Sparta celebrates 50th anniversary of Deke Slayton's space journey

SPARTA, Wis (WKBT) – Sparta marked a major milestone Tuesday as the community kicked off celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Deke Slayton's journey to space.
Known as one of NASA's original Mercury Seven astronauts and a key figure in space exploration history, Slayton's legacy remains vibrant half a century later.

The festivities began at the Space and Bicycle Museum named in his honor, where the day has been dubbed "Rocket Day."
Young aspiring astronauts participated enthusiastically by creating and launching a variety of homemade rockets, including air rockets, straw rockets, and alka seltzer-powered rockets.
This hands-on event captured the spirit of exploration and innovation that Slayton himself embodied.
Local youth like Rose Zickefoose expressed inspiration from the day, sharing, "I think I have always wanted to be an astronaut, so just coming here and seeing that he was from where I was from and he did that was really cool."

The week-long celebration includes several other key events open to the public:
July 15 (Rocket Day): From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the museum, commemorating the exact date of Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) launch on July 15, 1975.
July 17 (Hands Around the Museum): At 2 p.m., community members will gather around the Deke Slayton statue at the museum to hold hands and recreate the historic handshake from the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz mission symbolizing international space cooperation.
July 18: A private family reunion for descendants of Slayton and related families at the Leon Community Center.
July 19 (Panel Discussion): At 1 p.m. in Sparta High School's auditorium, a special panel will feature Kent Slayton (Deke's son), Bill Moon (retired NASA flight controller for ASTP), and Jeff Williams (retired astronaut from Winter, WI, with extensive International Space Station experience). Apple scraps electric car project - Bloomberg
Work on the multibillion-dollar plan dubbed Project Titan started a decade ago

US tech giant Apple has abandoned its decade-long effort to build an electric car, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The anonymous sources told the outlet that the announcement, which Apple made internally on Tuesday, came as a surprise to the nearly 2,000 employees working on the project. The decision was reportedly shared by Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, a vice president in charge of the effort. They told the employees the project would begin being phased out and that many of them would be shifted to the company's artificial intelligence division.

Apple and CEO Tim Cook never acknowledged the car project publicly, instead referring to it as work on "autonomous systems." That made it a source of intense speculation in the automotive and tech industries.

Since Apple started devoting resources to the concept in 2014, the plans to build an electric semi-autonomous vehicle have repeatedly shifted and attempts to bring a product to market have faced numerous setbacks. Apple axed dozens of employees connected to the project in a 2016 restructuring. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported the tech company's estimated release date for the car had been delayed until at least 2028.

EV giant Tesla's chief executive, Elon Musk, responded to Apple's decision to abandon the project by posting emojis of a salute and a cigarette on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Top Apple exec leaving company after vulgar remark on TikTok video

A top Apple executive is leaving the company after he was caught on camera joking how he "fondles big breasted women" for a living.
Tony Blevins, Apple's vice-president of procurement, blurted out the off-color comments after he was approached by TikTok and Instagram creator Daniel Mac, who is known for asking people in fancy cars what they do for a living.

"I have rich cars, play golf and fondle big breasted women," Blevins said in the viral video as he exited his Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. "But I take weekends and holidays off."
The clip was reportedly taken at a California car show on Aug. 18 and shared on social media in early September, where it has racked up more than 40,000 likes on Instagram and close to 142,000 likes on TikTok.
Apple's leadership caught wind of the remarks and an internal investigation was opened as Blevins was pulled from command of his team of hundreds of employees, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
An Apple spokesperson confirmed to the business news outlet Thursday Blevins was on his way out.
Blevins apologized for the raunchy remarks in a statement to Bloomberg.
"I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by my mistaken attempt at humor," he said.
Blevins was with the company for 22 years and one of about 30 execs to report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook or COO Jeff Williams, Bloomberg reported.

