Gayle Manchin nominated to be federal co-chair of Appalachian Regional Commission
March 26, 2021
Gayle Manchin, an educator and wife of Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, has been nominated to serve as the federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, the White House said in a news release Friday.
The commission is an economic development partnership agency of the federal government and 13 state governments working toward strengthening economic growth in Appalachia. Manchin previously served as West Virginia's secretary of education and the arts. She was fired from that position by Republican Gov. Jim Justice after she issued a statement calling on the governor to veto legislation that would eliminate the state's Office of Education and the Arts and offered to resign. She served as West Virginia's first lady from 2005 to 2010 when her husband was governor of the state. Manchin was appointed to serve on the on the West Virginia board of education from 2007 to 2015 and was the board's president for the last two years.
Manchin directed the AmeriCorps Promise Fellows in the state and is the chair of an American Federation of Teachers initiative serving rural West Virginia, the Board for Reconnecting McDowell, Inc., according to the White House. A longtime educator, Manchin has worked in Marion County Schools, was a faculty member at Fairmont State University and was the director of the university's first community service learning program, the White House said in the statement.
Her husband, Joe Manchin, is a moderate Democrat whose support is critical to the White House in a Senate that is split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans. If Manchin or other Democratic senators break with the White House on certain initiatives, it could limit the scope of Biden's agenda.

Biden Nominates Sen. Manchin's Wife For Federal Commission
Joe Biden selected Sen. Joe Manchin's (D-W.Va.) wife to help lead a federal panel tasked with increasing investment in the Appalachian Region.
The White House announced Gayle Manchin's nomination to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission on Friday.

The panel is an economic development agency involving 13 state governors and aimed at boosting job creation, among other issues.
Given it's even split, Joe Manchin is considered one of the most pivotal votes in the Senate.
Though the White House has cited Gayle Manchin's education and career as the reason for her nomination, critics have suggested it may be a strategic way to get her husband on board with more Democrat agendas in Congress.

China Hits US & Canadian Officials With More Counter-Sanctions
On Saturday China unleashed its next round of tit-for-tat sanctions following Monday's coordinated human rights abuse related sanctions announced by the US, EU, UK, and Canada. As was forewarned, these newest sanctions target Canada, but also includes more American officials.
The AFP details, "Two members of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Gayle Manchin and Tony Perkins, as well as Canadian MP Michael Chong and a Canadian parliamentary committee on human rights are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau," as listed by the Chinese foreign ministry.
Along with the new punitive counter-measures the foreign ministry repeated its earlier assertion that the US and Canada imposed sanctions on Beijing officials on Monday "based on rumors and disinformation."
The sanctioned individuals within the Canadian and US governments "must stop political manipulation on Xinjiang-related issues, stop interfering in China's internal affairs in any form," the ministry added, noting that they are now banned from conducting any business with Chinese companies or individuals.
"Otherwise, they will get their fingers burnt," the statement warned threateningly.
China's immediate response following this week's punitive measures from the Western allies based on the Xinjiang allegations - which center on China's network of 'reeducation' camps and labor prisons - was to call it a mere "a pretext for interfering in China's internal affairs and frustrate China's development."
"People of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang, including the Uyghurs, enjoy each and every constitutional and lawful right. The fact that Xinjiang residents of various ethnic groups enjoy stability, security, development and progress, makes it one of the most successful human rights stories," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying had claimed in an official statement.
There's likely more anti-Canada action to come, given multiple members of Canadian parliament have been extremely vocal of late in calling for greater punishment against Beijing, including the Boycotting of the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin's wife and a colleague of hers have both been hospitalized following a car accident in Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin's wife and a colleague of hers have both been hospitalized following a car crash in Alabama.
Gayle Manchin, 76, and Guy Land were injured Monday in the accident which happened in Birmingham as they traveled from the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to an area hotel, Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said in a statement Tuesday.
"On Monday, my wife Gayle and her colleague Guy Land were involved in a car accident on the way from the airport to the hotel in Birmingham, Alabama for an Appalachian Regional Commission event that was planned for today,'' the senator said.
"Both were admitted to UAB Hospital and are receiving excellent care. She remains in stable condition but will stay there for a couple of days for precautionary measures. We want to thank the first responders who answered the call and were first on-site to provide assistance and support."
Gayle Manchin is the federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission and was in Birmingham with Land, the ARC's congressional liaison, for a grant workshop.
ARC said in a statement that another vehicle struck their car while they were driving to attend the event. Land's injuries were not disclosed, but the commission said both he and Mrs. Manchin "are receiving excellent care at a UAB facility as they recover."
A telephone call to Birmingham Police for details about the crash was not immediately returned Tuesday.
Manchin was the governor of West Virginia from 2005 until 2010, when he was elected to the Senate. The couple have been married since 1967 and have three children.
Gayle Manchin, a former educator, served as president of the West Virginia Board of Education and as the state's secretary of education and the arts under Republican Gov. Jim Justice. She was sworn in as the Appalachian Regional Commission's 13th federal co-chair in 2021 after being nominated by President Joe Biden.
