INDIANAPOLIS, Iowa - David Simon, president and CEO of Simon Property Group, has died at 64 following a battle with cancer, the company announced Monday.

The company's board of directors described Simon as "the singular leader who built Simon Property Group into the largest and most admired retail real estate company in the world" and said he "passed away peacefully" Sunday, surrounded by his family after a "courageous battle with cancer."

Read the Fortune magazine cover story on the Reubens in Russian of about 15 years ago during the Aluminum Wars. Simon says unfair and untrue. 'John Wick' star Lance Reddick dies aged 60
The character actor reportedly passed away from "natural" causes that have not been made public (Covid shot)

Character actor Lance Reddick, best known for his role as Lt. Cedric Daniels on 'The Wire,'died "suddenly...from natural causes" on Friday, his publicist Mia Hansen told the Hollywood Reporter. His body was reportedly found at his Studio City apartment around 9:30am. Reddick was 60 years old.

While Reddick was already an established actor in several television series including HBO's OZ when he was called to read the script for The Wire, his role on that show as the stern-faced Lt. Cedric Daniels made him a household name, and he was soon offered larger roles in films, including the John Wick franchise.

He appears in the fourth John Wick film, due out later this month, and had several other completed projects in the pipeline, including John Wick spinoff The Ballerina and a remake of White Men Can't Jump.

Reddick has also lent his distinctive voice to video games, voicing Destiny 2 star Commander Zavala and serving as both voice and face of Sylens in the Horizon games Zero Dawn and Forbidden West.

Reddick's co-stars and collaborators paid tribute to the actor on social media. The Wire creator David Simon called him a "consummate professional, a devoted collaborator, a lovely soul and a friend," while his Wire co-star Wendell Pierce described him as a "man of great strength and grace. As talented a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of class."

Reddick leaves behind his wife Stephanie and two children, Yvonne and Christopher.

The Wire is an American crime drama television series created and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon. The series was broadcast by the cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002, and ended on March 9, 2008, comprising 60 episodes over five seasons. The idea for the show started out as a police drama loosely based on the experiences of his writing partner Ed Burns, a former homicide detective and public school teacher.[4]

Set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland, The Wire introduces a different institution of the city and its relationship to law enforcement in each season, while retaining characters and advancing storylines from previous seasons. The five subjects are, in chronological order: the illegal drug trade, the port system, the city government and bureaucracy, education and schools, and the print news medium. Simon chose to set the show in Baltimore because of his familiarity with the city.[4]

The large cast consists mainly of actors who are little known for their other roles, as well as numerous real-life Baltimore and Maryland figures in guest and recurring roles. Simon has said that despite its framing as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals.Whether one is a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge or a lawyer, all are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution to which they are committed."[5]

The Wire is lauded for its literary themes, its uncommonly accurate exploration of society and politics, and its realistic portrayal of urban life. During its original run, the series received only average ratings and never won any major television awards, but it is now often considered one of the greatest television series of all time.[6]

Conservative author and pundit Ann Coulter left many critics surprised and confused with tweets praising Joe Biden's Afghanistan withdrawal, despite the president facing criticism for the haphazard operation from left and right.

Coulter marked the last day of the US' chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan this week by doing something she rarely does: praising a Democrat.

The Fox News regular thanked Biden for fulfilling Trump's long-held promise to end the military conflicts in the Middle East. Before stepping down from his position, Trump had helped construct a deal with the Taliban to leave Afghanistan by May of this year. Biden's plan extended evacuation efforts to the end of August, and the administration has received heavy pushback from both Republicans and Democrats amid a disorganized exit that left allies behind. Dozens of civilians were also hurt or killed by a suicide bomb attack by ISIS-K at the airport, as well as 13 US service members.

Coulter went on to refer to Trump as a "wuss" for failing to fulfill his promise of a full Afghanistan pullout, saying Biden "had the balls" to pull off the feat.

"Trump REPEATEDLY demanded that we bring our soldiers home, but only President Biden had the balls to do it," she tweeted, adding examples of Trump calling for an end to the military conflict.

While Coulter has become more critical of Trump in recent years, she has still remained an outspoken firebrand conservative, rarely heaping on other Democrats the sort of praise she offered Biden, which led some jaws to drop on social media.

"Hell: you are cleared to freeze over now. I completely agree with Ann Coulter," MSNBC host and Biden supporter Joe-Ann Reid tweeted in response to Coulter.

