Local #TeslaTakedown reveals 'grassroots' protests are AstroTurf

Shouts rang out last Saturday at the Tesla dealership on Tyco Road in Tysons, as they have across the country since late February when fiery #TeslaTakedown protests started targeting Tesla founder Elon Musk for his work in the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

"Recall Elon!"

"People over profits!"

A man shouted into a bullhorn: "Tell me what democracy looks like."

The crowd responded, "This is what democracy looks like."

But as the man juggled an anti-Elon sign, his bullhorn and a script with pre-written chants, the Tyco Road protest, its organizers, and its participants revealed a broader story about the #TeslaTakedown events popping up nationwide: the AstroTurf nature of the multimillion-dollar professional protest industry, with the footprints of two behemoth enterprises, a $12.6 million political nonprofit, the Indivisible Project, and the Democratic Party. While local chapters of the Democratic Party have put their names to only a small percentage of the protests, their direct involvement is important because it underscores the partisan motivation behind some of the protests.

While the local #TeslaTakedown protest may appear spontaneous and community-driven, it is the product of a well-funded, tightly coordinated campaign led by national political organizations like the Indivisible Project, MoveOn.org, and professional protest firms. These groups use digital platforms, pre-scripted chants, pre-printed signs, and nationwide toolkits to manufacture the appearance of grassroots activism, and the messages on Tyco Road mirror the language of protests nationwide. This kind of organizing is known as "AstroTurfing"-a term used to describe top-down efforts that mimic authentic, bottom-up civic engagement.

Critics say these operations mislead the public, distort the media narrative, and erode trust in genuine democratic movements by masking partisan objectives behind a veneer of local outrage.

Coordinated Professional Protest Network

Earlier this month, MSNBC host Chris Hayes touted the "organic, bottom-up movement." But details from the Tyco Road protest underscore that the "movement" was a staged partisan political action campaign led by Democratic Party political operatives, multimillion-dollar organizations enjoying 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit status, and professional protest companies that specialize in "direct action."

The Fairfax County Times and the Pearl Project, a nonprofit journalism initiative, created a chronology of the protest actions, building a public database of anti-Tesla protests published online on ActionAlert.com and Mobilize.us, which support the Democratic Party. According to internet records, someone anonymously purchased TeslaTakedown.com on Feb. 12. As of March 25 at 11 a.m., the database currently includes 304 published events and will be regularly updated.

According to the data:

Groups and individuals allied with the Democratic Party have organized 100% of the protests.

Only about 15 organizations and their affiliates are behind all of the protests.

Groups involved in the #TeslaTakedown protests have combined revenues of at least $43.1 million.

Troublemakers, a Seattle-based professional protest organization, and the Disruption Project, a Philadelphia group that describes itself as "dedicated to supporting uprisings, resistance, and mass direct action," have sponsored about 70%, or 220, of the protests.

The Indivisible Project has organized at least about 29%, or 87, of the protests.

Local Democratic Party chapters have organized some protests, including members' participation in the Fairfax County protest.

Other Democratic organizations have sponsored protests, including the AFL-CIO, MoveOn.org, Swing Left, Third Act Initiative Inc., the Democratic Socialists of America, the Fight Oligarchy Club, 50501, and Tax Reformers LLC, which organize under the platform TaxElon.us.

Third Act Initiative Inc., a Madison Avenue political nonprofit based in New York City, promoted the Tyco Road protest through its local "Rocking Chair Rebellion" chapter. It organized people aged 60 and over and promoted the protest with a call to action that said, "Hurting Tesla is stopping Musk." For most people, the sight of senior citizens and retirees protesting seems organic and grassroots but the reality is they are part of a highly-funded and lucrative political operation. According to its 2023 tax filing, Third Act Inititative Inc. has revenues of $2 million.

At the Tyco Road protest, the local connection to the Indivisible Protect became apparent a few minutes into the protest with the arrival of Marianne Burke, a local Democratic activist and leader of "Fairfax Indivisible." Juggling a large American flag on a pole with a smaller blue-and-yellow flag of Ukraine, Burke recently promoted an anti-Trump protest organized by the Indivisible Project and MoveOn.org, writing: "Meet at the Treasury building at 5pm."

Soon after Burke unfurled her flags, her friend, Vanessa Hall, another local Democratic activist who has fundraised donations for the Fairfax Democrats, arrived. Burke and Hall co-founded a 501(c)(4) political nonprofit, "4 Public Education," to support the all-Democratic Fairfax County school board.

