DALLAS - A former executive minister at Highland Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC) - one of the Dallas area's most prominent churches - resigned and was later arrested for solicitation of prostitution this past fall, HPUMC officials confirmed to WFAA.
A spokesperson for HPUMC said the family of 72-year-old John Fiedler submitted his resignation on Oct. 8, 2024, citing "an undiagnosed medical condition." Fiedler's resignation was announced to the church's congregation during the Oct. 20, 2024 service, the spokesperson said.
Then, on Oct. 30, 2024, Fiedler's wife informed Rev. Paul Rasmussen, a senior minister at the church, of Dr. Fielder's outstanding warrant for solicitation of prostitution and of his intent to turn himself in, the church spokesperson said.

Methodist Pastor Quietly Retires from Texas Megachurch After Being Arrested for Solicitation of Prostitution

A pastor at the largest United Methodist Church in the country was arrested for solicitation of prostitution this past October, according to legal records obtained by The Roys Report (TRR). The church then quietly retired the pastor.
Dr. John Fiedler, previously the executive minister Highland Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC) in Dallas, Texas, was caught following a prostitution bust at a massage parlor, according to an incident report.
The incident occurred in Carrollton, which is located about 20 miles north of Dallas, after local police inspected the business on Oct. 2, 2024, the report said.
No alcohol or drug use was suspected to be involved in the incident, Carrollton Police Department noted in the report.
TRR reached out to Carrollton Police Department repeatedly for further comment but did not hear back.

Two major airline CEOs question the need for masks on planes

The CEOs of two of the nation's major airlines say they don't think wearing masks on planes does much to help limit exposure to Covid.

The comments from American Airlines (AAL) CEO Doug Parker - the nation's largest carrier - and Southwest (LUV) CEO Gary Kelly came during a hearing about the financial support that airlines received from the federal government in 2020 and 2021. But the topic of masks arose via a question from Sen. Roger Wicker, the ranking Republican on the Senate committee holding the hearing.

"I think the case is very strong that masks don't add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment. It is very safe and very high quality compared to any other indoor setting," said Kelly.

Both Kelly and Parker, who each have announced plans to retire as CEOs in the coming months, mentioned that high-grade HEPA air filters on planes capture virtually all airborne contamination and air quality is helped by how frequently cabin air is exchanged with fresh air from outside the cabin.

"I concur. An aircraft is the safest place you can be," said Parker. "It's true of all of our aircraft - they all have the same HEPA filters and air flow."

After the hearing, American Airlines tried to walk back Parker's remarks. It issued a statement claiming that his concurrence with Kelly was on the point about the quality of the air in the aircraft cabin, not mask requirements.

Southwest Airlines has scrapped a plan to put unvaccinated employees who have applied for but haven't received a religious or medical exemption on unpaid leave starting by a federal deadline in December.
Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are among the carriers that are federal contractors and subject to a Biden administration requirement that their employees are vaccinated against Covid-19 by Dec. 8 unless they are exempt for medical or religious reasons. Rules for federal contractors are stricter than those expected for large companies, which will allow for regular Covid testing as an alterative to a vaccination.
Executives at both carriers in recent days have tried to reassure employees about job security under the mandate, urging them to apply for exemptions if they can't get vaccinated for medical or for a sincerely held religious belief. The airlines are expected to face more questions about the mandate when they report quarterly results Thursday morning. Pilots labor unions have sought to block the mandates or sought alternatives like regular testing.
Southwest's senior vice president of operations and hospitality Steve Goldberg and Julie Weber, vice president and chief people officer wrote to staff on Friday that if employees' requests for an exemption hasn't been approved by Dec. 8, they could continue to work while following mask and distancing guidelines until the request has been reviewed.
The company is giving employees until Nov. 24 to finish their vaccinations or apply for an exemption. It will continue paying them while the company reviews their requests, and said it will allow those who are rejected to continue working "as we coordinate with them on meeting the requirements (vaccine or valid accommodation)."
"This is a change from what was previously communicated. Initially, we communicated that these Employees would be put on unpaid leave and that is no longer the case," they wrote in the note, which was reviewed by CNBC.
Southwest confirmed the policy change, which comes just weeks before the deadline.
United Airlines implemented its own vaccine mandate in August, a month before the government rules were announced, had told staff who did receive exemptions would be put on unpaid leave. More than 96% of its staff are vaccinated. Some employees sued the company over the unpaid leave and a federal judge in Fort Worth has temporarily blocked the airline from going forward with its plan.
American's CEO Doug Parker met with labor union leaders on Thursday to discuss vaccine exemptions.
American Airlines management "indicated that, unlike the approach taken by United, they were exploring accommodations that would allow employees to continue to work," the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union that represents American's mainline cabin crews, said in a note to members on Monday. "They failed to offer any specifics as to what such accommodations might look like at that time."
Hundreds of Southwest employees, customers and other protestors demonstrated against the vaccine mandate outside of Southwest Airlines' headquarters in Dallas, the Dallas Morning News reported.
An airline spokeswoman said the carrier is aware of the demonstration.
"Southwest acknowledges various viewpoints regarding the Covid-19 vaccine, and we have always supported, and will continue to support, our employees' right to express themselves, with open lines of communication to share issues and concerns," she said.
Southwest's Goldberg and Weber told staff that if their request for exemption is denied, employees can reapply if the staff member "has new information or circumstances it would like the Company to consider."
Southwest requires new-hire employees to be vaccinated as does American Airlines for new staff for its mainline operation, spokesmen said.
Delta Air Lines is also a federal contractor subject to the government requirements, but it hasn't yet required staff vaccinations. Last week, the carrier reported that about 90% of its roughly 80,000 employees are vaccinated. In August, Delta announced unvaccinated staff would start paying $200 more a month for company health insurance in November.

