Kennedy, U.S. Ambassador to United Nations, and 1960 vice presidential candidate for Richard Nixon against the Kennedy-Johnson ticket. Another grandson, John Davis Lodge (b. 1903 in Washington, D.C.),[3] was the 64th Governor of Connecticut. The son of Henry Cabot Lodge II, George Cabot Lodge II (b. 1927), was the 1962 U.S. Senate candidate from Massachusetts against Ted Kennedy.

For the first time, hundreds of photos, lantern slides and glass plate negatives are available to the public

A trove of historic images from early 20th-century Australian and British expeditions to Antarctica is officially available to the public, the National Archives of Australia (NAA) announced this week.

Once held by the Australian Antarctic Division, the collection-hundreds of photos, lantern slides and glass plate negatives-has been transferred to the NAA. Staff members at the archives then digitized the images, creating detailed record listings for each one. Now, anyone can view them online.

"This collection is rare and fragile," says Steven Fox, the NAA's assistant director-general, in the archives' statement. "Acquiring, conserving, digitizing and preserving it means it will be accessible now and for future generations."

John King Davis-a skilled navigator who is sometimes called the "greatest captain in Antarctic history," according to the Australian Antarctic Program-took the majority of the photographs during expeditions to the White Continent in the early 1900s.

Renowned Australian photographer Frank Hurley also snapped many of the shots that provide a "unique glimpse of the difficult conditions the explorers faced," says Simon Froude, the NAA's director-general, in the statement.

The striking black-and-white images show the hardy, cold-resistant creatures that the explorers encountered on their missions to Antarctica, including a colony of royal penguins on Macquarie Island, a remote island located between Australia and the Antarctic continent.

Some images offer an intimate look at what life was like for the men who ventured below the Antarctic Circle. In one, an unidentified man with frost covering his mustache and eyebrows stands in a hole dug in the ice. Another depicts English artist George Marston lying under a blanket and reading a book by candlelight.

Photographers also captured the dramatic Antarctic environment. In one image, an unidentified man stands next to three towering icebergs. In another, the British Terra Nova ship is surrounded by pack ice.

Although scholars had long hypothesized about the existence of a far southern continent, Antarctic exploration began in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Between 1768 and 1775, James Cook, a captain in the British Royal Navy, led an expedition that twice circumnavigated Antarctica, but never got close enough to see the continent, per the nonprofit American Polar Society. Then, between 1819 and 1820, Russian explorers became likely the first humans to lay eyes on Antarctica. American sealer John Davis is believed to have been the first person to set foot on the continent in 1821.

Starting in 1901, British and Norwegian explorers began the race to reach the South Pole. Despite the best efforts of British adventurers like Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton and Edward Wilson, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen became the first to reach the geographic South Pole on December 14, 1911.

To this day, the continent continues to lure travelers from all over the world. According to the nonprofit International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, more than 23,000 travelers visited Antarctica during the 2021-22 season.

NFL puppy show QB Brett Favre received $1.1 Million in welfare funds for speeches he never gave.

A nonprofit group involved in an alleged embezzlement scheme for misusing money allegedly paid NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favre $1.1 million to speak at events. The problem, according to Mississippi's state auditor, is that Favre never showed up for the events in question.

State Auditor Shad White announced $94 million worth of questionable spending from the Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS) recently. The funds reportedly were used for many events that did not assist those in need, despite what the nonprofit claimed. That includes payment for sports activities.

The Mississippi Community Education Center sent the payments to Favre, who resides in the state. According to the audit, the former quarterback was paid $500,000 in December 2017 and $600,000 in June 2018.

The money was meant in exchange for Favre to make an appearances and speechs at multiple events, but the report says, "upon a cursory review of those dates, auditors were able to determine that the individual contracted did not speak nor was he present for those events."

Favre does not face any criminal charges for his alleged connection, according to the AP.

White described this as one of biggest public corruption cases the state has seen in decades.

