Antisemitism watchdog group urges Meta to keep ban on the word 'shaheed'
Under the current policy, Meta removes "shaheed" when it is used to reference to people it believes are dangerous.
A prominent antisemitism watchdog pushed back on a recommendation by Meta Platform's oversight board to allow the term "shaheed" to be used on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook.
"The recommendation by Meta's Oversight Board could be seen as giving a green light for the glorification of murder," Combat Antisemitism Movement CEO Sacha Roytman said. "This term is used to honor those who murder, maim, and terrorize people around the world and allowing its usage sends entirely the wrong signal, that this word is used in acceptable and non-violent discourse, which it is not."
According to the Collins Dictionary, the term "shaheed" is another term for "martyr."
Meta has banned the use of the term prior to 2020. But in 2023, the oversight board announced that it would look into how it approached the term.
Under the current policy, Meta removes "shaheed" when it is used to refer to people it believes are dangerous.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a member of the Meta oversight board, said that the current policy is "overbroad and disproportionately restricts freedom of expression and civic discourse," USA Today reports.
The Combat Antisemitism Movement argues that Meta keep the policy in place, saying the term is "used to honor those who murder, maim, and terrorize people around the world and allowing its usage sends entirely the wrong signal, that this word is used in acceptable and non-violent discourse, which it is not."

Facebook Oversight Board Co-Chair Headlined Top Chinese Communist Party Influence Group's Conference.
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, a co-chair of Facebook's Oversight Board, headlined an event hosted by the "public face" of a top Chinese Communist Party influence group flagged by the U.S. government for its efforts to "co-opt and neutralize" opposition to the regime.
One of the board's four co-chairs, former Prime Minister of Denmark Helle Thorning-Schmidt, has ties to the Chinese Communist Party's United Front Work Department (UFWD).
The United Front functions as China's premier influence and propaganda organization, raising flags with the U.S. government's Economic and Security Review Commission. It seeks to "co-opt and neutralize sources of potential opposition to the policies and authority of its ruling Chinese Communist Party" and coerce American leaders "to take actions or adopt positions supportive of Beijing's preferred policies."
Overwhelmingly comprised of George Soros-linked, left-wing activists, the Facebook Oversight Board recently upheld the platform's decision to ban former President Donald Trump - a strong source of opposition to the Chinese Communist Party.
Schmidt headlined an event hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), which is led by the daughter of a former Chinese Communist Party paramount leader, regarded as the "public face" of the United Front, and functions as "avowedly an arm of the party-state." What's more, the U.S. State Department has described the group as seeking to "directly and malignly influence" U.S. state and local leaders.
Schmidt spoke at the group's 2017 event "Healthier Future for Children," a Beijing-based dialogue focusing on the efforts of the United Nations Every Woman Every Child China Partnership Network (EWECCPN)." Alongside Schmidt, CPAFFC Vice President Xie Yuan also spoke at the event.

China's State Propaganda Group Boasts Control Over Western Think Tanks, 'Election Integrity' Groups, And Even Joe Biden's National Security Team.
The Chinese Communist Party's Cyberspace Administration of China has boasted of one of the most critical connections between the 2020 U.S. Presidential election, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the groups and individuals campaigning to stop President Trump and his "America First" agenda, The National Pulse can exclusively reveal.
New, bombshell admissions over China's influence in both the United States and Europe link organizations such as the Berggruen Institute with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Berggruen Institute first rose to national attention after co-founding the "Transition Integrity Project" which advised on how Joe Biden could seize power on the back of an ostensible Trump victory.
The news lends further credibility to election-tampering theories especially concerning Chinese Communist Party influence.
A 2017 report effectively claims - on the CCP's behalf - that CNN host Fareed Zakaria, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Facebook Oversight Board member Helle Thorning-Schmidt, NeverTrump philanthropist Pierre Omidyar and many others "co-operate" with the CCP and its goals.
'Party Media'.
An unearthed media communique entitled "Holding High the Banner of Party Media and Fulfilling Its Duties and Missions" appears on the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) website.
The government entity reportedly engages in "online propaganda and public opinion work" and upholds a "Socialist core value view," while spearheading censorship of media and the internet in China. In other words, they pump out pro-CCP lines abroad, while cracking down on dissent within.
The release brags of the work of the Chinese Communist Party's Western-focused propaganda efforts via the state-owned China Daily newspaper and website. China Daily has purchased placement inside the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post - the latter of which also carries a Fareed Zakaria opinion column, weekly.
At the time of publication, Zakaria's latest column is entitled: "The Pentagon is using China as an excuse for huge new budgets," wherein the CNN host lauds China's "ambitious" Belt and Road Initiative and insists the U.S. need not worry about China's rise as a military power.

Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook Will 'Honor' Oversight Board's Decision on Donald Trump's Account
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during a hearing Thursday that he will "honor" the potential decision by the company's oversight board to reinstate former President Donald Trump's Facebook account. The Facebook "Supreme Court" is packed with anti-Trump and progressive individuals.
Rep. Billy Long (R-MO) asked Zuckerberg if he would respect the Facebook oversight board's decision to reinstate Trump's Facebook account if the group, nicknamed the "Facebook Supreme Court," were to rule in Trump's favor.
"You created the Facebook oversight board as a way to help hold Facebook accountable; they are currently looking at Facebook's decision to remove President Trump's Facebook account," Long asked. "If the oversight board decides that Facebook should have left President Trump's account up, what will you do?"
Zuckerberg said, "Congressman, we will respect the decision of the oversight board, and if they tell us that former President Trump's account should be reinstated, then we will honor that."
Long then asked how Zuckerberg will ensure that the oversight, which is comprised of people across the world, how they will make their decision with respect to America's tradition of free speech.
Zuckerberg responded, saying that the members were allegedly chosen due to their respect for free speech and to "balance" human rights and free expression.
Breitbart News' Allum Bokhari noted that the first 20 members of the Facebook "Supreme Court comprise of anti-Trump and progressive figures.
Bokhari wrote:
... members of the Oversight Board include Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark for the left-wing Social Democrat party, Afia Asantewaa Asare-Kyei, a "human rights expert" who is part of George Soros' "Open Society" network, Pamela Karlan, who worked in the civil rights division of President Obama's Justice Department, and Evelyn Aswad, who served as director of human rights in Hillary Clinton's State Department.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), one of Congress's most vocal critics of big tech, condemned the Facebook oversight board in May 2020.
"This is how powerful @Facebook is, how much speech it controls, how much of our time & attention it claims: it now has a special censorship committee to decide what speech can stay & what should go. Facebook basically making the case it should be broken up," he wrote.

TRUMP APPEALS SUSPENSION TO REJOIN FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM
Former President Donald Trump has submitted a statement of appeal to an oversight board funded by Facebook in a bid to rejoin the platform. The decision is expected to take around two and a half months.
Former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who is a co-chair of the oversight board, told UK's Channel 4 News that they are currently looking into the appeal concerning Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts. The board was set up to be an independent group to hear users' appeals and is comprised of 19 former politicians, journalists, and academics.
"It's a very high profile case but that is exactly why the Oversight Board was created in the first place," Thorning-Schmidt said.

