DNA technology links suspected serial rapist to 4 sexual assaults in northeast Dallas from 35 years ago
Investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the decades-old Golden State Killer case.

A 74-year-old man was arrested in a cold case of a sexual assault from 1985 in Lake Highlands, the Dallas County District Attorney announced Wednesday.
David Thomas Hawkins was linked through DNA testing to the aggravated sexual assault of a Dallas woman in 1985, according to the DA's office. He was arrested Wednesday morning at his home in Keene, Dallas police said in a statement.
Investigators used the same advanced DNA testing that helped crack the decades-old Golden State Killer case.
Hawkins will be booked into the Dallas County jail on a charge of aggravated sexual assault. He has a prior conviction for rape, police said. More charges are expected in the coming weeks, police said.
Hawkins was also connected to three other aggravated assaults that occurred in Lake Highlands and Northeast Dallas from 1982 to 1985, police said.
In each case, the suspect would break into the victim's residence in the middle of the night, threaten the woman with a weapon and sexually assault her, police said.
In each of the four cases, the victims where white women from 23 to 35 years old.
Investigators reviewed the 1985 case with the help of experts in forensic genetic genealogy. Investigators did extensive DNA testing, genealogy research and surveillance, the office said.
"This case was solved through the use of forensic genetic genealogy analysis and is the first of its kind to be solved in this manner in Dallas County," District Attorney John Creuzot said in a statement.
DNA evidence links Hawkins to two other aggravated sexual assaults in Shreveport, La. between 1980 and 1985.
Prior rape arrest
Hawkins was arrested on a rape charge in May 1973 in Fort Smith, Ark. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 30 years in prison with nine years suspended. His DNA was never collected and entered in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System because it predated the requirement to do so, police said.
He was released on parole in 1977. He has lived in Fort Worth and the surrounding area since that time, according to officials.
In 2005, the Dallas Police Department encouraged victims of sexual assaults that occurred in the 1970s and 1980s to come forward in the possibility of solving the cases.
As a result, the survivor of the 1985 case came forward and requested that her case be reopened.
DNA testing
There was no identifiable suspect until recently when his DNA was subjected togenealogicalresearch and analysis.
Forensic testing was completed through the federal Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant. The grant funds prosecutors, investigators and victim advocates in a cold case unit in the DA's office.
The grant "affords us the opportunity to investigate and vigorously prosecute cases that could not be solved decades ago. The use of forensic genetic genealogy is a game-changer for us," said prosecutor Leighton D'Antoni in a written statement.
The investigation was handled by the DA's office, the Dallas Police Department and the FBI office in Dallas.
"This investigation highlights what can happen when the best in Dallas County law enforcement come together to solve the most difficult cold cases," D'Antoni said.

If anon reads this correctly then the rape produced a child who was DNA tested against the rapist's DNA. Case then solved.

A former BBC presenter turned evangelical preacher has admitted to committing 40 sex offences, a number of them against children, across 30 years.

Benjamin David Thomas from Coed Onn Road in Flint, Wales, appeared at Mold Crown Court on Friday before Judge Niclas Parry.

The ex-BBC presenter admitted ten counts of sexual activity with a child, eight sexual assaults, and four attempts to commit sexual assault.

He also pleaded guilty to nine indecent assaults, seven counts of voyeurism and two counts of making indecent videos of children.

Thomas, worked for BBC Wales as a reporter and a presenter on Ffeil, the Welsh language news programme for young people, and on Wales Today.

He left the BBC in 2005 to preach on the streets of London, before returning to Wales in 2008 as pastor of the Criccieth Family Church in Gwynedd. He left his post last year.

Some of the offences date all the way back to 1990, but the most recent offences happened at the end of last year.

He has been given bail until his next appearance at Mold Crown Court on August 18, when he will be sentenced.

"This past Friday night we attended the annual gala to support RANA, a Mallorcan non-profit organization that works to prevent childhood sexual abuse and treat adult survivors. RANA is now over 10 years old and this year won the coveted Ramón Llull award for humanitarian work in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera).

RANA and most other social service organizations had a difficult time during the economic downturn of the past few years, the "crisis" as it is called here. Thanks to the generosity of Alec and Hilaria Baldwin in 2014 and 2015, RANA not only weathered the crisis but continued to grow and published an English translation of its book used for teaching elementary school children. Significant gifts were made through The Alec Baldwin Foundation facilitated by International Integrators.

This year the gala was sold out and support for the organization´s mission also was evident in the silent and live auctions as well as the raffles. And governmental and other support is beginning to be available again.

Its theme was the Great Gatsby and the 1920s, complete with props for each person who attended as they were photographed upon arrival. She and the rest of the RANA team were in high spirits and the effort was also supported by 17 teenagers who volunteered their time to assist with the logistics of greeting patrons, selling raffle tickets, holding auction items and circulating the silent auction bidding lists. Those attending came from Mallorca and other parts of Spain as well as from at least 15 other countries.

The city of Inca where we live was well represented, including by the 8 people who attended with us this year. Among them were Pere Rotger Llabrés, former mayor of Inca and former President of Parliament of the Balearic Islands, and his wife, Catalina Genestra Villalonga, who leads the 4 COS4S initiative for International Integrators.

RANA will continue to have challenges in meeting the needs of children, their families and adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and in raising the financial support required to pursue its mission. The strong show of support at the gala is an indication that its collaborators are ready, willing and able to help fund and grow the organization."