Burke and Hall refused to comment. In fact, on the sidewalk by a sign for Papa John's, Hall slapped the camera phone of a Fairfax County Times reporter to block filming.

Within minutes, two anti-Musk protestors rushed over, one of them calling the Fairfax County Times reporter a "piece of s**t" and "pathetic," before saying about the reporter, "I don't even know where the hell she's from, where she was born," as the other man, wearing a blue "Dump Trump" baseball cap, told the reporter, "You're an idiot."

Indeed, in its 2023 IRS tax filing, Indivisible Project's mission is to "cultivate and lift up a grassroots movement of local groups to defeat the Trump agenda." Led by married cofounders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg, both living in the D.C. area, Indivisible Project boasted revenues of $12.6 million, with $8.6 million spent on salaries.

Levin bragged that Indivisible Project used "activists who hold the organizing and mobilization savvy to execute inside-outside strategies that help achieve our goals." Levin added, "The organization seized key moments to shape the public discourse around MAGA extremism," providing "direct funding" to "help local groups organize in-person events."

Officials at the Indivisible Project and other organizations involved in the protests didn't return requests for comment.

Partisan Financial Machine Behind #TeslaTakedown

The influence of Indivisible and the Democratic Party is evident in protests nationwide, but the details of the protests don't immediately reveal the organizers.

In Ann Arbor, Mich., "Wendy for Good Government" is the organizer for protests against Musk at the Tesla dealership on Jackson Road, but a closer look reveals the true organizers. A local Sun Times News article from a Feb. 27 protest names the organizer, "Ann Arbor Indivisible."

On March 3, New York Indivisible promoted a noisy video from a "TESLA TAKEDOWN" protest at the Tesla dealership in Manhattan, noting eight members of "Rise and Resist" were arrested at their "peaceful protest." One of the women arrested wore a shirt that read, "ABOLISH CAPITALISM."

On its Facebook page, Indivisible Virginia promoted a #TeslaTakedown protest at the Tesla dealership on N. Military Highway in Norfolk. It offered "Some ideas for signs," including smears against Musk and Tesla. "BOYCOTT SWASTI-KARS!" "SEND ELON TO MARS - NOW!" "NO MUSK RATS!" "HONK IF YOU HATE NAZIS!"

In Fairfax County, protestors held signs with messages from the same script, one showing Trump and Musk kissing with the message, "Putin's Puppets. Fire Musk-Rat." Another read, "Don't buy Nazi cars." Yet another delivered the space theme: "Deport Musk to Mars!" Another with the theme of cueing up drivers to express their support: "Honk if you hate fascism."

According to internet records, on March 8, one of these protest organizations bought BetterThanATesla.com to promote the message of "don't buy" Tesla cars.

Indivisible Virginia shared an article from the Patch media platform, which quoted Christopher Ambrose "of Fairfax County," saying he was demonstrating for the second time in three weeks on March 15 against the "unlawful takeover" of the government. It didn't mention that Ambrose is a "long-time Fairfax Democratic activist," as BlueVirginia, a media platform promoting the Virginia Democratic Party, describes him. Ambrose is a former vice-chair of finance with the Fairfax County Democratic Committee and a former member of the Democratic Party of Virginia Central Committee.

In Pennsylvania, a March 21 protest in Mechanicsburg was described by local media as a gathering of "concerned citizens," with activist Susan Roller quoted as representing "PA's 10th District Network." But, as with so many of these demonstrations, the organizing group is simply a local Indivisible chapter of the larger Indivisible operation.

On March 22, as protestors gathered in Tysons, the Connecticut Post wrote that the Tesla dealership on Boston Post Road in Milford, Conn., had become an "organic target for protest," but the organizers were actually Indivisible Amity, a chapter of the national organization outside New Haven, Conn. They followed the recommended script for other Indivisible protests, with the same protest sign, "DOGE is a criminal enterprise," that popped up at the Tyco Road protest in Tysons.

Indivisible has set its sights on the next big protest day: March 29. Troublemakers, the Seattle company behind a bulk of protests, sent an email to subscribers this week, touting a "goal of 500 global protests on the same day," March 29, "teaming up again" with Indivisible and "Seattle DSA," the acronym for Democratic Socialists of America.

In addition, its leaders have organized April 5 "Hands Off!" "National Day of Action" protests. Indivisible uploaded a "Hands Off! Mobilization from Indivisible Digital Asset Management," with premade graphics, templates, "Flyers, Rally Signs, & Printed Materials," and a Google Doc "Toolkit for Hosts." In a mailing this week, Indivisible's Levin told supporters the protests now number "more than 600 local events planned." The mega-Democratic group, MoveOn.org, plans a "Hands Off: De-escalation Training" on April 2.

