After Earning 'State-Affiliated Media' Label On Twitter, NPR Leaves For Chinese State-Affiliated TikTok

After being correctly labeled as "US state-affiliated media" by Twitter, National Public Radio (NPR) announced on Wednesday its plans to forgo using the social media platform to post its slanted, left-wing "news" coverage. Instead, the company will promote its content on other social media sites such as TikTok, a popular app that effectively operates as Chinese Communist Party (CCP) spyware.

"NPR will no longer post fresh content to its 52 official Twitter feeds, becoming the first major news organization to go silent on the social media platform," the outlet announced in a Wednesday morning article, citing Twitter's inclusion of a "US state-affiliated media" tag in the organization's account bio as the reason for the decision. By then, Twitter had updated NPR's tag to read "Government-funded Media" following a total meltdown by Twitter's left-wing, blue-check brigade.

In typical, melodramatic fashion, NPR CEO John Lansing claimed he has "lost ... faith in the decision-making at Twitter," and that he needs to take "some time to understand whether Twitter can be trusted again."

"It would be a disservice to the serious work you all do here to continue to share it on a platform that is associating the federal charter for public media with an abandoning of editorial independence or standards," Lansing wrote in an email sent to NPR staff.

Not long after NPR announced its departure from Twitter, the government-funded outlet posted a series of tweets linking to resources its readers can use to find NPR content. One of these tweets contains a list of NPR's other social media accounts, including a link to NPR's official TikTok account.

Owned by the Beijing-based company ByteDance, TikTok has rightly come under fire in recent months for its connections to the Chinese Communist Party. Included in TikTok's privacy policy is a provision stipulating that the platform "may collect biometric identifiers and biometric information ... such as faceprints and voiceprints," from users' content. In China, companies such as ByteDance are required by law to give the CCP access to any data it requests.

While Twitter certainly has its problems - such as continued shadowbanning of conservative figures and censoring of factual reporting - its decision to label NPR as "state-affiliated media" or "government-funded media" isn't inaccurate. In fact, NPR even admits as much in the article announcing its departure from Twitter.

In Wednesday morning's diatribe, NPR claimed Twitter's labeling of the outlet as "government-funded media" is "inaccurate and misleading." Yet, in the very next sentence, NPR concedes that "it receives less than 1 percent of its $300 million annual budget from the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting."

If the government funding provided to NPR is as small and insignificant as the outlet claims, then why accept it at all? Moreover, if the outlet is so concerned about being accurately labeled as "government-funded media," then wouldn't the easiest solution be to reject what supposedly small amount of funding it receives from federal bureaucrats?

In light of NPR's histrionics, it's worth highlighting the fact that the so-called "news" outlet has operated as a Democrat Party mouthpiece for years. After the New York Post released its infamous Hunter Biden laptop story in October 2020, for instance, NPR outright refused to cover the bombshell revelations, claiming it didn't "want to waste [its] time on stories that are not really stories." The outlet also referred to the story as a "pure distraction."

State-funded NPR has announced it will boycott the platform after a label highlighted its government link

US state-affiliated media outlet NPR has decided to abandon its Twitter account in protest after the social media platform attached a label pointing out its reliance on government funding.

The broadcaster's chief executive John Lansing insisted thatboycotting Twitter will "protect NPR's credibilityand its ability to produce journalism without a shadow of negativity," the outlet reported on Wednesday. "The downside… doesn't change that fact. I would never have our content go anywhere that would risk our credibility," he insisted. The row began last week, whenTwitter labeled NPR as "US state-affiliated media." The broadcaster pushed back, arguing that labeling it in the same way as state-affiliated media organizations from such countries as Russia and China was "unacceptable." Twitter revised the disclaimer to "government-funded media." Nevertheless, Elon Musk defended the original decision, saying NPR fit the definition of state-affiliated media.

NPR derives nearly 10% of its revenue from federal, state and local governments, according to US watchdog group InfluenceWatch. Much of that money is paid indirectly, through grants to local radio stations that license content from NPR. "Federal funding is essential to public radio's service to the American public, and its continuation is critical for both stations and program producers, including NPR," the outlet says on its own website.

As Fox News host Tucker Carlson points out, NPR downplays its government funding to the public while at the same time sending lobbyists to Washington every year to demand more taxpayer dollars. "NPR is the radio station of permanent Washington," Carlson said last week. "That's who pays for it, that's who benefits from it."

