Lord Hermer, whose full title is The Rt Hon. the Lord Hermer KC, is a current member of the House of Lords and serves as the UK's Attorney General, appointed on 5 July 2024.
He is the government's chief legal adviser and holds independent public interest functions, overseeing the Law Officers' departments.
Prior to his appointment, he was a prominent barrister, called to the Bar in 1993, took silk in 2009, and served as Head of Chambers at Matrix and a Deputy High Court Judge.
He has been a close friend of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer since 1996, having worked together at the same barristers' chambers.

Lord Hermer has become a central figure in recent political discourse, particularly regarding the rule of law and international legal obligations. The original Sinn F?in organisation was founded in 1905 by Arthur Griffith. Its members founded the revolutionary Irish Republic and its parliament, the First D?il, and many of them were active in the Irish War of Independence, during which the party was associated with the Irish Republican Army (1919-1922). The party split before the Irish Civil War and again in its aftermath, giving rise to the two traditionally dominant parties of Irish politics: Fianna F?il, and Cumann na nGaedheal (which became Fine Gael). For several decades the remaining Sinn F?in organisation was small and often without parliamentary representation. It continued its association with the Irish Republican Army. Another split in 1970 at the start of the Troubles led to the modern Sinn F?in party, with the other faction eventually becoming the Workers' Party.

During the Troubles, Sinn F?in was associated with the Provisional Irish Republican Army. For most of that conflict, it was affected by broadcasting bans in the Irish and British media. Although the party sat on local councils, it maintained a policy of abstentionism for the British House of Commons and the Irish D?il ?ireann, standing for election to those legislatures but pledging not to take their seats if elected. After Gerry Adams became party leader in 1983, electoral politics were prioritised increasingly. In 1986, the party dropped its abstentionist policy for the D?il; some members formed Republican Sinn F?in in protest. In the 1990s, Sinn F?in-under the leadership of Adams and Martin McGuinness-was involved in the Northern Ireland peace process. This led to the Good Friday Agreement and created the Northern Ireland Assembly, and saw Sinn F?in become part of the power-sharing Northern Ireland Executive. In 2006, it co-signed the St Andrews Agreement and agreed to support the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

Sinn F?in is the largest party in the Northern Ireland Assembly, having won the largest share of first-preference votes and the most seats in the 2022 election, the first time an Irish nationalist party has done so. Since 2024, Michelle O'Neill has served as the first ever Irish nationalist First Minister of Northern Ireland. From 2007 to 2022, Sinn F?in was the second-largest party in the Assembly, after the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), and its nominees served as deputy First Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive.

Conor McGregor has assessed his likely competition as he considers running for president in Ireland.

The UFC star has been outspoken in recent weeks about political issues following the stabbing of three children and a carer in Dublin. Riots subsequently broke out in the city when it was claimed the suspect was a foreigner as protestors sang anti-immigrant chants. McGregor's social media posts are being investigated by police for allegedly inciting hate.

McGregor has since accused the authorities of making him a scapegoat, tweeting: "Attempt to scapegoat me all you wish. If it makes you feel better, I will take it." He also released a statement in which he called on the government to act. "I am praying that the streets will remain calm and peaceful. We Irish are known for our beautiful hearts, and we have a proud history of not accepting racism," he said.

"I do strongly believe our leaders must address this issue head-on with serious policy reforms regarding Ireland's immigration and refugee processes. This is not a time for debate and posturing, our elected leaders must act in the best interest of Ireland's citizens and our beloved country's future."

McGregor has often floated the idea of running for office but appears more serious in light of recent events. And taking to social media, he explained why he feels he would be better than the alternative candidates. "Potential competition if I run. Gerry [Adams], 78. Bertie [Ahern]. 75. Enda [Kenny] , 74. Each with unbreakable ties to their individual parties politics. Regardless of what the public outside of their parties feel. These parties govern themselves vs govern the people.

