MYSTERY ON THE REAGAN How 200 sailors witnessed 'fiery UFO orb' floating above deck of US Navy aircraft carrier... and it's never been explained
Updated: 4:11 ET, Oct 4 2025
HUNDREDS of sailors stood mesmerised as they gazed up at what they claim was a 40ft-wide "UFO orb" hovering above a US Navy aircraft carrier.
A "glowing orange ball" spotted over the flight deck of the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan has gone down as one of the most mysterious sightings in US military history.
And it's never been explained.
Documentary filmmaker Dave C. Beaty - who produced 2019 film The Nimitz Encounters about another famous Navy UFO case - has been probing the mystery for years.
Beaty has interviewed a number of sailors who, to this day, insist that what they saw off the East Coast that night in early 2004 was a UFO.
Efforts to understand what took place have been hampered by the fact no official confirmation was ever given.
And one witness claimed senior officers acted suspiciously in the aftermath.
But Beaty told The Sun he believes there are more witnesses who can provide testimony - and believes their accounts are key to narrowing down when the event actually took place.
Seaman Patrick Gokey, who was serving on the ship that night, said the object "did not move in ways that I've seen other aircraft maneuver and it was faster than anything I've ever seen".
He estimated as many as 200 sailors saw it.
And former Navy quartermaster Karol Olesiak, who was on watch from 8pm to 12am and was responsible for the ship's logbook, also recalled the glowing orb.
He claimed it was about 40ft wide and hovered above the carrier for four hours from around 8pm onwards.
He described it as reminding him of Biblical descriptions of the "burning bush" and having "negative energy".
Olesiak alleged he was told not to log the encounter by the Officer of the Deck. He told The Sun: "I asked, should I be logging this?
"I might have asked the conning officer and I don't remember exactly what he said, but the impression that I got was that this should not be in the official log."
He also said there was an eerie calm among senior officers and bridge crew - as if they had seen such phenomena before.
"The entire bridge team was pilots," he said. "My assumption is yes [they had seen something similar before], but I asked an officer if any of them were talking about it the next day and he said 'yes'."
Olesiak believes its "possible" someone may have taken photos and videos of the object - but the incident occurred before camera phones were common and crew did not carry their mobiles.
"It's hard to believe somebody would be sitting on it for this long," he said.
Derek Smith, a former Boatswain's Mate Seaman, said he remembers the sighting "as if it occurred yesterday", calling it the "most mysterious thing" he has ever seen.
Smith, who was on starboard watch, said he noticed "all the people on the flight deck" looking up at the object.
He said the next day was simply "normal" - but his shipmates were discussing it, some dismissing the giant object as a "weather balloon" - to which he said "hell no".
"I [can] still visualise this object in my head to a tee regardless of 18 years having passed," Smith previously told The Sun.
"I do believe the government knows more than what they lead us to believe."
Smith stressed he was "an average Joe" with no paranormal experiences before or since.
He said: "All I know is it was something I could not explain. I could say now though I am starting to feel like I witnessed something special."
Derek's colleague claims she tried to report it to the bridge, but was told to "quit smoking crack".
And she also claims that while speaking to the ship's bridge, they said they were tracking the object on radar as it followed them doing "swoop" maneuvers.
Some of the witness testimonies vary, offering different times of day and duration of the encounter - but all agree the orange fireball was spotted near the ship.