NPR has been accused of promoting establishment talking points and helping to manipulate the 2020 presidential election. Just weeks before voters went to the polls, the outlet joined with other legacy media organizations ignoring the New York Post's bombshell report on alleged influence-peddling by then-candidate Joe Biden's family.

A week later, NPR Managing Editor Terence Samuel defended the decision, saying, "We don't want to waste our time on stories thatare not really stories, and we don't want to waste the listeners' and readers' time on stories that are pure distractions." (The Hunter Laptop from Hell)

Samuel was later promoted to executive editor. The messages on which the Post's scoop were based, derived from a laptop abandoned by Biden's son, were later confirmed as authentic by such outlets as the New York Times and Washington Post.

In recent weeks, NPR has published reports promoting gun ownership by transgender people and arguing that male athletes don't have a physical advantage over their female counterparts. The broadcaster later issued a correction, acknowledging that scientific research shows that testosterone levels affect athletic performance.

"Accounts belonging to state-affiliated media entities, their editors-in-chief, and/or their prominent staff may be labeled."

"State-financed media organizations with editorial independence, like the BBC in the UK for example, are not defined as state-affiliated media for the purposes of this policy," the platform adds.

NPR disagreed with the categorization. CEO John Lansing issued a statement saying the company was "disturbed" by the label and that it "does not apply" to the platform. "NPR and our Member stations are supported by millions of listeners who depend on us for the independent, fact-based journalism we provide," the statement reads.

"NPR stands for freedom of speech & holding the powerful accountable. A vigorous, vibrant free press is essential to the health of our democracy," Lansing added.

NPR's website states that "Federal funding is essential to public radio's service to the American public and its continuation is critical for both stations and program producers, including NPR" [emphasis original].

The network receives annual grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), a publicly funded non-profit created by the government.

National Public Radio (NPR) will eliminate four of its podcasts as part of a broader series of layoffs that will impact 10% of its existing staff.

Among those slashed will be "Everyone & Their Mom," "Louder Than a Riot," "Rough Translation," and "Invisibilia," The Hill reported. The company reportedly has a budget deficit of more than $30 million and outlet head John Lansing has insisted that the elimination of the podcasts are a vital necessity to keep the station afloat.

NPR first announced the job cuts in February, joining other legacy media outlets such as CNN and the Washington Post, which have both made major staffing cuts in recent months.

"Unlike the financial challenges we faced during the worst of the pandemic, we project increasing costs and no sign of a quick revenue rebound," Lansing said at the time. "We must make adjustments to what we control, and that is our spending. We have reached a point where we can no longer protect all jobs."

The layoffs will affect roughly 100 individuals, most of whom will retain their positions through April 28, per The Hill. NPR does hope that "Louder Than a Riot" will remain until June.

"When we say we are eliminating filled positions, we are talking about our colleagues - people whose skills, spirit and talents help make NPR what it is today," Lansing wrote in a memo to staff today. "This will be a major loss."

On an annual budget of roughly $300 million, Lansing says, revenues are likely to fall short by close to $30 million, although that gap could reach $32 million.

"We're not seeing signs of a recovery in the advertising market," Lansing says in an interview. "Nothing is nailed down yet except the principles and what we know we have to reach."

NPR's programming division, which produces its industry-leading podcasts, has more than doubled since 2019. Lansing says he remains committed to podcasting "1,000 percent," as well as the network's hallmark news magazines, such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered.

Lansing says he does not yet know who within NPR will be affected, but said the job cuts would not fall evenly across the organization.

"I don't anticipate that it would be like a haircut across every division, because that's just not management," Lansing says. "Management is about committing to strategy, making tough decisions."

He also vowed to make sure job cuts do not fall disproportionately on employees of color.

An NPR spokeswoman said final decisions on which jobs will be eliminated should occur by the week of March 20.

When asked about his priorities, Lansing invoked what he has called the network's "North Star'' since his arrival in the fall of 2019: a push to ensure the network has a bigger and broader audience base, rooted in younger and more diverse listeners, readers and consumers. The emphasis, he says, must be on drawing in "the future audience to make NPR sustainable for the next 50 years."

