Anti-monarchy protesters arrested in London
Police say the republican demonstrators were conspiring to "cause a public nuisance"
Police officers arrested a number of anti-monarchy demonstrators and seized protest placards ahead of the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday. The protesters say they want to be able to choose their head of state.
London's Metropolitan Police said on Saturday morning that "a significant police operation" was underway in central London. Shortly afterwards, the force announced that it had arrested four people "on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance," and another three "on suspicion of possessing articles to cause criminal damage." The first group were found in possession of "lock-on devices," police said.
"Public nuisance" was made a criminal offense under controversial protest laws brought in last year, while "locking on" - a tactic popularized by climate activists - was criminalized when a separate public order bill came into force earlier this week.
Republic, an anti-monarchy group, said that its leader and five key organizers were among those arrested, and that hundreds of the group's placards were seized by police. The Alliance of European Republican Movements - which opposes monarchies across the continent - posted a video to social media showing Republic's leader, Graham Smith, being detained.
Other photos and videos show officers seizing bundles of placards reading 'Not My King' and taking banners off protesters at Trafalgar Square, where hundreds of demonstrators had gathered to oppose the coronation of Britain's new monarch. As Charles III was crowned inside Westminster Abbey, the crowd at Trafalgar Square chanted "down with the crown" and "get a real job."
"Instead of a coronation we want an election. Instead of Charles we want a choice. It's that simple," Republic tweeted before the ceremony began.
Trafalgar Square was a symbolic location for the protest. Aside from its location along the coronation procession route, the square is home to a statue of King Charles I, who was executed in 1649 after the English Civil War. England was briefly a republic after his death, before the monarchy was restored in 1660 with the coronation of his son, Charles II.
Elsewhere in London, police arrested "around 20" climate protesters affiliated with the 'Just Stop Oil' group, the group said. Claiming that the protesters had no plans of disrupting the coronation and simply planned on revealing t-shirts with the group's name written on them, a Just Stop Oil spokesperson described the police operation as "a dystopian nightmare."

Prince Charles Under Fire For Reportedly 'Bailing Out' Andrew Over Epstein
Prince Charles was accused of "bailing out" Prince Andrew over reports he is giving his brother most of a $9 million (?7 million) loan for his Jeffrey Epstein settlement.
The future king has been accused of giving Andrew a short-term loan to cover the cost of a settlement in the lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre.
The Duke of York is selling his ski chalet, but The Sun reported he may not complete the sale in time and needed to borrow in order to relieve financial pressure.
The U.K. tabloid suggested the Prince of Wales was covering the bulk of the sum but Queen Elizabeth II would also contribute, while no public funds have been used.
Prince Charles' representatives at Clarence House declined to comment on the allegations.
It comes after U.K. broadsheet The Daily Telegraph reported Queen Elizabeth II was making a contribution via her Duchy of Lancaster estate.
Andrew was accused of raping Giuffre when she was a 17-year-old sex trafficking victim but agreed to an out-of-court payment which must be made by March 17, 2021.
Graham Smith, chief executive of Republic, a British pressure group advocating the replacement of the United Kingdom's monarchy with a de facto parliamentary republic told
Newsweek: "The whole thing stinks really. The whole arrangement is to avoid Andrew having to go to court.
"We're now seeing the monarch and the heir bailing out Andrew so he doesn't have to face up to very serious accusations which have not been withdrawn and which he has not proven are incorrect," Smith said. "The accusations still stand.
"The questions still remain about where all this money is coming from and why they're so keen to bail him out to avoid what should happen, which is that he should be made to answer these questions in a court of law."
Nigel Cawthorne, author of Prince Andrew: Epstein, Maxwell and the Palace, told Newsweek any loan was not a good use of money but would not harm Charles' prospects as king in the long term.
He said: "Diverting money to Andrew doesn't seem terribly right to me. We could very well have a bankrupt royal family before we know it.

