WASHINGTON - The suspicion of investigators that one ofPresident Clinton's closest friends might have been given high-paying jobs in exchange for his silenceis emerging as one of the most intriguing controversies dogging the president.

Disclosures that two of Clinton's most trusted aides, Counselor Thomas "Mack" McLarty and Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles, tried to line up employment for former Justice Department official Webster Hubbell in 1994 have reviveddark memories of Watergate-era "hush money" paymentsto protect President Richard Nixon.

McLarty and Bowles say they were motivated by sympathy for an old friend in trouble and didn't know at the time that a Whitewater independent counsel was investigating Hubbell for bilking his former law firm when he resigned as the No. 3 Justice Department official.

President Clinton backed them up Thursday, saying both men acted out of "human compassion" and did nothing improper.

Nonetheless, McLarty has received a subpoena from independent counsel Kenneth Starr, The Associated Press reported Thursday. Sources told the AP that Bowles also was expected to be subpoenaed soon. Both intend to cooperate, officials said.

Hubbell himself offered new details Thursday, telling the AP that he lied to Clinton during a Camp David, Md., meeting shortly after his resignation and denied the independent counsel's charges against him.

"The president asked me if I'd done something wrong," Hubbell said. "And I didn't tell him the truth."

What prosecutors may suspect to be true in "hush-money" cases often is not brought to trial for a simple reason: They are notoriously hard cases to prove.

While the efforts of McLarty and Bowles on Hubbell's behalf might raise questions about their motives, an array of criminal lawyers said that the facts so far fall short of constituting a crime.

"Based on the facts as we know them, there is absolutely no hush-money, obstruction-of-justice case here," said Dan Webb, a former U.S. attorney in Chicago. "It is not even a close call."

Cost of IRS funding repeal? More than $100 billion, says this watchdog

House Republicans' plans to repeal billions of dollars of funding for the Internal Revenue Service would boost the U.S.'s red ink by more than $100 billion over the next decade, a budget watchdog estimated Monday, as the GOP was gearing up to vote on the measure.

A vote could come as early as Monday night on a measure that takes aim at $80 billion in extra funding for the IRS that was included in Democrats' Inflation Reduction Act - their big climate, healthcare and tax package. The vote could follow action on a package of rules for the new session of Congress - to which which some Republicans have voiced opposition.

The aim of the extra money for the IRS is to expand support for the agency's operations, modernize its systems, improve customer service, and strengthen tax enforcement, as the Committee for a Responsible Budget summarized in a new analysis Monday.

Denying the agency the funding, says the CRFB, would increase deficits by well over $100 billion over a decade, including $30 billion in 2031 alone.

The IRS measure is one of a few items that House Republicans are prioritizing as they get down to business in the new Congress. Because Democrats control the Senate, however, it won't pass that chamber, so the bill is largely symbolic.

Still, campaigning against the IRS featured heavily in Republicans' midterm election pitches, with candidates warning that Democrats' legislation will empower about 87,000 new agents to target middle-income Americans. That figure has been dubbed misleading, however, by fact-checkers including the Associated Press, which noted many hires will be used to replace some 50,000 IRS employee retirements in coming years. Others will become customer service representatives answering taxpayer phone calls.

Analyst: DoJ, FBI Lock up Trump Allies, Forget About Clinton Foundation's Pay-to-Play Schemes

Although the DoJ and FBI are actively chasing Donald Trump's supporters, they have never demonstrated a similar hardball approach when it came to the Clintons and other establishment politicians, says Wall Street analyst Charles Ortel, who has investigated the Clinton Foundation's alleged fraud for several years.

On 20 July, Thomas J. Barrack, a billionaire businessman and longtime friend to former president Donald Trump, was arrested in Los Angeles being charged with illegal lobbying for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between April 2016 and April 2018. The indictment also charged Barrack with "obstruction of justice and making multiple false statements during a 20 June 2019 interview with federal law enforcement agents." The businessman pleaded not guilty on 26 July.

