Cheneymania Seizes the Democrats

Last week it was revealed that beloved elder statesman Richard B. "Dick" Cheney will be voting for Kamala Harris come November 5. The news came during an interview of the former vice president's daughter, Liz, a former three-term congresswoman from Wyoming-a seat, incidentally, Cheney p?re held in the 1980s before being tapped for the post of defense secretary under George H. W. Bush.

Like her father, Liz is also abandoning the GOP, for now anyway-she too will be voting for Kamala Harris. Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley-Dillion quickly issued a statement saying that Vice President KamalaHarris "is proud to have the support of Vice President Cheney, and deeply respects his courageto put country over party...the very future of our republic is at stake in this election."

In and of itself, the fact that the father-daughter tandem has come out against Trump is not at all surprising, especially given the animosity that has developed between Liz Cheney and Trump over the former's handling of the January 6 committee.

More interesting was thereaction by Democratic partisans to the news: The liberal hive mind could barely contain its, well, "joy." Perhaps the most embarrassing reactionto the news came from liberal journalist Joan Walsh who wrote that she found Liz's endorsement "strangely moving."

"Liz Cheney has sacrificed more, personally, than I have to advance the truth about Donald Trump, once she got it," wrote Walsh.Turning to her heroine directly, Walsh continued, "I'll be trying to track her down on the campaign trail, where she says she'll be. Liz, I told you we could find common ground. Let's have a cup of coffee. Or even a beer?"Aw.

The wild applause that met Liz's announcement in Texas is indicative of where liberals now place their priorities-and goes a long way toward explaining why they cannot be trusted on matter of national security.

As Chip Gibbons trenchantly observed in 2022,
compared to Dick Cheney's crimes against democracy, Trump is an amateur. Cheney reduced nations to rubble, shredded the Bill of Rights, and enacted programs of surveillance, abduction, detention, and torture(the Patriot Act)more in line with the state terrorism of military dictatorships than the norms of liberal democracy.

There is a certain sad irony in watching the same liberalswho have spent months condemning the alleged dangers posed by the Heritage Foundation's Project 2025so lustily applaud Dick's defection. After all, Cheney and his mentor, the disgraced Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, are the godfathers of the theory that animates the most controversial aspects of Project 2025, the theory of the unitary executive. Martin Lederman, who served in the office of legal counsel in the Clinton and Bush administrations, notes that as vice president, Cheney
believes that the president and the president's close advisers should have the final word-indeed the only word-on all matters within the executive branch...it seems to me, a central part of his philosophy and his practice as vice president to try to stamp out or to relegate to the margins any dissenting views, whether it be in the military among the uniformed military and the JAGs; or in the intelligence agencies, when they're not giving him the stories about Iraq and elsewhere that he wants to hear...He really believes that the president should be the be-all-and-end-all within the executive branch. That's the unitary executive theory.

Clearly,Dick's almost unsurpassed record of war crimes no longer disturbs the liberal conscience; indeed, in the years since Iraq, the Democratic Party has appropriated much of the neocon agenda as their own.

With just under two months to go until the election, Kamala Harris is riding a wave of support from Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Hollywood, and, as we have seen, members of the old-guard Republican establishment.

As all this unfolds,the Republicans are slowly undergoing a transformation of their own; today the party is more populist, more pro-worker than at any time since Teddy Roosevelt. Meanwhile, liberals like Walsh are busy debasing themselves by making common cause with a family of war criminals.

14. In 1994, Harris began dating Willie Brown, a powerhouse in California politics who was then the speaker of the state assembly and was 30 years older than Harris. From his perch in the assembly, Brown appointed Harris to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board and the Medical Assistance Commission-positions that together paid her around $80,000 a year on top of her prosecutor's salary.
15. In 1995, Brown was elected mayor of San Francisco. That December, Harris broke up with him because "she concluded there was no permanency in our relationship," Brown told Joan Walsh in 2003. "And she was absolutely right."
16. After being recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's office by a former colleague in Alameda, Harris cracked down on teenage prostitution in the city, reorienting law enforcement's approach to focus on the girls as victims rather than as criminals selling sex.
17. During this time, Harris courted influential friends among San Francisco's moneyed elite. In 2003, they would provide the financial backing to make her a formidable candidate in her first campaign for office.
18. In 2003, she ran for district attorney in San Francisco against incumbent Terence Hallinan, her former boss. Her message, a top strategist on that campaign told POLITICO, was: "We're progressive, like Terence Hallinan, but we're competent like Terence Hallinan is not."
19. She was elected in a runoff with 56.5 percentof the vote. With her victory, she became the first Black woman in California to be elected district attorney.
20. That same election, Gavin Newsom was elected mayor, succeeding Willie Brown. Newsom, now governor of California, is a close friend of hers, and the two have even vacationed together.
21. During her first three years as district attorney, San Francisco's conviction rate jumped from 52 to 67 percent.
22. One of Harris' most controversial decisions came in 2004 when she declined to pursue the death penalty against the man who murdered San Francisco police officer Isaac Espinoza. At the funeral, Senator Dianne Feinstein delivered a eulogy in which she criticized Harris, who was in the audience, prompting a standing ovation from the hundreds of officers in attendance.
Harris would be shunned by police unions for the next decade.

The silly smear of Bill Barr as an agent of a 'Catholic cult'

Bill Barr is plugged into, and gets his marching ­orders from, a network of reactionary Catholics, whose tentacles reach into the highest echelons of power. At the center is a sinister, secretive organization with a Latin name: Opus Dei, "the Work of God." That's the impression you might take away from a new profile of the attorney general in The New Yorker. All that's missing are the hair shirts, cilices and murderous albino monks - the kind of thing too many secular elites believe about the lives of devout ­Catholics generally and members of Opus Dei especially.

The winding and often tendentious essay paints Barr as President Trump's wartime consigliere, out to dish payback to the US intelligence community for launching #RussiaGate - rather than, you know, look into real abuses recognized as such by foreign-intelligence judges and even FBI honcho Christopher Wray. Along the way, writer David Rohde dwells on Barr's Catholic faith and worldview. He brings up Barr's association with the Catholic Information Center, a small cultural nonprofit in Washington, where swamp denizens stop by to buy spiritual books, hear the Mass and generally find uplift. "Led by a member of the arch-conservative group Opus Dei, the center is a hub for Washington's influential conservatives," Rohde darkly suggests. "The center's board of directors ­remains a nexus of politically connected Catholics. [White House counsel] Pat Cipollone and Barr have both served on the board, as has Leonard Leo, the executive vice president of the Federalist Society." It could be that these men meet at the CIC afterhours to plot how to install Melania Trump as the Most Catholic Empress of the Americas. ... Or it could be that they, like members of any other faith, seek spiritual fellowship and give their nonworking hours to helping others find the same.

As far as Barr-Opus Dei conspiracy theories go, Rohde's was relatively mild. The Guardian in October mentioned Barr's connection to the CIC, which it said is "staffed by priests from the secretive, ultra-orthodox Catholic sect Opus Dei." The same month, The Nation's Joan Walsh sounded the alarm about Barr's links to "extremist Catholic institutions," while an article on the liberal Web site ­Alternet speculated that Barr may be an Opus Dei member. The group, it said, had taught Barr to "put away his scruples."

This is egregious nonsense. For starters, Barr isn't, in fact, a member, as the organization was forced to clarify in November, breaking its usual policy of not identifying members or non-members. More important, people who attend Opus Dei ­activities don't show up for ­ominous conspiracies.
