Ex-Fox News Host Says Network's Kimberly Guilfoyle 'Omission' Is 'Coming From the Top'

Ex-Fox News host Gretchen Carlsonpiled on after a former executive accused the network of failing to aggressively cover the mounting scandal surrounding U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, as she claimed the decision was made "from the top."

Carlson, who spent more than a decade at Fox before leaving the network in 2016, weighed in after former Fox News vice president Ken LaCorte accused his old employer of "journalistic malpractice" over what he alleged was sparse coverage of the Guilfoyle story, blaming frightened middle management.

"As someone who was also at Fox for more than a decade I can tell you that Fox's omission of this story from their show rundowns is not middle management fearful - it is [100%] coming from the top," Carlson wrote on X.

Notably, Mediaite's Sean Jamesreported that Fox did air a brief report on the controversy Thursday, more than a day after the first major Journal story broke, and published a fuller article on Sunday reporting that Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were weighing Guilfoyle's removal.

Carlson's intervention, however, has sharpened an extraordinary public dispute among former Fox veterans over how the network handled a damaging story involving one of its own former stars and a prominent figure in President Donald Trump's orbit.

LaCorte had argued Sunday that "fear and inaction" among managers explained what he described as Fox's decision to largely ignore allegations already being reported by other major outlets.

"To be clear, this isn't a simple 'mistake' by Fox," he wrote. "It's a conscious choice to ignore a major story that has been reported worldwide by every major news outlet."

Lacorte was ousted from Fox News in 2016 amid languishing traffic of the website he oversaw. A person familiar with the inner workings of Fox News told Mediaite, "When Ken ran FoxNews.com circa 2016, it was languishing with 17 million unique [visitors per month]." A site overhaul soon after Lacorte's departure led to a traffic explosion, as Foxnews.com now garners approximately 163 million multiplatform uniques per month.

The controversy stems from a series of Wall Street Journal reports detailing allegations about Guilfoyle's conduct as ambassador, including messages in which she allegedly asked Trump donor Eric Deters to put $100,000 toward her American Express card bill while offering to help him gain access to administration officials. Her attorney has disputed the authenticity of the messages.

The Journal later reported that Guilfoyle promoted the interests of wealthy business figures while serving in Greece, helping fuel discussions inside the Trump administration about whether she should remain in her post.

Gretchen Carlson became a pioneer for women speaking out about sexual harassment in the workplace when she went public with a lawsuit against Fox News chairman Roger Ailes four years ago. Still, the former Fox News host tells Yahoo Life that there's more work to do when it comes to empowering women, and explains how those efforts are tied in with the current Black Lives Matter movement.

"All of these movements are sort of working in tandem and in parallel lines because while the movement of women and sexual harassment and having a voice is completely different from BLM, it's similar in the sense that people are incredibly motivated and inspired to speak up," Carlson explains. "I really believe that all of this is happening for a reason."

The journalist and author of Be Fierce: Stop Harassment and Take Your Power Back spoke directly to the fact that voices like hers were often ignored or silenced in the past - adding that corporate nondisclosure agreements continue to keep employees quiet about toxicity in the workplace. But after bravely sharing her truth in 2016, Carlson was ultimately credited for being a leading voice in the #MeToo movement that shook up the corporate structure, and the way that power is leveraged in the workplace. Now, the Black Lives Matter movement is working in a similar way when it comes to shedding light on racial injustices and discrimination in these same spaces.

"If companies thought that this whole revolution was a passing fad, that's really not the case," she says. "Now whether it's gun violence at schools or harassment in the workplace or Black Lives Matter, people know their voice matters. And that to me is so inspiring to watch these other movements happen, at the same time that I'm working on my specific issue."

When speaking to the necessity for companies to address these issues and change their culture as a result, Carlson refers to the efforts she made to drive that change at the Miss America Organization before stepping down from her position as chairwoman in June 2019.

"I was incredibly proud of the changes that were made with the Miss America institution as we moved through the hundred years," she says, while noting that the most influential changes, including the elimination of the swimsuit competition, were made as a result of unanimous decisions by the board of directors and not her alone. "And the whole point was to try and keep the organization that benefited me in my life relevant for future generations and at its past or most current state it wasn't."
Discussing her episode of the MAKERS podcast, "DNA of a MAKER," hosted by Lilliana Vazquez that premiers on Tuesday, Carlson also explains that working with brands that put women at the forefront is something she's long cared about. While working as a vocal advocate since 2016 and her ongoing efforts to lift other women up with the creation of the Lift Our Voices organization, however, Carlson says that doing work with organizations with the same values is now vital.

"I've always been a huge supporter of women and especially over the last four years, I think it's really important to support other organizations and entities who have been doing great work on behalf of women as well," she says. "You know, part of this whole process is banding together to have a louder voice than just singular voices."

On July 27, The New Yorker published an exposé that would rock CBS and eventually lead to the departure of its chief Leslie Moonves, accused by several women of unwanted sexual advances. That journalist Ronan Farrow was working on this blockbuster story was an open secret. Not everyone knew, though, and on Monday, suing CBS shareholders pointed to more than $200 million in insider stock sales as alleged evidence of a fraud.
The shareholders leading the suit are Gene Samit and John Lantz. They first brought putative class actions not long after the story in The New Yorker, alleging that CBS failed to disclose information in proxy statements that would have a material effect on its business.
Now, in an amended consolidated complaint, the plaintiffs are going a step further in an attempt to show CBS executives had knowledge of wrongness.
"The timing and amount of the Class Period CBS stock sales by these executives were unusual and suspicious, and further demonstrate defendants Moonves, [then COO Joseph] Ianniello and [chief accounting officer Larry] Liding's motive to commit fraud."
The amended complaint includes a chart of the movement of CBS' stock dating all the way back to the time that Roger Ailes resigned from Fox News following allegations of sexual harassment from Gretchen Carlson and others. The story in the suit that is told is that while CBS was telling everyone that it was committed to zero-tolerance sexual misconduct and as Moonves was being hailed as a steward of stability, CBS' culture was rotten, and that executives had affirmative duties to do something.
CBS' share price rose significantly in the months following Ailes' departure, and while other factors might have been responsible for this, the company's stock price was relatively stable when allegations against Harvey Weinstein set off the #metoo movement. At the time, as noted in the chart, Moonves called #metoo "a watershed movement, adding "it's important that a company's culture not allow this."

What? Miss America Will No Longer "Judge Women On Physical Appearance"

2018 is the year of virtue signaling, and if you aren't waving your righteousness around like a flag, you aren't doing modern progressivism right. The social justice warriors won't stop until they've ruined every last bastion of American greatness including Star Wars. Now, it seems the seething SJW's have reached the Miss America pageant which has announced it will be removing the swimsuit competition and no longer judging contestants on their physical appearance.

That's right, in the name of equality, there can no longer be competition between women because that is recognizing that not everyone is equal. The same thing will happen to the Miss America pageant that happens to everything else the social justice warriors touch. It will lose fans and viewers because no one is interested until the company is forced to realize they've been hoodwinked and the very people who pressured them to change their ways don't support them. Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson took over the organization and announced the changes.
