Remember: Disney CEO Bob Iger Suddenly Steps Down…February 25th, 2020.

The news comes after the announcement that Harvey Weinstein, who worked closely with Iger for years as the co-chairman of Miramax, a subsidiary of Disney, was found guilty of sexual assault Monday. After filing a sexual misconduct lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein, Paz de la Huerta added several prominent members of Disney's board of executives to the suit, according to Vanity Fair.

The lawsuit states that Iger helped Weinstein, former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, and Pixar head John Lasseter create a culture that fostered workplace sexual harassment.

Huerta is suing Iger for violation of federal sex trafficking statutes for his involvement with Weinstein. The Guardian reports that Lasseter had a reputation for inappropriate behavior among the company's younger women, including at least one of his junior employees. His time at Disney ended in June 2018 when he admitted to misconduct that had been brought to life during the #MeToo Movement.

Weinstein was convicted of rape and sexual assault on the February 24 after a long list of prominent Hollywood figures testified that he had raped or assaulted them over the last several decades. He is in custody awaiting his sentencing, scheduled for March 11th.

While everyone was in quarantine, at least twenty-one CEOs have stepped down, including Bob Iger, the longtime CEO of Disney. In the wake of Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking investigation and the arrest of his partner Ghislaine Maxwell, people on the internet are speculating if they're connected.

Epstein had a number of wealthy connections, including CEOs and political figures. His home in Palm Beach was also near properties associated with these CEOs, including Walt Disney World. While there's no apparent connection between the happiest place on earth and Epstein, could there be one between him and Bob Iger?

The benefits of having a fuck-off fund
The idea that it's sometimes necessary to quit your job on ethical grounds is well-established in contemporary culture. In 2015, Greg Smith walked away from an executive-director-level role at Goldman Sachs. "To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money," he wrote in a New York Times op-ed announcing his resignation. In 2018, Gizmodo reported that roughly a dozen Google employees were leaving the company over objections to its artificial-intelligence contract with the Pentagon. And earlier this year, actress Emma Thompson resigned from the Skydance Media's forthcoming film Luck after the studio hired John Lasseter, a Pixar co-founder who had been accused of decades of sexual misconduct.

But the ability to quit your job on principle is, in itself, a privilege. In a country like the US, where 78% of workers live paycheck to paycheck, most people can't afford to walk away from gainful employment, no matter what their ethical compunctions. That's where the appeal of building up a fuck-off fund comes in.




Building up a pile of savings, as Paulette Perhach explains in the viral essay that first coined the term, means that you can afford to walk away from any number of bad situations-a toxic relationship, a nightmare roommate, an abusive boss.

This week, a wave of resignations from a new digital-media outlet called The Markup served as a reminder of yet another reason that fuck-off funds come in handy. Not only do they give you the means to stand up for yourself financially, they enable you to stand up for your principles, too.

At least five of The Markup's seven staff writers resigned from the company in protest of the surprise ouster of its co-founder and editor-in-chief, Julia Angwin. While there are conflicting versions of the circumstances surrounding Angwin's departure, it was immediately clear that much of the site's editorial staff was unwilling to work at The Markup without her.

At issue was the workers' loyalty to Angwin herself as well as concerns that her departure revealed a troubling glimpse into The Markup's future direction and ideals. Data journalist Surya Mattu tweeted of his decision to quit, "I am so proud of the work we all have done and heartbroken that I wont see it to completion. But @JuliaAngwin is the reason I call myself a data journalist and I cant get myself to work for the organization that doesn't see her value." Other reporters similarly expressed their faith in Angwin; "@JuliaAngwin is the reason I joined, and her ouster is the reason I am leaving," said Lauren Kirchner.




Another journalist who recently took a stand by leaving a job is Maya Kosoff, who in January quit as a writer for the reboot of the website Gawker after working there for just 20 days. Kosoff and a colleague, Anna Breslaw, waived a severance package that came with a non-disparagement agreement so they could speak publicly about their reasons for quitting. Those reasons centered on offensive comments allegedly made by their boss-"about everything from poor people to black writers to her acquaintance's penis size," as Maxwell Tani writes in The Daily Beast-and human resources' failure to address their concerns.

Kosoff says she didn't have much of a fuck-off fund when she quit-but she certainly wishes she had. "Obviously I had financial concerns about leaving," she says. "I had a little bit of savings, but it wasn't going to sustain me for very long."

Even so, her ethical concerns won out. And she realized that in the long run, staying at a job where she had deep concerns about management practices could hurt her career-and her financial stability-even more than leaving would. "The longer I stayed there, the less I could justify working there, and the harder it might be to get a job down the line if the work I was doing there wasn't work I wasn't particularly proud of," she says.

Kosoff acknowledges that there are plenty of people who wouldn't be able to make a similar choice. "I wouldn't blame anybody for not doing it," she says. "I recognize the immense privilege that it takes to walk away."

Warner Bros. Chief Executive Kevin Tsujihara will step down after allegations that he had an affair with a young actress and tried to help her get cast in the Burbank studio's movies, WarnerMedia said Monday.

AT&T-owned WarnerMedia, which is Warner Bros.' parent company, began investigating the matter following a March 6 Hollywood Reporter article that included text messages between Tsujihara, 54, and aspiring British actress Charlotte Kirk. She was eventually cast in the 2018 caper film "Ocean's 8" and the 2016 rom-com "How to Be Single."