Barrack is the second Trump ally to be arrested this month. Previously, the Trump Organisation and CFO Allen Weisselberg were charged with 15 counts relating to an alleged tax fraud scheme on 1 July. Like Barrack, Weisselberg pleaded not guilty.

Anti-Trump Resistance Continues

The recent arrests show that the anti-Trump "resistance" campaign launched in 2015 never ended, according to Charles Ortel, a Wall Street analyst and investigative journalist. The DoJ and FBI were quick to indict and detain many of the former president's loyalists; however, when it came to prominent establishment figures, like the Clintons or their associates, the US justice machine appeared to be completely out of whack, he believes.

"My working theory is that globalists have had an excellent thing going ever since 1989," Ortel says. "Multilateral aid organisations and false-front, 'leaky' charities are not regulated, so they serve as prime conduits to pay off corrupt national government officials, to pad operating budgets of clandestine agencies, to launder dirty money and to subsidise champagne and caviar lifestyles that co-conspirators could never afford from legitimately earned income."

Ortel, who has been investigating the Clinton Foundation's alleged fraud for several years, presumes that Trump and his allies "pose existential threats to globalists who are pulling strings at crooked foundations" as Team Trump may, potentially, return to the helm of the country and strip the establishment of many powers.

'Overspending'$23Million [COMMS?]

The Wall Street analyst referred to an episode involving the Clinton Foundation, which remains largely unnoticed in the media and was reported by Australian investigative journalist Michael Smith in November 2016. In his op-ed, Smith referred to an email sent by Erskine Bowles, an American businessman who served as Bill Clinton's chief of staff, to his former boss on 17 February 2015. The email discusses documents related to the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and allegedly "lost" $23 million of restricted grants…

According to Smith, the "CHAI overspending" rings alarm bells: he wondershow the non-profit and tax-exempt organisation "lost" $23 million of restricted grant moneyso that it had to be "bailed out." The Australian journalist did not rule out that the aforementioned funds were "misused."…

By 2003, however, Bill Clinton and Ira Magaziner started issuing press releases announcingmassive government grantsfrom nations includingIreland, Canada, Norway, Australia and others,according to Ortel…

However, unlike Trump associates, the Clintons and their charities have never been properly investigated and brought to justice, although there's enough evidence, including in public domain, deserving IRS, DoJ and FBI's attention, according to Ortel.

"The goal of many globalists is to run large swaths of the world for their own benefit, immune from prosecution, and free to persecute rivals and opponents," he says. "A core tactic is to erode the integrity and performance of national governments, so that globalist approaches seem preferable in the minds of the public."

Obama Administration Ties

Despite claiming to reject ideology,the top echelon of the organization includes alumni from Democratic President Barack Obama's administration. New America CEO Anne-Marie Slaughter served the administration as director of policy planning for the State Department from 2009 to 2011, working under then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She was previously the dean of Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs from 2002 to 2009. [9]

Slaughter took the helm of the organization in 2013. During a 2018 interview with Politico, she seemed to advocate for Democratic victories in the midterm elections:[10]

New America president and chief operating officer Tyra A. Mariani previously served as the chief of staff at the Department of Education during the Obama administration. [11]

Cecilia Munoz is the think tank's vice president for public interest technology and local initiatives. Munoz served for eight years on President Obama's senior staff, first as Director of Intergovernmental Affairs followed by five years as Director of the Domestic Policy Council. Before working for the Obama White House, she was the senior vice president for UnidosUS (then the National Council of La Raza), an organization that supports granting legal status to illegal immigrants. In 2009, at the start of the Obama administration, thethink tank began getting federal contracts with the State Departmentto help development wireless networks for dissidents in Iran, Syria, Libya, and Cuba. This raised concerns among alumni of the organization who felt it could inhibit the group's independence from government. [13]

Even a conservative-sounding division-Fix the Debt-had an Obama connection. Fix the Debt became a division of the New America Foundation in 2012, with the former Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY) andformer Clinton White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles running the division. President Obama had appointed the two to co-chair a bipartisan presidential commission to produce ways to reduce the debt that includes both tax hikes, spending cuts and entitlement reforms. Fix the Debt was one of the bigger moneymakers for the think tank, with Republican businessman Pete Peterson reportedly giving the most to the division. [14]