If you thought that in exchange for the billions in taxpayer funds that Congress gave to the largest US commercial airlines, these same companies would put layoffs on hold for at least a few months, you'd be wrong, because in a letter from American Airliens CEO Doug Parker, the largest US carrier warned that starting this Friday, the company which has now received two rounds of bailouts, will begin issuing aptly titled "Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification" (WARN) notices covering approximately 13,000 team members. As a reminder, WARN notices may be required by law in advance of potential furloughs in certain locations, and while American is quick to note that "these notices do not necessarily equate to furloughs" the reality is that another 13,000 American airlines are about the be let off.

Why the sudden reversal from the company which in December was so giddy about the bright future, it had to wear shades? Because as it lays out in the letter "we are nearly five weeks into 2021, and unfortunately, we find ourselves in a situation similar to much of 2020. As we closed out last year with the successful extension of the Payroll Support Program (PSP), we fully believed that we would be looking at a summer schedule where we'd fly all of our airplanes and need the full strength of our team. US airlines are preparing to lay off tens of thousands of employees unless they get additional federal aid. The industry has been struggling to stay afloat amid an unprecedented collapse in air travel due to the Covid pandemic.

American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said late Wednesday that the carrier has no choice but to cut 19,000 jobs after attempts to get more federal money failed. The CEO of United Airlines, Scott Kirby, said the decision to cut 13,000 jobs marked "a very sad day for all of us here at United."

Earlier in the day, Parker told CNN he still hoped that the job cuts might be avoided if the airline saw signs that Congress and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin would be able to reach an agreement.

"Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that any of these efforts will come to fruition," Parker wrote in a memo to staff. Both Parker and Kirby suggested they could reverse course and quickly rehire employees if a deal is reached in the coming days, though. "We implore our elected leaders to reach a compromise, get a deal done now, and save jobs," Kirby wrote to employees.

Congressional Democrats have proposed a $2.2 trillion package that would include $25 billion in aid for the nation's airlines. However, Mnuchin has ruled out the likelihood of a stand-alone bill providing only airline aid, saying: "I am hopeful we can come to an understanding and if we do, that ... the airlines will postpone their actions."

In addition to the job losses at American and United, some 17,000 other employees throughout the US airline industry have been notified that their roles are at risk. As many as 50,000 jobs are at stake, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said earlier this month.

American Airlines (AAL) plans to lay off 17,500 employees in addition to 1,500 who were furloughed earlier as air travel fails to recover amid the coronavirus pandemic, USA Today reported.

News of the layoffs was announced to employees in a memo obtained by USA Today. American Airlines CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said was the most difficult update they have had to make since the coronavirus pandemic began.

"Today is the hardest message we have had to share so far - the announcement of involuntary staffing reductions effective Oct. 1," Parker and Isom said in the memo.

American warned last month it would have to lay off as many as 25,000 workers as air travel stalled during the pandemic. Now Parker and Isom said cuts would need to be made unless the payroll protection program created by the CARES Act was extended.

