General Motors' CFO Resigns After Just Two Years To Work At Stripe

Mired in recession and dealing with the toughest environment for auto sales over the last several decades, the U.S. auto industry has seen another top executive depart. Just days after we reported turnover at the CEO role at Ford, General Motors is following with a C-suite shakeup of its own, as its CFO leaves after just two years to work at a fintech startup.

The company announced today that John Stapleton, GM North America chief financial officer, has been named its acting global chief financial officer, effective Aug. 15, after the resignation of the company's current CFO, Dhivya Suryadevara.

Suryadevara is leaving the company on short notice, similar to the departure of Ford's CEO, Jim Hackett, who quit last week. According to Bloomberg, Suryadevara will join PayPal competitor Stripe, as its CFO, the San Francisco-based company said.

GM CEO Mary Barra said that "Dhivya has been a transformational leader in her tenure as CFO. She has helped the company strengthen our balance sheet, improve our cost structure, focus on cash generation and drive the right investments for our future. We wish her every success."

Suryadevara said: "I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given at GM. While I look forward to a new opportunity that will allow me to apply my skills in a new sector, I have great confidence in GM's trajectory and future." Stapleton, who is temporarily taking over duties, has been with General Motors since 1990 and has served in several different finance roles with the company.

GM shares were up as much as 3.5% to 28.96 shortly after the open of regular trading Tuesday.

Hackett will be replaced by chief operating officer Jim Farley, who oversees the automaker's global operations and has been behind recent product revamps including the relaunch of the Ford Bronco. Farley and Hackett will work closely over the next two months to ensure a smooth transition.

"I am very grateful to Jim Hackett for all he has done to modernize Ford and prepare us to compete and win in the future," executive chairman Bill Ford said in a statement. "Jim Farley matches an innate feel for cars and customers with great instincts for the future and the new technologies that are changing our industry."

Hackett, whose departure comes more than three years after being named CEO in May 2017, engineered Ford's push into the smart vehicle space. He will stay on as a special adviser through March 2021.

Defying defund the police movement, these companies are backing the blue

The killing of George Floyd in May while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers has set off a wave of protests and a movement to defunding the police. However, amid the push by many corporations vowing to stand with the Black Lives Matter movement, some CEOs and business figures have stepped up to defend the police, even as public support for police has at times led to social backlash and buying boycotts. Here are a few companies who have stood up and are backing the blue.

Ford: Last week, some employees of Ford wrote an open letter to CEO Jim Hackett to stop production of the law enforcement vehicles, including the Ford Police Interceptor. But Hackett refused to stop operations of law enforcement vehicles it's been producing for nearly 70 years. In a statement to the employees, he said he did not view the production and distribution of police vehicles as an addition to the defund the police conversation, saying it is not "controversial that the Ford Police Interceptor helps officers do their job." Axon: The technology company that supplies police with nonlethal weapons, such as tasers, defends its continued production of weapons. Hadi Partovi, a director on Axon's board, said in a statement that the company is helping the public with the types of weapons it produces. "The transparency and accountability provided by bodycams aren't magical solutions to prevent deaths, but they do give a clearer picture of what happened." Axon is also calling for more innovation and technology to stop police brutality.

Égard Watches: In June, a Los Angeles-based luxury watch company released a pro-law enforcement ad that showed police and a dog rescue. Company CEO lan Srulovicz said he did the ad because he felt like "our politicians, the media, companies around the country, they turned their back on police." Chick-Fil-A: In June, the fast-food restaurant was under fire after some chains distributed shirts supporting the pro-law enforcement organization Blue Lives Matter. The company issued a statement that the individual statements did not reflect the entirety of the company, however it said it did endorse the efforts. Local establishments on multiple occasions over the years have created shirts expressing support, including shirts saying "Back the Blue." Five Guys: After three police officers were denied service at a Five Guys restaurant in Daphne, Ala., the company said that it had fired some of the employees and others would receive additional training. "Five Guys and the Daphne, AL franchise want to thank the Daphne Police Department for their support in working together toward a resolution," the Five Guys statement said. "As we uphold our commitment to fair, respectful, and equal treatment for all customers, please know that the actions and sentiments of a few employees in Daphne, AL do not represent Five Guys or the local franchisee."

Google: An employee petition requesting that Google leadership ban police from using Google products received over 1,100 signatures. The CEO issued a statement condemning racial injustice, but said products such as Gmail, Google Suit, and Google Cloud Platform would remain available to all. NASCAR: After banning confederate memorabilia from the races, NASCAR has allowed one of its drivers to express her support for law enforcement. For a race at the Kentucky Speedway, Angela Ruch's truck will feature a pro-police wrap. The car will feature the American flag with the blue line designed for police officers and the BackTheBlue hashtag, among other supportive displays. Ruch is partnering with The Wounded Blue, an organization supporting police officers wounded in the line of duty. "Everywhere you turn today, good, hard-working police officers are under attack," Ruch said. "We want to show law enforcement officers that we've got their backs."

