Suspect
Patrick Wood Crusius (born July 27, 1998) was arrested after the shooting and charged with capital murder.[30][31][32] A 21-year-old white male,[33][34][35] he was last known to have lived in his family's home in Allen, Texas, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex,[12][29][36] approximately 650 miles (1,050 km) from El Paso.[37] He graduated in 2017 from Plano Senior High School, and was enrolled at Collin College from 2017 until spring 2019.[37]
Police said he bought the gun used in the attack legally, but provided no details about the purchase.[38] During his first interrogation, he told detectives he had targeted Mexicans, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.[39][40][41][42][34]
Manifesto
The Walmart Supercenter where the shooting took place
The El Paso police chief, Greg Allen, said that they are "reasonably confident"[43] that a manifesto, titled The Inconvenient Truth, was posted by the suspect on the online message board 8chan shortly before the shooting.[30] It identifies the type of weapon used in the attack; the suspect's name was revealed in a separate document in the post.[44] Site moderators quickly removed the original post, though users continued sharing copies.[44] Claiming to have been inspired by the Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand that killed 51 people earlier the same year,[45] the author expresses support for the perpetrator of the Christchurch shootings[33][46][47] and bemoans grievances[48][49] such as environmental degradation,[5][50][46] "cultural and ethnic replacement",[47][51] and a "Hispanic invasion".[2][49][52]
The anti-Hispanic, anti-immigrant manifesto promotes the white nationalist and far-right conspiracy theory called the Great Replacement,[2][33] often attributed to the French writer Renaud Camus.[45] While the document uses language about immigrants similar to that used by U.S. president Donald Trump,[n 2] such as referring to a migrant "invasion",[2][49][56] it states that the author's beliefs predate Trump's presidency, and that Trump should not be blamed for the attack.[41][50][52] The author's "racially extremist views", according to The New York Times, could be used to prosecute the shooting as a hate crime or domestic terrorism.[12]
The manifesto states that Democrats would soon control the United States partly due to an increasing Hispanic population,[50] an idea that had gained acceptance for years on right-wing radio shows.[33] Criticizing both the Democratic Party and Republican Party[50] for allowing corporations to "import foreign workers",[51] the author describes the shooting as an "incentive" for Hispanics to leave the country, which would "remove the threat" of a Hispanic voting bloc.[50] While primarily focused on ethnic and racial grievances,[5] the document also expresses fears of automation's effects on employment and blames corporations for overusing natural resources.[50]

Pfc. Glendon Oakley, who gained attention for getting children to safety during the August 2019 mass shooting at an El Paso, Texas Walmart, was found dead in his quarters this week.
"The 1st Armored Division can confirm the death of 23 year old, Pvt. Glendon Oakley. The Soldier was found deceased in his on-post quarters on April 8," Fort Bliss officials told American Military News on Friday.
"Oakley served as an automated supply logistical specialist, assigned to 504th Composite Supply Company, 142nd Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Armored Division Sustainment Brigade and was a Killeen, Texas native. His death is under investigation by Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. At this point in the investigation, foul play in not suspected."
Oakley had joined the Army in October 2017, and had previously served on deployment to Kuwait.
His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge.
On the day of the El Paso shooting, Oakley was shopping at a nearby Footlocker store when a child came in distraught over the shooting.
Oakley had a gun license, and withdrew his concealed handgun upon exiting the store. However, he saw what he described as "a whole bunch of kids just running around" without their parents, so he went to work carrying and escorting them to safety.
El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen credited Oakley for saving children during the massacre.
Days after the shooting, President Donald Trump visited El Paso and met with Oakley, among other first responders.
"What a job he did," Trump said of Oakley. "There are lot of heroes. A lot of people who did just incredible work."
Oakley was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his heroic act.
Two months after the shooting, Oakley was arrested for desertion near his hometown of Killeen. Harker Heights Police Department officers located him in his vehicle on behalf of Fort Bliss, who issued an order for his arrest.

Texas Seeks Death for El Paso Shooter, Feds Treating as 'Domestic Terrorism'
El Paso prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty against the man who allegedly killed 20 people and wounded 26 others in the mass-casualty shooting on Saturday. The U.S. Attorney's Office says they will treat the shooting "as domestic terrorism."
Police have not formally released the name of the alleged killer but many news outlets have released a name of a suspect in the shooting. El Paso County District Clerk court records obtained by Breitbart Texas on Sunday morning indicate that prosecutors filed a capital murder charge.
"We will seek the death penalty," El Paso County District Attorney Jaime Esparza told reporters in a press conference on Sunday morning. "We will hold him accountable."
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Texas John F. Bash said, "We are treating this as domestic terrorism." The federal prosecutor said the suspect could also face federal hate crimes and firearms charges. "We will deliver swift justice," he added.
Breitbart Texas provided live-wire coverage of the events surrounding the active shooter situation in El Paso beginning Saturday morning. The shooter allegedly opened fire on customers at a Walmart filled with back-to-school shoppers. Within a few minutes, the shooter allegedly killed 20 people and sent 26 others to area hospitals - including at least two children. The Cielo Vista shopping area is well known to be a place where Mexican nationals also shop after legally crossing the border from Mexico. At least three of the dead were Mexican nationals, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a Twitter video.
Governor Abbott promised the people of El Paso, We are going to aggressively prosecute it both as capital murder but also as a hate crime, which is exactly what it appears to be." The governor said the thoughts, actions, and crimes allegedly committed by the shooter "are not who and what Texas is and we will not tolerate it."
Authorities say they arrested the alleged shooter a short distance away from the Walmart and placed him into custody without incident. El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said that none of his officers responded to the active-shooter incident within six minutes and did not fire any rounds in response to the shooting. He referenced a manifesto allegedly written by the accused shooter, calling it a "potential nexus to a hate crime."
On Sunday morning, Chief Allen told reporters that investigators were "reasonably confident" the accused shooter is the author of the manifesto, NBC News reported.

20 Killed, 26 Injured in Texas Mass Shooting, Officials Say
By The Associated Press
August 3, 2019 Updated: August 3, 2019
EL PASO, Texas-Twenty people were killed and more than two dozen injured in a shooting Saturday in a busy shopping area in the Texas border town of El Paso, the state's governor said.
Meanwhile, the police chief said among the possibilities being investigated is whether it was a hate crime. Two law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity identified the suspect taken into custody as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius of the Dallas area.
Police said another 26 people were injured, most of them being treated at area hospitals. Most of the victims were believed to have been shot at a Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall, they said, adding that the store was packed with as many as 3,000 people during the busy back-to-school shopping season.
"The scene was a horrific one," said El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen, who added that many of the injured had life-threatening injuries. He said police also had found a manifesto that may have been written by Crusius and posted online-one reason it was being investigated as a hate crime.
Residents were volunteering to give blood to the injured, while police and military members were trying to help people who were looking for missing loved ones.
"It's chaos right now," said Austin Johnson, an Army medic at nearby Fort Bliss, who volunteered to help at the shopping center and later at the school that was serving as a reunification center.
Adriana Quezada, 39, said she was in the women's clothing section of Walmart with her two children when the shooting happened.
"I heard the shots but I thought they were hits, like roof construction," she said.
Her 19-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son threw themselves to the ground, then ran out of the Walmart through an emergency exit. They were not hurt, Quezada said.
She said she saw four men, dressed in black, moving together firing guns indiscriminately. Police later said they think there was just one shooter.
Police said by midafternoon that a suspect was in custody and the public was no longer in danger. Gomez said the suspect, who used a rifle, was arrested without incident. Police believe he was the "sole shooter" but are continuing to investigate reports that others were involved.
