Progress Towards Reforming the UAW
Acting U.S. Attorney Saima S. Mohsin announced that progress has been made towards reforming the International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Workers of America ("UAW"). The UAW represents over 400,000 active members and over 580,000 retired members in more than 600 local unions across the United States.
Previously, numerous high-level officials of the UAW had been the subject of criminal prosecutions based on fraud, corruption, embezzlement, and labor law violations. These prosecutions had resulted in the criminal convictions of two UAW Presidents, Gary Jones and Dennis Williams, two UAW Vice Presidents, Joseph Ashton and Norwood Jewell, as well as seven other senior UAW officials.

Peters Silent on UAW Corruption Arrests
Union is one of Michigan Dem's largest donors
Sen. Gary Peters (D., Mich.) has remained silent on whether he will return the thousands of dollars in donations that he received from the United Auto Workers after federal authorities arrested the union's top leaders for corruption.
UAW's PAC has donated more than $105,000 to Peters's joint-fundraising committee. The committee in turn funneled $71,200 to Peters's campaign and $278,800 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to financial disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission. The PAC's donation made up roughly one-in-four dollars raised by the joint-fundraising committee, making the union by far the largest donor to the entity.
Peters's campaign did not respond to a Washington Free Beacon inquiry about whether the senator will return the funds in light of recent revelations about widespread corruption within the union, which has so far led to guilty pleas from at least 11 union officials, including Gary Jones, the union's former president.
Peters has a long history of working closely with UAW leaders, many of whom are now going to jail for embezzling union funds, conspiracy, and other acts of corruption. Former UAW president Dennis Williams, who served in that position from 2014 to 2018, endorsed Peters during his first Senate run in 2014 and personally appeared in a rally to support his candidacy. Since then, a wide-ranging FBI probe found that Williams used union funds to pay for his personal expenses, including boxes of cigars and high-end alcohol. Peters's campaign continued to accept tens of thousands of dollars in donations from union coffers even after the FBI went public with corruption indictments against senior labor officials beginning in 2019.
Peters is in a hotly contested Senate race against Republican challenger John James. James, previously considered a long-shot candidate by election observers, has narrowed the gap with the incumbent in the last few months of the race, trailing Peters by only one point in the latest polling. The six-figure donations from the union are helping Peters edge out a slight fundraising advantage over his rival. The Michigan senator has raised nearly $22 million to James's $20 million.

Labor Watchdog Calls on Biden to Repudiate 'Corrupt' Union Ally
Ex-UAW leaders have admitted to bribery, corruption charges
A labor watchdog group is urging presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden to reject the support he's received from corrupt union leaders after a top party ally pleaded guilty to embezzlement in June.
National Right to Work Committee president Mark Mix sent a letter to Biden on Thursday, calling on the Democrat to "put the rights of workers above the demands of union bosses" and "disavow the support" from top brass at the United Auto Workers union. Just weeks earlier, former UAW president Gary Jones pleaded guilty to embezzlement, racketeering, and tax evasion. Jones, a prominent Democratic ally, admitted to spending more than $1 million in union funds on miscellaneous luxuries such as premium cigars and liquor, fine dining, vacation rentals, golf outings, and clothing. The union endorsed Biden in April, prior to Jones's guilty plea.
"It seems as though UAW officials are deliberately stalling in a clinical ploy to 'run out the clock' on the Trump Justice Department, in the hopes that your administration will let them off the hook," Mix's letter states. "It is no surprise, therefore, that these same union bosses are currently spending millions to get you elected."
The UAW is still under investigation after a federal probe into the union began more than five years ago. The investigation has led to the convictions of at least 11 top union officials, including former UAW vice president and DNC delegate Norwood Jewell, who admitted to receiving illegal benefits from Fiat Chrysler executives.
Biden has repeatedly praised the union throughout the probe, saying he was "proud to stand with UAW" as GM employees went on strike in September 2019. Nine union officials had admitted wrongdoing at the time, including former Region 5 director Vance Pearson, who participated in negotiations with GM days before attending a Missouri federal court hearing. Pearson pleaded guilty to embezzlement in February. The UAW has spent more than $2.3 million on legal fees stemming from the investigation, its latest Labor Department filing shows.
Top Democrats on the House Committee on Education and Labor ignored Republican calls to investigate the union in November. Democrats on the committee have taken more than $300,000 in UAW money, and Biden accepted at least $10,000 in direct contributions from the union as a member of Congress. UAW leaders have given more than $4.25 million to Democrats since the FBI's corruption investigation began in 2015.