Freedom of Speech on the Internet is all but Extinct: Facebook's New "Free Speech Court" Is Anything but Independent
Freedom of speech on the Internet is all but extinct
Days away from the most polarized electoral contest in American history, social media companies like Facebook have vowed to censor any voices which they and their partners in the federal government consider inconvenient. According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook is ready to implement election information strategies that have been in the works for years.
Company spokesman Andy Stone told the WSJ that the social media giant will be applying the "lessons" learned from previous elections in accordance with the designs of "hired experts" and vague references to "new teams," who are leveraging their "experience across different areas to prepare for various scenarios."
Mark Zuckerberg's de facto monopoly over online peer-to-peer communication tools has given Facebook an inordinate amount of influence over the political narratives at both national and regional levels, which it has shown a willingness exercise with topics like the Philippines and Palestine.
Last week, the company took a major step in solidifying its grip over the content purveyed on its platform with the official launch of the Facebook Oversight board. A body that is to function like a 'Supreme Court' for chat rooms, if you will, with the power to review any decisions regarding post removals or deplatforming and to make policy recommendations. Members have been drawn from "law experts... rights advocates" and journalists from around the world. The oversight board currently boasts 20 members.
Four members - two of which have extensive experience in the U.S. judicial system - serve as the board's co-chairs and were handpicked by Facebook, according to The Guardian. Other board members include former Danish prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, who is also a co-chair and is perhaps only remembered outside of Denmark for her selfie faux pas at Mandela's funeral in 2013 when she was photographed taking a group photo with Barack Obama and David Cameron during the commemoration.
Judges of little character
Thorning-Schmidt's insensitive moment at the laying-in-state of one of the most significant figures of the 20th century may be less damning to her presence on a social media oversight board than the tax-evasion scandal involving her husband - a British MP -, which ended up costing her re-election. When confronted over the accusations, she retorted that if her intention had really been to evade taxes, she would have done so "much more elegantly." Despite these questionable instances and her reputation as an "extravagant" woman with expensive tastes, Thorning-Schmidt remains among the least objectionable figures on the oversight board.

I disagree with former PM Helle Thorning Schmidt (now Facebook Board member) that government should limit regulation of social media. On the contrary - we need more regulation. Without proper regulation big global companies will be able to facilitate'hacking of opinions' and influence democratic outcome improperly.

Facebook 'Supreme Court' Member Warns that Regulation Could Stifle Free Speech Online
Helle Thorning-Schmidt, the co-chair of Facebook's "Supreme Court," has warned that an aggressive approach to regulating the company could infringe upon freedom of speech. Her comments stand in stark contrast to the company's purge of conservatives and plan to blacklist legal comment that might cause "regulatory impacts."
CNBC reports that in a recent interview the co-chair of Facebook's Oversight Board, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, warned that regulation of Facebook could infringe upon freedom of speech. Speaking to CNBC's Squawk Box Europe, Thorning-Schmidt stated: "If regulation gets too heavy, it actually will impact freedom of speech very heavily. I believe in regulation, I believe that politics has to play a role."
Thorning-Schmidt added: "I also think we have to be a little bit careful than just demanding regulation, because at some point it will just tip over and be a regulation on our freedom of speech, and I don't think any of us want that."
Thorning-Schmidt compared the regulation of Facebook to the recent shutdown of the internet that occurred last month in Belarus following the country's election results in which President Alexander Lukashenko declared yet another landslide victory. The election has been condemned by world leaders as illegitimate and the European Union has threatened sanctions on Belarusian officials for violence, repression, and election fraud.
Thorning-Schmidt was the prime minister of Denmark before she joined the Oversight Board and was the first woman to hold the post. The board was announced by Facebook in November 2018 and will supposedly have the power to overrule Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on whether to delete controversial posts. However, the board is not yet operational and in July stated that it would not be until late fall.
Other board members include Alan Rusbridger, former editor-in-chief of the Guardian, and Andras Sajo, a former judge and VP of the European Court of Human Rights.
"I do think it's obvious to most people that we can't carry on in a world where it's basically Facebook and ultimately Mark Zuckerberg who takes decisions on what content gets removed or stays up," said Thorning-Schmidt.
"It might not be ideal and it might be a small step, but it is a step in the right direction to finally have an independent board, an oversight board, that can take these decisions."
Zuckerberg and Facebook wield that exact level of power today. The platform refuses to allow pages in support of Kyle Rittenhouse, declaring his actions "mass murder" before he ever stepped into court to defend himself. On the other hand, the company was happy to host pages dedicated to terrorists and convicted murderers ranging from Charles Manson to Assata Shakur. These pages were only taken down when Breitbart News pointed out the hypocrisy.

