Three US servicemen - Sergeant Jim Penniston, his driver Ed Cabansag and security officer John Burroughs - were sent from RAF Bentwaters to investigate, driving down a logging track into the forest before proceeding on foot towards an object that resembled an "aircraft on fire".
Penniston claims the bright glow eventually subsided to reveal a triangular black object with a glassy-metallic surface that glimmered with strange red and blue lights. He could see no landing gear, no exhaust, no windows but he noticed strange symbols he hoped would reveal an insignia identifying some top-secret US experimental craft. But on closer inspection, the symbols appeared more like hieroglyphs, cryptic designs he couldn't understand.
In the 2014 book, Encounter In Rendlesham Forest, Penniston revealed: "The air was filled with electricity - like static. You could feel it on your skin as you approached the object. There was also a sense of slowness, like time itself was an effort."
Burroughs agreed: "The nearer we got to that thing the more uneasy I felt… it was as if I was moving in slow motion. I felt really hot and as if the hair was standing up on the back of my head."
A collaborative work by Nick Pope - a former MOD employee involved in UFO investigations - Burroughs and Penniston, the book also reveals that before the three US servicemen returned to report their findings at RAF Bentwaters the sergeant touched the mysterious glyphs on the craft's surface.
Transfixed by a bright white light, Penniston emerged from a trance-like experience to find himself standing near the craft, which began to glow before moving off above the trees and vanishing out of sight.
The encounter had seemed like just a few minutes to the servicemen but after their ordeal was over they thought their watches must have been incorrect as they showed a few hours had actually elapsed.
"During the night I was often wakening with thoughts, or rather images, of visions of ones and zeros running through my mind," Penniston recounts in the book, adding that he continued to see them the following day until he wrote them down in his notebook, along with drawings of the strange glyphs. After finishing his notes the images of the ones and zeros vanished from his mind and he put the notebook away and forgot about them.
The UFO sighting quickly became a hot topic at the base and on 27 December strange lights were again reported by airmen, leading to a team led by Lt Colonel Charles Halt being sent from Bentwaters to sort out the matter once and for all.
Halt and his team were in the forest from soon after midnight early on 28 December through to just before dawn. During this time they took samples of soil and damaged tree bark, photographed landing marks identified by Burroughs, Penniston and Cabansag, measured a hole in the tree canopy at the point where they had seen the UFO leave 48 hours earlier and used Geiger counters to take radiation readings.
Halt intermittently recorded the team's progress on a cassette tape that runs for 18 minutes and was released to British UFO investigators in July l984 by a senior US officer who'd held a copy of it for four years.
On this dramatic audio account Halt and his men are clearly witnessing strange lights that they are unable to explain.
Many sceptics claim the lights witnessed by the airmen came from the Orford Ness lighthouse about 10 kilometres east of the forest but with many civilian witnesses, all familiar with the area, also reporting strange lights it seems unlikely this was the source.
The case has been a point of great debate ever since, but news reports from March 2015 telling of Burroughs securing a large settlement from the US government as a result of injuries suffered during the incident seems to vindicate the airmen's testimony.

New Rendlesham Testimony Reveals Second UFO Landing

Two former U.S. Air Force security police officers have come forward with explosive claims about a previously unreported UFO landing during Britain's most famous UFO incident, alleging the encounter involved non-human entities and was captured on military film before being systematically suppressed.
Larry Warren and Steve Longero, both stationed at RAF Bentwaters during the December 1980 Rendlesham Forest incidents, revealed their accounts during a recent Reality Check interview with investigative journalist Ross Coulthart. According to Warren, who has faced decades of skepticism from both officials and UFO researchers, a large triangular craft landed at a location called Capel Green during a separate incident from the widely reported forest encounter involving Sergeant Jim Penniston and John Burroughs.
"I saw a triangular object that was about 20 feet across," Warren stated during the interview. "It went up to a rounded kind of top. It had a reddish amber light at the top. It kept distorting and changing."
Warren described the craft as snow white in color and completely silent, positioning himself just 15 feet from the object. According to his testimony, the craft appeared to defy conventional aerodynamics with parts that "just didn't look aerodynamic."
The most significant aspect of Warren's account involves his claim that entities emerged from the craft. "This being, thing, or whatever, I've never said alien, came off the surface of this object,"
Warren explained. "It was like a bubble... just a part of the fabric of that craft separated on the ground."
According to Warren, three humanoid figures with large black eyes appeared, resembling what UFO researchers commonly describe as "grey" entities that communicated telepathically.
For over four decades, Warren's claims were largely dismissed. However, recent investigations have uncovered multiple corroborating witnesses.
According to the interview, Adrian Bustinza, who can be heard on Colonel Halt's famous audio recording from that night, has confirmed Warren was present at Capel Green.
Steve Longero, Warren's former roommate from security forces training, remained silent for 35 years before finally supporting Warren's account.