Apple Wants Future iPhones to Read Your Face to Decide if You Are Depressed

Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on new technology that aims to help diagnose depression and cognitive decline in its users through facial recognition and other sensors built into its future devices.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is developing new technology that would use an array of sensor data including mobility, physical activity, sleep patterns, typing behavior, facial expressions, and more to diagnose depression and cognitive decline in users.

The new tech project comes as a result of the research partnerships that Apple announced with UCLA, which is currently studying anxiety, depression, and stress. The company's partnership with Biogen also plays a part in the new initiative as the company is studying mild cognitive impairment.

The code name for Apple's UCLA project is reportedly "Seabreeze" while the Biogen project is called "Pi," according to individuals with knowledge of the matter. Biogen began its study on Monday but few details about Apple's studies have been reported. Biogen received approval from the FDA for a new drug designed to treat mild cognitive impairment.

Top Apple executives are reportedly passionate about the project. Apple COO Jeff Williams, who oversees the company's health unit, has reportedly spoken excitedly to employees about the tech giant's potential to address depression and anxiety, and other brain disorders.

However, many have worried that Apple is taking far too many liberties with its users' data in recent months. Apple appears to be overreaching in relation to user privacy in a number of ways, most notably was the company's recent plans to scan users iOS devices claiming that they were searching for child sexual abuse material.

Apple claimed that the way it detects child sex abuse material (CSAM) is "designed with user privacy in mind," and it is not directly accessing iCloud users' photos, but rather utilizing a device-local, hash-based lookup and matching system to cross-reference the hashes of user photos with the hashes of known CSAM. If there is a match between a user's photos and the CSAM database, Apple manually reviews the issue and will then disable the user's account before sending a report to NCMEC.

However, many privacy experts were quick to express fears about the new system. NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden tweeted about the issue stating: "No matter how well-intentioned, @Apple is rolling out mass surveillance to the entire world with this. Make no mistake: if they can scan for kiddie porn today, they can scan for anything tomorrow."

50,000 alleged sex-abuse victims expected to sue the Boy Scouts

As many as 50,000 alleged sex-abuse victims are expected to go after the Boy Scouts of America in court ahead of a November legal deadline, as a shocking new study concludes scouting just isn't safe for kids.

Since the Boys Scouts of America's February bankruptcy filing, about 35,000 alleged victims across the nation have filed claims, with "thousands" more emerging each week ahead of the Nov. 16 deadline.

"People are just coming forward in droves," said lawyer Andrew Van Arsdale, whose AVA Law firm has joined with two other firms to create the coalition Abused in Scouting.

The sheer number of Boy Scout victims so far has dwarfed similar cases, noted lawyer Jason Amala of the firm Pfau, Cochran, Vertetis, Amala.

"It's three to four times the claims filed in all the Catholic bankruptcies combined," Amala said.

Advocacy group Child USA used anonymous data from 1,576 Abused in Scouting plaintiffs to compile a chilling look at sex abuse in scouting.

The study, to be released next week, shows more than 70 percent of alleged victims were abused multiple times, with more than 50 percent of the incidents taking place at Scout camps and nearly 100 percent of victims suffering lifelong consequences, including alcohol and drug problems, post traumatic stress disorder, difficulties holding down jobs and intimacy issues.

Accused abusers threatened their victims more than half the time, while 45 percent groomed victims with gifts, and 63 percent gained the trust of victims' families, the study found.

"Scouts is mistaken in their belief that teaching a child to build a fire or earn a badge is equivalent to situational strength," the researchers wrote, noting that allowing kids to go with strangers into the woods without parents, safe places or law enforcement "creates repeated instances in which children are susceptible to abuse."

The Boy Scouts model is "doomed to fail" in terms of protecting children, Child USA founder Marci Hamilton told The Post.

"It's highly problematic," she said, adding, "It's so important that parents have the facts, and if they have the facts they'll do the right thing."

Child USA social scientist and researcher Carter Timon said, "Most people do not know that claims of sexual abuse are rarely, rarely false."

In scouting, the overwhelming majority of abuse perpetrators - 82 percent - are adults, with just 3.8 percent being youths themselves, said Timon, who added that typically one-third of child sex abusers are kids.