Trudeau's buddy Gerry Butts wants Facebook to censor your climate change posts
Justin Trudeau's BFF and former advisor Gerald Butts, along with a group of 14 other non-scientists wrote a letter to the former Danish prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and the Facebook Oversight Board asking them to "take action" by kicking climate change unbelievers off of Facebook.
For context, the social democrat Thorning-Schmidt is one of the four people selecting Facebook's 40 person "free speech panel," which isn't actually about protecting free speech, but about deciding who gets it, and who doesn't.
Here is an excerpt from that letter:
Facebook is allowing the spread of climate misinformation to flourish, unchecked, across the globe. Instead of heeding the advice of independent scientists and approved fact-checkers from Climate Feedback, Facebook sided with fossil fuel lobbyists by allowing the CO2 Coalition to take advantage of a giant loophole for "opinion" content.
The loophole has allowed climate denial to fester by labeling it "opinion," and thus, avoiding the platform's fact-checking processes…
…We are asking you to lead the charge to fix this. Until Facebook takes a stand, climate denial groups such as the CO2 Coalition will continue to exploit your platform to sow discord and put our nation's health and security at dire risk.
The letter is signed, like I pointed out already, by 15 radical leftist anti-free speech busybodies, not a scientist amongst them!

Hungary's Conservative Govt Sounds Alarm on Facebook's New 'Soros Oversight Board
The Hungarian government is sounding the alarm over a powerful new oversight team for content shared on Facebook, denouncing it as the "Soros Oversight Board".
Hungarian premier Viktor Orbán is something of an archnemesis to George Soros, the 89-year-old pro-open borders plutocrat and convicted insider trader - frequently making a point of calling out his efforts to undermine the Hungarian government's strong pro-borders, anti-mass migration policies in a highly public manner.
Soros, in turn, has waged a sustained public relations and lawfare campaign against Orbán, alleging that the Hungarian leader has attempted to run the Central European University which he funds out of the country and attempting to overturn a "Stop Soros" package of legislation intended to make non-governmental "civil society" organisations (NGOs) be more transparent about their sources of foreign funding.
Soros does not only pick fights with Hungary's conservative leadership, however, also turning his influence and fortune against targets including U.S. President Donald Trump, Brexit, and, most recently, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg might seem a strange target for Soros, but the left-liberal explained his grievance against the tech tycoon in a January opinion-editorial for the New York Times - namely that he has been insufficiently vigorous in curbing the ability of President Trump and his supporters to use social media to get him re-elected.
"I repeat and reaffirm my accusation against Facebook under the leadership of Mr Zuckerberg and Ms [Sheryl] Sandberg," Soros railed.
"They follow only one guiding principle: maximize profits irrespective of the consequences. One way or another, they should not be left in control of Facebook."
Zuckerberg has now, at least in the Hungarian government's estimation, "caved to the wishes of the billionaire", establishing a high-powered appeals board which will "make final rulings on whether Facebook posts violate the platform's standards on nudity, hate speech and insensitivity", according to the Wall Street Journal.
An investigation into the people currently announced for the board, has led the Hungarian government to conclude that it is not some neutral expert body, but a "Soros Oversight Board" intended to placate the billionaire activist.
"Of the four co-chairs on this new board, only one could be called conservative," complained Zoltán Kovács, Hungary's Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy, in an official blog post.
"A bit of digging reveals many ties to Soros-funded organizations and mouthpieces," he continued.
Co-chairs the Hungarian raised issues with included Catalina Botero Marino, "a board member of the pro-abortion Center for Reproductive Rights, funded by Open Society Foundations" - Soros's flagship NGO - and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, who is "unequivocally and vocally anti-Trump" and serves alongside Soros and his son Alexander as trustee of another NGO.
Thorning-Schmidt is also the wife of anti-Brexit Labour MP Stephen Kinnock and the daughter-in-law of former Labour leader and European Commissioner Neil Kinnock.
"Lastly, among the board chairs, we have a Columbia University professor Jamal Greene. He served as an aide to Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) during Justice Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings," Kovács continued.
"These co-chairs apparently then hand-picked the other board members for Facebook's Oversight Board (how convenient!), who appear to range from left-liberal to far left-liberal," he wrote.
Some of those selected were said to include:
A program manager at the Open Society Initiative for West Africa
A judge at the European Court of Human Rights and founding dean of Legal Studies at Soros's Central European University
A former head of Article 19... generously funded by the Open Society Foundation
Kovács also highlighted Alan Rusbridger, a former editor of Britain's left-wing Guardian newspaper - disparaged by the Hungarian as a "Soros mouthpiece".
"How does this private citizen [Soros], a person who promotes an ideology far outside the mainstream, along with a group of his like-minded associates, paid employees and sympathizers move in to become regulators-in-chief for a platform catering to over 30 per cent of the world's population?" he demanded.