Right-hand man killed in crash of helicopter on Catalina Island

LONG BEACH - Family members on Wednesday remembered John Terry as a motivated 25-year-old who loved his job as an assistant manager for Island Express, a Long Beach-based helicopter company.
Terry was riding in a helicopter operated by Island Express when it crashed on Catalina Island Saturday morning, killing three people and injuring three others.
The Eurocopter AS-350 reportedly took off from Long Beach and went down in drizzly weather about 9:20a.m. near the Banning House Lodge at Two Harbors.
Also killed was the aircraft's pilot, Emeric Maillet, 33, of Lakewood, and Tania Hurd, a 46-year-old culinary arts teacher at John Burroughs High School in Burbank.
The three injured, two women and one man, were transported to area hospitals. Two were critically injured. Reports of their conditions were not available on Wednesday.
Authorities are still not sure what caused the crash. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Terry Williams said all of the wreckage was recovered on Tuesday and that the helicopter's turboshaft engine is being shipped back to the manufacturer for a "teardown" analysis. The entire investigation could take up to a year, he said.
Terry's brother, Tony Natale, said the family is in a deep state of shock. They're also dealing with another loss. Less than two week's earlier, Terry's aunt, Cindy Donahoo, died of a heart attack.
"It's been a rough week," Natale said.
Terry's family has houses in Avalon on Catalina and in Long Beach, his brother said. Terry grew up traveling between the two cities until he started high school in Avalon.
When he turned 18, he moved permanently to Long Beach where he got a job with Island Express. Pete Ruiz, station manager for Island Express, said Terry was his "right-hand man."
"He was the most organized person I ever worked with," Ruiz said.
Terry was a ramp agent who would accompany the pilot on flights to help unload the equipment and embark passengers.
Ruiz said Island Express, a relatively small company with about 21 employees, was in mourning this week.
It is a family-run business that has been operating helicopter tours out of Long Beach since 1982. Owner John Moore was not available for comment Wednesday.
Maillet, originally from France, had worked at the company for more than six years and was well-respected pilot, he said.
"It's been really hard. We've never had a loss like this before," Ruiz said. "We love both of them like family. We always hung out after work; for birthday parties."
Ruiz said no one at the company can speculate on what caused the crash.
"We're letting the investigators handle it," he said. "We're just taking it day by day."
Terry loved working at Island Express and was moving up in the company, his brother said. He was planning to getting his pilot's license and was going to re-enroll at Cal State Long Beach in the fall.
"He was a great, well-motivated person," Natale said.
He also loved his dog, a golden retriever named Josh.

The US ultimatum to leave the INF Treaty within 2 months if fulfilled threatens the survival of all such arrangements including the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), Director of the UN Office of the International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms, John Burroughs, told Sputnik.
"Final US withdrawal from the INF Treaty threatens to unravel all arms control arrangements, and the stability and predictability they provide between the United States and Russia," Burroughs said. "The INF Treaty... was a foundation for subsequent agreements on reduction of long-range nuclear forces. If that foundation is removed, it is unclear whether New START and control and reduction of long-range nuclear forces generally can be sustained."
urroughs pointed out, however, that Washington and Moscow still have time to hold talks to save the treaty because a US withdrawal would not take effect until six months after the ultimatum period.
"This all means that there is a long period - eight months - for the US and Russia to resolve their disputes about claimed violations of the INF Treaty," he said. "And it can be done, through negotiations and transparency measures, [and] visits in person to the installations in question."
What was really needed was the creation of a multilateral process for reductions of nuclear arms leading to zero, Burroughs advised, although setting up such a mechanism would be even more challenging.

Staff Sgt Jim Penniston and Airman John Burroughs claim to have witnessed a small triangular craft which landed in Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk - in what has been dubbed the UK's Roswell incident.
Sgt Penniston apparently got so close, he even managed to touch the craft, describing it as "smooth to the touch" and covered with strange symbols similar to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs - before it took off.
Now in secret video footage obtained exclusively by Sun Online, the deputy commander of the base at the time, Charles Halt, can be heard stating that Burroughs "may have been abducted" and that the men were "unaccounted for" for hours.
It is believed it is the first time Halt has ever made the bombshell claims - and they did not appear on his official memo of the incident which was sent to the Ministry of Defense.
The mysterious Rendlesham incident took place in December 1980 - at the height of the Cold War - in woods just outside the twin NATO air bases of RAF Woodbridge and RAF Bentwaters.
Penniston and Burroughs headed into the woods to investigate some strange flashing lights, which is where they saw the UFO.
Two nights later, the UFO returned, and Halt led a team of military experts into the woods in a bid to "debunk" the claims.

However, the military team were shocked when a beam of light from the UFO hit the ground just a few feet away.
Halt, who made an 18-minute audio recording of the incident, went on to write a memo detailing what happened which he sent to the MoD but defence chiefs said the incident was of "no defence significance."
For years it has been rumoured Penniston and Burroughs, who were security policemen, may have been snatched by the UFO as they were out of radio communication with their Central Security Control (CSC) for several hours - but no one officially involved in the incident has ever publicly stated it.
Now former British police detective Gary Heseltine has released a video clip from 2010 - when he toured the forest with Halt for a documentary that was never made.
The video clip was recorded by Heseltine's wife during a break in filming and shows Heseltine walking with Halt in the forest in an effort to retrace his steps during the third night of UFO activity during the 1980 incident.
In the video, Halt says: "He [Burroughs] may have been abducted who knows … You know there is LOST TIME, we know that? They were not on the radio … You've got men out in the forest that you can't .... unnaccounted for hours."
Heseltine, 57, of Scholes, West Yorkshire, told Sun Online: "My wife Lynn took quite a few video clips as we walking around the forest.
"It was only recently while watching them again that I picked up on the admission by Halt that Penniston and Burroughs had been missing off air 'for several hours'.
"I did some research and realised that this admission had never been made public by Halt and so for the benefit of taking the case forward I have decided to release the clip."
Heseltine, who edits the UFO Truth website, added: "As someone who is just trying to piece together the events in Rendlesham Forest, I think it is in the public interest that they have a right to know such information and hence why I have released the clip."

Former UFO investigator at the MoD Nick Pope said the revelation was "hugely significant".
"This is a bombshell statement, coming from someone who was Deputy Base Commander of one of the most sensitive military bases in the NATO alliance, at the height of the Cold War.
"It's one thing to see a UFO, as Halt and many of the men under his command did, but it's quite another to suggest one of your men might have been abducted by aliens.
"A few weeks ago it would have sounded crazy for a senior American military officer to believe such things, but following the revelations about the Pentagon's secret UFO project, maybe it's not so strange after all.