Ireland's Sinn Fein has called for the envoy's expulsion for as long as Israel ignores demands for a ceasefire

Israeli ambassador Dana Erlich "should no longer enjoy diplomatic status in Ireland," Sinn Fein party leader Mary Lou McDonald said on Friday. McDonald's party, which has deep historical ties to the Palestinian cause, has repeatedly condemned Israel's bombardment of Gaza.

"[The Israel Defence Forces] are engaged in a ferocious military offensive against a civilian population; breaking international law by targeting civilians, destroying civilian infrastructure, forcing mass population displacement and cutting off vital supplies of water, food, medicines and fuel," McDonald told reporters.

Erlich's presence in Ireland has become "untenable," McDonald continued, adding that the ambassador should "no longer enjoy diplomatic status in Ireland while Israel refuses the imperative for ceasefires and as the suffering and death toll grow."

Earlier on Friday, McDonald discussed the conflict with diplomats from Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, Morocco, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Israel's embassy in Dublin criticized the Sinn Fein leader for not inviting Erlich to the meeting, accusing her of "only [seeking] to isolate Israel, rather than offer a forum for constructive engagement."

"To exclude Israel from such a forum is quite telling of Sinn Fein's position on the conflict," the embassy said in a statement.

Sinn Fein is Ireland's most popular political party, with a 13-point lead on its closest rival, the centrist Fine Gael. Sinn Fein is excluded from power, however, by a coalition agreement between Fine Gael and historical rivals Fianna Fail, as well as the Green Party.

As the former political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Sinn Fein's support for the Palestinian cause is long-standing. The party's supporters, particularly in Northern Ireland, view their own struggle against British colonialism as analogous to the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation. While the IRA has laid down its arms, Sinn Fein has remained in contact with Hamas; former party leader Gerry Adams met with Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza in 2009, while McDonald hosted an online conference with the militant group's foreign relations head, Dr Basem Naim, in 2020.

The man who will be Barack Obama's Vice-President once described Britain's position in Northern Ireland as "absolutely outrageous".
Joe Biden (65) hit the headlines in the 1980s for his stand against the deportation of IRA suspects from the US to Britain.

In 1985 he told the Senate during a debate on a possible extradition treaty: "If we ratify this treaty, we will be admitting that the justice system in Northern Ireland is fair - a notion I absolutely abhor."

While he condemned IRA murderers, he spoke about the threat to the civil liberties of the IRA killers if they were ever returned to Northern Ireland.

The Delaware Senator, who will be number two at the White House in January, has Northern Irish ancestry.

His grandfather, Ambrose Finnegan, emigrated to the US from Londonderry around 1910. He was one of the hundreds of textile workers who came to work at the DuPont factories.

Just days after his election, US president-elect Barack Obama landed in hot water over his previous involvement in Northern Ireland issues.

A photograph emerged of him with IRA fugitive Rita O'Hare, who is wanted for attempted murder, and Sinn Fein boss Gerry Adams.

The DUP said it will give the man chosen as America's first black president "the benefit of the doubt" over the photo.

Stormont junior minister Jeffrey Donaldson warned that Mr Obama would have to consider such photo opportunities carefully now he is in such a position of authority.

"I do hope that the president-elect will recognise that he must not be partisan in his approach to Northern Ireland," he said.

"I think being photographed with someone like Rita O'Hare demonstrates a lapse of judgment at that time, but hope in his new role these type of mistakes will not be made in the future."

She remains officially at large after fleeing charges of the attempted murder of a soldier in Belfast in 1971. She was shot and seriously wounded in the incident.

While on bail she fled to the Republic where she served a short jail term for an unrelated crime.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it's difficult to run a society in "today's environment" where people "don't even want to hear things we disagree with," which she argues is what's happening in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"The information ecosystem in which we live demands so much quick response, often totally unthought," Clinton said after a discussion at Georgetown University on the legacy of the Good Friday Agreement. "It creates so much insulting, threatening rhetoric aimed at people who are trying to do hard things."

Clinton said there are lessons for today from the Good Friday Agreement, which was signed in April of 1998. The peace agreement brought an end to the violent political conflict that had wracked Northern Ireland for decades.