Ford Motor Company Employees Call for End of Police Car Production

The Ford Motor Company's website features the automaker's long relationship with law enforcement that dates back seven decades and includes its tagline for the vehicles it has designed for the men and women in blue - "police-tested, street proven."

But now the wave of social unrest and virtue signaling following the death of George Floyd while in police custody is taking over the corporate world, including at Ford, where workers are urging leadership to stop manufacturing cop cars.

This despite the fact that Ford expresses pride about its connection to law enforcement, according to its website:

Ford introduced the first-ever police package in 1950. Over the following decades, we've worked alongside law enforcement agencies with a purpose-built philosophy that continues today. Every vehicle is built with what we call the Ford Police DNA - safety, durability, performance, purpose built and upfit friendly.

But now anti-police rhetoric is spilling over into action taken against not just police officers who have committed crimes but all men and women in uniform - 800,000 in the United States, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Detroit automakers, in general, have taken a number of steps to respond to the crisis. General Motors donated $10 million to groups promoting racial justice and social inclusion, including the NAACP.

NBC reported that a letter from Ford employers leaked to The Verge website asked for the company to "cease development, production, and sale of all custom police vehicles and products."

Ford also provided a statement to NBC.

In the letter, the employees argued that Ford, by building vehicles used by police, is actively sustaining racism and oppression in America. As a way to address this, they urged executives to discontinue all production of police vehicles.

On May 25th, 2020 George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis Police, alongside a Ford Police Interceptor. Days later, police officers drove Ford Police Interceptors into crowds of protesters in New York City and Los Angeles. During these past weeks, our vehicles have been used to deploy chemical weapons banned by the Geneva Convention.

Throughout our history, the vehicles that Ford employees design and build have been used as accessories to police brutality and oppression. We know that while many join, support, or supply law enforcement with good intentions, these racist policing practices that plague our society are historic and systemic-a history and system perpetuated by Ford for over 70 years-ever since Ford introduced the first-ever police package in 1950. As an undeniable part of that history and system, we are long overdue to "think and act differently" on our role in racism.

The letter was reportedly being circulated around Ford's headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., and employees were being asked to digitally sign on.

Inevitably, Hackett caught wind of the letter, or at least its sentiment, and addressed the issue in an office memo.

In the memo, he kindly but forcefully clapped back at the demands with logic and common sense.

Here's an example: "The issues plaguing police credibility have nothing to do with the vehicles they're driving." One would think such a notion would be obvious, but evidently it needed to be explained.

Ford's Struggles Continue: 6 Top Executives Paid More Than Its 2019 Net Income

While Ford's (F) vehicle production remains closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, the automaker is looking to preserve its cash, recently taking down $15 billion from its revolving credit facility, it has been revealed that the cumulative compensation of six of the company's top executives exceeds its annual net income.

In 2019, Ford reported a net income of $47 million, down from $3.7 billion in 2018, but paid six executives $70 million combined, in a year where the automaker has been troubled by a botched Ford Explorer launch, recalls, and warranty costs, USA Today reported.

According to the news outlet, CEO Jim Hackett was paid $17.36 million in 2019, while Executive Chairman Bill Ford received $16.76 million, and Tim Stone, chief financial officer for the company, was paid $8.32 million after being hired on April 15. Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks, who Stone replaced, reportedly made $8.32 million in 2019, while Jim Farley, who was president, New Business and Technology and Strategy, at the time, received $8.36 million while Joe Hinrichs, then-president, Automotive, was paid $11 million.

Cash has been Ford's main focus as of recent, along with other automakers like GM that drew from its revolving credit facility and suspended dividends as well as stock buybacks. Ford has also suspended its dividend and is reported to have $30 billion in cash on hand as of April 9..

With the coronavirus continuing to bear down, Ford is in the midst of a struggle as it contends with re-opening plants during the COVID-19 pandemic and determining when its highly-anticipated Ford Bronco should be released as well as the new F-150 pickup truck - both scheduled for launch in 2020.

Ford reported that it expected a $600 million loss before taxes, but disclosed in its Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it had an estimated net loss of $2 billion for January through March because of the coronavirus pandemic due to shutdowns and a decline in vehicle sales, the news outlet said.

Shares of Ford stock were up 5.62% as of 3:51 p.m. EDT on Monday.

The plant will produce a simplified ventilator design licensed by GE Healthcare from Florida-based Airon Corp.

White House Defense Production Act Coordinator Peter Navarro praised the Ford/GE partnership for working on "Trump time."

"Just as Ford in the last century moved its manufacturing might seamlessly from auto to tank production during World War II, the Ford team is working with GE Healthcare to use its awesome engineering and manufacturing capabilities to voluntarily help this nation solve one of its most pressing problems. We salute that effort and look forward to the first ventilators rolling off the Michigan assembly line in record time - and we'll be there to salute that milestone," Navarro said.

Ford said the Rawsonville plant will produce the ventilators nearly around the clock, with 500 paid volunteer UAW-represented employees working on three shifts. At full production, Ford said it will be able to make 7,200 "Model A-E" ventilators per week, a far faster pace than the 3-per day of the equivalent ventilators currently produced at Airon's Florida facility.

