Ship seized in $1.3 billion cocaine bust is owned by JP Morgan Chase

A cargo ship that was seized last month with nearly 20 tons of cocaine on board - with an estimated street value of $1.3 billion - belongs to JP Morgan Chase, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to CBS News. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said this was the largest vessel ever seized in the agency's 230-year history.

The ship, the MSC Gayane, is owned by JP Morgan Asset Management clients through a transportation fund managed by the bank, a source said. JP Morgan leased the ship to Mediterranean Shipping Co., a Switzerland-based shipping company, which is solely responsible for the vessel's crews and operations.

Summary

A boy is found dead hiding in a bus that started from Manhattan and a second, older boy is caught trying to escape. The two boys are from Central America and they were in the custody of Bret Jansen, a member of a Wall Street law firm who is found slaughtered in his bed. Questioning of the surviving boy and discovery of a videotape of Jansen and another male molesting similar boysleads to a ring of wealthy pedophiles using a travel agency to smuggle in boys.

Plot

The detectives raid the Lynch home, where they find Lynch in his study. Lynch protests but the detectives discover him watching an incriminating video of him with a child.

Lynch is brought in and after he and his lawyer converse, he denies being the killer of Jansen but gives up the names of his pedophile colleagues as a deal. Members are brought in the precinct but none have the tattoo that the other man in the video with Jansen had. Soon detectives realize it must be Walt Massey, ashe has skill in the medical field and acts as the personal dentist to the children.

They talk with his wife who reveals Massey is close with her sons from her previous marriage. They ask which one is he particularly close with and she says Shawn, the oldest son. After she realizes the reason for the questions, she is horrified by the truth.

In interrogation, Shawn breaks down while revealing that Massey has molested him and he was afraid because his family might go back to the shelter. This brings his mother to tears and she comforts him.

Afterwards, Massey is brought in and shares looks with his family who are horrified by him. Massey then speaks with Stabler, who tricks Massey into revealing his pedophile nature by making up a case. Stabler then notices that Massey has the same tattoo on his arm, as the man in the tape with Jansen and says he is under arrest for rape of the boys and the murder of Jansen. Gradually breaking down, Massey confessed to killing Jansen, who had sexually abused his adoptive sons. He believed that his sexual relationship with Shawn was consensual and that the boy seduced him, and that he was better than Jansen because he loved his victims, while Jansen thought of his as sexual objects. However, Stabler states that while Massey tried to prove himself better, that he is in fact worse than Jansen because he took advantage of the love that his family gave him and betrayed them while deeming him a despicable human.

Jason Silverstein, a lecturer and writer-in-residence in the Global Health and Social Medicine department at Harvard Medical School, has been bringing his expertise to Harvard Extension School students for five years. He's taught courses on the AIDS epidemic, the opioid crisis, and the coronavirus pandemic.

In this faculty insight (adapted from a Career & Academic Resource Center podcast episode), Silverstein discusses his courses and his experience working with Harvard Extension students in the Faculty Aide Program.

Silverstein is the co-director of the Master of Science in Media, Medicine, and Health Program at Harvard Medical School. He is also the associate director of the Media and Medicine Certificate Program at Harvard Medical School.

In addition to teaching, Silverstein is a regular contributor to Men's Health, writing about health and all things coronavirus. He has also written for VICE, GQ, The Atlantic, The New Republic, The New York Times, The Guardian, Slate, Playboy, and The Nation.

Harvard Extension: Jason, can you share a bit about yourself and the courses you've taught at Harvard Extension School?

Silverstein: Absolutely. I've had a chance to offer classes through the Extension School and Harvard Summer School since the spring of 2017. I've been able to teach classes on everything from AIDS, to earthquakes, to the opioid epidemic.

I've also taught a class on death and dying, called Dying Well, which has meant so much to me and came out of my dissertation research on pediatric palliative care at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Recently, we've been offering a pretty innovative course on the coronavirus pandemic, which has been an incubator for students' own interventions.

- QAnon followers are spreading a false and dangerous conspiracy theory about a drug called adrenochrome.
- The theory suggests that liberal politicians and Hollywood "elites" are harvesting the blood of children to extract the drug for its psychedelic and life-extending benefits.
- While completely untrue, the theory is widespread, and QAnon followers now count themselves among members of Congress.
Supporters of the far-right wing group QAnon are spreading a dangerous conspiracy theory that the blood of kidnapped children is being harvested by liberal elites for a drug called adrenochrome, which they say offers a psychedelic experience and even holds the promise of immortality for those who take it.

While that may sound patently ridiculous, the adrenochrome conspiracy theory has now made its way beyond the bloodshot eyes of YouTube investigators and into mainstream culture, such as when Dr. Phil featured a woman on his show who claimed that her missing daughter had been kidnapped and tortured for the chemical.

And if you're wondering why it is important to pay attention to this sort of thing, well, let's start with the fact that more than two dozen congressional candidates have shared QAnon material or even appeared on QAnon shows. Like it or not, there are signs the group's influence is growing.
Let's explain what adrenochrome is, what QAnon wants you to believe it is, but is definitely not, and what's the harm in believing in such misinformation.

Hundreds of millions of Facebook user records were exposed on Amazon cloud server

More than 540 million records about Facebook users were publicly exposed on Amazon's cloud computing service, according to a cybersecurity research firm. A report out Wednesday by UpGuard said two third-party Facebook app developers posted the records in plain sight, causing yet another major data breach for the world's biggest social network.

According to UpGuard, a Mexico-based media company called Cultura Colectiva was responsible for the biggest leak. It exposed 146 gigabytes of Facebook user data, including account names, IDs and details about comments and reactions to posts. It's unclear how many individual users had data exposed.

Separately, an app called At the Pool exposed databases that appeared to include data about user IDs, friends, photos and location check ins, as well as unprotected Facebook passwords for 22,000 users. The app - which was meant to help people meet up for offline activities - shut down in 2014.

Don't bet on seeing a Harriet Tubman $20 bill anytime soon. The redesigned bill bearing Tubman's face, which was supposed to debut next year, will not be coming out for nearly a decade, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said.
Planning started years ago to have Tubman replace former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. Don't bet on seeing a Harriet Tubman $20 bill anytime soon. The redesigned bill bearing Tubman's face, which was supposed to debut next year, will not be coming out for nearly a decade, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said.
Planning started years ago to have Tubman replace former President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.