Some 8,100 flight attendants, who will be furloughed, and 1,600 pilots are among those being cut. About 1,500 administrative and management layoffs were made earlier, USA Today reported. This is on top of the thousands of workers who already have taken voluntary permanent or temporary leave from the airline.

"The coming weeks and months will be some of the most difficult we have ever faced," Parker and Isom said in the memo. "No matter how challenging they seem, remember this: The American Airlines team is no stranger to adversity, and in adversity, we always come through. We will come out on the other side of this crisis. Demand will return. Team members will be recalled. The world will find its new normal, and when it does, American is going to be there.

The Business Roundtable is an "association of chief executive officers of America's leading companies working to promote a thriving U.S. economy and expanded opportunity for all Americans through sound public policy."

Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon serves as BRT chairman. Other members of BRT include Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky, Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson, and CVS Health CEO Larry J. Merlo.

On Friday, the influential business association, based in Washington, D.C., called for every company to require face masks.

"One of the most effective things we can all do to protect public health and the economy is to wear face coverings in public settings, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain," BRT said.

"Business Roundtable applauds the many companies that are protecting their employees and customers by mandating the use of face coverings indoors consistent with CDC guidelines," BRT said. "We encourage every company to adopt this practice and hope that all Americans will adopt the use of face coverings to protect their families, friends, neighbors, and our economy."

Earlier this month, BRT co-signed a letter along with the National Retail Federation addressed to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The letter requested national guidelines for "imposing location-based mandatory mask requirements in all public spaces."

The National Retail Federation is also "encouraging all retailers to adopt a nationwide policy that requires customers to wear face coverings or masks to protect the health and well-being of customers, associates and partners during the coronavirus pandemic."

The NRF has members from Walmart, Google, Facebook, Macy's, BJ's, American Express, IBM, LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Inc., and the Ralph Lauren Corporation.

"The health and safety of associates and customers is retailers' number one priority and wearing a face covering or mask is scientifically proven to reduce the spread of COVID-19," the statement from the NRF read. "Workers serving customers should not have to make a critical decision as to whether they should risk exposure to infection or lose their jobs because a minority of people refuse to wear masks in order to help stop the spread of the deadly coronavirus."

Many nationwide companies have already instituted policies of requiring patrons to wear face masks in stores.

Employees at embattled American Airlines Inc., the world's largest airline in terms of fleet size, were warned Wednesday 25,000 of them could face furloughs as the ongoing COVID-19 surge dashed hopes of a recovery in airline travel for the rest of the year.

The number to be temporarily unemployed equates to 19% of American's total workforce of about 133,700 persons. Employees were told those whose jobs are at risk won't necessarily be laid off, CNBC noted.

The furloughs were revealed in WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notices sent to employees. WARN notices will be sent to 37% of flight attendants (9,950 people); 2,500 pilots (18% of total); 3,200 maintenance workers; and 4,500 fleet service employees.

The WARN Act requires employers notify employees about possible layoffs or temporary furloughs 60 days in advance.

The catastrophic decline in global airline travel has seen American Airline's revenue in June plummet more than 80% year-on-year, said CEO Doug Parker and President Robert Isom in a letter to staff. They said that "with infection rates increasing and several states reestablishing quarantine restrictions, demand for air travel is slowing again."

Both men again encourage American employees to take advantage of new extended leaves that could last for up to two years. Employees can also opt for early retirement. These incentives intend to encourage as many employees to leave the company voluntarily before they start being fired on October 1.

Under the $2 trillion CARES Act, U.S. airlines can't fire employees or reduce their pay until September 30. American took advantage of the $58 billion federal bailout provided by the CARES Act. Half this amount consists of grant aid, which covers airline payrolls and prevents layoffs through September 30.

Earlier this month, American said it has 20,000 more employees than it needs for its reduced fall schedule. In late May, Parker said American planned to shed 30% of its office jobs and slash its fleet size by more than 20%. The 30% number is equivalent to 5,000 employees.

Parker said American is being forced to become small to survive amid heavily degraded passenger numbers due to COVID-19 distancing restrictions.

American later offered management and support staff buyouts and retirement packages to firing thousands of employees. Buyout options include a third of pay and full medical coverage through December 31.