Clinton mentioned the controversial decision that former President Bill Clinton made to issue a visa to longtime Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams in 1994. According to a BBC report in 2019, Adams said Clinton's decision "helped to pave the way for the IRA truce seven months later."

"You do not make peace with your friends," Clinton said during her speech. "You do not negotiate with people you already agree with. It is sometimes difficult in today's environment for people to want to make the effort, let alone take the risk, to get out of their own comfort zones. We don't even want to hear things we disagree with. We don't want to hear different opinions from people who we have already concluded are outside the pale of our comfort zone.

"You cannot run a society, let alone make peace for long, if that is your ingoing attitude. 'I have nothing to learn from this person. I do not see him/her as a fellow human being. There is no reason for us to talk.' That is what we see happening in Ukraine today."

Clinton told the audience that the "Russian aggression" in Ukraine is "aimed at dehumanizing the Ukrainian people: They are not worthy of existing so why should anybody care whether they are bombed into oblivion?"

She implored the public to find ways to relate to one another in today's complex information environment.

"So we all have to do some serious soul-searching about how we relate to one another in this much more complicated information environment where demonizing and scapegoating are just accepted strategies," she said.

Way back in 1988, nearly three decades ago, Sinn Fein's Foreign Affairs department set in motion a process in America that, in a roundabout way, would become a building block in the then still secret, largely invisible peace process that six years later would produce the first IRA ceasefire and all that followed it, not least Sinn Fein's bid to be in government on both sides of the Border.

Under the direction of SF's Director of Foreign Affairs, Ted Howell - a reticent but enormously influential activist who doubled as chairman of the party's Think Tank, the body that directed the peace process for the SF leadership - two young SF workers were dispatched to the United States to tour Noraid units throughout the country, assess their willingness to embrace a new political role and report back to the Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams.

Although no-one active in the Provisionals' support group could know it then, their mission would mean that Noraid's days were numbered and that within a few years the group's rank and file would largely be left by the wayside and Noraid itself replaced by a body devoted not to anti-British agitation but almost entirely to raising huge sums of money from corporations and America's wealthy to further Sinn Fein's electoral ambitions.

But how all that happened is a most curious tale.

Noraid - or Irish Northern Aid to give the group its proper title - had been formed back in 1970 in the wake of the IRA split to be the public face of Irish republicanism in America. Its principal function was to raise money, ostensibly to support the families of imprisoned or interned Provisional IRA members, and to campaign publicly for British withdrawal from Northern Ireland.

And so it was that in 1988, with doubts simmering in the ranks of Noraid, that Ted Howell dispatched Declan Kearney and Oistin MacBride on a six week tour of Noraid units in ten areas where the organisation was active: New York city & state, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Washington DC, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Noraid is a dig all on it's own - it leads to Tony Blair and The Good Friday Agreement.

Settling into London life, it took me a while to get used to news about bombings, and the innumerable bomb scares which led to delays on the trains and the Tube. But after a while, I became more like the British and grew accustomed to the disruption of The Troubles.

Looking back, my first exposure to the Anglo-Irish conflict came while I was still living in the United States and a British friend told me this story about travelling by train on the east coast of America. She had gone into the train station to purchase a special student-price ticket. The ticket seller, looking at her passport, said I can't sell you this special ticket because you're British.

My friend, confused and a little upset, asked him to explain and he said, all right, I'll sell it to you as long as you say you support the IRA.

That was in Boston, a city long associated with the Irish diaspora in America and a mainstay of one of the principal fund-raising organisations to benefit the Provisional IRA - namely NORAID.

Millions of dollars were given to the Provisional IRA by NORAID, an American political group which openly raised money in Boston and other American cities, often playing on people's ancestral ties to Ireland.

While not everyone in Boston contributed to NORAID, it was done with the blessing and active support of a large proportion of the population including many of the city leaders.

The upper echelons of Boston and other US cities often played host to members of the Provisional IRA such as Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness who travelled to the United States on fund-raising trips.

