Fiery meteor traveling 30,000 mph lands near Georgia town, NASA reveals details

BLACKSVILLE, Ga. - NASA has shared what they know after many people in the Southeast filed reports of a fiery ball falling from the sky on Thursday.

Key information:
A fiery object was seen falling from the sky around 12:21 p.m. Thursday
The meteor was traveling at a rate of 30,000 mph
The fireball was produced by an asteroidal fragment weighing about a ton
The event was reported in at least five states
The meteorite landed near Blacksville, Georgia

According to NASA, the object that fell from the skies landed near Blacksville, Georgia, which is in Henry County.

The event was seen by the GLM (Geostationary Lightning Mapper) sensors, NOAA GOES satellites, and many residents from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
The fall appears in data from five different NEXRAD (Next Generation Weather Radar) and TDWR (Terminal Doppler Weather Radar) radars. A composite image of radar signatures can be found below.

According to Bill Cooke, lead, NASA's Meteoroid Environments Office at the agency's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the meteor was first seen at an altitude of 48 miles above the town of Oxford, Georgia, moving southwest at 30,000 miles per hour.
Cooke said the meteor disintegrated 27 miles above West Forest, Georgia, unleashing an energy of about 20 tons of TNT.

For comparison, the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, nicknamed "Fat Man," had an explosive yield equivalent to 21,000 tons of TNT.
The resulting pressure wave propagated to the ground, creating booms heard by many in that area. Cooke added that the fireball was produced by an asteroidal fragment 3 feet in diameter, weighing over a ton.

It is also worth noting that a minor meteor shower is currently passing through the atmosphere. June Bootids typically lasts from June 11 to July 2 with its peak occurring usually around June 21, according to the American Meteor Society.
This type of meteor shower only produces strong activities on rare occasions and is typically observed with rates of one visible meteor a night. It is also best seen during the evening hours.

WYFF News 4 talked with Astrophysicist David Moffett, who oversees Furman University's planetarium and observatory, said, "I thought maybe this is associated with the meteor shower, like the current one, but it's not."
"The thing is that time ranges when those meteors could occur," Moffett said. "It could be associated with that meteor shower, or it could just be a completely random instance."

Video from White Horse Road in Greenville and from Anderson show the fireball falling from the sky at 12:21 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Charleston previously said the following "Many reports of a #fireball across the Southeast U.S.
It is not certain, but the satellite-based lightning detection shows a streak within cloud free sky over the NC/VA border, over Gasbury, VA. This streak was detected between 12:51 to 12:56 pm."

The WYFF News 4 newsroom started getting calls about 12:30 about a "fiery ball" falling from the sky.
David Pepper provided video from White Horse Road that shows something falling from the sky at 12:21 p.m. Watch video below. You can see it about 10 seconds into the video.
We have seen reports of the sightings in Georgia and Tennessee.

Ohio Dem backs Trump after history of feuds with her party

Democratic Ohio state Rep. Bernadine Kennedy Kent on Tuesday endorsed President Trump over former Vice President Joe Biden.

The endorsement comes after a history of feuding with Ohio Democrats, according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

"Not only am I Black, I am a proud American and delighted to endorse President Trump for re-election," Kennedy Kent, who represents Ohio's 25th District, wrote in her endorsement posted to the president's 2020 campaign website. "Furthermore, I am honored to share with people my intent to vote for him and spread the word on the value of his leadership and his dedication to the American people."

She also said that despite her feelings toward the Democratic Party, her "values" align more with Trump's than with "Joe Biden's divisive rhetoric, promotion of mass incarceration, and disrespectful, insensitive ideologies that substantiates his infamous comment '…if you're still deciding between me and Trump, then you ain't Black…' during an interview on a popular African American radio program earlier this year."

Kennedy Kent said in a separate press release that her husband, also "a lifelong Democrat," is also supporting Trump's reelection.

She praised Trump's "willingness to listen to" Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., "and the concerns of invested citizens from diverse communities in economic distress.

Kennedy Kent served two years before being voted out of state's House Democratic Caucus in June 2018 after sending a letter on official Ohio Legislative Black Caucus letterhead without permission and has not returned to the Statehouse since May 2019, when she was blocked from entering a room, The Enquirer reported.

House Democrats also accused the state congresswoman of forging electronic signatures in June 2018, according to The Colombus Dispatch.

"She basically hasn't been involved with the party or her Statehouse job for a long time," Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper told the outlet. "This is the first I've heard of her in a while. Obviously, she checked out of her public position a long time ago."

Kennedy Kent, who is not seeking reelection in 2020, blamed House Democrats' "muddied mistreatment and unlawful action" as the reason why she left the party.

Sir Iain Robert Lobban, KCMG, CB (born 1960) is a former British civil servant. He was the Director of the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), the British signals intelligence agency, from 2008 to 2014.
Education and career

Born in Nigeria, Lobban graduated from the University of Leeds with a Bachelor of Arts in languages.[1][2] He joined GCHQ in 1983 and undertook a variety of roles before joining the GCHQ Board in 2001.[2] He was a participant of the Cabinet Office's Top Management Programme that year. He has also completed the Higher Command and Staff Course at the Ministry of Defence's staff college at Shrivenham.[3] Whilst on the Board he was responsible for moving the operations of GCHQ into its new base at The Doughnut at Benhall, Gloucestershire. Before being appointed Director, Lobban was Director-General (Operations); having taken up this post in early 2004. He became the Director of GCHQ in July 2008, succeeding Sir David Pepper.[2]

Lobban spoke of his regret over the treatment of cryptographer Alan Turing in October 2012.[4] Turing, who committed suicide after being convicted of homosexuality, was described by Lobban as a "national asset" and said that more people like Turing were needed to face contemporary information security threats.[4]

In November 2013 in the wake of the global surveillance disclosures by the former American National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden, Lobban and the other heads of the British intelligence agencies, Andrew Parker of MI5, and John Sawers of MI6 appeared before the Joint Intelligence Committee.[3] During his questioning by the committee Lobban said that "I do not look at the surrounding hay" referring to the metadata collected by GCHQ.[3] Lobban said that the disclosures had been discussed by terrorist groups in the Middle East and Afghanistan.[3] The effect of Snowden's revelations would make GCHQ's task "…far, far harder in the future".[3] Snowden's extensive disclosures revealed details of GCHQ's recent activities and capabilities, including the Tempora electronic surveillance program, GCHQ's tapping of international fiber-optic communications, and the NSA's payment to GCHQ over £100 Million between 2009 and 2012.[5]

It was announced in January 2014 that Lobban would stand down as GCHQ director before the end of the year.[1] Lobban's American equivalents, the head of the National Security Agency, General Keith B. Alexander, and his deputy, John C. Inglis, also stood down from their posts in 2014.[1] He formally retired on 24 October 2014.[6]

After retiring from the government, Lobban went on to advise the Australian government before joining the advisory board of private security firm the Holdingham Group, which is now known as Hakluyt & Company.[7]

Lobban was appointed Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the 2006 New Year Honours for services to national security[8] and Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in the 2013 New Year Honours for services to national security.[9]