Police to investigate Prince Charles' charity
By Mary O'Connor | BBC News
The Metropolitan Police is to investigate claims Prince Charles' charity offered honours help to a Saudi citizen.
The force said it is investigating alleged offences under the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925.
There have been no arrests or interviews under caution, the Met said.
The Prince's Foundation said it would be "inappropriate to comment on an ongoing investigation".
It is understood to be continuing to offer its full co-operation to the Metropolitan Police.
Clarence House reiterated its previous insistence that Prince Charles had "no knowledge of the alleged offer of honours or British citizenship on the basis of donation to his charities".
He is president of the foundation but is not involved with its governance, with the charity's trustees overseeing its day-to-day activities.
The Met's decision to investigate follows its assessment of a letter it received last September relating to media reports that Prince Charles' former valet Michael Fawcett allegedly offered to help secure an honour for a Saudi citizen.
Anti-monarchy pressure group Republic reported the heir to the throne and Mr Fawcett to the police last September.
Its chief executive Graham Smith said: "We hope the investigation will be carried out without fear or favour and be as thorough as it needs to be."
After the allegations emerged, Mr Fawcett temporarily stepped back as chief executive of The Prince's Foundation, before resigning in November. The charity announced an investigation into the allegations.

Prince William and Prince Charles told they are unfit to replace Queen Elizabeth II
PRINCE WILLIAM and Prince Charles have been told the British public should be allowed to vote to determine who replaces Queen Elizabeth II as the UK's head of state.
Republic is an organisation that campaigns for the abolishment of the monarchy and the replacement of Queen Elizabeth II with an elected, democratic head of state. Its Graham Smith told Express.co.uk that the UK needs to have the option to choose who replaces the Queen instead of the Prince of Wales automatically taking the throne.
Mr Smith said: "I think we need to move away from people sitting back as spectators being told who their head of state is going to be.
"We need to have a choice, it is clear people want to have a choice.
"For years there has been polling saying that there is no majority in favour of either Charles, William or other royals succeeding the Queen.
"Clearly, there is a division of opinion and if you want to have a choice of who it is going to be you cannot just pick between two royals.
"You must have a vote, that is called a republic.
"It is time to scrap the whole lot and let the British people vote for the next head of state rather than us being told we are going to be spectators that just have to like it or lump it when Charles takes the throne."
During the same interview, Mr Smith also raised concerns regarding the possibility of a serious political crisis arising when Prince Charles succeeds Queen Elizabeth II as King.
He said: "The monarchy tends to survive because of the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth II could face a rash of countries removing her as head of state with Barbados causing the "house of cards" to fall, a royal expert has told Newsweek.
The Caribbean island announced plans on Tuesday to remove the queen as its head of state and achieve "full sovereignty" before the 55th anniversary of independence from the U.K. in November 2021.
The move has triggered speculation of a domino effect among pro- and anti-monarchy commentators alike.
Barbados Removes Queen Elizabeth II Amid Claims Prince Harry Proved Right
Jamaica is widely tipped as the next country to remove the queen, although the opposition People's National Party lost a general election earlier this month after promising a referendum on becoming a republic.
Ingrid Seward, author of upcoming biography Prince Philip Revealed, told Newsweek: "I thought that was really sad about Barbados.
"I'd been there a lot because I had friends that lived there and they always seemed to like the queen.
"It seems to me that once one country goes the house of cards falls a little bit."
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently called for the Commonwealth, made up predominantly of countries in the former British Empire, to have a conversation about the past in order to move on from colonialism.
However, Seward said she believed he may also have contributed to the problem with his own past behavior, including an infamous incident in which he wore Nazi uniform to a fancy dress party in 2005.
"I was talking to one of the ministers just after Harry had done his Nazi fancy dress and they were really shocked," she said.
"Thinking of that, I wonder if it's something to do with the behavior of the younger members of the royal family and looking at the queen's great age.
"I think they probably feel that with the queen when she goes it will feel like the end of an era and that will be the moment to cut ties."
In response to the Barbados announcement, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said it was "a matter for the government and people of Barbados."
Graham Smith, chief executive of anti-monarchy campaign group Republic, said that he believed many countries were merely waiting until Prince Charles becomes king before rejecting the crown.
He told Newsweek: "I would be surprised if other Caribbean countries and the smaller Commonwealth countries don't follow suit.
"Most of the realms are fairly small and have more in common with each other than with us. I think they're likely to go down that road.
"I think it boosts Australia's prospects as well. I think it's likely, it's a matter of when rather than if. It's unlikely to happen with Scott Morrison as prime minister.
"But I think the queen's reign is getting towards the end and that's going to focus the mind as well.
"Other Commonwealth countries abandoning the monarchy is also going to strengthen the argument not least because they will show the way on how it's done.
"They'll stay in the Commonwealth as well. It's been speculated since as long as I've been doing this that if one goes it will all start to unravel.
"We're about to see whether that is true or not."
Thank you anon…