There is plenty of evidence from the British, Irish and US governments that the money was used to buy weapons including the notorious explosive Semtex which the IRA purchased in large quantities from the Libyan government.

According to the CAIN research project at the University of Ulster, the Provisional IRA killed 1824 people during the three decades of The Troubles, of which 621 were civilians. Murderous attacks included the Guildford pub bombing (5 dead, 54 injured), the Woolwich pub bombing (2 dead, 28 injured), and the Hyde Park and Regents Park bombings in 1982 in which the IRA attacked a parade, killing 11 soldiers and injuring 50 other people.

The Boston Marathon bombing was eerily reminiscent of The Troubles and has made me think again about the links between NORAID, the IRA and terrorism.

Apparently I'm not the only one thinking this either. I have seen comments on a number of websites making similar points.

I also spoke to Patrick Mercer MP, a former infantry officer in the British army who completed nine tours in Northern Ireland. He was also a previous Conservative Party's shadow minister for Homeland Security.

He told me: "I imagine those who live in Boston who have supported violence in the past will be appalled now that it's happened in their midst."

Compassionate people would agree that there is no excuse for terrorism, and by extension, there is no excuse for supporting it.

And yet thousands of Americans, including people who live in Boston, gave millions of dollars to NORAID which was used to buy guns and Semtex and support the Provisional IRA terrorist infrastructure.

Perhaps it is easy to support terrorism when the impact - explosions, deaths and life-changing injuries - isn't on your doorstep. It's easy to support a war when you can romanticise the conflict from a distance, telling yourself it's all about your cultural heritage, especially when you don't have to live with the consequences of bombs and interminable bomb scares.

However, in my view, you cannot draw a distinction between what happened on Monday and the terrorist bombs which targeted so many cities in England. They may be separated in time by 10 or 20 years, but there is no difference.

With a jury having now sentenced Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to death for his role in the bombing of the 2013 Boston Marathon, is it time for the historical misguided popular support for NORAID to, if not publicly, apologise for their actions and to question how different they are in reality to Tsarnaev?

Boris Refuses to Address Question on Biden's Anti-Brexit Position

Boris Johnson refused to address a question on Joe Biden's anti-Brexit position, but praised the prospect of "American global leadership in tackling climate change".

After the media coronation, the British prime minister was eager to congratulate Joe Biden on his alleged victory, despite the results not being official, with vote counts ongoing and President Donald Trump declining to concede, alleging fraud.

Asked to remark on Biden having called Boris Johnson a "physical and emotional clone" of President Trump and for having claimed Brexit was a mistake, the prime minister sidestepped completely, telling The Times: "I think there is far more that unites the government of this country and the government in Washington at any time and any stage than divides us."

He also told the newspaper that he "very much" looks forward to working with "President Biden" in "tackling climate change, trade, international security, many, many other issues".

"With President Biden in the White House... we have the real prospect of American global leadership in tackling climate change," Prime Minister Johnson said.

As you can see from this clip, Biden hates the UK.

The Conservatives had 4 years to do a trade deal with the USA and pro-UK President, and they failed.

There is no chance now.

Mr Johnson's former prime ministerial rival, Sajid Javid, also looks forward to partnering with the Democrat on tackling alleged man-made climate change and supporting the World Health Organization, claiming there was "far more" mutual interest between a notionally conservative British government and a potential Democratic Biden presidency than "there ever was with a Trump administration".

Mr Javid, who had held such high positions in government as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Home Secretary, mentioned that the UK was hosting an upcoming climate summit, telling Sky News on Sunday that "with a new leader in the White House, we'll have someone who will want to work with us to bring about change".

Figures on the British political left were fawning over Biden and his election "win". However, the love appeared not to be reciprocated, with a recent interaction highlighting the hostility that Biden still holds for the UK. When the liberal British Broadcasting Corporation asked Biden for a "quick word" for its viewers, the leftist American politician smirked and responded: "The BBC? I'm Irish."

In response, Reform Party leader Nigel Farage, who is a friend of President Trump, remarked: "As you can see from this clip, Biden hates the UK."