The U.S. Treasury said on Thursday it has agreed on terms for government loans with five U.S. carriers, including American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O). The Treasury said it had signed letters of intent with American, Frontier Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines (HA.O), SkyWest Airlines (SKYW.O), and Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N) under a $25 billion emergency loan program created by Congress in March. American said on Thursday it expects to close on a $4.75 billion Treasury loan in the third quarter on top of $5.8 billion in payroll assistance it was previously awarded.

American Chief Executive Doug Parker and President Robert Isom warned employees on Thursday that it may face significant over-staffing as it tries to win voluntary departures.

"We currently anticipate having 20 to 30% - or more than 20,000 - more team members on payroll than we need to operate our schedule this fall," they wrote in an employee memo. "To be clear, this doesn't mean 20,000 of our team members will be furloughed in October, it simply means we still have work to do to right-size our team for the airline we will operate." Treasury separately awarded airlines $25 billion in payroll assistance bailouts with most of the aid in the form of grants that does not need to be repaid.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement that "conversations with other airlines continue, and we look forward to finalizing agreements as soon as possible." Airlines have until Sept. 30 to decide whether to take the loan. Like the payroll assistance funds, the loans come with a ban on stock buybacks and paying dividends and set limits on executive compensation.

Hawaiian Airlines, which was awarded $292 million in payroll assistance, had sought an additional $364 million Treasury loan. Spirit was awarded $335 million in payroll assistance and said it was eligible for $741 million in Treasury loans. SkyWest received $438 million in payroll assistance.

Airlines have warned that a recent spike in U.S. coronavirus cases could dampen travel demand that is still off around 75% from last year but has rebounded significantly over April lows. Airlines can furlough or eliminate jobs starting Oct. 1.

Last week, six U.S. aviation unions told lawmakers another $32 billion in payroll aid is needed to keep hundreds of thousands of workers employed through March 31.

The real black box: American Airlines share buybacks are a scam to enrich execs - and the Covid-19 bailouts will fuel more of them

To anyone doubting the Covid-19 bailouts will line executives' pockets, American Airlines CEO Doug Parker says he'll "find a way around" the rules against it. This after making $150 million while AAL's stock plummeted 70%.

Stock buybacks are the ultimate vehicle of self-enrichment. Consider the following as a 'case study' of Wall Street's legal fraud. Under CEO Doug Parker's leadership from 2013-2020, American Airlines (AAL) has seen its stock plummet 70%. When one looks at Parker's pay awarded vs the company's three-year average economic profits, his pay-for-performance metrics are abominable. The media worships Parker for his stewardship of AAL during this crisis and reports that, for the past three years, Parker's salary and bonus were zero.

However, they fail to mention that AAL's legal Ponzi stock-buyback scheme saw Parker's 2016-2018 take-home pay rocket to $70.2 million. (According to the Financial Times, Parker's total award from selling stock since 2013 is $150 million). It's not bad for Parker, but it's horrendous for AAL employees, shareholders and American taxpayers who will be stuffed with a $20 billion bailout. Fair? Not on your life.

Debt-fuelled stock buybacks and dividend payments are engineered to artificially increase stock prices so that self-interested CEOs like Parker can "earn" higher compensation. Increasing debt creates an illusion of better earnings. However, buybacks cannibalize corporate balance sheets, leaving taxpayers exposed to unlimited "bailouts" when these leveraged bets go wrong.

What's the difference between rogue hedge fund managers and airline CEOs? Not much, except some airline CEOs have been given golden parachutes to the tune of nearly $17.5 million.

So who is enabling these CEOs to line their pockets with taxpayer money?

Last summer, the US Federal Reserve released the results of its annual Comprehensive Capital Analysis and Review (CCAR). The CCAR is a bank stress test, which all the banks passed, and after passing the stress test, the Federal Reserve approved $125 billion in share buybacks!

American Airlines extends Boeing 737 MAX cancellations for fourth time

American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) said on Sunday it is extending for a fourth time cancellations of about 115 daily flights into early November due to the ongoing grounding of the Boeing Co (BA.N) 737 MAX jets.
The airline's decision was expected after the Federal Aviation Administration, which must reapprove the jets for flight following two fatal crashes, last month uncovered a new flaw that Boeing estimates will take until at least September to fix.

"American Airlines remains confident that impending software updates to the Boeing 737 MAX, along with the new training elements Boeing is developing in coordination with our union partners, will lead to recertification of the aircraft this year," the airline said in a statement on Sunday.