Protests are also planned again on Tyco Road in Tysons. During the protest this past Saturday, a steady stream of prospective buyers walked through the doors of the Tesla dealership, one man shouting at the protestors, "I'm buying two Teslas today because of you!"

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -Two anti-Tesla protests were held in San Antonio as part of what organizers called a "Global Day of Action." The plan called for demonstrations at 200 Tesla dealershipsworldwide on Saturday. Despite being the second largest city in the Lone Star State with a population of nearly 1.5 million residents, less than a dozen protesters showed up at each of the two scheduled Tesla protests in the Alamo City.

Breitbart Texas observed each anti-Elon Musk demonstration, which began before noon at one dealership closer to the heart of the city and another held two hours later at a Tesla dealership several miles away.Neither protest garnered more than a dozen attendees who waved signs critical of Tesla, CEO Elon Musk, and President Donald Trump.

Many of the signs carried contained Nazi symbols, including the swastika, which is a symbol carved into Tesla autos during recent acts of vandalism against Tesla owners. The symbol has also been painted at several Tesla dealerships across the country.

Although the organizers of the rally indicate they do not promote the ongoing vandalism against the electronic vehicle automaker or vehicle owners, the increase in violent acts against both has drawn the ire of the Trump administration.

Just one week ago, Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi likened the acts of violence that have occurred at Tesla facilities - including the placement of incendiary devices at a dealership in Austin and acts of arson at other Tesla facilities - as being akin to acts of terrorism. In a statement addressing the acts against the automaker, Bondi promised to impose severe criminal consequences on those involved, saying, "The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism."

The protests are not loosely organized activities that occur organically. The protests appear to be sponsored and supported by several well-organized activist groups, including "Troublemakers," a Seattle, Washington-based liberal action organization, and the "Disruption Project." The anti-Tesla protests appear to be coordinated, scheduled, and posted on several online platforms, including the Action Network. The postings include instructions to protesters, offer geophysical data and mapping, and offer to assist demonstrators in locating protests across the country.

Many, including the automaker's CEO Elon Musk, believe the funding necessary to hold the protests comes from several organizations funded by ActBlue. a non-profit political action committee and fundraising platform associated with the Democratic Party. In an early March posting on Musk's X platform, the CEO wrote, "An investigation has found 5 ActBlue-funded groups responsible for Tesla "protests": Troublemakers, Disruption Project, Rise and Resist, Indivisible Project, and Democratic Socialists of America. ActBlue funders include George Soros, Reid Hoffman, Herbert Sandler, Patricia Bauman, and Leah Hunt-Hendrix."

The lack of significant attendance at the two protests in San Antonio, less than 100 miles from the automaker's headquarters in Austin, is a sign for some that the movement is losing steam. Breitbart Texas spoke to several customers at the dealership on the north side of San Antonio who seemedunphased by the poorly attended protest.

Bryan, a customer who did not want his last name revealed, saidmost residents of the Alamo city have better things to do than wave signs in the Texas heat.

"Most of these people here represent the liberal minority. If you look, many are old enough to have been around before cars were invented.Their boycott of Tesla is meaningless and has no impact on whether I buy one today or not," he emphasized. One customer left the lot to address the protesters, accusing them of not understanding the issues at hand.

The female customer shouted, "Musk is cutting waste, that's all. Why are you here!"

The founders of Indivisible plan to deploy their rent-a-protester network to generate a lot of noise-artificial noise-to sway public opinion and poll numbers. It's the same unoriginal Democratic Party playbook used during the BLM riots, and one that closely mirrors tactics seen in color revolution operations historically orchestrated by U.S. intelligence agencies abroad to overthrow foreign governments. The good news this time is that taxpayer funding should be limited with USAID, which DOGE and Trump nuked.

Here are the five radical leftist groups protesting Elon Musk - one of which received $7.6M from George Soros

George Soros gave $7.6 million to one of five groups accused of targeting Elon Musk's Tesla company, The Post has learned.

Tesla cars, Cybertrucks, dealerships and charging stations have been set on fire, shot at and sprayed with graffiti across the nation in acts of politically charged vandalism since Musk's new Department of Government Efficiency started making government cuts.

While the motives behind individual attacks vary, Musk has identified certain groups who organized protests against him and his company.

"An investigation has found 5 ActBlue-funded groups responsible for Tesla 'protests': Troublemakers, Disruption Project, Rise & Resist, Indivisible Project and Democratic Socialists of America," he said in a recent X post.