Fix the Debt is no longer part of New America and is now a division of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. [15]

Her philanthropic endeavors also include funding media outlets like the Atlantic, Axios, Mother Jones, and ProPublica.
NBC's Chuck Todd was actually Sen. Amy Klobuchar's (D-MN) landlord and never disclosed the connection, despite conducting numerous interviews with Klobuchar during her 2020 presidential campaign and co-moderating two primary debates in which Klobuchar participated. Additionally, as Marlow notes, Todd's wife Kristian Denny is a Democratic campaign consultant. Her firm Maverick Strategies "was paid over $900,000 by the Bernie Sanders campaign in 2020 and over $1.5 million from Sanders in 2016."
Ben Smith, media columnist for the New York Times, has ties to the outlets he covers. Smith, who used to be the editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed, "accused journalist Ronan Farrow of playing fast-and-loose with his reporting on scandals that occurred at NBC," which happened to be what Marlow described as the "the largest outside investor in Buzzfeed." Marlow noted that "Smith retained stock in BuzzFeed at the time the Farrow piece was published."
Secret Service records show that Hunter Biden took at least 23 flights into or out of Joint Base Andrews, the home of Air Force One and Air Force Two, while his father was vice president. "Why was Hunter Biden flying to and from an American military base? Where was he going and what did he do when he got there? Americans may never know, and perhaps we have our pro-Biden establishment media to thank for that," Marlow writes.
The New York Times' 1619 Project was a "concerted effort by the Times to pivot the newsroom's focus from the Trump/Russia collusion hoax to race hysteria," according to Marlow. He also notes that a group of respected historians submitted a letter to the New York Times criticizing the Project for containing "factual errors" and having an "opaque" fact-checking process, but the Times dismissed their concerns.
Part of Amazon's $10 million donation to "organizations supporting justice and equity" went to Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, which itself was sponsored by Thousand Currents, "a non-profit whose vice-chairman is Susan Rosenberg, a convicted left-wing terrorist," Marlow reveals. "Rosenberg, a former member of the Weather Underground, came to national prominence as a central figure in the May 19 Communist Organization, a group responsible for a series of violent incidents in the late 1970s and early 1980s," Marlow writes. Among the group's most infamous crimes was the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Capitol.
John W. Rogers Jr., who serves on the board of the New York Times Company, has close ties to the Obamas and was one Barack Obama's earliest and strongest political supporters. Marlow describes Rogers as "perhaps the ultimate Obama insider." "If the establishment had an establishment-and it does-it is the New York Times," Marlow writes. "And it is crystal clear to honest observers of the Times that their editorial decisions reflect the people in their leadership."
After the 2020 election, Joe Biden, who benefited a great deal from Silicon Valley's political and financial support during his campaign, seemingly rewarded Big Tech by offering Silicon Valley elites key positions in his administration's transition team. Marlow notes that "Jeff Zients, a former Facebook board member, is Biden's COVID czar. Erskine Bowles, a former Facebook board member, advised the transition. Jessica Hertz, formerly a government affairs executive at Facebook, served as the Biden transition team's general counsel."

These revelations have generated a significant amount of buzz in recent days, drawing reactions from key political players including elected officials - from Gov. Kristi Noem (R) to Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA).

When Biden was sworn in, Schmidt was appointed to lead a government panel on artificial intelligence.

Marlow contacted Schmidt's team in an effort to confirm the Reuters report - but they refused to comment.

Facebook Hires Biden Transition, Obama Admin Official As VP Of 'Civil Rights'

Facebook has hired Roy Austin, former Obama administration official and a member of President Joe Biden's transition team, as the social media company's vice president of Civil Rights and deputy general counsel.

Austin used to serve as civil rights prosecutor and supervisor in the Department of Justice (DOJ) before becoming a deputy assistant to President Barack Obama for the Office of Urban Affairs, Justice and Opportunity in 2014. In 2017, he went into private practice as a criminal defense and civil rights attorney at Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis. In November, Biden named him as one of the volunteers on the Agency Review Team for the DOJ in his transition.