"If there was a way to misspend money, it seems DHS leadership or their grantees thought of it and tried it," White said, adding the audit "shows the most egregious misspending my staff have seen in their careers.",

John Davis, Mississippi's director of the Department of Human Services from January 2016 until July 2019, has been indicted along with director of the Mississippi Community Education Center, Nancy New.

The report states that that Department of Human Services leaders "participated in a widespread and pervasive conspiracy to circumvent internal controls, state law, and federal regulations" to move the money to particular places, including to family members of the leaders in question.

This audit comes just a few months after their former Human Services director and five others were indicted on charges of embezzling around $4 million. Those involved have pleaded not guilty.

What happened:

The former director of Mississippi's Department of Human Services, John Davis, was arrested for embezzling millions of dollars from welfare funds. Some of the funds went to a former WWE wrestler who was allegedly being paid to give classes on drug abuse. In reality, the money was paying for the wrestler's own posh drug rehab.

He never taught a class. According to the auditor's office, Davis and another DHS employee made fake invoices to pay Brett DiBiase - a former pro wrestler who later became a DHS employee - with money intended to help poor families. DiBiase is the son of well-known former pro wrestler Ted DiBiase.

Embezzled funds were also funneled to other co-conspirators through their businesses, using fake documents and forged signatures.

What this means:

The stolen money came from a federal grant for state welfare programs, so this doesn't just affect Mississipians.

It's unclear right now exactly how much money was stolen. But over $30 million tax dollars were granted to the Mississippi Community Education Center, which is owned and operated by a mother-son team who have been arrested and charged in the fraud. Just makes you wonder how many of these types of schemes go under the radar.

When the government has so much of your money to give away, it's bound to happen.

A former Department of Human Services director and five others have been accused of embezzling millions of dollars meant for low-income families in Mississippi. The case is deemed one of the largest embezzlement cases in the state's history.

This week, state officials announced an ex-state director, a former pro-wrestler and four colleagues were arrested after they had allegedly stolen more than $4 million of taxpayer money for personal expenses.

The following is a verbatim release from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor:

JACKSON, Miss. - Special agents from the office of State Auditor Shad White have arrested John Davis, the former Director of the Mississippi Department of Human Services (DHS); former DHS employee Latimer Smith; Dr. Nancy New, owner and Director of the Mississippi Community Education Center (MCEC) and New Learning, Inc.; Zach New, Assistant Executive Director of MCEC; Anne McGrew, accountant for MCEC; and Brett DiBiase in connection with a multimillion-dollar embezzlement scheme. The indictments include a range of violations involving fraud and embezzlement. Auditors concluded, after an eight-month investigation, that the accused conspired to illegally obtain millions in public funds from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program administered by DHS. Defendants used a variety of business entities and schemes to defraud the taxpayers. "The funds that were illegally obtained in this case were intended to help the poorest among us. The funds were instead taken by a group of influential people for their own benefit, and the scheme is massive. It ends today," said Auditor White.

Davis and Smith stand accused of fraudulently manufacturing documents to enrich Brett DiBiase using TANF money. Davis and Smith created invoices to pay DiBiase TANF funds for teaching classes about drug abuse, but DiBiase was in a luxury rehabilitation facility for his own drug use in California at the time and did not perform the services. Davis and Smith created documents and arranged payment knowing DiBiase was not performing the work he was hired to perform. Nancy New and her son, Zach New, stand accused of using the News' non-profit, MCEC, to pay for DiBiase's drug treatment using TANF funds. At Davis' direction, MCEC used TANF money received from DHS to pay for DiBiase's opioid treatment at the Rise in Malibu facility. The documentation submitted by the News claimed this was to pay DiBiase for conducting training classes that never, in fact, took place. The News also stand accused of transferring millions in TANF funds to their private businesses. They then converted funds to their personal use and concealed the conversion through various fund transfers, fraudulent documents, at least one forged signature, and deceptive accounting measures. Finally, Davis and the News are accused of creating a fraud scheme to take TANF funds to pay for personal investments in medical device companies (Prevacus, Inc., and PreSolMD, LLC) in Florida.

