COLUMBIA, S.C. – U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace'sformer fiance and two of his business associates were charged with sex crimes and voyeurismon Wednesday over an episode the South Carolina congresswoman described in detail during a speech last yearon the House floor about how crimes against women are not investigated thoroughly.
John Douglas Osborne committed sex acts on a 23-year-old incapacitated and intoxicated woman while Mace's ex-fiance Patrick Bryant and Eric Bernard Bowman watched, according to sworn statements by agents from the State Law Enforcement Division, which brought the charges.
The men talked about who would assault the woman beforehand, took photos and recorded the assault, which was also seen on a security system feed at the home in Sullivan's Island, an affluent suburb of Charleston, state agents said. The woman had fallen into a pool and was passed out on a couch covering herself with a pillow, agents said.
Another woman who happened to be watching the feed saw the assault and took pictures and wrote about it in a journal, police said. Mace and Bryant were not yet engaged at the time of the October 2018 assault.
Osborne, 46, is charged with first-degree assault and battery and two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Bryant, 53, and Bowman, 46, are each charged with voyeurism.
Along with the voyeurism charge, Bowman was also charged with obstruction of justice after agents said he did a factory reset on a cellphone he knew investigators were seeking in a search warrant, and with publishing the name of a victim of criminal sexual conduct after posting the victim's name and a video of her on X.
Bryant didn't return a message seeking comment on Wednesday, and attorneys who have been listed as representing Bowman and Osborne in other cases did not immediately return messages.
Mace, a Republican, described the assault at length in a nearly hourlong speech in February 2025 that named the men and described other photos and videos found when she looked at Bryant's cellphone when they were still together.
Mace said she "accidentally uncovered some of the most heinous crimes against women imaginable. We're talking about rape, non-consensual photos, non-consensual videos of women and underage girls, and the premeditated, calculated exploitation of women and girls in my district."
At the time, Bryant completely denied the allegations. "I take this matter seriously and will cooperate fully with any necessary legal processes to clear my name," he told The Associated Press.
The State Law Enforcement Division didn't say if their investigation into any of the men is continuing.
After the arrests, Mace released a statement detailing the 25 bills she says will protect victims of sexual assault, harassment or discrimination, including in retaliatory defamation and libel lawsuits that may result from allegations they bring to light.
The Republican, who is leaving the Housethis term after losing her bid to be South Carolina governor, introduced a proposal this week to require that anyone who brings such a case and loses must pay attorney fees for the defendant.
"Protecting women and holding predators accountable isn't a slogan. It's been one of my top priorities in Congress. For too long, survivors have faced broken systems while predators exploited loopholes and walked free,"Mace said in her statement.

South Carolina Senate Votes To Oust State Treasurer Over $1.8 Billion Error
Members of the South Carolina Senate voted on April 21 to remove the state's embattled treasurer for "willful neglect" of his duties, sending the matter to the state House for consideration.
The 33-8 vote followed an hours-long hearing of the full Senate, during which state Sens. Larry Grooms and Stephen Goldfinch, both Republicans, pushed for state Treasurer Curtis Loftis's removal over a $1.8 billion accounting error.

"The big secret of Treasurer Loftis, the one that he's kept hidden away, is that there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars in errors in the Treasury books today, and he doesn't know how to fix them," Grooms said in opening the hearing.
A state Senate Finance subcommittee report released last month said Loftis, a Republican, "failed to maintain the integrity" of South Carolina's banking and investment records after state officials were alerted to an unexplained $1.8 billion in funds under his office's exclusive control.
An outside forensic audit determined that most of the funds in question were not real cash but the result of bookkeeping errors that followed the state's transition to a new accounting system in the 2010s.
Loftis, now in his fourth term, was first elected treasurer in 2010 and has held the office since.
While two other public officials have resigned in connection with the state's accounting issues, Loftis, Grooms said, "remains defiant and refuses to take responsibility for his failures."
Loftis, defending his record, likened himself to President Donald Trump, who vociferously denounced various investigations related to his affairs.
"I'm inspired by President Trump, and I, too, will not back down," Loftis said.