American, the world's largest airline and the second largest MAX operator in the United States, most recently had planned to keep the MAX, which it used on most flights between New York's LaGuardia airport and Miami, off its schedule through Sept. 3. It has been substituting other aircraft for its busiest flights while canceling others and temporarily suspending direct flights between Oakland, California, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

Some analysts have said they do not expect the MAX jets to fly again before the end of the year.

American, with 24 737 MAX aircraft and dozens more on order, is scheduling without the jets through Nov. 2.

Among other U.S. MAX carriers, Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N) has removed the aircraft from its scheduling through Oct. 1, and United Airlines Holdings (UAL.O) until Nov. 3. Southwest is the world's largest MAX operator.

The 737 MAX, which had been Boeing's fastest-selling aircraft thanks to its fuel-efficient engines and longer ranger, was grounded worldwide in March after an Ethiopian Airlines plane plunged to the ground soon after take-off, five months after a similar Lion Air fatal crash off the coast of Indonesia.

Boeing hopes a software upgrade and new pilot training will add layers of protection to prevent erroneous data from triggering a system called MCAS, which was activated in both the planes before they crashed.

American, which is also grappling with cancellations related to a labor dispute with its mechanics, is due to report second-quarter results later this month, with an expected rise in unit revenues as capacity constraints mean its planes are flying fuller.

However, the airline cut its annual profit forecast in April, blaming an estimated $350 million hit from the MAX groundings.

American's chief executive, Doug Parker, has been among the most vocal supporters of the MAX aircraft, saying on June 12 that it was "highly likely" flights would resume by mid-August.

MIT has responded to Donald Trump's bizarre suggestion that its scientists are better at flying planes than trained pilots.

In a strange tweet posted on Tuesday morning, the president had suggested that computer scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were required to to fly new planes, because they are so "complicated". "Pilots are no longer needed," he wrote.

The post appeared to be a response to the Ethiopian Airlines disaster, in which 157 people were killed in a crash that had strange parallels to another accident involving the same model of plane just months before. Authorities across Europe have temporarily grounded all of the same planes in an attempt to stop further disasters.

The US has not yet taken those measures, but Mr Trump apparently sent the tweet as is response to the crash. Rather than announcing policy changes, he argued that planes are too complicated, that he doesn't want "Albert Einstein" to be his pilot, and that MIT's computer scientists were required to fly planes.

Now MIT has responded to the strange tweet, asking the president not to get rid of pilots, who are trained in flying those same planes.

"We're very happy to help," MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Lab wrote on Twitter. "But maybe we can keep the pilots, too?"

The message concluded with a thinking emoji and a thumbs-up.

"Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better," he wrote on Twitter.

"Split second decisions are needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don't know about you, but I don't want Albert Einstein to be my pilot.

"I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!"

The president made no mention of the crashes of Boeing planes, but the remarks were widely understood as his response to the disasters.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents more than 26,000 flight attendants at American Airlines, called on CEO Doug Parker to "strongly consider grounding these planes until an investigation can be performed."

Consumer Reports called on airlines and the FAA to ground the jets until a thorough safety investigation is complete.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed six minutes after taking off for Nairobi, killing people from 35 countries. It should take five days before victims' remains are identified, Ethiopian Airlines spokesman Asrat Begashaw told the AP.

The CEOs of Southwest and American Airlines are challenging the need to wear masks on airplanes, saying they don't believe they do much to limit exposure to Covid-19.

Doug Parker, CEO of American Airlines - the nation's largest carrier - and Gary Kelly, CEO of Southwest, made the comments during a hearing about federal financial support received in 2020 and 2021. The comments were in response to a question from Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MI), the ranking Republican on the committee, according to CNN.

Kelly and Parker - both of whom will be retiring in the coming months, said that high-grade HEPA air filters employed on modern planes already capture virtually all airborne contamination, and air quality is improved by the frequent exchange of fresh air from outside the cabin.

"I concur. An aircraft is the safest place you can be," said Parker. "It's true of all of our aircraft - they all have the same HEPA filters and air flow."

After the hearing, American Airlines tried to walk back Parker's remarks. It issued a statement claiming that his concurrence with Kelly was on the point about the quality of the air in the aircraft cabin, not mask requirements.