"I don't care how politically connected a person may be. You do not have the right to treat taxpayer money as your own or to lie to the taxpayers about what you're doing with that money. Others doing this kind of thing are on notice: this will not be tolerated now," said White. All accused were indicted by a grand jury assembled by Jody Owens, District Attorney of Hinds County. District Attorney Owens and assistant district attorneys will prosecute the case.

"The Hinds County District Attorney's Office looks forward to working with the State Auditor Shad White and his dedicated team to end public corruption in Mississippi," said Owens. "The misuse of government funds designed for families in need will not be tolerated by our office and those who break the law will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible." "We have worked tirelessly in the Auditor's office to uncover this sprawling conspiracy, so I want to thank the investigators, auditors, and analysts who all assisted," added White.

The total amount of money lost to these schemes has not yet been determined, but the loss already exceeds any embezzlement scheme in the records of the Auditor's office. Records are kept for all cases from the last twenty years. Because of the large amount of money involved, and until the full extent of the loss to the taxpayers is determined, this is considered an ongoing investigation by the Auditor's office. There will be no additional comments at this time. If convicted on all counts, the accused face hundreds of years in prison. Persons arrested by the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

According to the indictment, between September 2014 and October 2019, the defendants operated an international procurement network of front companies that existed to acquire U.S.-origin goods for the Advanced Engineering Research Organization (AERO) and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), and to cause those goods to be exported from the United States to the entities without export licenses in violation of federals law. Both AERO and PAEC were on the Commerce Department's Entity List, which imposes export license requirements for organizations whose activities are found to be contrary to U.S. national security or foreign policy interests. PAEC was added to the Entity List in 1998. AERO was added to the Entity List in 2014, after the U.S. Government found that it had used intermediaries and front companies to procure items for use in Pakistan's cruise missile and strategic UAV programs.

According to the indictment, the defendants attempted to conceal the true destinations in Pakistan of the U.S.-origin goods by using the conspirators' network of front companies as the supposed purchasers and end users of the goods and as the apparent source of payments for the goods, even though the goods were ultimately received in Pakistan and paid for by AERO or PAEC. The defendants caused the U.S. companies to file export documents that falsely identified the Ultimate Consignees of the shipments as entities other than AERO and PAEC. The defendants never applied for or obtained an export license from the Department of Commerce authorizing the export of goods to AERO or PAEC in Pakistan.

The indictment identified 38 separate exports from the U.S. that the defendants caused, involving 29 different companies from around the country. Three of those companies are in New Hampshire. None of the U.S. companies is alleged to have been complicit in the illegal exports. Each defendant is charged with two felony counts of conspiracy. Although arrest warrants are pending, none of the five defendants has thus far been apprehended.

This matter was investigated by the Department of Commerce's Office of Export Enforcement; the Department of Defense, Office of Inspector General, Defense Criminal Investigative Service; and Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Davis and Trial Attorney Nicholas Hunter of DOJ's Counterintelligence and Export Control Section, National Security Division.

The charges and allegations contained in an indictment are merely accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Marine from Ferndale killed in Afghanistan