National Public Radio (NPR) is cutting the pay of executives across the board to help offset the financial impact of the pandemic on the company. CEO John Lansing sent an email to the staff last week explaining that NPR was preparing to take a $12-$15 million hit in the amount it had expected to receive from sponsors this fiscal year. Close to one-third of NPR's revenue comes from corporate sponsors, including State Farm, Trader Joe's, and General Motors. These sponsors are largely in lieu of traditional advertisements, which the company does not run.

"We do not have any position eliminations on the table now ... and it is out goal to avoid them as much as is reasonably possible," said Lansing in the email. His own salary will be cut by 25%. The company is hoping to save $25 million through pay cuts and closely monitored discretionary spending. NPR spokeswomen Isabel Lara said the company's "main priority is to preserve jobs."

More than 33,000 news professionals have been furloughed, lost their jobs, or had their pay reduced since the beginning of the economic lockdown brought about by the pandemic. Since the beginning of the national lockdown, news consumption has increased. Readership numbers on NPR's website have doubled in recent weeks, radio streaming has increased by close to a third, and podcast downloads have gone up, as well.

The Office of Cuba Broadcasting's Radio and Television Marti, sister broadcasters to Voice of America and other US Agency for Global Media outlets like Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, Radio Free Asia and Radio Farda, ran a three-part report on Soros last May that USAGM Director John Lansing characterized in a Wednesday statement as
"blatantly anti-Semitic."

The reports were broadcast in Spanish with the intent of being distributed across Cuban media, the Washington Post notes.

Lansing said a months-long investigation into the broadcast and the events that led up to its airing concluded the video was "deeply offensive and wholly inconsistent with our professional standards and ethics. OCB should have never aired it."

"A comprehensive human resources investigation of the incident is now complete. One employee and three contractors have been terminated to date, and the agency has initiated the standard disciplinary process for four additional OCB employees," Lansing continued. Four others were terminated immediately after the program was brought to the public light by The Cuban Triangle, a blog about Cuban issues run by an independent investigator, just days after Soros received a bomb threat last October.

"On its face, these reports were anti-Semitic and unjournalistic and violated our high standards of editorial content," Lansing told the Post. "We found the eight people who we felt were the most responsible."

Lansing told the paper the incident was "purely a matter of a rogue journalist who was being supervised poorly that allowed that terrible piece of content to be published," and that "there was no connection to anyone in the Trump administration, period."

Four additional staffers at Radio and TV Martí have been fired over a controversial report broadcast last year that referred to Jewish philanthropist George Soros as "anti-Semitic" - bringing to eight the number of dismissals at the station so far following a months-long internal investigation by the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (OCB), which oversees the Martí stations, as well as the Martínoticias digital site.

The report, aired by Isabel Cuervo for the Antena Live program, raises conspiracy theories about Soros, who is identified as a "left-wing billionaire of Hungarian-Jewish origin" and a "nonpracticing Jew of flexible morals." The broadcast, which aired in three separate segments, included an interview that was posted on YouTube by RT.com that Cuervo used with no attribution to the source and another one passed off as her own interview with an alleged expert.

Cuervo and former News Editor Wilfredo Cancio were dismissed immediately after then Senator Jeff Flake and Senator Bob Menéndez demanded an investigation. The Martí report, broadcast last May, made headlines at the end of October when a blog on Cuban issues raised questions about the broadcast just days after Soros received a bomb threat.

John Lansing, director of the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees Radio and TV Martí, issued a statement Wednesday saying that the three-part report should have never aired.

U.S. Agency for Global Media CEO John Lansing, who had been appointed in 2015 during the Obama administration, had ignored early warnings of taxpayer-funded USAGM media entities such as the Voice of America (VOA) targeting Americans in violation of the Smith-Mundt Act.
Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), has issued a report on the investigation of some of the Smith-Mundt Act violations at USAGM under John Lansing's watch.
USAGM CEO John Lansing, who has been in his position since 2015, had received warnings in private emails as well as through BBG Watch articles posted online where he could read them.
Similar warnings were sent to both Democratic and Republican members of the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) which had an oversight role and has now an advisory role after the agency changed its name earlier this year to U.S. Agency for Global Media.
Voice of America Director Amanda Bennett who was hired by Lansing also did not respond to similar early warnings sent to her e-mail address about questionable advertising and other abuses of journalistic standards by VOA.

During the 2016 presidential election campaign, some VOA reporters and many VOA reports included one-sided attacks on Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in VOA coverage as well as in their personal Facebook and other social media posts.