Calling the finding "surprising," Timon noted, "there's something going on in this setting that makes it way more likely for adults to abuse a child than is typical."

Victims, on average, were abused around the age of 12, and took nearly 30 years to come forward - including one former Scout who first revealed his abuse when he was 94, Timon said.

"These people are suffering, most of them for their whole lives," he said.

It's a story Jeff Williams, 49, can relate to. He was just 9 when he was abused for two years by an assistant scout leader in his native Ohio. Now a married father of two who has filed against the Boy Scouts in bankruptcy court, he urged others to come forward.

"There's safety in numbers. ... We all share a story," he said. "It's tremendous to know you're not floating out there alone."

The Boy Scouts says it is "committed to compensating victims through its restructuring," and said the study information was "unverified."

The group says it has banned one-on-one interactions between adults and scouts since 1987, and done criminal background checks since 1994.

According to its own research, 90 percent of Boy Scouts abuse claims occurred "more than 30 years ago," said the organization, which calls the safety of children its "most important priority."

The Boy Scouts also called for a federally overseen national database for all youth-serving organizations, to prevent abusers from going from one organization to another.

Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer, is leaving the company, Apple announced on Thursday.

Apple stock dropped 1% on the news in after-hours trading.

Ive is considered one of the most important people at Apple, responsible for the industrial design and the look and feel of all major Apple products, including the iPhone and the Mac. He had worked at Apple for more than 20 years.

He is going to start his own design business, called LoveFrom, along with longtime friend and fellow designer Marc Newson, according to a Financial Times report. Apple will be a client, Apple said.

"While I will not be an employee, I will still be very involved - I hope for many, many years to come. This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change," Ive told the Financial Times.

"Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival cannot be overstated, from 1998?s groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care," said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a statement.

Ive will not have an immediate successor. Instead, Evans Hankey, vice president of Industrial Design, and Alan Dye, vice president of Human Interface Design, will assume additional design responsibilities, Apple said. The two designers will report to Jeff Williams, Apple's chief operating officer. Ive reported directly to Cook.

In recent years, Ive has dedicated a large portion of his time to the construction of Apple Park, the company's $5 billion campus in Cupertino, California.

Last month, Apple officially opened its new headquarters with a concert on campus.

"There were some significant projects that I feel like I've completed. For example Apple Park - this was a project that started in 2004 . . . A couple of weeks ago we had our official opening of the Park. That was a really significant project, that was unlike many of our others, because it was for us," Ive told the Financial Times.

The leader of the iPhone giant made over $15 million in 2018, according to a new filing with the SEC.

That includes a base salary of $3 million, $12 million in bonus incentives for hitting performance goals related to sales and operating income, and $294,082 to pay for Cook's private jet fare.

That's not including the massive stock incentives that Apple also provides to its chief executive as part of a 2011 grant. Cook cashed in $121 million of stock that vested earlier this year. Cook still has over 1.5 million Apple shares that haven't vested, worth about $189 million at the current share price.

Apple also revealed on Tuesday how much money its median employee makes: $55,426. That means that of Apple's 132,000 total employees, half make less than that, and half make more. Lots of Apple employees work in its retail stores and with AppleCare and they factor into the median employee compensation.

For example, Facebook's median employee makes significantly more: Over $240,000 per year. But Facebook doesn't have retail or call center workers.

Cook's compensation, not counting his restricted stock, is 283 times what the median Apple employee makes, according to the filing. Other Apple executives were also well-paid last year. CFO Luca Maestri, general counsel Kate Adams, retail head Angela Ahrendts, and COO Jeff Williams all made over $26 million each, according to the SEC filing.

"We believe the compensation paid to our named executive officers for 2018 appropriately reflects and rewards their contribution to our performance," Apple states in the filing.

Cook said in 2015 that he plans to give his entire fortune to charity. In 2018, he donated nearly $5 million in Apple stock to an unspecified charity, according to an SEC filing.