Top Dem Ally Pleads Guilty to Embezzlement
Ex-UAW president cops to corruption charges
Former United Auto Workers president Gary Jones, a top ally to Democrats at both the state and national levels, pleaded guilty to embezzlement on Wednesday.
Jones admitted to using more than $1 million in union funds on various extravagances, including clothing, golf outings and equipment, vacation rentals, liquor, fine dining, and premium cigars. The union-which is still under investigation after a federal probe began more than five years ago-endorsed presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden in April and has spent big backing Democrats in recent years.
In the 2018 cycle alone, the UAW's political action committee gave $200,000 to the Michigan Democratic Party and $68,000 to Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer's (D.) campaign. Disgraced former UAW vice president Norwood Jewell, who admitted to receiving illegal benefits from Fiat Chrysler executives, served as a party superdelegate in 2016 and remained listed as a party leader following his guilty plea. The union has also continued to support Whitmer through her controversial handling of the coronavirus pandemic, calling her a "leading voice" who has been at all times "inclusive and focused on building a consensus to do what is right for the health and safety of UAW members" in a May statement.
The union also gave $10,000 to Sen. Gary Peters (D., Mich.) prior to his election in 2014 and has since contributed $1,000,000 to Senate Majority PAC in the 2020 cycle, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.), the PAC launched an ad in March attacking Republican Senate hopeful John James, who has outraised the embattled Michigan Democrat for three consecutive quarters. UAW also gave $105,000 to Michigan Senate Victory 2020, a joint fundraising committee that supports both Peters and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.
The PAC, Biden, Whitmer, and Peters did not respond to requests for comment.
Despite the ongoing investigation, both Peters and Biden praised the union as GM employees went on strike in September 2019. Nine UAW officials had already admitted to wrongdoing at the time, and former Region 5 director Vance Pearson attended negotiations with the auto giant just days before he was scheduled to attend a federal court hearing in Missouri. Pearson went on to plead guilty to embezzlement in February.
Michigan Republican Party chairwoman Laura Cox celebrated Jones's plea, accusing Democrats of turning a blind eye to the union's corruption for years.

Former United Auto Workers President Gary Jones on Wednesday pleaded guilty to helping steal more than $1 million from rank-and-file workers as part of a racketeering scheme.
Jones, 63, faces up to five years in federal prison but prosecutors have agreed to recommend a sentence of up to 57 months in prison because he is cooperating with an ongoing corruption investigation. During a brief tenure leading one of the nation's largest and most powerful unions, and despite touting himself as a reform-minded president, Jones' criminal conduct has helped push the UAW to the brink of federal takeover .

General Motors not a target in UAW corruption probe
WASHINGTON: General Motors Co is not a target in the Justice Department's investigation into corruption within the United Auto Workers union, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit said on Friday.
GM said earlier Friday that media reports suggesting GM might be a focus of a "newer front in the years long criminal investigation" being conducted by federal prosecutors in Detroit are "not true."
"A letter was sent to GM's counsel this week stating that GM is not a target," a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Federal prosecutors have charged 14 people in the wide-ranging anti-corruption probe, including former UAW President Gary Jones who resigned in November, and a former Fiat Chrysler vice president and a company financial analyst. Of those, 13 have pleaded guilty.
Jones has a June 3 plea hearing set.
Last year, GM sued Fiat Chrysler charging its rival with bribing UAW officials to gain advantages in 2009 and 2015 labor contracts and have the UAW withhold those terms from GM. GM said Fiat Chrysler's actions put it at a multibillion dollar labor cost disadvantage.

Has anyone noticed the "Standard" text on VW.com? Image related. Is this setting the stage? Are we over the target?
VW has to broadcast government propaganda for electric vehicles and other alternative energy solutions as part of the diesel settlement. I wonder if they were told to broadcast this as well.
Has anyone reported that the President of UAW was arrested this week and that the UAW may be taken over by the government on a temporary basis? This is a major story that is under reported.

Ex-UAW president Gary Jones charged in corruption probe
Federal prosecutors have charged Gary Jones, the former head of the UAW, in the corruption probe.
The charges, which accuse Jones, among other things, of conspiring to embezzle union funds and aiding racketeering activity, were unsealed Thursday. They were filed as an information in U.S. District Court in Detroit, meaning Jones is expected to plead guilty.
Jones resigned in disgrace last year after he was implicated in federal court papers which said he was one of several top union officials who had embezzled more than a million dollars and spent it on meals, cigars and other lavish goodies.
The paperwork charging Jones was actually filed on Feb. 27 but kept under seal. That was just days before Jones' former aide Edward "Nick" Robinson pleaded guilty in the case and agreed to cooperate.