The plane, with five people on board, crashed in the parking lot of a retirement community. Multiple vehicles in the lot caught on fire.
According to new audio, the pilot was heard telling ground agents that there was an open door and he couldn't hear anything because of the wind noise.
"Pull up… the aircraft is down just behind the terminal in the parking lot tree area," the air traffic controller could be heard saying.
Multiple injuries were reported at the scene, including people with burns.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - A rare copy of the U.S. Constitution printed 237 years ago sent to the states to be ratified is being auctioned Thursday evening in North Carolina.
Brunk Auctions is selling the copy - the only of its type thought to be in private hands. The minimum bid of $1 million has already been made. There is no minimum price that must be reached.
This copy was printed after the Constitutional Convention finished drafting the proposed framework of the nation's government in 1787 and sent it to the Congress of the ineffective first American government under the Articles of Confederation, requesting they send it to the states to be ratified by the people.

3 more GOP governors sending National Guard troops to US-Mexico border
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The governors of Virginia, West Virginia and South Carolina on Wednesday joined a growing list of Republican leaders sending their state National Guard soldiers or other state law enforcement officers to the U.S. border with Mexico.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is considered a possible presidential aspirant, announced an executive order directing the deployment of 100 Virginia National Guard soldiers and 21 support personnel. South Carolina's Henry McMaster and West Virginia's Jim Justice announced their deployments shortly thereafter, also in response to a request from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
The announcements bring to at least eight the number of Republican-led states deploying soldiers or offering other assistance in the weeks since Abbott appealed for help.
"The ongoing border crisis facing our nation has turned every state into a border state," Youngkin said in a statement. "As leadership solutions at the federal level fall short, states are answering the call to secure our southern border, reduce the flow of fentanyl, combat human trafficking and address the humanitarian crisis."
resident Joe Biden announced in early May plans to send 1,500 active-duty troops to the border, in addition to the 2,500 National Guard members already there. Those military personnel were tasked with data entry, warehouse support and other administrative duties so that U.S. Customs and Border Protection can focus on fieldwork, the White House said.
But the Virginia deployment and others from Republican-led states have specifically been in support of Texas' Operation Lone Star, which is separate from the active duty and National Guard troops working with the Customs and Border Protection.
Abbott launched Lone Star in 2021, saying that the Biden administration was essentially welcoming illegal immigration. Critics have questioned the effectiveness of the multi-billion dollar operation. Some arrests, including for low-level amounts of marijuana during traffic stops, appeared to have little to do with border security, and some Texas National Guard troops initially complained of low morale, late paychecks and having little to do.
Abbott's request this month came through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, which facilitates state-level mutual aid nationwide. Youngkin and McMaster also joined other governors in Austin last week to discuss border policies.
McMaster's news release said South Carolina's mission is "in the planning phase," with a goal of deployment by July 1. Justice said he had approved the deployment of as many as 50 West Virginia National Guard soldiers and airmen for 30 days.
Youngkin's order said the Virginia troops will answer to a military commander during a 30-day deployment, not any local civilian authorities. The operating cost of the mission is $3.1 million, spokeswoman Macaulay Porter said in an email.
Youngkin, a former private equity executive who is barred under Virginia law from seeking a second consecutive term, is frequently mentioned as a possible 2024 presidential contender. He said earlier this month that he had no plans to launch such a bid this year.
Presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is among the other governors who have announced plans to deploy Guard troops and other officers since Abbott's request was made. Mississippi, Iowa, Tennessee, and Nebraska have also volunteered aid, and other GOP-led states have made similar deployments in recent years, part of the party's criticism of Biden's performance on the border.
CBP said it doesn't have any role with National Guard deployments with individual states, including Texas.
In Virginia, while some Republicans praised Youngkin's decision, the state's Democrats characterized the move as absurd, disingenuous or politically motivated.
"Youngkin for President has officially jumped the shark - our VA National Guard troops shouldn't be used to further presidential ambitions much less fight a MAGA culture war in Texas of all places - Never thought I would see my state so compromised," state Sen. Scott Surovell tweeted.
