The existential crisis that recently engulfed the British Labour Party has intensified over the past week, andit is now clear that the party is facing political extinction.
Two weeks ago,British voters showed their contempt for Labour, after enduring two years of scandal-ridden and ineffective government. The partylost almost 1,600 local council seats;ceded control of the Welsh parliament for the first time ever; andperformed very poorly in Scotland.
TheLabourParty has responded to thisunprecedented electoral drubbing by engaging in an unseemly orgy of political infightingthat will continue for months to come.
Within days,some 90 MPs announced that they no longer had faith in Keir Starmeras prime minister - and five cabinet members resigned, including Wes Streeting, the health secretary, who had been maneuvering to depose the unpopular Starmer for some time.
Streeting, however, declined to challenge Starmer for the leadership because he could not muster the support of the necessary 81 MPs to do so.
A week later,Streeting delivered an extraordinary speech in which he announced that he would contest the leadership when Starmer was eventually challenged, describedStarmer's ascension to Labour leadership as "dishonest" and astonishingly urged Britain to re-join the European Union- thereby reviving the divisive Brexit issue that has poisoned British politics for over a decade, and had previously split the Labour Party.
Streeting, by injecting Brexit into the Labour leadership contest, has ensured that it will become much more divisive and bitter that it otherwise would have been.One Labour minister has already condemned Streeting for "re-opening the Brexit wars."
Other potential challengers - Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband - have also declined to challenge Starmer at this stage, andthe unpopular Starmer appears determined to remain prime minister for the present.
This strange political impasse then provoked the ambitious mayor of Manchester,Andy Burnham, to launch a prospective challenge against Starmer. Burnham, however, cannot challenge at present as he is not in parliament - because earlier this year Starmer refused to endorse him as a candidate in a by-election in a safe Labour seat, that was subsequently won by the Greens.
Then, last week a young MP in the Manchester seat of Makerfield,Josh Symons, resigned from parliament so that Burnham could contest the resulting by-election(due to be held on June 18), win a seat in the Commons, and then challenge Starmer for the prime ministership. After defeating Starmer, Burnham would then have three years to win back those millions of voters that have recently deserted Labour, and lead Labour to victory in the 2029 general election.
This is the Machiavellian plan concocted by the apparatchiks that currently control the Labour Party - and Streeting, Rayner, and Miliband have, for the time being, acquiesced in it,no doubt expecting to be suitably rewarded with cabinet appointments if and when Burnham becomes prime minister.
There are, however, numerous, insuperable difficulties confronting this high-risk strategy.
Burnham is by no means certain to win the by-election that has been gifted him. He is currently a very popular mayor of Manchester,but at the recent council elections Reform won every ward in the Makerfield electorate- and voters may well take a dim view of their local member being edged out so as to allow Burnham to make a bid for the prime ministership.
In 1965, Prime Minister Harold Wilson engineered a similar piece of by-election spivery when Patrick Gordon Walker, who was slated to become foreign secretary, surprisingly lost his seat at the general election that brought Wilson to power a year before. Wilson subsequently arranged by-election in a safe Labour seat - in which voters refused to elect Walker.
Makerfield is a whiteworking-class electorate that voted overwhelmingly in favor of leaving the EU at the Brexit referendum in 2015 and is staunchly anti-immigrant. Josh Symons won the seat at last year's election with a majority of 5,300 votes over the Reform party candidate.

A Utah oil magnate was arrested along with his wife in a dramatic raid on their opulent 27,000-square-foot mansion after allegedly smuggling more than $300 million worth of oil from Mexico to the US with the help of drug cartels, according to reports.
James and Kelly Jensen were arrested on April 23 by US Marshals, who used battering rams to bust through the doors of the couple's $9.2 million mansion in outside Salt Lake City, KSLTV reported.
"They were unwilling to come out," Assistant US Attorney Michael Hess said of the family, which has deep political ties - Kelly's father, Gordon Walker, worked in the US Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Ronald Reagan, while her mother, Carlene Walker, was a Utah state Senator, according to KVEO.
Just days earlier on April 17, the Jensens were indicted on charges they conspired to buy and smuggle more than 2,800 shipments of stolen oil from Mexico into the US as part of an alleged scheme that began three years ago, according to the feds.