FERNDALE - A U.S. Marine from Ferndale was among six Marines killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Saturday, Jan. 21.
Capt. Daniel B. Bartle died Thursday, Jan. 19, in a crash in the Helmand province. He was 27.
Bartle, who graduated as a valedictorian from Ferndale High School in 2002, had been decorated with two Air Medals and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, among other awards. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan.
"Men of humility and honor are rare in this world," his family said in a prepared statement. "Daniel lived these values every single day and inspired others to do the same. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend, and though his death saddens us greatly, we are finding consolation in all the love, laughter and joy that he gave to those who were fortunate enough to know him."
Plans were pending Saturday evening for Bartle's memorial service and the return of his remains from overseas.
Bartle was born in Salinas, Calif. He lived in Missoula, Mont., before moving to Ferndale as a high school freshman. He graduated high school with a 4.0 GPA.
Nick Carlson, a Ferndale High School teacher who taught Bartle when he was a senior, remembered him as a humble student who, despite his good grades, never talked about his own accomplishments.
Bartle told The Bellingham Herald in 2002 that after he finished college at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., he planned to see the world.
John Davis, Bartle's brother-in-law who spoke on behalf of the family, said Bartle grew into a well-rounded man: He was fluent in Spanish, loved to lift weights and majored in electrical engineering. But his talents never went to his head.
"He just quietly went about his way," Davis said. "He was an exceptional kid, just a really special person."
Bartle always had a desire to serve others, and that led him to serve in the military, Davis said.
"The helicopter program looked challenging," he said, "and he was always up for a challenge."
Bartle was commissioned into the Marine Corps in May 2006. He reported for duty with the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363 in July 2011. He had been promoted to captain the year before.
Also killed in Thursday's crash were fellow HMH-363 Marines Capt. Nathan R. McHone, 29, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; Master Sgt. Travis W. Riddick, 40, of Centerville, Iowa;

Cpl. Jesse W. Stites, 23, of North Beach, Md.;

Cpl. Kevin J. Reinhard, 25, of Colonia, N.J.; and Cpl. Joseph D. Logan, 22, of Willis, Texas.

Bartle and McHone were the pilots of the aircraft.

Riddick was the helicopter's crew chief.

The cause of the crash of the CH-53D helicopter was still being investigated, but a statement issued by the NATO international military coalition said there was no enemy activity in the area when it happened.

The squadron had been sent to Afghanistan in August as part of a seven-month deployment, said Kaneohe Bay spokeswoman 1st Lt. Diann Olson.
The crew was supporting combat operations in the Helmand province, according to the Department of Defense. They were assigned to HMH-363, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

(((Thursday's crash was the deadliest in Afghanistan since August 2011, when 30 American troops died after a Chinook helicopter apparently was shot down in Wardak province in the center of the country.)))

CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters were first used in the 1960s, and the Marine Corps flew them in the Vietnam War.
The CH-53D is the same model as a helicopter that crashed and killed a Marine in a bay off Hawaii on March 29, 2011.

An investigation later revealed mechanical failure caused that accident.

In 2005, the Kaneohe Bay Marine base lost 27 Marines when a CH-53E Super Stallion deployed to Iraq crashed during a desert sandstorm.

Altogether, 30 Marines and a Navy medic were killed in that crash.

All Sea Stallions still used operationally are stationed at Kaneohe Bay. The military plans to replace them with the MV-22 Osprey.

This early DAT deck was actually graced with a very nice A to D chip. I believe the same chip found in the Panasonic SV3700. Therefore a very nice digital transcript was made that day. At this time I was working at a mail order facility selling DAT tapes. Which at the time were very expensive, $12 or more per tape. The individual with this Bonnie recording told us the story above. Is it true? Who knows but he use to buy DAT tapes from us regularly. He made us a cassette of this famous recording and we bugged him to make us a DAT copy for months. He did not have the means to do DAT to DAT. On a visit to the 'store' in Stamford in 1992 we finally were able to make 1 DAT clone. I subsequently cloned that DAT. Most likely the clone was made between a Panasonic SV3700 and a Sony 59ES. But, possibly between 2 SV3700's. At the 'shop' we had so many DAT decks with many configurations. I have no doubt this is direct from the Pre-FM Reels and one listen and you will have no doubt either. Easily one of the finest recordings by any musician at any time."

But even within the F.B.I., there are tensions. "There are three F.B.I.'s," this agent tells me. "There are the [56] field offices, there's [headquarters in] Washington, and then there's [the field office in] New York."