"We do not direct, coordinate, or dictate the strategies or activities of the organizations we support," said a statement from the Open Society Foundations. "The Open Society Foundations support a broad range of nonprofit organizations that work to strengthen democracy and promote nonviolent civic engagement. Our grantees operate independently and are expected to do so in full adherence to U.S. law."

ActBlue is a Democratic Party-affiliated fundraising platform, currently under fire for raising funds for anti-Israel terrorists.

Here's how each of those groups have been involved in protesting against Tesla:
Indivisible Project

Indivisible Project, a Washington-based non-profit, has been almost entirely financed by Soros's Open Society. It is coordinating a cross-country protest against Musk, empowering "grassroots" affiliates to "stop the Trump-Musk coup," according to its website.

The group took in more than $7.6 million from Open Society between 2017 and 2023. It was originally set up in 2016 to protest the election of Donald Trump.

Indivisible Action, a related Political Action Committee, has raised more than $9 million, public records show.

Billionaire philanthropist George Soros has financed numerous progressive groups, including Indivisible, a Washington DC-based non-profit that coordinates protests across the country. AP

Indivisible Action's anti-Musk activities include posting a toolkit on its website for a "Musk or US March Recess" demonstration planned for next week during the government's spring break.

The toolkit includes graphics for signs reading: "GTFO Musk" and "Fire Elon Musk."

In addition to Soros, the group has received $2 million from the Sandler Foundation, which funds groups such as the progressive news platform ProPublica.

Herbert Sandler, a New York-born banker, set up the foundation with his wife Marion in 1991, and has given out more than $1.2 billion in grants to progressive nonprofits, according to its website.

After Sandler's death in 2019, the married Congressional staffers who set up Indivisible Project thanked him for his support.

"For the last two years, we've counted ourselves as deeply fortunate to know Herb, and to benefit from his advice and guidance," said Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg in a 2019 press release.

"He was always thinking about the next stage for Indivisible, asking hard questions that pushed us forward. We will miss him deeply."

Democratic Socialists of America

Indivisible Project is also allied with Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which backed the campaigns of progressive Democrats such as New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

DSA claims on its website it is the largest socialist organization in the United States, with over 92,000 members and chapters in all 50 states.

Green New Deal, Healthcare for Illegals: Soros-Funded Groups Push Dems to Use Virus to Achieve Progressive Wish List

A coalition of progressive groups, many funded by billionaire George Soros, is sponsoring a "People's Bailout" community organizing outfit nudging Congress to use the next stimulus package during the coronavirus crisis to enact reforms that would fundamentally transform American society by achieving longtime progressive aims.

In the spirit of the repurposed progressive anthem of never letting a crisis go to waste, the suddenly created People's Bailout group is demanding that the next stimulus package adhere to "five principles" the group says are endorsed by "nearly 1,000 organizations, unions, and community leaders, and nearly 100 members of Congress."

Those "principals" encompass such far-left wish list items as government healthcare for illegal immigrants, required $15 per hour minimum wage, enhanced union collective bargaining and government regulation of the board of directors of private companies to ensure "worker representation."

Also within the "five principles" list are "direct sizable cash payments to every person" and the use of stimulus legislation to push what would amount to a massive "green" new deal.

The "green" section calls for public funds to (below are direct quotes):

expand wind and solar power
build clean and affordable public transit
weatherize our buildings
manufacture more clean energy goods
expand public services that support climate resilience,
[reduce] climate emissions and toxic pollution.

Using progressive key words, the group exclaims that a "people's bailout should be rooted in justice" and "we demand the bailout provide a just recovery."

The group is pushing the #PeoplesBailout hashtag and has gone so far as to provide activists with wording to use in social media posts directed at lawmakers. The group's website also provides exact scripting for people to read when calling their lawmakers to demand the "five principles" be incorporated in stimulus legislation.

The People's Bailout held an online May Day rally and now wants activists to get further involved by displaying banners and forming car caravans.

The website promotes a "helpful slideshow and handout on key tactics to use" to push promote the transformative agenda.

The "helpful slideshow" and "tactics" linked on the site are from the Ruckus Society, which specializes in the disruption tactic of so-called direct action.

Ruckus provided training and resources to the Occupy movement. It's been funded by the Soros-financed Tides Foundation.

Ruckus leaders infamously helped to spark the 1999 World Trade Organization protests in Seattle that turned violent.

The Occupy-Ruckus link is instructive. Besides Ruckus, Occupy was also backed by groups like MoveOn.org and the Working Families Party.