Sara Nelson, the president of the Association of Flight Attendants, testified at the hearing that not all aircraft are equipped with the same quality of air filters. For example, some older planes do not have HEPA filters, she said. -CNN

"I think that is probably for the medical community to decide rather than me," said Nelson. "What I will add is that the studies that have been done [on masks]….were done with mannequins that were sitting straight forward with masks on, not removing them, not eating."

"It is important to recognize that the safe, controlled environment on planes…includes the HEPA filters that are not on all aircraft," she added.

Masks have been required on planes ever since the CDC issued guidance on the matter.

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) grilled the CEOs over the mask comments.

"I'm shocked that some of the CEOs here today have suggested we no longer need masks mandates on planes," he said. "In the face of Omicron, children under five who still cannot be vaccinated….and that we still allow unvaccinated people on planes."

Markey added that it was "immoral" to suggest that people on planes be forced to sit next to unvaccinated, unmasked passengers.

To that, Nelson agreed that it wasn't time to lift the mask mandate.

"I believe that the government has taken a very responsible approach to this," she said. "We believe it should continue to stay in place. It's a workplace safety issue. We do need a consistent message though. It troubles me too to hear different messages. I would hope we are going to stay on the same messages and follow the medical experts and do what's necessary to keep everybody safe."

Meanwhile, Delta CEO Ed Bastian thinks 2022 will be a "recovery year, but a profitable recovery year."

Speaking from the carrier's investor day in New York, he added that Omicron "will be the dominant strain over the next couple weeks ... We know it will delay the international recovery, probably by 3-4 months," and that there will be no "discernible" impact on domestic demand aside from some fallout in Q1.

The CEOs of two of the nation's major airlines say they don't think wearing masks on planes does much to help limit exposure to Covid.

The comments from American Airlines (AAL) CEO Doug Parker - the nation's largest carrier - and Southwest (LUV) CEO Gary Kelly came during a hearing about the financial support that airlines received from the federal government in 2020 and 2021. But the topic of masks arose via a question from Sen. Roger Wicker, the ranking Republican on the Senate committee holding the hearing.

"I think the case is very strong that masks don't add much, if anything, in the air cabin environment. It is very safe and very high quality compared to any other indoor setting," said Kelly.

Southwest drops plan to put unvaccinated staff on unpaid leave starting in December

Southwest Airlines has scrapped a plan to put unvaccinated employees who have applied for but haven't received a religious or medical exemption on unpaid leave starting by a federal deadline in December.

Southwest Airlines and American Airlines are among the carriers that are federal contractors and subject to a Biden administration requirement that their employees are vaccinated against Covid-19 by Dec. 8 unless they are exempt for medical or religious reasons. Rules for federal contractors are stricter than those expected for large companies, which will allow for regular Covid testing as an alterative to a vaccination.

Executives at both carriers in recent days have tried to reassure employees about job security under the mandate, urging them to apply for exemptions if they can't get vaccinated for medical or for a sincerely held religious belief. The airlines are expected to face more questions about the mandate when they report quarterly results Thursday morning. Pilots labor unions have sought to block the mandates or sought alternatives like regular testing.

Southwest's senior vice president of operations and hospitality, Steve Goldberg, and Julie Weber, vice president and chief people officer, wrote to staff on Friday that if employees' requests for an exemption haven't been approved by Dec. 8, they could continue to work while following mask and distancing guidelines until the request has been reviewed.

The company is giving employees until Nov. 24 to finish their vaccinations or apply for an exemption. It will continue paying them while the company reviews their requests, and said it will allow those who are rejected to continue working "as we coordinate with them on meeting the requirements (vaccine or valid accommodation)."

"This is a change from what was previously communicated. Initially, we communicated that these Employees would be put on unpaid leave and that is no longer the case," they wrote in the note, which was reviewed by CNBC.

Southwest confirmed the policy change, which comes just weeks before the deadline.

United Airlines implemented its own vaccine mandate in August, a month before the government rules were announced. United had told staff that they would be put on unpaid leave if they received exemptions. More than 96% of its staff is vaccinated. Some employees sued the company over the unpaid leave and a federal judge in Fort Worth, Texas, has temporarily blocked the airline from going forward with its plan.

American's CEO, Doug Parker, met with labor union leaders on Thursday to discuss vaccine exemptions.

American Airlines management "indicated that, unlike the approach taken by United, they were exploring accommodations that would allow employees to continue to work," the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union that represents American's mainline cabin crews, said in a note to members Monday. "They failed to offer any specifics as to what such accommodations might look like at that time."