"'I agree with Ann Coulter' has for more than a decade been my designated signal that I am being held at gunpoint and to immediately alert law enforcement," 'The Wire' creator and outspoken liberal David Simon added.

The US' evacuation operation ended on Monday night, minutes before an August 31 deadline, with more than 120,000 American civilians and Afghan allies being evacuated from the country. Trump has criticized Biden for his handling of the operation, originally having called for the president to stick to the original timeline and later claiming the mission would have run smoother and without as much incident had he still been president.

Simon Property Group Inc.'s malls are open and the landlord has seen its rent collection numbers climb in recent months as the U.S. grapples with the coronavirus.

Still, Chief Executive Officer David Simon acknowledged the company will struggle to collect rent from some tenants and that it's hard to predict how long it will take to recover from the economic fallout of Covid-19.

"I was feeling pretty good in June about finally getting back to work, and I feel less good in July and now I'm totally confused," David Simon said Monday on an earnings call. "I'm sure there will be some level of abatements and rent collections issues as we move forward for the rest of the year."

Simon's shares gained as much as 6.6% to $69.81 on Tuesday after the company posted revenue that beat estimates. The shares had slipped 56% this year through Monday's close.

The company said in a statement that 91% of its tenants at its U.S. properties are opening and operating and that rent collection had reached 73% in July, up from about 51% in April and May. Its net income slipped nearly 50% in the second quarter compared with 2019, in part because of $215 million in rent abatements and write-offs from bankrupt tenants.

Simon is in locked in a legal battle with rival mall owner Taubman Centers Inc. over a planned acquisition that it nixed in June. Taubman posted revenue and adjusted net income that missed estimates on Monday, with the company's loss of $34.1 million wider than expected.

Simon Property said that its entire portfolio of U.S. malls was open on July 10. But five days later, it had to shutter seven properties in California, where coronavirus cases have spiked.

Simon expressed frustration that malls are being treated differently than other retailers by government officials.

"There's not a lot of difference frankly, between a Costco store and a Simon mall when it comes to protocols and cleanliness and air quality," Simon said. "Let us compete. We suffered two months, where we could not compete and that's just not fair."

This is hardly new: ask a cop what happens when they pull over a black person for anything from a routine traffic stop to investigating a murder. '99 percent tell us we are only doing that because they are black,' said dozens and dozens of active and retired cops to me over the last five years.

What Butler wants, many cities already have: they are called Bronx juries – where black people tend not to convict black defendants. Even Hollywood uber-liberal David Simon had to acknowledge that in his 2013 book:

The effect of race on the judicial system is freely acknowledged by prosecutors and defense attorneys-black and white alike – although the issue is rarely raised directly in court. Race is instead a tacit presence that accompanies almost every panel of twelve into a Baltimore jury room.

Once, in a rare display, a black defense attorney actually pointed to her own forearm while giving closing arguments to an all-black panel: "Brothers and sisters," she said, as two white detectives went out of their minds in the back row of the gallery," I think we all know what this case is about."

Treme was set between late 2005, three months after the Katrina catastrophe and early 2009, during the first phase of the Obama administration. This chapter begins by assessing an unlikely convergence in the defiant rhetoric of Treme's protagonists who refuse to "bow" in the face of post-Katrina hardship and trauma, and that of the program's key offscreen villains, the Bush administration and American federal government whose post-9/11 defiance is well-documented. However, Simon and Overmyer's vision of post-Katrina New Orleans exceptionalism critically comments on the strident strain of post-9/11 American exceptionalism and attendant nationalism. This chapter also examines Treme's extended explorations of Bush-era multiculturalism, which pose a sustained challenge to one of the prevailing cornerstones of American exceptionalism: the melting pot myth. Finally, I argue that its depiction of neoliberal practices in New Orleans provides a vantage point through which it is able to comment on the post-9/11 acceleration of neoliberal policy more broadly.

David Simon is yet another influential joo thrust to the top of the media by his corrupt cronies so I'm not giving him any credit for lifting the lid on Baltimore. If anything, The Wire glamorized drug dealing and corruption, with white Americans (as the higher-ups) being blamed for the systematic problems. Funny that there were few, if any, overtly jooish characters in that series or any of his other works. The joo pulls this trick all the time - commenting negatively on aspects of American society without ever placing any blame on their own shrivelled and hunched shoulders.