Mr Farage went on to criticise the Conservative government for failing for four years to strike a trade deal with the U.S. under a "pro-UK President", Trump, adding: "There is no chance now."

In September, British politicians had criticised Biden for interfering in UK-EU Brexit negotiations after the Democratic presidential candidate threatened to scupper a U.S.-UK trade deal over a British law safeguarding the Union which Brexit critics perceived to be a threat to the Good Friday agreement.

He has warned Boris Johnson that if Brexit undermines the Good Friday Agreement, there will be no trade deal with the US.

But as Joe Biden inched closer to the White House last night, his own much-trumpeted Irish roots were placed under the spotlight.

It came after a photograph emerged in which his arm is around an IRA fugitive with the pair flanked by Gerry Adams, who, in a potentially incendiary claim, said he discussed a united Ireland with the former vice-president.Taken just three years ago, the image sparked warnings from UK politicians that Mr Biden needs to be more cautious about who he associates with when he becomes President.

Mr Biden has previously spoken with pride about his Irish Catholic roots in his Pennsylvania birthplace, and he travelled to County Mayo in 2016 to visit distant relatives.

However, the notoriously gaffe-prone ex-senator sparked fury the year before when he quipped to an Irish delegation that no one 'wearing orange' was welcome in his house on St Patrick's Day, a comment seen as a slur against Protestants.

Mr Biden was photographed alongside former Sinn Fein president Mr Adams and with his arm around the party's then US representative, Rita O'Hare, in 2017.

In 1972 she was arrested in Northern Ireland for the attempted murder of a British Army officer in Belfast the previous year.

Released on bail, she fled to Dublin where the Irish High Court ruled she should not be extradited to the UK because her alleged offence was 'political'. She is believed to be among almost 200 IRA suspects told they would not face prosecution by Tony Blair's government as part of the Northern Irish peace process.

Irish election result is a victory for Nationalism

Once upon a time Gerry Adams, the leader of Ireland's nationalist party, Sinn Fein, could not be heard speaking on the BBC. He was branded a terrorist and his voice was dubbed. How times have changed. Now his party, led by Mary Lou McDonald, has stormed to victory in the Irish elections. Having won the largest percentage of the vote at 24%, Sinn Fein has ended the decades long domination of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail in what was effectively a two-party political system.

McDonald now seeks to form a government with other left-wing Irish parties and although she doesn't expect to form a coalition with Fine Gael or Fianna Fail, she would still participate in talks with representatives of the parties: "I also have consistently said that I will talk to and listen to everybody, I think that is what grown-ups do and that is what democracy demands."

Fianna Fail's leader, Michael Martin, said however that there were 'significant incompatibilities' to working with Sinn Fein. His party, along with Fine Gael have cited Sinn Fein's previous links to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) - the paramilitary group - as a reason for not working with them. However Mary Lou McDonald has said it is "not sustainable" for either party leader to rule out talks with Sinn Fein. Given the sizeable chunk of the Irish population that voted for her party, you can see she has a fair point.

The Taioseach, Leo Varadkar, has now been forced to admit that Ireland has a three-party system. It may be a marginal win, and one which will force Sinn Fein into a coalition, but it is nevertheless a highly significant turn of events. Although the party won due to its left-wing domestic agenda and promises to combat poverty and rising homelessness, it cannot be ignored that this win is part of a broader, Europe-wide trend. Nationalism is on the rise across Europe, call it populism if you will, but people are increasingly voting for parties which put the nation state first over further European integration. Centrist parties are failing to compete with those offering a nationalist, eurosceptic agenda.

People don't like to be dictated to. The arguably authoritarian decision by state broadcaster RTE not to include Mary Lou Mcdonald in their leaders' debate quite possibly only generated more support for her party. It was reported that prior to the election Sinn Fein sent the broadcaster a legal letter asking it to reverse its decision. The Irish establishment will now have to catch up with the reality that Sinn Fein is now an equal player in the political landscape, and a force to be reckoned with.