It's not clear what will be Austin's specific responsibilities at Facebook. The company didn't respond to a request for further details and an attempt to reach Austin for comment was unsuccessful.

"I am delighted to welcome Roy to Facebook as our VP of Civil Rights. Roy has proved throughout his career that he is a passionate and principled advocate for civil rights-whether it is in the courtroom or the White House," said Facebook General Counsel Jennifer Newstead in a Jan. 11 release.

"I know he will bring the same wisdom, integrity, and dedication to Facebook. It's hard to imagine anyone better qualified to help us strengthen and advance civil rights on our platform and in our company."

Austin's appointment underscores the closeness of Facebook to the Biden administration.

Former Facebook associate general counsel Jessica Hertz was the Biden transition's general counsel and is his new White House staff secretary. Jeffrey Zients-Biden's coronavirus czar-used to serve on Facebook's board of directors in 2018-2020. Austin Lin, a former program manager at Facebook, was on one of Biden's agency review teams before reportedly being tapped for a deputy role at White House's Office of Management and Administration. Erskine Bowles, a former Facebook board member, reportedly advised the transition team.

Biden's Transition Team Is Stacked With Former Facebook And Zuckerberg Insiders

Biden announced Friday that former Facebook Director of Public Policy Louisa Terrell would direct his White House Office of Legislative Affairs, which will put her in charge of advancing Biden's agenda in Congress. Terrell, who lobbied for Facebook from 2011 through 2013, currently oversees legislative affairs for the Biden transition team.

Terrell's appointment to the influential Biden administration post comes shortly after Biden campaign spokesman Bill Russo said in a now-deleted tweet that Facebook was "shredding the fabric of our democracy" for allowing disinformation to propagate on the social media network following the election.

Democratic National Committee Chief Mobilization Officer Patrick Stevenson also tweeted following the election that Facebook and the Republican Party are "the two biggest institutional threats to our democracy."

Biden told The New York Times editorial board in January that Zuckerberg is "a real problem."

"I've never been a big fan of Facebook, as you probably know," Biden said. "I've never been a big Zuckerberg fan."

The Biden transition team told Politico on Monday that it supports the criticisms the campaign levied against Facebook.

Politico previously reported that at least two former Facebook board members serve positions in Biden's transition team.

Biden transition co-chair Jeff Zients served on the Facebook board of directors from 2018 to early 2020, and Erskine Bowles, who held a seat on Facebook's board from 2011 to 2019, serves as an advisor to the transition team, according to Politico.

Zients reportedly left Facebook due to disagreements with how disinformation was handled on the network and Bowles left after Facebook leadership refused to follow his political advice, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Politico also reported that a former Facebook executive who helped the company navigate the FTC's probe into Cambridge Analytica, Jessica Hertz, was named general counsel for Biden's transition team in September, an appointment that was criticized by the left-wing of the Democratic party.

"The ultimate arbiter for ethics for the Biden transition was a senior regulatory official for Facebook up until a few months ago, at a time when progressives and the Biden campaign are fighting against the right-wing agenda of Facebook," said the Director of the Revolving Door Project, Jeff Hauser, according to Politico.

And at least three individuals serving posts on Biden transition agency review teams recently worked for Zuckerberg's charity, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Former Facebook engineering director and current Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Vice President David Recordon serves on the Biden transition agency review team for the Executive Office of the President, Management and Administration.

Also serving on the agency review team with Recordon is former Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Technical Program Manager Austin Lin.

Lin, who according to his LinkedIn profile held the same title during a brief stint at Facebook in 2017 and 2018, also serves on Biden's agency review team overseeing the National Security Council.

And Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Director of Engineering Andrew Nacin holds a seat on the Biden agency review team overseeing the United States Digital Service.

The Biden transition team did not immediately return a request for comment.

"The department considered all elements of current and potential retirement plans and built a blended system that – in the military judgment of the Department of Defense – best enables us to maintain the readiness of the all-volunteer force," said Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Steve Warren in a press release about the proposal. Warren asserted said the shift will save the Pentagon some $8.1 billion over the next decade, Reuters reported.