The Soros-funded MoveOn.org and the Working Families Party are two of 13 listed "sponsors" of the People's Bailout group.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, one People's Bailout sponsor is the Sunrise Movement which helped craft the socialist utopian Green New Deal blueprint introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Sunrise was in part inspired by the activism of Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter and the radical immigration group United We Dream.

Another sponsor is the Indivisible Project, which has partnered with Organizing for Action, the activist group that morphed from Barack Obama's first presidential campaign. Breitbart News extensively reported that Indivisible leaders are openly associated with groups financed by Soros.

George Soros's advocacy group, the second-highest-spending lobby group in the country, has halted its advocacy operations after its lobbyists departed earlier this year.

The Open Society Policy Center (OSPC), a D.C.-based lobbying shop in the liberal billionaire's vast network, deployed two in-house staffers to influence Capitol Hill lawmakers on legislation. The policy center, however, recently filed a termination report to the U.S. House of Representatives Office of the Clerk that became effective on March 31, as both lobbyists left the OSPC earlier in the year.

The two lobbyists were an integral part of Soros's political influence operation. Their departure means the nonprofit's advocacy efforts in the nation's capital will halt for the time being. OSPC was the second-largest lobbying spender in the nation in 2019, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Soros's lobbying shop has poured more than $100 million into advocacy efforts since President Donald Trump took office-$40 million more than it spent over the previous 14 years combined. In recent years, it has spent more than Amazon, Facebook, Boeing, and Alphabet, Google's parent company. Only the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spent more than the OSPC on lobbying last year. Much of the OSPC's spending was for grants to other liberal organizations for their advocacy efforts rather than its own lobbying.

Jonathan Kaplan, a spokesman for the OSPC, said the two staff members, who had to register under the Lobbying Disclosure Act-which requires the disclosure of activities to influence the federal government-departed the group before the end of the quarter. Federal guidance says to terminate registration once there are no registered lobbyists, so the group filed a termination report.

"We will continue abiding by the rules and register [as a lobbying group] if or when we trigger the requirements again," Kaplan told the Washington Free Beacon. He added that OSPC would provide a breakdown of its expenses, the "vast majority" of which are grants, online.

The two lobbyists departed for other jobs in D.C. Lora Lumpe, OSPC's former advocacy director, left the group to become the first CEO of the Soros- and Charles Koch-funded Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Staff and scholars at the foreign policy think tank have been dogged by charges of anti-Semitism and have echoed Chinese propaganda. Jacob Marx, OSPC's former senior policy specialist, is now a military legislative assistant in Rep. Katie Porter's (D., Calif.) D.C. office.

While Soros's group will have to put the brakes on its own Capitol Hill lobbying until it again meets the requirements for registration, two other D.C. lobbying outfits-NVG LLC and the Raben Group-list the OSPC as a client. The New York City-based Mirram Group also reports Soros's Open Society Foundation as a client.

The OSPC spent a record $48 million on advocacy last year. It lobbied in favor of making gun companies liable for crimes committed with firearms, against President Trump's judicial nominations, and on issues related to immigration enforcement. Groups that receive money from OSPC have pushed back against repealing Obamacare and Trump's tax cuts.

During the first quarter of 2020, the OSPC added $5 million to its lobbying total, its newest disclosures show. Its staffers lobbied Congress on the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2021 and issues related to national security powers.

The OSPC's website shows that during the third quarter of 2019, the group spent $3.9 million on Projects at the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a massive dark money network that funneled more than $600 million to liberal groups and initiatives in 2018 alone. It passed at least $1 million more to other activist organizations, including Community Change Action, Emgage Action, Indivisible Project, Tides Advocacy, and New Virginia Majority. Its fourth-quarter grants are not yet posted.

The OSPC will continue to hand out grants after the departure of its in-house lobbyists.

Schumer faces heavy pressure from left on Supreme Court

Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) is under pressure from the left to whip Democrats hard to oppose any Supreme Court nominee who might vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that established a woman's right to an abortion.

Liberal activist groups are urging their supporters to attend a town hall meeting with Schumer in Brooklyn on Monday night and press him to commit to squeeze red-state Democrats who might feel pressure to back Trump's pick.

"We expect his constituents to be asking him really directly if he is going to commit to whipping the caucus and keeping Democratic voters together and in line in opposing Trump's extreme Supreme Court nominee," said Elizabeth Beavers, associate policy director at Indivisible Project, a liberal advocacy group dedicated to defeating the Trump agenda and electing progressive leaders.