UAW moves to expel 8 members convicted in corruption probe
The UAW on Friday said it took action to expel eight members who have faced charges in the government's ongoing U.S. corruption probe of the union. All but one of the members have pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges.
The eight officials facing the UAW's so-called Article 31 charges include Norwood Jewell, a former vice president and head of the UAW-FCA department who pleaded guilty in April of last year to violating the Labor Management Relations Act and is currently serving a 15-month prison term, as well as Joe Ashton, a former vice president and head of the UAW-GM department who pleaded guilty in December to money laundering and wire fraud and awaits sentencing.
The union also filed charges against Edward "Nick" Robinson, Nancy Johnson, Jeffrey Pietrzyk, Michael Grimes, Keith Mickens and Virdell King. All have been charged in the years-long scandal, which to date has resulted in charges against 13 people, and 11 have pleaded guilty.
"Any UAW member who uses their position to break the law or blatantly violates the sacred oath they took to faithfully serve our members will be subject to removal from their post and expulsion from our union," President Rory Gamble said in a statement.
"My administration, and the entire Executive Board, will continue to hold accountable those who commit criminal conduct or serious violations of our Ethical Practices Code. And we will continue to aggressively implement the critical reforms necessary to strengthen our union's financial controls, oversight and overall accounting system to ensure the type of conduct described in these charges will not reoccur."
The Article 31 charges were signed by every member of the union's International Executive Board. They claim that those charged "engaged in serious misconduct in violation of the law and the Ethical Practices Code of the UAW constitution."
The move would expel the members from the union, and they would forfeit most benefits, although a spokesman said the union does not have the power to strip their pensions.
The union late last year moved to expel former President Gary Jones and former Region 5 Director Vance Pearson by filing Article 30 charges against them, although both resigned their positions and union membership before a trial could begin. Jones has not been accused of wrongdoing, while Pearson is expected to plead guilty in court next week.
The eight people facing Article 31 charges now face a UAW trial in the coming weeks. According to the union's constitution, a seven-person trial committee will be selected, and if two-thirds of the committee finds the accused guilty, they can be expelled from the union.

Embattled union honchos' lavish spending exposed: Villas, four-figure dinners, $60,000 cigar bill
Work hard, play hard – and on the union's dime.
That might as well have been the motto for some former top officials at the United Automobile Workers, whose lavish spending on luxuries including high-end cigars, four-figure dining and California villas has been exposed in painstaking detail by federal prosecutors.
It's a case that threatens to cause serious problems for top auto union bosses, including Gary Jones, who resigned as president last month under pressure. A complaint filed in September in Michigan federal court against union leader Vance Pearson refers to several unnamed individuals, but union officials have told the New York Times that one of them, UAW "Official A," is, in fact, Jones, whose home was raided by federal agents.
And Official A's wild expenses are all over the court documents, allegedly including $13,000 at a cigar store.
"A December 2015 Gary's Sales invoice issued to 'UAW c/o [UAW Official A]' for a $13,046.91 purchase that included an order for 12 boxes of Ashton Double Magnum cigars at $268.00 per box (totaling $3,216) and 12 boxes of Ashton Monarch Tubos cigars at $274.50 a box (totaling $3,294)," was among the purchases listed in court documents. The documents listed another $13,000 purchase invoiced to Pearson from the same store the following year, part of an alleged $60,000 on cigar- and tobacco-related purchases between 2014 and 2018.

U.S. prosecutor calls on UAW to cooperate, probe may widen
DETROIT (Reuters) - The U.S. Attorney leading the investigation of corruption within the United Auto Workers (UAW) told Reuters on Friday the union's leadership still is not fully cooperating with the government, but that individuals are giving federal investigators tips that could expand the probe. "The deadline is now" for UAW leadership to be more open with investigators looking into corruption within the union, Matthew Schneider, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan said in an interview.
Schneider said a federal takeover of the UAW is among the options available, but the government's investigation of individuals linked to misuse of union funds and other impropriety is his priority. With more tips of possible UAW wrongdoing coming in from the public, Schneider said "we just don't know" how long it will take to finish the investigation. The UAW earlier this month installed Rory Gamble, former top union official at Ford Motor Co, as its new president after Gary Jones resigned. Jones has not been charged with wrongdoing, but federal agents searched his home this summer.
Schneider said the union's so-called Article 30 document outlining the case for Jones' removal as president contained information the Justice Department did not know. "Reading the Article 30 charges and seeing information we didn't know about, that's not open and genuine cooperation," Schneider said. "They're saying we'll respond to any question we're asked. That's not cooperation. Cooperation is much more than that." The UAW in a statement Friday said it is "disappointing that Mr. Schneider does not yet recognize the UAW's sincere efforts at reform." Citing financial reforms announced Dec. 2, the union said that as recently as two weeks ago it had "expressed a willingness to further work with the government on the issues of concern. And we continue to cooperate in providing the government any and all records requested."
General Motors Co earlier this month filed a civil racketeering suit against rival Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, charging that Fiat Chrysler executives bribed UAW officials in order to win labor cost advantages over GM. GM cited evidence from the Justice Department investigation in its brief. Fiat Chrysler has said it will fight GM's charges and characterized them as an effort to slow the proposed merger of Fiat Chrysler and French automaker Peugeot SA. The GM-Fiat Chrysler litigation does not affect the federal criminal investigation, Schneider said.