But advocates who track federal spending say future veterans are essentially being asked to swallow cuts to their retirement checks so the Pentagon can maintain spending on costly and dubious pet projects.

"If Congress is looking to save money, we can think of a far bigger fish for them to fry in the Pentagon budget – namely overpriced and unproven weapons systems," said Joe Newman, a spokesman for the Project on Government Oversight, a watchdog group. In comparison to the $8.1 billion in projected savings on retirement benefits, Newman cited the Pentagon's F-35 jet program, which is not cleared for use in combat and which is estimated to cost $1.4 trillion.

An independent audit of the Pentagon has never been completed, despite a long-standing federal law requiring such an exercise. A 2013 report from Reuters found that the Pentagon has a "chronic failure to keep track of its money – how much it has, how much it pays out and how much is wasted or stolen."

The proposed changes at issue would bring modern day 401(k)-style retirement investing to one of the last major preserves for old-fashioned pensions in which retirees are guaranteed pre-set amounts of income.

Under the current program, the military invests retirement money exclusively in U.S. Treasury bills, while guaranteeing set levels of benefits for retired veterans. The new initiative would reduce guaranteed benefits while shifting 3 percent of service members' pay into the federal Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), with the government financing an additional 1 percent in contributions.

The TSP is a 401(k)-style retirement plan that invests money with private financial firms and does not guarantee a set amount of retirement income. The TSP currently invests more than 55 percent of its assets with BlackRock, according to the system's financial statements.

While the TSP does allow participants to forgo investing in actively managed funds by enrolling in a lower-risk U.S. Treasury bill option, the system encourages enrollees to "diversify" across asset classes. Over the next 25 years, the Obama plan would, if enacted, shift roughly $91 billion in service members' compensation into the TSP. Assuming military participants invest in the same way as other TSP participants, that shift could end up funneling up to $50 billion to BlackRock in that time period.

Though the TSP discloses its overall fees, program officials declined to disclose how much it specifically pays to BlackRock, asserting that such information is proprietary. BlackRock did not respond to International Business Times' questions.

Under the military's existing pension plan, service members currently pay no annual fees to Wall Street money managers. If the Obama administration's changes are approved, new service members in the TSP will pay investment management fees – either to the TSP or to BlackRock, depending on which investment fund they choose.

The proposed changes to the military's retirement system came from the president's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, headed by former Sen. Alan Simpson and private equity executive Erskine Bowles. That commission was most famous for pushing cuts to Social Security benefits, but also included proposals to slash military retirement benefits.

"Military and civilian pensions are … out of line with pension benefits available to the average worker in the private sector," the commission's 2010 report argued.

One of the leading proponents of the Simpson-Bowles proposals was Pete Peterson, President Richard Nixon's former secretary of commerce and co-founder of the Blackstone Group. BlackRock was seeded by the Blackstone Group, and BlackRock's original name was Blackstone Financial Management. In addition, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink is on the steering committee of a group founded by Simpson and Bowles to champion their commission's recommendations.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is leaving Facebook's board of directors, the social media giant announced Friday afternoon. Hastings, who had been on Facebook's board since 2011, will not run for re-election at the company's annual shareholder meeting, which is scheduled for May 30.

Former White House chief of staff Erskine B. Bowles will also be stepping down from Facebook's board at that time. Bowles, who is also president emeritus of the University of North Carolina, had been a board member since 2011 as well.

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc more than doubled the money it spent on Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg's security in 2018 to $22.6 million, a regulatory filing showed on Friday. Zuckerberg has drawn a base salary of $1 for the past three years, and his "other" compensation was listed at $22.6 million, most of which was for his personal security. Nearly $20 million went toward security for Zuckerberg and his family, up from about $9 million the year prior. Zuckerberg also received $2.6 million for personal use of private jets, which the company said was part of his overall security program.

Facebook has in the past few years faced public outcry over its role in Russia's alleged influence on the 2016 U.S. presidential election and has come under fire following revelations that Cambridge Analytica obtained personal data from millions of Facebook profiles without consent.