JetBlue pilots drugged, raped female crew members in sick 'fantasy' assault, lawsuit claims
Earlier this week, Jane Doe #1 of Riverton, Utah and Jane Doe #2 of Fort Worth, Texas filed suit in federal court in New York. (iStock.)
Two JetBlue flight crew staffers are suing the airline and two male pilots for allegedly drugging and raping them - and another female colleague - during a layover in Puerto Rico last year, in a "fantasy" sexual assault that gave one of the victims an STD.
The plaintiffs are seeking at least $75,000 in damages in relation to the alleged May 2018 attack.
Earlier this week, Jane Doe #1 of Riverton, Utah, and Jane Doe #2 of Fort Worth, Texas, filed a lawsuit in federal court in New York, claiming that JetBlue pilots Eric Johnson and Dan Watson attacked the three women during a layover at the Intercontinental Hotel in San Juan, NY Daily News reports.
According to the lawsuit, Johnson and Watson met the three women on the beach on May 9 during the layover. After telling the trio that they worked for JetBlue, the men offered the flight crew staffers beers from a lunch bag, which the women consumed, unaware that the drinks were allegedy laced with drugs.
"The rest of the night became a blur for [the women]," the lawsuit states, and they soon found themselves back at the hotel with the pilots.
Though Watson is said to have "left the scene after having been scratched," Doe #1 says she recalls hazily waking up to Johnson raping her.
"[Her] flashes of memory included Johnson having sexual intercourse with the other [third] crewmember who was also under the influence of the drugs," the suit claims.
Though the pilots "intended to rape" Doe #2, she began to vomit and was spared from the attack as her nausea "was a turnoff," the court documents continue.
During a flight to Newark, N.J., the next morning, the plantiffs reported feeling "groggy and numb" as they "expressed to each other that they were stunned" by the turn of events.
After flying home to Utah, Doe #1 tested positive for the human papillomavirus (HPV), "which she could only have contracted from defendant Johnson," as per the suit.
Though Doe #1 and Doe #2 reported the attack to JetBlue's corporate headquarters and the company was "purporting to investigate the matter, no corrective action was ever taken again," documents allege.
Now, the two women are suing for at least $75,000 each in damages, in addition to attorney's fees and costs, according to the The New York Post.
Attorney Abraham Z. Melamed, of Derek Smith Law Group, offered Fox News the following statement on behalf of his clients:
"What happened to my clients is truly horrific, and JetBlue's failure to take corrective action is appalling. I am hopeful that the courage of my clients will bring about some real change and inspire others who have been silenced to come forward," Melamed said on March 21. "We look forward to getting justice."
Reps for JetBlue, meanwhile, told Fox News that though they could not comment on pending litigation, the airline "takes allegations of violent or inappropriate behavior very seriously and investigates such claims thoroughly."
"We work to create a respectful workplace for all our crewmembers where they feel welcome and safe," a spokesperson said.
In similar headlines, last year, a British Airways employee was accused of raping a senior flight attendant during a stop in Singapore in March. Weeks later, a SkyWest flight attendant also accused a pilot of drugging and raping her during a layover. In November, a captain that formerly flew for Alaska Airlines and was accused of raping his female co-pilot during an overnight stop sued the woman and the airline, claims he was wrongly terminated amid "false #MeToo claims" in a "negligent, flawed investigation."

INTERVIEW: Derek Smith, best-selling author of 'How the Prime Minister stole Freedom'
https://www.rebelnews.com/interview_Derek_Smith_best_selling_author_of_how_the_prime_minister_stole_freedom
'How the Prime Minister Stole Freedom' is a new children's book that illustrates in a funny way what we were able to witness during the Freedom Convoy.
How the Prime Minister stole Freedom is currently the number one top seller on Amazon. The author Derek Smith wanted to find a way to laugh at everything that has happened over the last two years.
Smith decided to write a book made for children as well as adults to illustrate in a parody what happened with the Freedom Convoy. He also mentioned the incident of Alexa Lavoie with the RCMP, when she was shot point blank by riot police.
Derek Smith wrote the book in partnership with Kaede Knipe, a young 18-year-old woman who always loved to draw and wanted to express herself. Derek Smith mentioned that he never thought he would one day see his government or his country becoming what it has. How the Prime Minister stole Freedom is a book that illustrates in a funny way what we were able to witness during the Freedom Convoy.

A book titled "How the Prime Minister Stole Freedom" topped Amazon's list of best selling books on Tuesday.
The book, illustrated by Kaepe Knipe and written by Derek Smith, is modelled the book around the Dr. Seuss Christmas classic, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," and follows a the prime minister character in his battle against freedom protestors who descend upon the capital.
The prime minister, a politician who resembles Canadian Liberal Party boss Justin Trudeau, is shown to be a stupid man with a brain "three sizes too small" who aims to steam the freedoms of protestors.
"From coast to coast the truckers drove through the snow and their small fringe numbers continued to grow. Then one day a trucker appeared in the town, with thousands behind them from miles around," one passage reads, according to the National Post.
The book's author, Derek Smith, is a full-time father from Calgary who also streams vintage video games.
Smith spoke to Maverick Media about the book and said that while he figured that the book would do well, he did not expect it to be the top-selling book on Amazon Canada as of Tuesday afternoon.
"I figured we'd hit number one in our category, but I didn't think we'd hit number one in Canada," he said.
He said that while he thought it was important to not talk politics around his children, that it was the Freedom Convoy and the anti-mandate protests that made him "heartbroken."
He said that he tried to write the book without malice and that he would not necessarily recommend reading it to children.
The book also does not mention Trudeau by name due to what the National Post says could be for legal reasons, with the book containing a lengthy disclaimer on its first page that says that the views and opinions expressed in this book are those of the characters only and do not necessarily reflect or represent the views and opinions held by individuals on which these characters are based."
The actual contents of the book, however, are not so subtle, with the titular prime ministerial figure using words like "peoplekind," drinking "drink-box water bottle sorta things," and being shown in blackface. He also has a framed photo of Winnie the Pooh, which is a clear reference to China's Xi Jinping, who banned the cartoon bear from the country's internet due to its comparable looks with the dictator. It's also a clear reference to Trudeau's infamous quote wherein he said he admired china for its "basic dictatorship."