Often, a retired agent says, those in the field are suspicious of Washington. "Dreamland," they called it in his day, because they believed those who weren't on the ground investigating cases were clueless. "[Agents] out in the field never want to give a case to D.C., because they believe headquarters is a hindrance to their investigations," says the agent, who also notes there is a paranoia that politics might interfere at headquarters. New York has an especially dim view of Washington and a reputation for fierce independence. "There is a renegade quality to the New York F.B.I.," says a former prosecutor, which, he claims, can take the form of agents leaking to the press to advance their own interests or to influence an investigation. "New York leaks like a sieve," concurs another former prosecutor.

There is also tension with the prosecutors in the Justice Department. The F.B.I.'s job is to investigate potential crimes, but they need one of the 93 U.S. Attorney's Offices, or an attorney at so-called Main Justice, in Washington, to open a case. Agents often feel that prosecutors aren't bold enough to bring the cases the F.B.I. has investigated. "If prosecutors don't move forward, it's often perceived by agents that they didn't have the stones," says Ronald Hosko, who was assistant director of the F.B.I.'s Criminal Investigative Division until he retired in 2014. Prosecutors, on the other hand, think that agents don't want to understand the legal nuances that may separate smoke from prosecutable cases. "The F.B.I. thinks everything is criminal, particularly if they have spent more than a week on it," says a veteran prosecutor.

Comey had early exposure to the law-enforcement community in that his grandfather, whom he calls one of his heroes, was a beat cop who worked his way up to commissioner of the Yonkers Police Department. Chris Gair, a classmate at the University of Chicago, says, "He didn't go through law school saying he wanted to be a prosecutor, but we all knew he was determined to be one of the good guys."

When Rudy Giuliani was the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, he brought the young Comey into the highly prestigious office, where from 1987 to 1993 he was in charge of the case against financier Marc Rich, who had fled the U.S. after being indicted for tax evasion and illegal dealings with Iran. In 1996, Comey served as deputy special counsel for the Senate Whitewater Committee and, later that year, became an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. In 2002, he was named the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, where his most widely known case resulted in putting lifestyle guru Martha Stewart behind bars for obstruction of justice and making false statements. As U.S. attorney for the Southern District, he also led a criminal investigation into Bill Clinton's highly controversial pardon of Rich, which resulted in no prosecution. President George W. Bush then appointed him deputy attorney general, in 2003.

But two cases established his reputation in legal and political circles. The first involved obtaining indictments for the 1996 Khobar Towers incident, when 19 American military personnel were killed in a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia. The career prosecutors at Main Justice had been working on the case for nearly five years, so long that the statute of limitations was about to expire on some of the possible charges. Comey and another prosecutor named John Davis worked on it for about three months, and then, over a weekend, Comey holed up in his office and wrote a detailed indictment of one Lebanese and 13 Saudi suspects.

Even more famous is Comey's dramatic hospital-room confrontation with members of the Bush administration, in early March of 2004, over the secret warrantless domestic-eavesdropping program, which caused a national furor when the press revealed its existence in late 2005. In what The Washington Post later called "the most riveting 20 minutes of Congressional testimony. Maybe ever," Comey told the story of how he, as acting attorney general, filled in for his boss, John Ashcroft, who was hospitalized. After refusing to re-authorize the program, which he believed was illegal, Comey discovered that other members of the administration were planning an end run to get an incapacitated Ashcroft to sign off on it in his hospital bed. Comey "ran, literally ran," up the stairs to prevent that, he testified. The next day he considered resigning.

Peter Kachlein's regiment of Northampton County, Pa., associators on 17 July 1776, and John Spangenberg (c.1748-1824) was named the regiment's sergeant major on that same date. Australia cautioned the French contractor - hours before the $90bn submarine deal was cancelled - that its achievement of a key contractual milestone did "not provide any authorisation to continue work".

The letter, sent to Naval Group on 15 September, is at the heart of an extraordinary diplomatic rift between France and Australia, with the French foreign minister telling a parliamentary hearing this week that "someone lied".

The Guardian can now publish the full letter, having obtained it under Australia's freedom of information (FOI) laws. The defence department released the requested document to the Guardian on Saturday morning, several hours after the Australian newspaper published an article quoting portions of the letter.