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles Receive a Warning Over Their Excessive Spending
The issue of taxpayer support for the UK royal family has been debated for a long time, culminating in 1992 when Windsor Castle caught fire. At the time most people surveyed suggested that taxpayers not pay for restoration work.
Queen Elizabeth II and her son and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, received a warning from an unaffiliated politcal action group over "millions of pounds" spent to maintain the monarchy in the nation. The warning came from Graham Smith, CEO of 'Republic', a British political lobbying firm that campaigns for the abolition of the monarchy in the United Kingdom. Smith says it is difficult to say for certain how much money the royals spend, because not all their finances are disclosed, but claimed that the biggest spenders are Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. The activist criticized the Prince of Wales for excessive spending on luxury travel around the world.
"What I would say is that Prince Charles takes £20million ($25.5 million) at least every year from the Duchy of Cornwall which is money that should be going to the treasury so that is a huge chunk of the overall cost of the monarchy. On top of that he also has various things paid for him by the government directly, certain areas of travel for example and obviously security. So, he is probably one of the most expensive members of the royal family", Smith stated to the Daily Express.
Smith claims that there is a competition between members of the royal family on "who can spend the most". Queen Elizabeth II, Smith says, is undoubtedly the biggest spender.
"Certainly, someone like Prince Andrew has also shown himself to be quite causal with publicly-funded travel, with helicopter flights and private jets and so on. It is very hard to pinpoint one over the other, but we know that the Queen and Charles take millions of pounds from the two Duchies. Obviously the Queen spends an awful lot because she is the head of state and the head of the firm so she is responsible for most of that £345 million ($441 million) a year", Smith told the Daily Express.
Smith and his lobbying company want to transform the United Kingdom from a constitutional monarchy into a republic with an elected head of state. Instead of a queen, the organization wants to choose a person that will represent the nation independently of UK politicians.
Debate on royal spending reemerged this year after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced on 8 January that they would step down from senior roles in the royal family and become financially independent. Particular focus was placed on the more than $3 million that was paid by British taxpayers for the renovation of their residence. The couple have stated that they will pay back the figure, while reports indicate that the Sussexes do not intend to permanently return to Britain and live in a royal residence.

No Flag For You!
He should be celebrating his birthday in the Tower of London.
Prince Andrew loses flag tribute, promotion to Admiral on 60th birthday
Government buildings will not be required to fly the Union flag to mark the 60th birthday of the Duke of York following his decision to step back from public duties, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport says.
Andrew celebrates his birthday on Wednesday, but ahead of the milestone the Union flag tribute was branded "crass and offensive" by Graham Smith, chief executive of Republic, which campaigns for an elected head of state.
The duke gave up royal duties for the foreseeable future last November following a disastrous Newsnight appearance about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
He faced a backlash after the interview with critics accusing him of failing to show regret over his friendship with the disgraced financier, and empathy with his victims.
Downing Street said earlier this month the issue of flying the national flag in tribute was being looked at.
A Culture department spokesman said: "Following the decision by the Duke of York to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, there is no longer a requirement for UK Government buildings to fly the Union flag on Wednesday February 19."
The bells of Westminster Abbey will still ring out in celebration as it is a Royal Peculiar - a place of worship that falls under the jurisdiction of the monarch rather than a bishop.
The abbey also marks the birthdays of the Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, their children, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children.
The announcement is unlikely to have a significant effect as many Government buildings - such as UK embassies or Government department offices - already fly the Union flag every day of the year and are expected to continue to do so.
Local authorities have the discretion whether to fly the Union flag on any given day.
Virginia Giuffre, who claims she was trafficked by Epstein, also alleges the duke had sex with her on three separate occasions, including when she was 17, still a minor under US law.
Andrew, who strenuously denies the allegations, has faced calls to talk to the FBI and US prosecutors still investigating Epstein, who committed suicide in jail while facing sex trafficking charges.
The duke was due to be promoted to Admiral on his 60th birthday, in line with a longstanding policy that sees senior royals treated as serving military members.
But Buckingham Palace has already said the duke has asked to defer the promotion until he is able to fully resume royal duties.
According to reports, Andrew is expected to celebrate his birthday with his former wife Sarah, Duchess of York, their daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and friends at his Royal Lodge home in Windsor Great Park.