The nationalist vibe in the air has now awoken the idea of Irish unity. A poll conducted earlier in 2019 demonstrated that two thirds of Irish people are now supportive of Irish reunification. Of 3000 people questioned, 65% said they were in favour of northern and southern Ireland becoming one nation again. Brexit, which has brought with it a surge in English nationalism, along with a Westminster government increasingly detached from the reality of the everyday struggles of working people, has encouraged more people north and south of the Irish border to rethink their stance on a topic few dared to broach in the past due to the violent conflict between nationalists and unionists. Under the Good Friday Agreement, it is indeed possible for Northern Ireland to secede the United Kingdom if a referendum result were to decide this.

Sinn Fein's stance on the EU is not entirely clear-cut, but the win could be interpreted as a victory for Euroscepticism. The party is against further European integration, campaigned for a 'No' vote in the Irish referendum on joining the European Economic Community in 1972 and criticised the proposal of a European Constitution in 2002. Although it did support Britain remaining in the EU in the run-up to the 2016 EU referendum, it has criticised the European Union in the past for its policies of neoliberalism. When it comes to post-Brexit trade talks with the UK, the new Irish government with Sinn Fein at the helm is likely to take a tougher stance.

In addition, it's likely that under Mary Lou McDonald's leadership, we will see a referendum on Irish unity. If the outcome is for unification, it will put more pressure on a UK government currently facing a real threat from growing Scottish nationalism. As Irish and Scottish nationalist movements gain popularity, the United Kingdom cannot be taken for granted any longer. As elections continue to demonstrate, the status quo is under threat and it's becoming increasingly possible that we will see the dissolution of the United Kingdom within our lifetimes.

A former head of GCHQ resigned from his post after it emerged he gave a character reference to a paedophile priest who went on to reoffend, it has been alleged.

Robert Hannigan was in charge of Britain's surveillance agency for just over two years between 2014 and 2017.

His resignation in January 2017 came out of the blue and surprised security observers. Hannigan, then 51, suggested that he wanted to prioritise his family. In his resignation letter he said his 20-year career as a public servant had "demanded a great deal of my ever patient and understanding family and now is the right time for a change in direction".

The Mail on Sunday has reported that the real reason was his involvement in the case of Father Edmund Higgins, a Catholic priest and family friend. Sources close to the case have confirmed to The Guardian that this is the case.

The Mail on Sunday said Hannigan had given a character reference for Higgins, a parish priest in Richmond, in 2013 after he had admitted possession of child abuse images sent to him via online chatrooms. Higgins was spared jail when the judge at Isleworth crown court gave him a suspended prison sentence.

Higgins, now with the name Edmund Black, was sentenced to 31 months in jail in June last year after he pleaded guilty to charges involving child abuse images. The court heard that the former priest would watch and share child abuse videos, including one that involved a baby.

The Mail on Sunday reports that it was during the National Crime Agency investigation into online chatrooms that Higgins and his links to Hannigan were discovered and No 10 was alerted. Hannigan reportedly offered to resign to avoid dragging GCHQ into a scandal and did so with Theresa May's blessing.

The media was told that his resignation was mainly for family health reasons.

Hannigan told the newspaper that Higgins had been a close family friend for 20 years. "After he pleaded guilty to child sexual imagery offences in 2013, we submitted a character reference on our knowledge of him to the court in good faith.

"His subsequent criminal actions appalled us and have shown that our judgment was completely wrong. When I later became director of GCHQ, all the correct steps were taken in relation to my involvement in this case and this was verified by government lawyers. This is a personal family matter. We will not be making further comment."

While at GCHQ, Hannigan led a push to make the agency more transparent. The then foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, praised him for setting the groundwork for a transformation of Britain's cyber defences.

Before taking charge of the agency Hannigan had occupied a number of important roles in the civil service.

While at the Northern Ireland office from 2005 to 2007 he was a key adviser to Tony Blair during negotiations between republicans and unionists, coming up with the idea of a diamond-shaped table so Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley could be close to each other without being side by side.