Ford says it's going to lay off 7,000 people worldwide

Ford is cutting 7,000 white-collar jobs, or about 10% of its salaried staff worldwide, as part of a cost-cutting effort it says will save the company about $600 million a year.

Ford says workers will begin to be notified of cuts starting Tuesday, and the terminations will be completed by the end of August. About 2,400 of the jobs cuts are in North America, and 1,500 of the positions were eliminated through a voluntary buyout offer.

The move is an effort to cut bureaucracy within the company and flatten the management structure in addition to its desire to cut costs, according to a letter CEO Jim Hackett sent to employees Monday morning.

Ford's layoffs are similar to white-collar job cuts rival General Motors announced in November, but GM's cuts were deeper. GM eliminated about 8,000 non-union jobs , or 15% of its salaried and contract workers. It also closed five North American factories as part of that announcement.

Ford has been making cuts over the past several months as part of a massive restructuring that is expected to cost thousands of jobs across the globe. The company committed last year to spending $11 billion to reshape its business, hoping to boost sales overseas and modernize its fleet of vehicles by focusing more on electric and autonomous driving tech.

But Ford has been slow to give details of how it will spend the $11 billion and what jobs might be cut as part of the restructuring of the business. It has said it will close three plants in Russia , one factory in Europe and another in Brazil. But it has said the moves announced so far represent only about $1 billion of the $11 billion restructuring it plans to do.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co said on Monday it will eliminate about 10% percent of its global salaried workforce, cutting about 7,000 jobs by the end of August as part of its larger restructuring in a move that will save the No. 2 automaker $600 million annually.

Ford Chief Executive Jim Hackett said in a Monday email to employees that the cuts include both voluntary buyouts and layoffs, and a spokesman added it freezes open positions as well. About 2,300 of the affected people are employed in the United States, the spokesman said.

Within the cuts, Hackett said it will eliminate close to 20% of upper-level managers in a move also meant to reduce bureaucracy and speed decision making.

"To succeed in our competitive industry, and position Ford to win in a fast-changing future, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower managers, speed decision making, focus on the most valuable work and cut costs," Hackett said in the email.

Notification to North American affected employees will begin on Tuesday and the majority will be completed by May 24, he said.

Restructuring work continues in Europe, China, South America and the International Markets Group and the Dearborn, Michigan-based company expects to complete the process in those markets by the end of August, Hackett said.

Ford names Amazon veteran Tim Stone as CFO

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co on Thursday named Amazon.com Inc veteran Tim Stone as chief financial officer, the automaker's first external hire for the role in seven decades.

Stone, 52, replaces Bob Shanks, who will retire at the end of 2019 after serving the company for 42 years.

Stone held various financial roles at Amazon for two decades, and was most recently CFO of Snapchat messaging app owner, Snap Inc.

He decided to quit Snap less than a year after taking the job, becoming the second finance chief to leave the company in a year since the much-criticized redesign of the app.

Stone will take over as CFO on June 1, Ford said.

The No.2 U.S. carmaker said Shanks, 66, will work closely with Stone on the transition and then on special projects through the end of the year.

The last time Ford named an outsider to the role of CFO was in 1949 when Theodore Yntema, previously a consulting economist to Ford, was hired for the position.

Yntema mentored a group of young executives who came to be known as "the whiz kids". The group included Robert McNamara and Arjay Miller, both of whom later became Ford presidents.

Stone will report to Chief Executive Jim Hackett.

"Bob's leadership was integral to Ford's comeback during the great recession," Hackett said.

The automaker also named Mark Ovenden to the role of president of International Markets Group, replacing Peter Fleet, who will retire.

Fleet previously served as president of Asia Pacific - a region that reported the biggest loss during the fourth-quarter, hit by plummeting sales in China.

Ford, which ended 2018 with $23.1 billion in cash, said its losses in China would narrow this year.

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co confirmed on Wednesday it is cutting an unspecified number of U.S. salaried jobs as part of a global reorganization announced last year.

Said Deep, a spokesman for the second largest U.S. automaker, declined to say how many jobs are being slashed but said the company expects the process to be completed by the end of June. He said the restructuring "has resulted in some separations of salaried employees and the reassignment of others."

Ford said last year it was working to reorganize its global salaried workforce that will "result in headcount reduction over time, and this will vary based on team and location."

Last month, Ford said it would close its oldest factory in Brazil. It also said it would get out of its heavy commercial truck business in South America, a move that could cost more than 2,700 jobs.

Ford has said its global reorganization will involve thousands of jobs and possible plant closures in Europe and result in $11 billion in charges.

In January, Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett told employees that 2018 had been "mediocre" and added it was "time to bury the year (2018) in a deep grave, grieve over what might have been and become super focused on meeting, and, in fact, exceeding this year's plan."

Automakers are reducing costs amid fears of a slowdown in auto sales.

General Motors Co is halting production in five plants in North America and has cut about 8,000 salaried jobs, or 15 percent of its white-collar workforce.