The Jensens' company made payments for the crude oil to "businesses in Mexico that operate only through the permission of Mexican criminal organizations," according to the feds.
The feds alleged the family used their ill-gotten gains to buy a new home and cars - and have moved to seize them.
Their sons Zachary and Max, were also allegedly in on it and were also indicted, though it is unclear if they were arrested at the mountainside mansion with their parents.
The family owns and operates Arroyo Terminals, a Texas company that buys and sells crude oil at a property just miles from the US border in Rio Hondo.

UK waged 'black propaganda' campaign against USSR, China - declassified docs
London for decades sought to drive a wedge between Moscow, Beijing, the Arab world and Africa through fake news, a researcher claims
A secretive unit within the British Foreign Office waged a "black propaganda" campaign against the USSR and China from the 1950s to the 1970s to undermine their global influence, the Guardian has reported, citing a researcher who studied a trove of recently declassified intelligence documents. London did not shy away from stirring up anti-Semitism, racism and Islamist sentiment to achieve its goals, the academic claims.
"These releases are among the most important of the past two decades. It's very clear now that the UK engaged in more black propaganda than historians assume and these efforts were more systemic, ambitious and offensive," Rory Cormac, a professor of international relations at Nottingham University, told the Guardian.
According to the newspaper, the documents reveal "hundreds of extensive and costly operations" conducted by the Information Research Department (IRD) - a covert unit initially established by the post-WWII Labour government to counter Communist propaganda.The unit "went far beyond merely exposing Soviet disinformation," Cormac has said, adding that the UK "definitely intended to deceive audiences in order to get the message across."
The IRD had a separate highly secretive Special Editorial Unit responsible for so-called "black propaganda," a special type of fake news designed to look as if it's produced by a nation or organization that the actual creator wants to discredit.
Some of the "reports" sent to Western governments and media included analysis supposedly coming from independent institutions, which were secretly run by the IRD, and warned Western nations about alleged "Soviet subversion." The British unit also forged at least 11 reports supposedly released by Soviet state-run news agencies, according to the Guardian.
London particularly sought to drive a wedge between Moscow and its allies in the Arab world by both producing fake news discrediting the Soviet Union in the eyes of Arabs, and stirring up Islamist sentiment among them, the paper said. One such report, presented as coming from the USSR, blasted Soviet military aid to Egypt during the 1967 Six-Day War with Israel as a "waste." The British operatives also forged pro-Islamist literature, including that of the Muslim Brotherhood - a group that had significant influence in the Arab world at that time….
The British unit reportedly did not shy away from stirring up anti-Semitic sentiment as well. One of its leaflets incited Egyptians to attack Israel by asking them: "why don't they direct their armies against the Jews?"
The IRD was similarly active in Africa, where it repeatedly sought to convey an image of the Soviet Union seeing Africans as uncivilized….
Documents declassified back in 2021 and seen by the Guardian also showed that the British propaganda campaign had had a role in the mass slaughter of Communists in Indonesia in the 1960s. Between 500,000 and three million supporters of the Communist Party were killed at that time, according to various estimates.
These efforts had the full support of several consecutive British governments, according to Cormac. In 1964, the Conservative Prime Minister, Alec Douglas-Home, ordered the IRD to target Ghana over its supposed leanings to Moscow. Months later, the Labour Foreign Secretary, Patrick Gordon Walker, called on the unit to produce black propaganda "from time to time" and particularly stir up racial tensions between the Africans and Chinese.
Although the unit was officially disbanded in 1977, similar efforts allegedly continued for almost another decade, the Guardian says. Now, the British government is still engaged in an "information war," according to Cormac.
In February, just days before the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss revealed that the UK was creating a new unit to combat "disinformation" from Moscow. In March, the Telegraph reported that the unit dubbed the Government Information Cell was reaching Russian social media to disseminate London's view on the conflict in Ukraine.
"Liz Truss has a 'government information cell,' and defense intelligence sends out daily tweets to 'pre-but' Russian plots and gain the upper hand in the information war, but for much of the cold war the UK used far more devious means," the researcher said, adding that the declassified papers are "particularly significant as a precursor to more modern efforts of putting intelligence into the public domain."