The letter - which appears to be carefully worded with a focus on contractual matters - said the Australian government "has provided guidance to Naval Group regarding the continuation of work and reimbursement of work".

But the director general of the Future Submarine Program - Royal Australian Navy Commodore Craig Bourke - added a caveat about the government not yet granting authorisation to proceed.

He told Naval Group: "The matters addressed in this correspondence do not provide any authorisation to continue work or for the reimbursement of that work under CWS1 [Core Work Scope 1], other than in accordance with References A, B and C."

Reference B means the submarine design contract, but references A and C were blacked out by the FOI decision maker, apparently to protect "trade secrets or commercially valuable information".

In the letter, Bourke also wrote: "I confirm the exit of the Functional Ship System Functional Review (SFR) has been achieved as required under the Submarine Design Contract (SDC) at Reference B."

He said the Australian government "reminds Naval Group that this exit does not remove the obligations" outlined in a different letter sent a week earlier.

The 15 September letter was addressed to Guillaume Jampy of Naval Group in Paris, and appears to have been copied to John Davis, the chief executive of Naval Group Australia.

In the FOI request, the Guardian also sought the exact time the letter was sent to Naval Group. Internal defence records indicate the document was created on 15 September at 12.05pm, Canberra time, and modified at 4.34pm, Canberra time, (8.34am, Paris time).

The Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, has said he informed the French president, Emmanuel Macron, of the decision to terminate the contract a few hours later - about 8.35pm Canberra time (12.35pm, Paris time).

Morrison said he had been unable to secure a call "and so I directly messaged him Australia's decision in a personal correspondence". French officials have suggested that Morrison's office made only half-hearted efforts to inform Macron of its decision beforehand.

Unnur was a top student in Nursing at McGill University (1961) and an Outstanding Graduate for her Master's at the University of Washington (1963). She was a public servant for Canada and during university she served on committees pursuing social goals that seemed radical back then, such as health services restructuring and status of women. John was a MD and studied at the National Hospital for Neurological Diseases in London, UK as a Medical Research Council Fellow. The University of Western Ontario has presented John with the Lifetime Achievement Award and the designations of Professor Emeritus and Elder Statesman. Later in his career he worked in administration and health policy and served on the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Adalsteinn Brown's mother, Unnur, comes from a prominent Icelandic immigrant family who emigrated to Winnipeg, Alberta. Adalsteinn's maternal grandparents are Holmfridur (Frida) Josefsdottir Kristjansson and Fridrik Kristjansson. Here are some of their offspring:
- Asa MacDonnell (deceased), married to Dr. John A. MacDonnell. John established the first Geriatric Clinic Teaching Unit in Canada and was the founding and executive member of the Canadian Association of Gerontology. He was also the President of the Canadian Society of Geriatric Medicine and was awarded Queen's Anniversary Medals. He was a key figure in establishing two-way educational and professional exchanges between Canada and the UK.

- Gudbjorg (Berta) (deceased), married to Douglas Freeman Parkhill. Survived by son Rik, who is the former CEO of FirstCaribbean International Bank (formerly of offshore banks of CIBC) and currently the Managing Director of Clariti Strategic Advisors. Gudbjorg worked as a medical lab technician, spending time in Winnipeg, London (UK), and Toronto; later in life she was a successful residential real estate agent in Ottawa and Toronto. Douglas worked briefly with AVCO Corporation (a defense and aerospace company - now owned by Textron)as Deputy Manager of the Computer and Electronic Systems Department. John was also an employee with MITRE Corporation for seven years, where he became head of its Satellite Communications Systems. He was also an active and loyal member of the Lion's Club and was made a lifetime member. He was chairman of the Governor's Council for the Lion's Club, a group made up of Governors from Manitoba Northwest, Ontario, and Minnesota. During Adalsteinn's funeral Neil Bardal was one of his honorary pallbearers. Neil was an active Mason and was Deputy Grand Master at time of death. Neil was a member of the Manitoba Club, Canadian Club, and Rotary Club.