"It is in the best interest of WarnerMedia, Warner Bros., our employees and our partners for Kevin to step down as chairman and CEO of Warner Bros.," said WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey in a statement. "Kevin has contributed greatly to the studio's success over the past 25 years and for that we thank him. Kevin acknowledges that his mistakes are inconsistent with the company's leadership expectations and could impact the company's ability to execute going forward."

The scandal blew up at an awkward time for WarnerMedia and Stankey, who had just days before given Tsujihara an expanded role overseeing animation at the company, including Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. AT&T had also recently beaten a final court challenge to the deal from the U.S. Justice Department. AT&T took over the company formerly known as Time Warner Inc. last year.

Tsujihara is the latest media figure to come under scrutiny in the #MeToo era. Stories about inappropriate sexual activity by executives have led to high-level media and entertainment figures losing their jobs, including former CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves, former Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter and former "Today" show co-host Matt Lauer.

Tsujihara's exit comes just days after he offered an apology to staff and promised to cooperate fully with WarnerMedia's investigation.

"I deeply regret that I have made mistakes in my personal life that have caused pain and embarrassment to the people I love the most," Tsujihara said in an emailed memo to staff.

WarnerMedia had previously engaged an outside law firm to look into the situation, but at the time did not find anything inappropriate about the woman's casting, the company said when the texts surfaced.

The texts appeared to provide a rare glimpse into Hollywood's infamous "casting couch" culture, in which sex is exchanged for a shot at fame or access to power.

"I don't usually call about casting about these types of roles," Tsujihara wrote to Kirk in response to an inquiry about a television show, according to the Hollywood Reporter story. "It's fine, I just need to be careful."

After the revelations, Tsujihara's attorney, Bert H. Deixler, said Tsujihara "had no direct role in the hiring of this actress."

Kirk was introduced to Tsujihara by Australian casino billionaire and financier James Packer, with whom Kirk had a fling, in 2013. At the time Kirk and Tsujihara met, Packer and director-producer Brett Ratner were in the process of setting up a $450-million film co-financing pact with the studio.

Later, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Kirk texted Ratner and suggested she was "used as icing on the cake" for the deal between Warner Bros. and Ratner's company. In an exchange with Packer, she wrote: "I didn't expect to be part of a business deal so all I'm asking is u just help me with a couple of roles it's not big deal and then we'll just put this all behind us."

Through a spokesman, Kirk denied having anything to do with the slate financing deal between Warner Bros. and Packer and Ratner's company, RatPac-Dune Entertainment. Kirk also denied that Tsujihara had done anything wrong, or promised her anything. She said she had no claims against Tsujihara, Ratner or Packer.

John Lasseter Leaving Disney, Pixar Amid Misconduct Allegations

John Lasseter, the Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Animation, is leaving his role at the end of the year in wake of misconduct allegations.
"John had a remarkable tenure at Pixar and Disney Animation, reinventing the animation business, taking breathtaking risks, and telling original, high quality stories that will last forever," said Disney Chairman and CEO Robert Iger in a statement Friday.

Deadline reported on multiple allegations against Lasseter in November:
At the animator's insistence, Disney flew the women to a New York event. One Pixar employee became the designated escort as Lasseter took the young women out drinking one night, and to a party the following evening.
"He was inappropriate with the fairies," said the former Pixar executive, referring to physical contact that included long hugs. "We had to have someone make sure he wasn't alone with them."
Another incident involved Lasseter pulling a "female executive tightly to him and move his hands over her body." Witnesses claim the woman was "pissed" and said "being groped by John Lasseter" was not in her job description.

John Lasseter, once the most powerful man in animation, will leave the Walt Disney Co. at the end of the year following a sexual harassment scandal, the company announced on Friday.

Report: Disney CEO Bob Iger Aware of John Lasseter's Alleged Sexual Misconduct Since 2010

Buried under 18 paragraphs of the Hollywood Reporter's rehashing of fall of John Lasseter, the Pixar chief currently on a six-month leave of absence over multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, is the bombshell news that Disney CEO Bob Iger has been aware of Lasseter's alleged behavior going back to 2010.

Lasseter's leave ends soon and the speculation is that based on the prior allegations and some new ones, he will be fired.

While not terribly surprising, this news is notable, but nowhere near as notable as Iger reportedly being aware of Lasseter's reported misbehavior for a full seven years before decisive action was taken.

If true, how many more alleged victims piled up during those years Iger apparently looked the other way?

The far-left Iger, who is both a major Democrat contributor and hoping to position himself for a presidential run in 2020 or 2024, has some other questions to answer about other #MeToo scandals currently rocking the Mouse House.

First off, a lawsuit filed by an unidentified Canadian woman who claims to have been assaulted by Harvey Weinstein in 2000, has been allowed to proceed against Disney, the parent company of Weinstein's Miramax at the time. Iger was Disney's COO in 2000.

Countless people have credibly admitted that Weinstein's alleged predations were an "open secret" at the time.

Iger's third problem is disgraced political reporter Mark Halperin, who has been credibly accused by numerous women of all kinds of disgusting behavior while he was at ABC News. At the time, Iger was president of the network.

As is the case with Weinstein, numerous people have come forward to claim that Halperin's behavior was an "open secret."
