Fourteen countries oppose UN resolution to end Israel's occupation of Palestine
A total of 124 states voted for Israel to withdraw forces and cease settlement activity in the occupied West Bank
Apart from the US, Argentina, Hungary and Paraguay also voted against the resolution. Other opposers were: Oceania's Palau, Micronesia, Nauru, Fiji, Tonga, Tuvalu and Papua New Guinea, East Africa's Malawi and Europe's Czechia.
Notably, South America's Argentina has had a long-standing pro-Palestine policy, which it broke off from in a May vote on recognising Palestinian as a state, before designating Hamas a terrorist group two months later.
Argentina's President Javier Milei had been aligning his country closer with Israel and the US in recent months, even visiting Jerusalem in February and making more public his religious views after converting to Judaism three years ago.
Hungary's position on Israel remained unchanged. It has long been a supporter and ally of Israel, and is the only EU member state to not have called on Israel to stop its incursion into Rafah in May, in the continuing war in Gaza, as part of a joint declaration among other EU member states.
More than 41,200 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's war in Gaza, and 95,550 were wounded with at least 10,000 more missing and believed to be under rubble.
Paraguay has strong trade ties with Israel but a complicated relationship with it.
In 2018, President Horacio Cartes said he would relocate his country's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem - effectively recognising the city as Israel's capital, following the footsteps of Donald Trump, who made the same controversial move.
Paraguay's decision was eventually reversed under new president Mario Abdo Benitez and the embassy was moved back to Tel Aviv, prompting anger from Israel, which closed its embassy in Paraguay.
Six years later, Paraguay's current President Santiago Pe?a expressed his support for Israel, saying he will move his embassy to Jerusalem and in turn attended the inauguration of Israel's embassy in the capital Asuncion on Wednesday - the day of the UN vote - where his envoy voted against the resolution to show further support to Israel.
Ahead of the vote, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said the kingdom condemns "the crimes of the Israeli occupation authority against the Palestinian people". The Crown Prince said the kingdom will not establish diplomatic ties with Israel without an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

The most dramatic moment in the opening week of the trial saw Burga accused of threatening Burzaco by making a slashing motion on his neck as the witness testified. Burga claimed he was scratching his throat but still had his bail conditions tightened. Burzaco earlier disclosed he became the target of death threats after it emerged he was cooperating with authorities.

SUICIDE
A former Argentine government official, Jorge Delhon, killed himself hours after the court was told he took millions in bribes in exchange for handing out television rights.
Jorge Delhon, a lawyer who worked in the administration of former Argentina President Cristina Fernandez, dealt with the now-defunct government program Futbol para Todos (Football for All), which broadcast local soccer matches on public TV. Burzaco implicated Delhon in taking bribes.

POLITICAL LINKS
The close ties in South America among lawmakers, judges and soccer leaders are becoming clearer.
In a series of WhatsApp messages detailed in court Wednesday, Napout revealed his links to the current state president of Paraguay, Horacio Cartes.
Napout passed on to Burzaco a request from Cartes' private office to buy eight tickets for Argentina's game against Iran at the 2014 World Cup. Around that time, Napout also noted CONMEBOL had been in a legal case with a businessman and that Cartes "resolved the entire trial and did it all because of me."
Cartes also advised Napout to "stay close" to Grondona of Argentina to fulfil his ambition to lead CONMEBOL, the WhatsApp messages revealed.
When Argentina reached the semifinals, Napout asked Burzaco to get four tickets for Paraguay's attorney general to buy. In a WhatsApp message, Napout tells Burzaco, "we have a trial over there. There are two judges mad because I refused" to get tickets.

CURRENT OFFICIALS
The desire by FIFA to characterize the trial as dealing with officials long banished from world soccer is made harder when officials currently influential in the game are mentioned in court.
FIFA's current finance committee chairman, Alejandro Dominguez, was referred to during the trial on Wednesday as "not a very successful businessman (who) will probably request" a bribe.
Burzaco, the prosecution's star witness, said he was told this about Dominguez by Napout in early 2015. Napout is a Paraguayan like Dominguez, and his predecessor as CONMEBOL leader.
Under current FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Dominguez is a key ally in Zurich as one of FIFA's eight vice presidents and was rewarded with being made chairman of the finance panel.
Among many soccer officials whose photographs Burzaco was asked by prosecutors to identify on Tuesday were Sunil Gulati, the most influential American at FIFA, and Nasser Al-Khelaifi, the Qatari who heads French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain and broadcaster beIN Sports. Al-Khelaifi is under criminal investigation in Switzerland for suspected bribery linked to FIFA awarding beIN broadcast rights to the 2026 and 2030 World Cups.
The U.S. has not accused Gulati or Al-Khelaifi of any offenses.

U.S. flags ex-president of Paraguay for graft, obstruction
The United States accused former Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes of "significant corruption" obstructing a transnational criminal investigation, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in the capital Asuncion on Friday.
"Former President Cartes obstructed a major international investigation into transnational crime in order to protect himself and his criminal associate from potential prosecution and political damage," the statement said without naming the associate.

The Cuban news service reports that George W. Bush has purchased 98,840 acres in Paraguay, near the Bolivian/Brazilian border.

The US will open its embassy in its current consulate in the capital's Arnona neighborhood on May 14. A large US delegation, headed by US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, is expected to attend the event.
Two days later, Guatemala will inaugurate its new embassy in Jerusalem's Malha Technological Park, in the presence of President Jimmy Morales.
Last month, Cartes said that he wanted to relocated the country's embassy to Jerusalem before the end of his presidential term in August.
At the time, Israeli diplomats told Channel 10 they were skeptical the outgoing president has the political support to advance an embassy move in under four months.
However, Hadashot news reported Monday that the country's incoming president, Mario Abdo Benítez - a member of Cartes's conservative Colorado party - will join the incumbent for the opening of the Jerusalem embassy.

Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes told attendees at a special event marking Israel's 70th anniversary that his country would relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Cartes said he hoped to perform the relocation before the end of his term in mid-August.
