to perform their task in such a way as not to be "exposed" and dislodged from their positions.
This method must be thoroughly understood. If it is not constantly kept in mind, the Red techniques of entering education and influencing its course will be completely missed. Those who contend that Communists should be permitted to teach in our schools "as long as they do not teach Communism openly in the classroom" have not acquainted themselves with the ABC of Red infiltration. And yet, the late Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio, who represented a considerable section of conservative opinion, has made this grave error.

Conservatives elect Candice Bergen as new interim leader after O'Toole ousted
https://tnc.news/2022/02/02/conservatives-elect-candice-bergen-as-new-interim-leader-after-otoole-ousted/
The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) caucus has picked Candice Bergen to be their interim leader after voting to oust Erin O'Toole on Wednesday.
Caucus met this evening to hash out who would steer the party until an official leadership race determines O'Toole's successor. The interim party leader is barred from running for the post.
Some others who cast their name for the interim leadership included John Barlow, John Williamson, Rob Moore, Tom Kmiec, John Brassard, Kerry-Lynne Findlay and Marilyn Gladu.
Bergen has represented the riding of Portage-Lisgar since 2011. Prior to becoming interim leader, the Manitoban was deputy leader of the party under O'Toole. Bergen has also served as Canada's minister of state for social development and parliamentary secretary to the minister of public safety in the Harper government.
Recently, Bergen has been a vocal supporter of the Truckers for Freedom convoy. Continue…

MPs finally speak out against New Brunswick allowing grocery stores to require vaccine passports
https://tnc.news/2021/12/14/mps-finally-speak-out-against-new-brunswick-allowing-grocery-stores-to-require-vaccine-passports/
Three New Brunswick Conservative Members of Parliament are at last speaking out against the New Brunswick government allowing grocery stores the option of barring entry to unvaccinated Canadians.
John Williamson, Rob Moore and Richard Bragdon have all released statements surrounding the New Brunswick government's 'winter action plan,' which came into effect on Dec. 4. The plan authorized grocery stores and other retailers to require vaccine passports for entry.
The three MPs' remarks came less than a week after True North reached out to Conservative leader Erin O'Toole's office and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office for comment. At the time, only People's Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier responded to condemn the measure. Continue…

Hajdu stonewalls disclosure of Winnipeg lab files citing "national security" concerns
https://tnc.news/2021/06/15/hajdu-stonewalls-disclosure-of-winnipeg-lab-files-citing-national-security-concerns/
Liberal Health Minister Patty Hajdu once again refused to hand over documents related to the firing of two scientists from a federal infectious disease lab in Winnipeg.
According to Blacklock's Reporter, during a Canada-China Relations Committee meeting, Hajdu repeatedly refused to disclose information about the incident claiming that releasing the documents could harm Canada's national security.
Opposition committee members repeatedly pressed the Liberal government to disclose information related to federal scientists Keding Chang and Xiangguo Qiu.
"You don't want to be forthcoming about the government's errors, the national security breach and possibly how you put our nation's security at risk," Conservative MP John Williamson said on Monday.
"I would suggest your insistence on having documents presented in a way that would not protect security is exactly that, putting Canada's national security at risk. I would ask if you have the appropriate security clearance to be able to look at documents," responded Hajdu.
"You guys had no idea who you were letting in that lab. That is why we're seeing the stonewalling," Williamson continued.
The pair, who were employed at the National Microbiology Laboratory at Winnipeg, were accused of sharing Ebola and Henipah virus samples with China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. On January 20, they were fired from the lab and reports have since claimed that the RCMP are unable to locate the couple.
Hajdu also indicated that there was "no connection" between the two scientists' departure from the lab and their decision to share the samples with China.
Earlier this month, internal emails obtained by Blacklock's Reporter also revealed that Keding and Xiangguo's colleagues had sounded the alarm about the virus transfer and collaborations with China.
In one email, former scientific director Dr. Matthew Gimlour said he had "concerns" about close ties between researchers and China.
"They are requesting material from us due to collaboration with Dr. Qiu," one staff email read.
"Historically it's also been easier to obtain material from us as opposed to U.S. labs."

Trudeau government awarded Chinese firms $6 million in contracts in 2020
https://tnc.news/2021/04/28/trudeau-government-awarded-chinese-firms-6-million-in-contracts-in-2020/
Chinese firms received government contracts valued at $6 million last year according to information obtained by Blacklock's Reporter.
In data tabled in the House of Commons, the government reveals the value of contracts awarded to Chinese firms stood at $5.8 million, with another $2.3 million going to direct foreign aid to China.
"The Liberal government's business-as-usual approach to the People's Republic of China should come to an end particularly with Canadians held hostage," said Conservative MP John Williamson, who requested the data be tabled.
"Canadians should be aware of contracts from the Government of Canada handed to companies with links to mainland China."
Canada-China relations have sharply declined since Canadian police arrested Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant in 2019. China countered by arresting two Canadian citizens and banning certain Canadian products.
In the past year, China has also begun escalating tensions with Canadian allies like Australia and Taiwan.
"Beijing is proving it is a belligerent power toward other nations. It is wrong that our government won't take stronger steps by working in concert with our allies, especially Australia, to defend our values and citizens," added Williamson.
The Trudeau government has been criticized in the past for giving aid to China, a country with an economy worth over $13 trillion and has a military budget of $267 billion. In 2019, Canada gave China $41 million in aid.