He later advised Gordon Brown on intelligence and security, and in 2010 became director general for defence and intelligence at the Foreign Office.

The Tablet listed him as the third most powerful lay Catholic in Britain in 2015, reporting that he had trained as a priest at the Allen Hall seminary in Chelsea.

Since GCHQ, Hannigan has worked in the private sector as European chairman and global head of strategy at the cybersecurity company BlueVoyant.

The controversy around Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams being denied entry to the White House's St Patrick's Day party on Tuesday was yesterday escalated up to President Barack Obama's most senior aide and the US Secret Service director.

Mr Obama's chief of staff, Denis McDonough, told US congressmen Richard Neal and Joe Crowley by telephone yesterday that he was going to ask US secretary of homeland security Jeh Johnson and a representative of the State Department to investigate what happened.

In a separate telephone call with the two Irish-American politicians yesterday, the director of the Secret Service, Joseph Clancy, "apologised profusely" for what had happened to the Sinn Féin leader.

Mr Adams had to wait for 90 minutes outside the annual party over what the Secret Service described as an "administrative input error".

He decided to leave when it became clear the problem would not be resolved. The Secret Service later expressed regret over the incident.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan welcomed the explanation from the agency but criticised Mr Adams for drawing a parallel with civil rights leader Rosa Parks in reacting to the incident.

Mr Adams responded by saying that Sinn Féin would "not sit at the back of the bus for anyone", drawing a parallel with Parks's refusal in 1955 to relinquish her seat on a bus for one in a "coloured" section at the back.

During his St Patrick's Day visit to New York, Mr Flanagan said he did not believe the comparison was "appropriate".

Taoiseach Enda Kenny, on a visit to a summit of EU leaders in Brussels, described Parks as "an international icon, a woman of courage and bravery who made a real mark on history for its benefit".

"I'm not going to comment on the difficulties with Deputy Adams getting into the White House, " he said, adding that everyone was "treated the same going into the White House - security is absolutely stringent".

The conversations between the congressmen and the senior Obama aides occurred after they raised concerns about the incident in a letter from 10 members of the Friends of Ireland caucus of congressman.

'A typo'
Mr McDonough told Mr Neal that the incident may have arisen as a result of "a typo" in inputting Mr Adams's personal details. Mr Neal said he and Mr Crowley explained "the political and the security implications" of the incident to Mr Clancy in their call.

The director took full responsibility for what happened and promised it would not happen again, the Massachusetts congressman said.

Mr Neal told The Irish Times about the incident's significance given that the Clinton administration granting of a visa to Mr Adams in 1994 was "one of the critical moments" in the Northern Ireland peace process. "If you are standing outside of the White House and everybody is going past you, the situation is not likely to land well," he said.

Mr Crowley said the Obama administration was aware of the "unintended consequences of this unfortunate event".

"They understand the optics of this and want to avoid anything like this from happening again," said the New York congressman. "It was not intended."

"Mr Clinton opened the centre in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh on the site of the 1987 Remembrance Sunday bombing. The IRA killed 11 people and injured 63 more gathered beside the town's cenotaph for that year's service. A 12th victim, Ronnie Hill, died in December 2000 after spending 13 years in a coma.

The Clinton Centre has been named in tribute to the ex-president's efforts for international peace and in recognition of his special role in helping the divided Northern Ireland community towards the Good Friday Agreement. He was to be joined by First Minister Mr David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Mr Mark Durkan. However, Mr Trimble has travelled to London to meet British prime minister Mr Tony Blair over the ongoing sectarian clashes in Belfast.

Mr Clinton last visited Enniskillen in May last year, when he met families bereaved in the bombing and unveiled an inscription on a memorial window of the Peace Centre, which is dedicated to the victims of the blast.

As Mr Clinton arrived at the building, police forcibly removed one of those injured in the bombing from the entrance to the centre and frogmarched him across the road. Mr Jim Dixon was protesting that victims of the bombing had no role in the establishment of the centre. "Victims have had no input, but they are using the victims to get money for it," he claimed."