Royal wedding: two-thirds of Britons aren't interested, poll suggests
''
'We're not a nation of republicans yet - but we've stopped being a nation of royalists'
A global audience will be watching when Prince Harry weds his US fiancée Meghan Markle on Saturday - but most Britons don't care that much, a poll suggested on Monday.
The research, commissioned by anti-monarchist pressure group Republic, found that 66 per cent of Britons are not interested in the event - with 60 per cent of them planning to just have a normal weekend.
Harry and Markle are set to marry at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle with more than 5,000 media staff and around 100,000 well-wishers expected to descend on the market town.
The survey, by polling firm YouGov, showed that 57 per cent of respondents believed the royal family should pay not only for the wedding but also for the costs of police.
Past opinion polls have suggested that Britons are still overwhelmingly in favor of the monarchy continuing. Ipsos Mori research from 2016 found 76 per cent rejected the idea of Britain becoming a republic.
And another poll, by ComRes, earlier this month found 58 per cent of respondents thought the royal wedding and the recent birth of Prince Louis to Prince William and his wife Kate were events of which Britain could be proud, although support was more pronounced among older people.
The YouGov survey did however suggest that the popularity of the royal family is contingent on the personalities of its members. While 60 per cent of respondents say they like Queen Elizabeth, her son Charles is far less popular.
Nearly half of respondents would prefer "someone else" to succeed the Queen, while only 37 per cent want Charles, who is the father of Harry and his older brother William.
"This YouGov poll shows a very clear picture of a nation disinterested and apathetic about the royal family," Graham Smith, chief executive of Republic, said.
"We're not a nation of republicans yet - but we've stopped being a nation of royalists."

UK cops block bid to trace Prince Andrew's location on night he's accused of sex with teen
British police have blocked a legal bid to trace Prince Andrew's bodyguards' movements on the night he allegedly first had sex with a Jeffrey Epstein accuser.
The disgraced royal claims that he could not have had sex with Virginia Roberts Giuffre in London in March 2001 - because he was grabbing pizza with his daughter at a chain restaurant in the small town of Woking.
With no witnesses of the prince's pie date, the Mirror Online submitted a Freedom of Information Act request hoping that his royal protection officers' movements would help prove his whereabouts that day.
But London's Met police rejected the request, citing national security concerns - and sparking an immediate backlash, the UK news site said.
Graham Smith, of anti-monarchy group Republic, slammed the decision.
"Revealing locations from 19 years ago cannot possibly reveal personal data, either directly or indirectly," Smith told Mirror Online. "The police are tasked with protecting the royals from physical harm, not from legitimate inquiry, criminal investigation or embarrassment."
Giuffre - who claims to have had sex with Andrew three times after being trafficked by late pedophile Epstein - attacked the "lies after lies" that she claims protect the prince.
"There could only be one reason the prince's bodyguards would not to expose where the prince had been on March 10th 2001- the night in question, bc he wasn't at Woking Pizza with his daughter B," she tweeted, referring to Princess Beatrice.
Giuffre claims she first had sex with the royal when she was 17 at Ghislaine Maxwell's townhouse where a now-infamous photo was taken of them together.
Andrew gave his Pizza Express alibi during his disastrous BBC interview that led to him being booted from royal duties.
Both he and Buckingham Palace have vehemently denied Giuffre's allegations. Epstein, 66, died last August after being found hanged in his Manhattan lockup facing serious sex crimes.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that its decision to investigate alleged offences followed "assessment of a September 2021 letter. This related to media reporting alleging offers of help were made to secure honours and citizenship for a Saudi national".
It added: "Officers liaised with The Prince's Foundation about the findings of an independent investigation into fundraising practices.
"The foundation provided a number of relevant documents.
"These documents were reviewed alongside existing information. The assessment determined an investigation will commence.
"There have been no arrests or interviews under caution."
Honours - such as MBEs, OBEs and CBEs - publicly recognise people's achievements in public life or commitment to serving Britain and anyone in the UK can nominate a British national to receive one.
Honorary awards are given to people who are not British or a national of a country where the Queen is Head of State.
Most are awarded on the recommendation of an honours committee within the Cabinet Office, which is then sent to the prime minister and awarded by the Queen.>>15636578