Facebook will rue its left-wing oversight board appointments
"In fact, picking Rusbridger could turn out to be a strategic error for Facebook which Zuckerberg and his team may live to regret....

The International Crisis Group (ICG; also simply known as the Crisis Group)
is a transnational non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 1995 that advertises itself as carrying out field research on violent conflict and says it advances policies to prevent, mitigate or resolve conflict. It advocates policies directly with governments, multilateral organisations and other political actors as well as the media.
The organization's actions and funding have been the subject of controversy.
Malley, the current ICG president, had his ties to the Obama electoral campaign severed in May 2008, when it became public that Malley had been in discussions with the militant Palestinian group Hamas, listed by the U.S. State Department as a terrorist organization.[15][16]
Crisis Group Board of Trustees is chaired by Mark Malloch Brown, Former UN Deputy Secretary-General and Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. A few names that might be worth looking into:
Jillian Burns, Save the Children, James Bausch, Charles McCormack, Helle Thorning Schmidt
Jillian Burns:
" According to an article written in March 2015 by a former Foreign Service officer, Jillian Burns,[1] the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs created the first formal overseas Iran Watcher position in 2002. Alan Eyre, who speaks Farsi fluently, was given this first slot within the United Arab Emirates and Burns herself later replaced him in 2005. In 2006, the State Department announced a broader Iran Watcher program. The goals of the program were to improve the U.S.'s understanding of the country and to develop a new cadre of Iran experts who could speak Farsi and prepare themselves should the U.S. re-establish formal diplomatic ties with Iran."

Subject: FW: Haiti - child trafficking
This is a good suggestion from Jillian Burns in S/P….to make sure that children (and wonen) don't become targets of traffickers, as happened in Pakistan.
…
An emergency response team from Westport's Save the Children successfully reached Haiti today and worked quickly with staff already on the ground to organize the distribution of tents, medicine, and toiletries to children and families in desperate need, the charity said. "Save the Children is extremely concerned about the well-being of children in Haiti at this critical moment and we are doing everything we can to quickly get relief supplies to those who need it most," said Charles MacCormack, president and CEO of Save the Children, in a news release. "Our staff on the ground is pulling out all the stops to overcome hurdles like blocked roads and unreliable access to the airport." "This is just the beginning of what will be a comprehensive five-year effort to build back better in Haiti. We are dedicated to not only addressing the immediate needs of children and families, but to making sure they have a brighter future ahead."
Source: wikileaks.org/clinton-emails/emailid/689
Save The Children Project (James Bausch/Charles McCormack):
"When pressed for more concrete details MacCormack's relaxed confidence wavered somewhat and then became completely shaken when I began to ask questions about Save the Children's financing, questions about the pie chart. It is the deception inherent in the pie chart that provides the key to unraveling the con game that is Save the Children.
…
The second misleading thing is neither the pie chart nor the pamphlet explain exactly what "program services are." The reason Save the Children and Money emphasize the program services statistic is, presumably, that it is seen as a rough approximation for "money that actually helps people," as opposed to funds spent on overhead and fundraising expenses. "Program," one would assume, is what should go to the children in the folders. Why else trot out the statistic to use for rankings and as pie charts in promotional literature?"