BP and partners sanction Caspian Sea project worth $6 billion
The $6 billion worth Azeri Central East (ACE) project, the next stage of development of the giant ACG field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea, has been sanctioned.
The investment decision follows an agreement with the Government of Azerbaijan to extend the life of the ACG field until 2049. ACG is a super-giant field and to date more than 3.5 billion barrels (474 million tonnes) of oil have been produced from the field. The oil is exported to world markets, primarily via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Western Route Export pipelines.
The project has been sanctioned by the Steering Committee for the development of the Azeri and Chirag fields and the Deep Water portion of the Gunashli (ACG) field - including SOCAR, BP, Chevron, INPEX, Equinor, ExxonMobil, TPAO, ITOCHU, and ONGC Videsh.
The $6 billion development includes a new offshore platform and facilities designed to process up to 100,000 barrels of oil per day. The project is expected to achieve first production in 2023 and produce up to 300 million barrels over its lifetime, BP said on Friday.
The sanction is the first major investment decision by the ACG partnership since the extension of the ACG production sharing agreement (PSA) to 2049 was agreed in 2017. More than $36 billion has been invested into the development of the ACG area since the original PSA was signed in 1994.
Construction activities to create up to 8,000 jobs
Construction activities, which will start this year and run through mid-2022, will take place in-country utilizing local resources. It is expected that, at peak, construction activities will create up to 8,000 jobs.
Rovnaq Abdullayev, president of SOCAR, said: "Today's sanctioning marks yet another important milestone in the development of ACG for the benefit of the nation, which began 25 years ago with the signing of the Contract of the Century.
"For decades, SOCAR has been reinvesting Azerbaijan's oil revenues in the development of a highly qualified workforce and modern industrial facilities in our country."
He added: "Looking forward, we expect more than 3 billion barrels of additional oil production from ACG. This strategic decision supports Azerbaijan's increasing role as an energy supplier for the regional and global markets."
BP chief executive Bob Dudley said: "Working together over the past 25 years, this remarkable partnership has turned these world-class assets into tremendous benefits for the people of Azerbaijan. The ACE extension builds on that legacy and helps ensure that the next quarter century will be just as bright."
Gary Jones, BP's regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, added: "Today's announcement supports the long-term production plans we set for ACG when we extended the PSA. It demonstrates our commitment to work with SOCAR and Azerbaijan's Government to continue to unlock ACG's resources more efficiently and competitively."
The Azeri Central East (ACE) project is centered on a new 48-slot production, drilling and quarters platform located mid-way between the existing Central Azeri and East Azeri platforms in a water depth of approximately 140 meters. The project will also include new infield pipelines to transfer oil and gas from the ACE platform to the existing ACG Phase 2 oil and gas export pipelines for transportation to the onshore Sangachal Terminal.
In addition, there will be a water injection pipeline installed between the East Azeri and ACE platforms to supply injection water from the Central Azeri compression and water injection platform to the ACE facilities.

UAW president vows to take on Detroit carmakers
DETROIT - UAW President Gary Jones promised to put the Detroit 3 auto companies "on the defensive" and "take this fight to them," as his team began private meetings to shape priorities to be presented during contract talks this year.
Striking is a real possibility for the union, which represents about 156,000 workers employed by General Motors, Ford Motor Co., and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, he emphasized. Nearly 4,000 work for GM in Spring Hill.
"We're going into the bargaining session using every tool to protect the rights and wages of our members," Jones said. "We will do what we need to do. We will use every ounce of our leverage, every last ounce."

OKLAHOMA FUCKERY - EPA DIRECTOR USED TO BE OK AG
Oklahoma fired 200 people fall 2017 from OK Department of Health & Human services because $30M went missing and they couldn't make payroll.
Gary Jones - State Auditor/running for OK Governor - offered to help get to the bottom of it and do an audit with OK AG.
Well…the results of the audit is now out. Allegedly no money was missing…it was just a slush fund that people didn't understand and no one is being criminally charged at the State level. They are now 400 people short in the OK Department of Health and Human services. Feds are allegedly investigating and I think they still have to come to their conclusions.
